Soft Skills for Hard Jobs.......2007-10-03
Emotional Intelligence---the ability to not only read and understand emotions but also to use them in decision-making---is much-needed in the world of project management, but Anthony Mersino's book Emotional Intelligence for Project Managers falls short of delivering what his audience of project managers (PMs) really needs.
Most PMs see the world in business terms. They're often short on the people skills experience, and not psychologically inclined. They look somewhat askance at the "soft" side of people management. In high tech and engineering environments (where many projects run amok and where this material is very much needed!), project leadership operates in "hard" territory, with a growing sense, perhaps, that "soft skills" are needed. "If only I had the time to take my eye off the ball, then maybe I'd work on the people side."
But project realities are integrating products, managing vendors, reporting status, breaking new ground, managing big budgets, meeting deadlines. By framing his book in EI terms---encouraging readers to consider self management, social awareness and relationship management---Mr. Mersino has left his audience with the challenge they already had: to link all that "touchy-feely stuff" to their lives in the trenches.
I appreciate how much work it takes to write a book and take it all the way to a finished product. Kudos to Mr. Mersino for the undertaking and the completion. It's a tough topic, and a worthy one.
It's obvious Mr. Merino has developed a deep and professionally useful understanding of EI. I bet he's an extraordinary project manager. I just don't think this book goes far enough to bring his understanding of how Project Managers should apply EI on the job as effectively as I wish it did.
Your secret to success in IT leadership.......2007-09-11
Emotional intelligence is a key and often missing ingredient for successful leadership. Mastering this skill requires tools and techniques which are not available in standard IT curriculum. This book provides you with those quick and easy to remember aids that will help you recognize and leverage your own emotions and those around you for mutual benefit. With a few practice exercises under your belt, you will see improvements in daily interactions and soon get through difficult situations with ease. As a trusted reference it will set you on the path to realize productive working relationships which are essential to IT Leadership.
Finally a practical guide on applying EI for Project Managers.......2007-08-14
I was very impressed by Mersino's grasp of EI and how he has taken the concepts and theories behind it to create some very practical tools and techniques to use in successfully managing and leading project teams. He reveals stories about his personal and professional experience that makes it real. I wish I had the advantage of this valuable information when starting out in my professional career as a project manager. As Mersino constantly reinforces, it is never too late to assess and change our behaviors if we are motivated to do so.
Customer Reviews:
Patricia Franks.......2007-09-26
This book is a consolidation of many of the concepts on dealing with people issues that I had already been exposed to during my career (i.e. Myers-Briggs, "groupthink") as well as new people management concepts and skills that I had not been exposed to (i.e. "career anchors" , advice on how to handle situations like traumatic events that impact team members). It uses vignettes to illustrate how these skills and concepts can be applied in real work situations. What I found especially interesting was the section that was outside the realm of text book theory presentation where, I assume, Ginger Levin documented her journey through the world of project management. It was a valuable "lessons learned" review of her experiences and illustrates that honing your people management skills is always going to be a continuous process.
Those individual who are at the early stages of their project management careers will find the section "Career Management for the Project Manager: The Project That Never Ends!" particularly useful because it highlights people skill issues that you must consider in order to advance in your career. A section that is useful to all project managers, no matter what stage in their career they are, is "Chapter 7 Project Manager: Know Thyself, Heal Thyself", because being a project manager is always going to come with some level of stress that you need to learn to deal with.
"People Skills for Project Managers" is a valuable addition to your project management reference library. I am sure I will refer back to it in the future.
An Insightful Must-Read for Project Managers.......2002-01-12
The authors of "People Skills for Project Managers" have combined their formidable talents (he is a management-consultant psychologist; she is a project manager tuned consultant with extensive experience in "people issues") to produce this highly-readable book. It is easy to understand and follow, yet thorough and well-researched.
People skills are the KEY to project manager success. By developing these skills, and learning to effectively apply them, a PM can avoid pitfalls that arise in working with people and their accompanying problems. There are numerous vignettes based on real-life situations and dilemmas and useful tips on how one might resolve the problems.
"People Skills for Project Managers" is a goldmine of information. A valuable resource for any PM. My highest recommendation.

