Book Description
A Practical Foundation in Accounting provides a lucid and comprehensive introduction to accounting for foundation level students. It combines easy-to-follow and modern presentation with detailed and practical coverage, supported by over two hundred carefully selected questions chosen to test students' progress and degree of comprehension. This fifth edition includes full answers to approximately half of the questions for the use of the students. Retaining its practical approach and `user-friendly' format, this edition has been fully revised and updated. The book begins with a clear and comprehensive stage-by-stage introduction to double entry book-keeping and accounting. Subsequent early chapters cover depreciation, books of original entry, bad debts, control accounts, bank reconciliation, etc., in a similarly thorough manner. More specialised applications and an introduction to cash flow and interpretative aspects of accounting are dealt with in later chapters. This comprehensive introduction is suitable for the wide range of introductory courses in accounting and business studies at Colleges of Further Education.

From the supplier: Congress divided groups organized under IRC 501(c)(3) into two classes in 1969, public charities and private foundations. Of the two, most organizations prefer to qualify as public charity because of the beneficial tax status they enjoy. IRC 170 establishes certain classes which automatically qualify for public charity status, and two tests for those not so specified. Contribution limitations, excise tax status and other qualifying factors are also presented.

Book Description
The terrain of management in Africa remains largely unexplored as researchers continue to set their sights on the West and the East. This volume addresses the apparent shortage of knowledge about the nature, diversity and context of HRM in Africa and highlights the important trends and patterns that have been emerging on the continent. It also examines how and how the extant HR practices and policies have been shaped by industrial, socio-cultural, legal-political and institutional factors. Featuring contributions from the experts, the book is organised by country and includes full chapters on countries across the length and breadth of Africa, from Tunisia and Libya in the north to South Africa and Botswana in the south; from Kenya and Tanzania in the east to Ivory Coast and Ghana in the west. This is the first book to tackle HRM across Africa on such a scale. A bold study of HRM in too often neglected areas, this is part of the Global HRM series.

Book Description
"All South Africans must now unite and join hands and say we are one country, one nation, one people, marching together into the future" Nelson Mandela
Human resource development is a high priority if South Africa is to improve teaching and education management to meet present and future needs. Many teachers have only limited training and most principals and senior staff have received no specific preparation for their management roles. This series, Managing Schools in South Africa, seeks to fill that gap. It aims to develop material directly relevant to school management. It integrates the best of theory, research and practice drawn from the most appropriate international sources which is directly applicable to a wide range of South African schools
This book is underpinned by the philosophy that effective management of all staff in schools is essential if the challenges of educating South Africa's youth are to be met. Good managers must be able to recruit, select, motivate and monitor teachers and other staff. The purpose of "Managing Human Resources in South Africa" is to provide guidelines for professional development and competence in managing staff effectively. Case examples are provided throughout.

Book Description
Since centuries foods have been preserved by heating, chilling, drying, salting, conserving, acidification, oxygen-removal, fermenting, adding various preservatives, etc., and often these methods were applied in combinations. More recently the underlying principles of these traditional methods have been defined (i.e., F, t, aw, pH, Eh, competitive flora, various preservatives), and effective limits of these factors for microbial growth, survival, and death were established. Food preservation and also food quality depends in most cases on the empirical and now more often on the deliberate and intelligent application of combined preservative factors, i.e. on so-called hurdle technology. It also became obvious that futuristic food preservation methods (e.g., high hydrostatic pressure, high-intensity pulsed electric fields, high-intensity pulsed light, oscillating magnetic fields as well as food irradiation) are most effective in combination with additional hurdles. Thus, hurdle technology is also the key of food preservation in the future. Furthermore, basic aspects of hurdle technology (i.e., homeostasis, metabolic exhaustion, and stress reactions of microorganisms as well as the multitarget preservation of foods) have been recognized to be of fundamental importance and are increasingly studied in relation to hurdle technology.
Different aspects of improvements of traditional foods and in the development of novel foods via hurdle technology have been covered recently in numerous articles and book chapters. However,
Hurdle Technologies: Combination Treatments for Food Stability, Safety and Quality is the first work on hurdle technology in which all aspects, the possibilities and limitations of hurdle technology, are comprehensively outlined and evaluated. World-renowned on the subject, Leistner and Gould were instrumental in the development of the hurdle technology concept and in the last decades have obtained much practical experience in the application of this successful approach in the food industry worldwide.

