          3 out of 5 stars Disease Profiles.......2001-01-03

The book, in handbook format, covers warm and cool season grass diseases, most of which have pictures. About the first ten pages are dedicated to sharing causes and diagnostic procedures. Another short section covers developing disease control strategies.

3 out of 5 stars The Turfgrass Disease Handbook.......2000-12-30

The book is a good material for learning about specific warm and cool season grass diseases, but it is more conducive to reference due to its handbook format. A limited ten page section covers causes and diagnostic procedures for diseases. A section on developing integrated disease control strategies is also included.

"Racism," Charles Barkley says, "is the biggest cancer of my lifetime. And I know I can't cure the cancer, but doesn't somebody have to attack it?" Barkley's means of attack in Who's Afraid of a Large Black Man?--not surprising from one of the most outspoken athletes of our time--is to break past the taboo of race by talking about it in the open. What might be surprising is that Barkley steps aside and lets other people talk, too. While in his previous bestseller, I May Be Wrong but I Doubt It, the former NBA MVP and current TNT commentator held forth on a wide variety of subjects, for his new book he sought out a baker's dozen of leading figures in entertainment, business, and government (and yes, one athlete) and sat down with each for a frank conversation about race.

Of course race is not a simple topic, and each discussion heads in its own direction. Tiger Woods speaks both of his biracial identity and of how moving it was to see the black staff at Augusta National lined up to see him put on the green jacket as Masters champion. George Lopez talks about the pressures of creating a breakthrough Latino sitcom in an almost all-white industry. Film producer Peter Guber surprises Barkley when he says that he made The Color Purple out of economic self-interest, not idealism. Many of the discussions turn, like Guber's, not to traditional civil rights but to economics, which Rabbi Steven Leder calls the real "last taboo subject in America." It's clear that the audience Barkley most hopes to reach with this book is the young black men and women that he and many of his interview subjects are concerned about. "We're losing," activist Marian Wright Edelman tells him, "and if we don't stop this trend, we're going to be headed back to slavery." Barkley's celebrity subjects can provide some models for success for those readers, but one also hopes Barkley can continue the conversation by turning the spotlight on those struggling with the problems of race outside the sometimes protective glare of fame. --Tom Nissley

Who's Afraid of Talking to a Large Black Man?

Throughout his career, Charles Barkley has always been willing--quite willing--to call it as he sees it, making him one of the most quotable athletes of his era and, many have suggested, a future political candidate. He's as happy talking issues as talking hoops, and for his new book, Who's Afraid of a Large Black Man? he sat down for conversations across the country about the troublesome topic of race in America. We had our own conversation on the subject with Sir Charles: Read it to find why he wrote the book, what he tells his own biracial daughter about race, and why he thinks sports can be a model for race relations.

                      Book Description

In this controversial national bestseller, Charles Barkley takes on the major issue of our time in a series of charged, in-your-face conversations with some of America's most prominent figures-featuring new commentary about New Orleans and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

                      Download Description

Who's afraid to talk on the record about the way things really are in this country where race is concerned? Not Charles Barkley, and now, thanks to him, not a host of other important people who carry a wealth of wisdom with them, from Bill Clinton and Barack Obama to Samuel L. Jackson, Tiger Woods and Ice Cube. This is the most personal and important book Charles Barkley has written. He lays himself open here, and because he does, he brings the same straight talk out of everyone with whom he engages in his journey around America to talk about the things that matter most that are the hardest to say - things having to do with race, and money, and identity. Why is it that we can all talk about all sorts of big issues, but when the subject of race is raised, we all freeze up? Who but Charles Barkley can put us into the passenger seat next to him for one of the most fantastic American road trips in recent memory? Who's Afraid of a Large Black Man is so surprising, challenging, and entertaining, so compelling to read, that its importance sneaks up on you and knocks you clean into another state of mind. Bold, honest, funny, moving, occasionally shocking-everything we feel we can't say but it really is time we did. Only Charles Barkley could make this conversation happen, and for that alone he is a national treasure.

Although I'm not a huge basketball fan, I know who Charles Barkley is and was curious to see what type of book he would write. Consequently I was overjoyed while reading the introduction it grabbed me from the start. It's an easy read and the writers puts you at ease by making you feel as if you're listening in on a conversation with friends. I am throughly enjoying being enlightened, informed and educated all at the same time. I only wish I had know about the book when it first came out. Excellent read, I have bought numerous copies as gifts for the young men in my life.

                      2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-01-12

For some strange reason I am a Charles Barkley fan, that is why I recieved the book. I was disappointed, it wasn't what I expected at all! Know what you are buying before ordering this book.

4 out of 5 stars Sir Charles Shoots and Scores!.......2006-08-10

I read this book over a year ago, and continue to recommend it to friends (people of color and non-people of color alike). It is among the best books that I read last year (certainly the easiest read about issues of race/ethnicity). It exceeded my expectations: I could hardly put it down! While some chapters are somewhat informal, that is part of its charm. It reads as though Charles is sitting in the living room telling the story. I appreciate the diversity of celebrities that he assembled for this book. While it may remind some of "People Magazine", there lies its strength. Sir Charles' book will touch every person who is affected by race issues in America, be they an educator, a rabbi, or President of the United States, if they make themselves available. I recommend it highly!

