Employee-Centered Management: A Strategy for High Commitment and Involvement
Frederick E. Schuster Manufacturer: Quorum Paperback ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1567205992 |
Book Description
As evidence builds that the Theory Y model of management, built on commitment and involvement, is far more successful in the workplace than the bureaucratic and authoritarian Theory X model, organizations seek new and more specific guidance in how to reinvent themselves into the Theory Y mode. Schuster outlines a step-by-step process to transform management theory into practice--he calls it Strategy A. As proof that the process works, he describes one firm's five-year-long intervention, in which Strategy A was applied with dramatic success. Other examples of Strategy A's successes are recounted here: how it worked in companies like Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Disney, and elsewhere. Executives in the private and public sectors will find this a necessary resource to help them guide their organizations into this newly appreciated management style, while their academic colleagues will find new ways to communicate to their students its impressive benefits. Part I delineates the foundation and definition of Strategy A. Chapter 1 describes organization culture and why it is an important determinant in organization performance. Schuster then explains the urgency of devising methods for improving productivity and competitiveness, summarizes results from his study of Fortune 1300 largest companies, and introduces Strategy A as an intervention process. Reviewing the work of other researchers, Schuster examines several successful contemporary American firms utilizing Strategy A, and then presents the results of his own research of one particular firm's performance. In Part II Schuster examines the principal steps in the application of Strategy A, discusses their rationale, and shows how other American firms have benefited from them.

Irrigated Eden: The Making of an Agricultural Landscape in the American West (Weyerhaeuser Environmental Book.)
Mark Fiege Manufacturer: University of Washington Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0295980133 |
Book Description
Irrigation came to the arid West in a wave of optimism about the power of water to make the desert bloom. Mark Fiege's fascinating and innovative study of irrigation in southern Idaho's Snake River valley describes a complex interplay of human and natural systems. Using vast quantities of labor, irrigators built dams, excavated canals, laid out farms, and brought millions of acres into cultivation. But at each step, nature rebounded and compromised the intended agricultural order. The result was a new and richly textured landscape made of layer upon layer of technology and intractable natural forces-one that engineers and farmers did not control with the precision they had anticipated. Irrigated Eden vividly portrays how human actions inadvertently helped to create a strange and sometimes baffling ecology.

Great reading for genisis of Idaho Snake River Water Use!.......1999-09-27
In summary water along the Snake River in Idaho is unpredictable, not quantifiable, fickle and limited. Even in the 1920s when there were no uses competing with ariculture it had to be rationed. The surface water, ground water and aquifer commingle freely and as such should be jointly monitored and managed with "honest" diligence. When it comes to the water there is no such thing as partitioned individual water rights anywhere along the Sanke River in Idaho because we are all inextricably woven together in one tub and an action by one entity will affect everyone else in the tub. What one man passes another man drinks.Mark Fiege has done an excellent job of quantifying both the temporal and philosophical circumstances surrounding the acquisition and use of water for agriculture along the Snake River in Idaho up until about 1920. This book is a great place for one to begin to understand the genesis of water acquisition and husbandry for agriculture in Sountern Idaho. The first two thirds of the book and the notes are the best features of the book. The last third tends to drift away into a philosophical stretch without any real conclusions. Mark should now write a book that brings the use of water along the Sanke River in Southern Idaho up to the present time and weave together all of the contemporary competing uses for that water. Based on his research Mark should take the next step and make some recommendations for the future husbandry of our water. Mark has only done the first half of the job because the story is exponentially dynamic and just beginning. Finnish the story.

Wonderful Book!.......2002-08-17
Cute stories but nothing more.......2001-07-10
My biggest complaint is that this is a book, like most that I've read, of interesting stories but very, very, little on how to actually do this yourself. I buy these books so that I can learn how to do this... yet of the 207 pages in this book, 10 are devoted to teaching us how to do this ourselves! Too little for my taste plus those 10 don't give any real concrete instructions.
But there were other things about this book that stuck in my throat. Fitzpatrick opens the book by telling us how, when she was a kid, animals would tell her the towns gossip (who was having an affair, who was beating his wife, etc.)which they knew by simply eavesdropping on us. Then, further along in the book, she tells us that if we go on vacation without telling our pets first, they won't understand where we are and get scared. Huh? Which is it? do they understand our thoughts and words when it comes to planning an affair but not for planning a vacation?
If that is not enough to make you save your money then there's this...the Discovery Channel did a show on Animal Telepathy. One segment was about this woman. A veterinarian gave her six photo's of six animals from the clinic whose ailments had been already been diagnosed. She was to communicate with them and find out what was wrong with them. She blew it. She missed six out of six, not even close.
If you want a book that tells you, in explicit detail, how to do this, with exercises and background material that explains why, then I'd get "Straight From the Horses Mouth" by Amelia Kinkade. Of the ten or so books on the subject that I've read, this is the only one that really and truly tells you the how's and why's of it.

Dangerous Wishes.......2002-11-19
The worst part of the book was when the khwan, a spirit of a body who is still alive, came out of Gope's body and went after Dom. The khwan of Gope was angry at Dom because Dom knew a secret that no one
was supposed to know.
The most vivid were Dom And lek because the author,William Sleator, told their personalities and discriptions as if he knew them personally. The most vivid conflict was when Dom offended Lek about his culture by accident.