Customer Reviews:
Great Place to Start.......2007-08-31
I have had a GPS unit for almost a year now with no hope of understanding just what it can do or how to use it due to the arcane nature of the owner's manual.I have no clue as to why the manufacturer's write such poor manuals but they do. In response to my frustrations I decided to try Joel's book as a means of understanding what this small device could do and just how to get it to do what the promotional materials say it does. After reading most of Joel's book I was able to go to work using my GPS unit and understand how to negotiate its features with relative ease. Realistically it isn't perfect but it sure is a great place to start if you are like me, clueless as to how to interpret the gibberish in the owner's manual.
Interesting but..........2007-02-03
I bought this book because I had recently purchased a GPS and was frustrated by the techno speak in the manual. I was looking for something to help me through the jargon.
Only about 1/3 of the book is specificallly about your GPS. A small section is about cartography and the rest deals with "digital mapping" (more jargon for computer software dealing with maps). All of the information is at least loosely tied to a GPS. There is no glossary section but the author does embed many clarifications of technical terms that are helpful for dummies like me.
The GPS sections are an improvement over my manual but still only partially sucessful. Priorities in choosing and mastering a GPS are miniscule. The cartography portion has information that is both interesting and helpful and does not bog the reader down with irrelevant information. These two topics are discussed in the first seven chapters.
The book then turned to digital mapping and I almost gave up on the book. I had no interest in mapping and I wasn't totally satisfied with the previous sections. Luckily I continued on. The mapping chapters are almost exclusively about mapping software (and little utility programs that help). The software information includes commercial, shareware and freeware programs. It discusses programs for the beginner on up to some heady stuff. You may want to take up the subject as a hobby even if you never were interested before. If I had the time I would be tempted to just play with this stuff because it is so cool.
If you buy the book, I would first just skim this "software" portion of the book when you go through it the first time. I think there are 14 chapters. It is amazing what is available but also sometimes redundant. I would use it only as a reference and study only the sections you need at that moment. Reading it word by word might be wasteful.
I do wish that the author had separated the utility software into a separate chapter so that those jewels could be returned to easily. I found them very useful.
The book is a mixed bag. The software chapters are the best part. The GPS info is not going to thrill you. The reading is pretty easy for a technical book.
Good for entry into GPS use.......2007-01-16
Copywrite date was 2004. Seems a little outdated in some places. Other than that, it was very helpful and full of useful Websites.
GPS Book.......2006-03-16
I belive this book is just a little more them a book for dummies. I still don't think I picked the right book for me. I still feel like I am in the dark.
Great Book for beginners and advanced users.......2005-08-31
Tons of good information to get started with using a GPS, goes beyond the basics. Really a very good starter book. Once you get this book, I would also recomend "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Geocaching" and the Owing's "GPS Mapping". With GPS for Dummies and my Garmins 60CS manual, I was able to hit the trail in a few hours. With the other books as complement, I have become very accurate locating waypoints when I do horse riding or 4x4 trips.

Great fun.......2000-03-30
Get this if you already live in NYC or intend to visit, you will not be disappointed. I loved the detailed info on the architecture of the Woolworth building and the history behind the folks in buried in Trinity Cemetary. I enjoyed the facts of who used to live in what buildings in the Village. When covering the 5-Points Section, what is now the Federal &State Courts area & Chinatown, was absolutlely fun trying to hunt down these old sites still visible for myself. All the info on the history of some of the street names was curious such as Mott, Pell, Bayard & Baxter streets were named after the butchers in the area when that area was a stinking mess. The lore surrounding Wahington Square Park, especially the "Hanging Tree" was fascinating. I'm still trying to figure out which tree it is! All the semi-hidden small cemetaries mentioned in Manhattan is worth a look; knowing that these still exist especially when the real estate here is so astronimical in price. I hope people make good use of this guide when showing off the City to visitors & I'm sure tourists will get a kick out of an insiders tour of NYC.

