Quicken 2000 for Macintosh: Visual QuickStart Guide does an excellent job of introducing the newcomer to computerized financial record-keeping for individuals. If you're thinking about making the leap from paper check registers and scattered credit card statements, this book can help you convert your records to digital form and develop a better picture of where you stand in terms of what you have, what you owe, and what you expect to happen in the future. This book is best for people who don't expect to strain Quicken's accounting capabilities. Its documentation of the program's mechanisms for tracking checking account transactions, loans, and credit card balances is very good, but investment coverage falls somewhat short of the mark. (There's nothing about recording the details of a stock split, for example.)
Still, the Visual QuickStart style works well as a tool for introducing novices to something potentially confusing with a minimum of pain. Small screen shots appear next to the column of text containing the steps to follow; you just need to glance back and forth to see how your computer's display should look as you progress. If you run Quicken 2000 on a Mac and want a gentle introduction to its essentials, this book has your number. --David Wall
Topics covered: Elementary and intermediate aspects of Quicken 2000 for the Macintosh, including accounts, categories, transactions, registers, and reports. There's also coverage of balancing an account, working with Quicken's Internet features, and managing loans and investments.

Nice little intro!.......2000-06-01
This was a great book to introduce me to really using Quicken. It walked me through it without dumbing it down or making me hunt for a dictionary.

Book Description
This is the first history of the Jewish agricultural colonies that were established in Crimea and Southern Ukraine in 1924 and that, fewer than 20 years later, ended in tragedy. Jonathan Dekel-Chen opens an extraordinary window on Soviet rural life during these turbulent years, and he documents the remarkable relations that developed among the American-Jewish sponsors of the ambitious project, the Soviet authorities, and the colonists themselves.
Drawing on extensive and largely untouched archives and a wealth of previously unpublished oral histories, the book revises what has been understood about these agricultural settlements. Dekel-Chen offers new conclusions about integration and separation among Soviet Jews, the contours of international relations, and the balance of political forces within the Jewish world during this volatile period.

Neural Networks: Algorithms and Applications.......2007-04-01
Sorry!
I never received my book. I'm waiting for the return of my money.
Dr. Fernando Pruneda
Disappointing, poorly written........2004-04-30
I am so sorry I bought this book.
The English is awful! Missing articles and prepositions are the rule, and it's full of cumbersome sentences.
Just to write this review, I opened the book randomly a few times:
"Those units calculating trajectories can be classified into four type; plan units, state units, ..." [p146]
"...neural networks can be used to determine the, similarity of training and testing signals, by comparing ... " [p181]
"The contents of the input are horizontal and vertical forces at the joints of the truss structure of external forces itself." [p159]
"Deeming objective function as giving the energy of r network ..." [p167]
"Above equation ensures that... " [p76]
"...training is given in Appendics." [preface]
With that said, 90% of the "C++ code" belongs to a quick tutorial on OOP, and the remaining 10% is of little help, if any.
Finally, most topics are covered in less than 5 pages, including pictures and samples.

Gene Cloning and DNA Analysis: An Introduction
ASIN: 052152105X |
Book Description
Now fully updated to reflect recent advances, this introduction provides a broad, but concise, coverage of recombinant DNA techniques. Emphasis is placed on the concepts underlying particular types of cloning vectors to aid understanding and to enable readers to devise suitable strategies for novel experimental situations. A series of 'real-life' biological problems are also presented to enable readers to assess their understanding of the material and to prepare for exams.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent overview of techniques in genetic engineering.......2001-04-02
This book is a "wet" approach to genetic engineering and outlines for the reader modern laboratory techniques in cloning and gene sequencing. It is well suited for a mathematician or an aspiring bioinformatics specialist who needs an overview of the experimental side of genetic engineering. The treatment is very detailed and a lot is covered given the size of the book, but it is well written and an interesting read. It does require a fair amount of background in biochemistry but even readers without such a background can follow the dialog if close attention is paid to the definitions. A little elementary physics background is required in the discussion on gel electrophoresis, and in the discussion on biolistic transformations with a particle gun. For the mathematician/bioinformaticist the most useful chapters will be the chapters on the making and screening libraries. The validation of gene sequence data is an important but tedious exercise and these chapters introduce the reader to what must lie ahead if such activities are pursued. Even if read leisurely the book is fascinating and one takes away a deeper appreciation of the tools and techniques used in this new century of biology.