Book Description
"I've seen the Sudan, traveled in South and Central America and been all over Europe, but I've never seen what I've been able to see on this tour [of the Loess Plateau, China]." -Ed Skidmore, soil scientist, Wind Erosion Research Unit of the Agricultural Research Service, USDA, Manhattan, Kansas Overpopulation is at the core of most environmental problems. The impacts of continued growth-with world population reaching 6 billion in October 1999-are felt in most parts of the world. China, the most populous nation, illustrates many of the pivotal problems-and solutions. Although China faces the same effects of overpopulation as the rest of the world, it still feeds over a billion people on a tillable area that allows about one tenth of a hectare per person. The country's efforts to tie together soil and water conservation, dryland farming, and economic development have been largely successful. Soil Erosion and Dryland Farming explores these trials and the lessons learned from them. Copublished with the Soil and Water Conservation Society, this exhaustive text consists of the rewritten proceedings from the Society's conference held in Yangling, Shaanxi, China. It covers dryland farming systems and soil water management, environmental quality and sustainability, and erosion control techniques as they relate primarily to Mainland China. With additional global examples and a balance between conceptual and applied studies, it covers some of the most progressive work in soil erosion control and dryland farming from around the world. Soil exposure while land lies fallow is one of the greatest risks in dryland farming. New procedures and kinds of tillage help control erosion and improve water intake. Soil Erosion and Dryland Farming presents these techniques and technologies to give you a forward-looking perspective into the field, as well as the larger problem of tailoring food production to sustain the population.

guidebook SUPREME !.......2001-11-12
I was planning a cruise to Alaska. I chose "Fodor's 2001 Alaska" as a guidebook and was so impressed, I purchased two more of them for my cruise travelmates. This book went with me wherever I traveled in the "land of the midnight sun". Not only did Fodor's guidebook describe the cruise ships to the inth, but all of the activities, etc. Every bit of the text was accurate to my experiences. This was my first cruise, and my first trip to Alaska. I found this book to be indispensible! The data on Alaska, the facts, the figures, the special places to see, things to do, walks, hikes, eats, animals, and people...all here in crisp detail for you to enjoy. Upon my return to the "lower 48", I even narrated my Alaska photo albums with information I retrieved from this book. History, indiginous peoples, it's all here. Do get this book if you are thinking of going to Alaska, or returning to Alaska. All text is up to date, with maps, etc. Excellent resource! From the Inside Passage to Denali National Park I traveled, and I learned much more about this great land we call Alaska because of Fodor's book. I am now planning on going back to this beautiful place in great part due to reading this guidebook.
Exploring Alaska on a budget, get this book........2001-09-13
This book contains a great list of places to stay and eat with prices. Some of my favorite sections of book include the following: Listing of Best Unspoiled Small Towns, which include Kodiak, Petersburg, and Cordova; Listing of Strange Comunity Events which include Cordova's Ice Worm Festival, Fairbanks' Midnight Sun Baseball Game nad Nomes Polar Bear Swim/Bathtub Race. If you are going to Alaska's number 1 destination, Denali National Park, make sure you pick up a copy of Discovering Denali.