Book Description
When last we saw them, the Shluffmuffin twins were running for their lives. In this, the second installment, they run right into the arms of their long-lost father. But he's not quite as they remember him . . . Of course, who would be after a tragic Porta Potti accident? Instead, he has become something frightening, something far too horrifying to explain.
No, no, we can't do it, you'll just have to buck up and read the book yourself. When things get creepy, you try to cover your eyes, but you peek through anyway, don't you? Well, then, you'll get what you deserve--a laugh attack you'll never recover from. Serves you right.

Jolly Good Fun.......2007-04-06
Having barely escaped from the Onts (really two giant ants who wanted to kill them), Wally and Cheyenne Shluffmuffin have no choice but to hitchhike their way back to Jolly Days Orphanage. After catching a ride with a truck driver who claims to keep a brain in his trunk, Wally and Cheyenne are happy to be back at Jolly Days but Hortense Jolly is less pleased to see them and rats them out to the Onts. Wally and Cheyenne are soon on the run again with the Onts hot on their trail. Wally and Cheyenne have to deal with getting lost in a swamp, quicksand, no food, police, and a giant spider. As if that wasn't enough, just why does that zombie look like their late father?
Taking place right after "The Onts", the first book in Dan Greenburg's Secrets of Dripping Fang series, ended, "Treachery and Betrayal at Jolly Days" is great fun. There's a nice sense of humor throughout the book which is full of odd ball characters like Verne the brain touting truck driver; Hortense Jolly; the Onts; the Zombie; a bus driver who insists on exact change because it's the law; the orphans of Jolly Days; and Edgar Spydelle who just happens to be married to a giant spider. There are also some laugh out loud gross moments, mostly dealing with the zombie. While this is a children's book and therefore most of the humor is aimed at children, there are also some especially funny moments that adults will love: the full page ad for the Jolly Days Orphanage that is in the yellow pages; policemen named Beckett and Kafka; and a small diner with an amazing menu that includes filet mignon and coq au vin. The illustrations by Scott Fischer are also very funny and readers should look closely at them for hidden jokes. At 124 pages, the book is just the right length for young readers.
"Treachery and Betrayal at Jolly Days" is jolly good fun.
Great Book.......2005-12-11
I would recomend this book to anybody who likes Dan Greenburg. I even e-mailed Scott M. Fischer (the illasrtator)! He is a great guy. He said he even liked these books so anybody who likes things that are a tiny bit scary in a funny way you should defenetly get this.

In this novel set in a poor Hispanic neighborhood in Dallas, Texas, two brothers fight to survive and improve their future. A blend of "mature themes and clear language with action-packed story about two Mexican boys who overcome severe difficulties... This book should find a wide audience, including reluctant readers." The Secret of the Two Brothers.......2001-11-20
The Secret of the Two Brothers
This story takes place in West Dallas. A 21-year-old named Beaver is serving time in jail for a crime that he didn't commit. While Beaver was in jail his mother died and he knew that he had to get out of there so that he could take care of his brother!
After serving three years he finally got out and went to start his life over with his little brother (Cande). About a month had past since Beaver got out of prison and Cande and him were at a dance with some of Beaver's old friends. Before the dance was over Cande told Beaver that he wanted to go home, so Beaver let him go with his friends Margie and Richard. Later, Beaver had found out that his friends Margie and Richard and his brother got seriously injured because they were in a...
I liked this book because it was very interesting. It always left me wanting to read more. This book showed prejudice and stereotype because people thought bad and untrue things about Beaver. They thought this because he was and ex-con. I haven't read and other books by this author, but I think that I might like to considering that I liked this book so much! For more information on this book I would recommend that you read it!
After serving time for a crime, Beaver seeks his brother........1998-06-23
Nineteen-year old Beaver Torres served time in prison for a crime he did not commit, but to save his brother, he elects to take the rap. After the hardships of prison, he is paroled and seaches for his artistically talented little brother in order to establish a life for them and provide a time for healing. He overcomes the death of his mother, his father's physical abuse toward Cande and his own fears. With the help of various neighbors and friends, as well as his female probation officer, he comes to understand the true meaning of love, honor and forgiveness. Set in the barrio/slums of West Dallas, this heart-wrencher will teach teens the importance of family, peersonal stamina and make them aware of what happens to teens who are in the wrong place at the wrong time. I used this book as a teaching tool for my sons and his friends. I will be more patient and listen more to the teens around me. Excellent reading for adults.