Book Description
There's an incredible similarity between the mechanics of a fly cast and the swing of a golf club. Perhaps that's why Chris Santella, author of Fifty Places to Fly Fish Before You Die, can be found on the links when he's not on the stream. With Fifty Places to Play Golf Before You Die, Santella gives voice to his other sporting passion, interviewing 50 people intimately connected to the sport about some of their favorite courses around the world.
For both passionate golfers and armchair travelers, this gorgeous full-color book presents the world's greatest golf venues, the personal favorites of renowned players, course architects, and other experts in the sport. From Ballyliffin, Ireland's northernmost course, whose rumpled fairways wander along the North Sea in the shadows of Glashedy Rock, to New Zealand's Cape Kidnappers, perched atop dramatic cliffs some 500 feet above the ocean, the book's beautiful photographs capture the architecture, noteworthy holes, location, and ambiance that make these courses standouts for ardent golfers. A brief history of each course, an experiential account-filled with local color-from the person recommending the venue, and trip-planning advice provide adventurous readers with all the information they need to chip and putt their way around the globe.
A close-up look at golf's top courses around the world, recommended by such experts as Nick Faldo and Christie Kerr (pro golfers), Pete Dye and Tom Doak (course architects), Brian McCallen (editor and author), and Donald Trump
With breathtaking color photographs of each site, this is a great gift for avid golfers and armchair travelers alike

50 Places to Play Golf Before You Die.......2007-06-08
A lovely book. Not exceptional, but enjoyable. It was disappointing in two ways:
1. some of the authors (each chapter talks about a specific course or courses) of the chapters were the course designer of that specific course - clearly, a conflict of interest!
2. would have loved to have more courses that are out-of-the-way and/or extremely private - courses that we can only dream about playing!
A fabulous Find!.......2007-05-15
Top Notch Golf and World Travel...what more could a serious golfer want?
This book is a fabulous find and an inspired gift you will be proud to share with a golfer you love. Even as a non golfer, I enjoyed the travels insights and the background on how each course was created. It provided me a whole new appreciation for the game and the "art" of golf course creation.
Great Book!.......2007-01-15
Bought it for my Dad, an avid golfer and traveler. He loves it.
O.K. Little Book.......2006-05-17
Notice that the title is not "The Fifty Greatest Golf Courses." My title would be, "Fifty Interesting Places to Play Golf." Whether it's my title or the real title, the emphasis is on "places to play," or "destinations," not golf courses per se. More than fifty golf courses are covered. Which is not to say that the book does not include a lot of great golf courses. The format is mini-coffee table, with several pages of text for each destination and one small picture for most of the destinations. The quality of the printing, photo reproduction and binding in my copy is excellent. The text for each destination has been volunteered by a different prominent golf person. For example, Nick Faldo writes about the Royal Melborne Golf Club (West Course) in the Australian state of Victoria. Alice Dye about the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course (see a connection there?). On the plus side are the quality of the color photos and the introduction (to me) of golf courses in some far away places (e.g., Bhutan, Morocco, India, places, however, I'll never get to). On the minus side, I don't have a prayer of playing some of the U.S. courses, even after I die (e.g., Pine Valley, Sand Hills, National Golf Links of America), which, honestly, the author points out. Finally, why not at least one photo for each destination? From the two page description of the Pacific Grove muni: "[T]he back nine . . . takes you right out to the water and combines incredible views of the Pacific and Monterey Bay with windswept bluffs reminiscent of some of the great courses of Scotland and Ireland." Why no photo of this course? From the two page description of the Torekov Golf Club in Sweden (my ancestral home): ". . .a links-oriented course. . . You can view the sea from all eighteen holes. In the summer, wildflowers are blooming everywhere . . . ." I want a photo, darn it!
Beautiful Pictures, really nice gift........2006-02-03
Being a golfer, I got this as a gift from one of my relatives. I must say the pictures are outstanding. This book makes me want to travel more to other countries to experience the pleasure of these courses. This book will always have a permanent place in my library. For excellent golf instruction that helped me to drastically reduce my handicap, I recommend,
The Ultimate Golf Instruction Guide: Key Techniques for Becoming a Zero Handicap Golfer or Better, isbn 1933023090
and
for more great pictures of specific golf holes, I recommend,
Golf Digest 365 Golf Holes Calender 2006, isbn 0761137343.
This maintains a permanent place on my office desk.

Customer Reviews:
Don't go to SA without this book.......2001-06-11
We bought 5 books when we went to SA ,and the book that we kept referring to is this Baedeker's guide. The map that came with the book was especially useful, because it included routes that were not shown on the bigger SA road map we had brought with us. We would have been lost without this map on the Garden Route. This Baedeker's guide is separated into major sights by alphabetical order. Under each sight(name of which is printed on the upper right hand side of each page) are major landmarks or information about the sight so referencing is really quick and easy. These references helped us decide what to see once we arrived there.I also loved the Baedeker Special articles that are interapersed within the landmark section. These articles provide highly interesting history and information from the occupation of Capetown to sharks in South Africa. The size of the book is also an advantage, at 4"X 7", it would easily fit into a woman's handbag. If you want lots of big glossy exciting pictures of South Africa this is definitely not the book to get. The pictures contained in this book give you a taste of the country but do not do it justice. However, if you are going to travel to SA this is the book you must buy.

This was nice......there is a fifth one right?.......2004-07-05
Before I started reading this book I had the impression that It would sum up all of the incidents and all the drama leading up to it. But, I was greatly disappointed. When the book ended I was thinking, did the real ending of the book fall out? Then I turned to page and saw the epilogue, so I thought, "Okay this should sum things up for me." But, It didn't. All it did was to leave me hanging on a string, and wondering if I misread something about a fifth book. I suggest that you don't read it unless you have prepared yourself for dissatisfation. But really, Is a fifth book coming out? Cause if it is, I'll change my review around completely.