Book Description
Laurel Becker is on the verge of losing the two most important things in her life--her current lover, Elaine Alexander, and the Lavender Page bookstore.
After intercepting a message from a co-worker, Laurel jumps to the conclusion that Elaine is having an affair and heads to the local bar to hide behind a beer.
In her search for Laurel, Elaine passes by the bar and sees her car and soon finds out that Laurel left with a woman. Assuming the worse, Elaine goes home and packs her suitcase and goes to a hotel.
Will Elaine and Laurel manage to work through their misunderstandings and rebuild their life together?
Customer Reviews:
Communication is Key.......2007-06-28
Two women, loving partners who have entwined their lives, can lose everything if they don't communicate. That's what happens to Laurel Becker and Elaine Alexander after a series of miscommunications and erroneous assumptions drive them apart.
Laurel is driving herself crazy trying to keep her late lover Chris' bookstore from bankruptcy. She spends every free moment either at the store or working for the store. Her current partner, Elaine, is at her wit's end. She wants to help ease Laurel's burden, but Laurel is too proud to accept that help. Leaning on the shoulders of their friends and coworkers, both women spend all their time either worried about or angry with the other. The final straw is when they begin to suspect each other of cheating.
Laurel kicks Elaine out, closes the store, and goes somewhere to think. In the meantime, Elaine is worried sick about Laurel and searches frantically for her. When they reunite, things are chilly between them. Will true love and patience prevail over the memory of a dead woman?
This is a good story and is certainly not "formula." It's the story of two women who haven't been unfaithful, but appear to have been because of a communication gap. If only they had talked rationally... However, we all have "if onlys" in our lives.

Customer Reviews:
Liz made her decision.......1998-10-12
I thought that it was really sad that Liz didn't take Todd back and I'm glad that Devon, finally, saw how much Liz loves Todd but why did Liz choose to be alone than to keep Todd I mean Todd is so sweet ok so I admit it that sending flowers, candy and cards is like buying back the relationship but it is also thoughtful and nice so why did Liz choose what she did I mean everyone knows that Liz can't live without Todd and be alone so in SVU she is but they are still friends in it and it was Todd who said that he didn't think that he could be anyone's boyfriend in SVU but this is different Todd can't do what he wants right like play basketball but hey no one said love and relationship is easy.not to mention life it self.
An enjoyable book to read........1998-10-01
I enjoed reading this book because it shows how a girl caught between two guys she cares about feels. It also makes you realize how the guys feel in this situation. although some of the things that happen to the characters is pretty incredible, it just adds to the excitement.
Almost excellent.......1998-04-20
This book was great, but I was kind of disapointed with Liz's decision about Todd and Devon. Jessica ruined her relationship with Devon, and I don't think Elizabeth should end everything because of her cheating twin.
This is a good book.......1998-04-15
This book tells what finally happens between Elizabeth, Devon, and Todd, and who she picks, if she picks anyone.