                      5 out of 5 stars Required Reading.......2006-06-03

This book should be required reading for every African American family in this country and particularly our schools. It speaks candidly about the things WE need to do to pull ourselves out of the downward spiral we find ourselves in. Anyone who does not like this book is because it gives us accountabiity for improving our position. It clearly spells out that this is about economic diversion and that is from where all power and financial wealth is derived. And, it shows that even the likes of Tiger Woods suffered rascism; perservered and over came. I am buying multiple copies to give to my adult sons and to other friends and family.

5 out of 5 stars Sir Charles on point!.......2006-05-23

As a non-sports fan, books by athletes tend to bore me silly aside from ones with strong historical value. A co-worker recommended this to me and I could not put it down.

Sir Charles basically talks to a number of famous and not-so famous people about race relations. These admittedly free-flowing conversations are quite revelaing and since most of them speak from personal experiences and not polemics so common in books of this kind, it makes a better read. Tiger Woods' recollections of hardcore racism debunks his spoiled-kid image and George Loez' struggle against anti-Latino stereotyping confims what I have always felt of the similarity of the struggles of so-called "minority" groups.

Interestingly , Bill Cosby's controversial recent comments on the state of Black America are mentioned frequently throughout the interviews. It would have helped if the Cos was actually interviewed (perhaps he's planning his own book, as was the case with Justice Clarence Thomas whose current book prevented his interview from being quoted here-that would have also been interesting).

But just when you think that few people would have anything new to add to the subject beyond rhetoric-read this-you'll be glad you did.

                        Product Description

The thing about race, Charles Barkley says, is we talk about it only when something bad happens and tempers are high, and so all we do is shout at one another across a chasm that's wide and getting wider. The rest of the time we try to pretend that the chasm isn't there. The way to get real about things, Barkley demonstrates in this book, isn't to shout and point fingers, but to expose all the hypocrisy and phoniness that keep us from talking about the way things really are, and even to find the humor in all the crazy disconnects and misunderstandings between the different races in America. It's time someone did, because things aren't getting better, as he's here to show us. Racism has just gone underground: Sure, celebrities like him get the white-glove treatment, but in the meantime, we're living in a country that's growing steadily more racially segregated. If you're white, what are the odds you live or work with a significant number of black people? The odds are low and getting lower. When news of the Kobe Bryant case broke, 70 percent of whites polled thought he did it; 70 percent of blacks polled thought he was innocent. What's that about?, Charles Barkley wants to know. Until we learn to see into one another's minds and hearts a little more and, crucially, to laugh with one another, we're just going to keep living the lie that racism has gone away just because it's out of plain sight.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.......2005-08-29

The Ramsay Scallop was a good book. At first, I was reluctant to read it but once I got started, I finished it in about a week.. yes it was that good.
The parts about religion were boring but the stories some of the characters told were entertaining and lesson-learning.
It's amazing what some people would do to release sins from their souls!
I really did like the book and the selective boring parts were made up for with the rest of the story.
A must read for social studies fanatics!!

This would be a great book for learning about Catholic life and pilgrimages during that time period if it wasn't so PC. About 70% of the book is accurate, 25% is fluff and 5% contains the usual inaccuracies and misconceptions about the Catholic Church. There are about 20 or 30 sentences that do one of the following
                                -poke Christian beliefs
                                -misconceptions about the Catholic Church
-portray Moslims as more enlightened and more intellegent
-references to s-e-x (about 3 sentences)
                                -other politically correct views
This book does not twist historical people to act like modern people as does Catherine Called Birdie, for example, but there are enough problems that I won't be having my younger set read it (and the older teens aren't interested.) To bad she didn't do just a bit more research.

                                3 out of 5 stars Ramsay Scallop.......2005-02-07

I liked this book, but in my opinion it ends too early. The numerous stories that were told by the characters were unnecessary and dragged on. On a better note, I found many parts realistic, enchanting and sweet. A very interesting book like none I've read before.

5 out of 5 stars Why I liked it and many didn't.......2004-04-27

Well, after reading all of the other reviews offered at the bottom of this page, I was suddenly motivated to write a review of my own. I loved this book and was a bit confused at first about why others hated it.I think that the readers who reviewed this book and thought it was bad were not prepared for all of the information or didn't expect it to be how it was. Obviously there has to be something about this book or else it wouldn't've won the ALA Best Book for Young Adults award. I thought it was very interesting to learn about this time period and all this religious stuff got kind of boring but then you sort of got intrigued. The best part of the book was the blooming romance between the main characters Thomas and Elenor. I loved how at first Thomas referred to Elenor as "the Brat" and then eventually switched to Nora. I'm only a teenager and know as much about pilgrimmage as I do about gnu herding in West Africa (if there is such a thing). I found myself engrossed, though, and all in all it was a really good book I think.

                                1 out of 5 stars Boring book..........2004-01-14

This book is literally one of the worst I've ever read. Seriously, there is nothing you can get out of it. I don't understand how people can possibly enjoy this book-- I mean, the storyline isn't that bad, but it's just so slow-moving. Plus the main character, Elenor can be so stupid at times it just makes me want to stop reading. (Unfortunately I can't, as it's a school book). If you don't like historical fiction featuring mindless characters, DONT read this book.