Please Forgive Me!.......2002-10-01
This was a story where the issue of domestic violence could have been tackled from the viewpoint of the silent victims, children. LaVonne made a decision one faithful night that changed not only her life but also the lives of her family forever. LaVonne was a victim of domestic violence and her children witnessed the abuse. The story goes on to try to explore the effects of the abuse and LaVonne's actions on her family. Due to her actions, LaVonne was sentenced to prison. The attorney referred by LaVonne's mother comes in to save LaVonne from a life behind bars.
When I received this book, I really looked forward to reading a novel that tackles such a difficult subject such as domestic violence and really discuss its affects on the children. The cover is striking and the author's background was impressive. So it was a real disappointment to read this book. It reads like a screenplay. The author changes verb tenses and there are so many grammatical errors it is difficult for the reader to stay focus on the actual story. The characters are not well developed. There are errors in timeline sequences and the ending is absolutely ridiculous.
I tried very hard to give this book a fair chance. When I read the celebrity endorsements on the back cover, not only was I impressed but also I was appalled to notice a misspelled name. However, I tried to overlook that minor problem because I knew she was self-published and I try to give those who self-publish the benefit of the doubt. Within 5 pages of the novel, I lost count of the misspellings and grammatical mistakes. I have had the book for months and I began reading it within a day of receiving it, however, I just finished the last 10 pages. Why? Because I found the story lacking in content, structure and strength.
This would have been a very good story if it had been developed properly. The author has a good premise and the story has potential, because domestic violence is a very serious subject.
Toi Moore took a difficult subject and tried to compress it into 177 pages. With some help from an editor, the actual story could be expanded to well over 200 pages. Toi Moore's motive is sincere, but her novel is lacking in many aspects.
Momma,Please forgive me.......2002-03-27
I felt the book was good, The subject of domestic abuse is much needed, All too many women and children go through this today. It was touching but the characters were lacking.I do salute her for doing this, and for leaving all the information for families to get help in the back of the book. Toi is an author who cares about today's issues and i hope she continues in this line of writing.
Touching...........2002-03-22
Momma, Please forgive me is about LaVonne Brown, a wife and mother who shoots and kills her husband after years of being abused by him. The story starts out with her being beaten by her husband and then she shoots him and is taken to jail. The following chapters go one to discuss her trials and tribulations while in jail and trying to get out to finally be with her children. This story was very touching because there are so many women out here today being abused by their significant others.
Through the Grace of God.......2002-03-09
LaVonne Brown is the mother of two who was beaten during her marriage and terminates the beatings and the marriage by killing her husband. This is a novel about the after affects of that decision during her ten-year incarceration.
Momma, Please Forgive is a self-published novel that holds great promise. The novel is peppered with messages of learning to forgive, understanding and redemption. Also, there is investigative work at play that is somewhat interesting. The voice of LaVonne's mother, Gloria, is endearing and strong.
The story falls short for several reasons............some of the characters are not developed, there are numerous grammatical errors and the structuring of the novel is poor. Several paragraphs and sentences begin with "Then Gloria took the letter".........."Then Gloria kissed the letter"........... "Then he ran to the bedroom." At times the novels reads like a play. For example, several chapters open with phrases such as, "It's early morning and the sun has risen"......... "The next morning has finally come"......... "LaVonne is now entering the courtroom of appeals"....... "It's the next morning". There is so much potential with the story line and the novel as a whole, however it was not captured. Loved the cover art!

This book leaves much to be desired.......2002-03-08
As much as I wanted to like this book (received it as a free, promotional offer from the author herself), I can honestly say that I found little, if anything, positive about it. From page one, I was disappointed with the preponderance of typos (I'm confident in saying that I found AT LEAST one typo on every single page), the grammatical errors that are too numerous to mention, the lack of believability of the storyline and the dialogue, the seemingly lack of fact-checking on the author's part, and the inconsistencies in logic (e.g., on one page, we're told that the son is a certain age. A few pages later he has aged by two years--despite the fact that only days have passed--and later we're given the first age).
This book could've been important, especially given the subject matter (domestic abuse), but I honestly could not take it seriously (For those of you that are interested in a book that tackles this issue--along with alcoholism--seriously, consider Bernice McFadden's "The Warmest December"). With, "Mama, Please Forgive Me", I found myself becoming more and more disappointed the further along I read, but I persisted because of the author's generosity in allowing me to review the book for free.
In the future, I would suggest that this author employ an editor who has some background in editing books, considering that both mundane and important details were clearly overlooked in this book.

Too much cannot be said.......2006-10-01
. . . about these beautiful kids. As in "Are You Out There, God?" Sister Mary Rose McGeady has painted a picture of courage in the face of tragedy, right here in the U.S. of A. While most of us are going about normal, happy lives (or worrying about things that aren't really important) homeless kids are wondering where they will sleep tonight, or where their next meal is going to come from, and all the while they are taken advantage of by the Big Dogs of the sex and drugs industry . . . just a few blocks away from Covenant House, where good people are doing everything they can to help! A book about learning to forget and let go . . . and who is REALY in need of forgiveness.
Lets you into the New York Streets........2006-08-30
All of Sister Mary Rose Mcgeady's books touch your heart for all the children who live on the New York streets. The Covenant House in New York is a special haven for the kids who have no hope.God bless all the people who give them love, hope,a future and tell them "you're so special." My prayers are with them all. I would reccomend this book for ages 11 and over.
