      Book Description

As evidence builds that the Theory Y model of management, built on commitment and involvement, is far more successful in the workplace than the bureaucratic and authoritarian Theory X model, organizations seek new and more specific guidance in how to reinvent themselves into the Theory Y mode. Schuster outlines a step-by-step process to transform management theory into practice--he calls it Strategy A. As proof that the process works, he describes one firm's five-year-long intervention, in which Strategy A was applied with dramatic success. Other examples of Strategy A's successes are recounted here: how it worked in companies like Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Disney, and elsewhere. Executives in the private and public sectors will find this a necessary resource to help them guide their organizations into this newly appreciated management style, while their academic colleagues will find new ways to communicate to their students its impressive benefits. Part I delineates the foundation and definition of Strategy A. Chapter 1 describes organization culture and why it is an important determinant in organization performance. Schuster then explains the urgency of devising methods for improving productivity and competitiveness, summarizes results from his study of Fortune 1300 largest companies, and introduces Strategy A as an intervention process. Reviewing the work of other researchers, Schuster examines several successful contemporary American firms utilizing Strategy A, and then presents the results of his own research of one particular firm's performance. In Part II Schuster examines the principal steps in the application of Strategy A, discusses their rationale, and shows how other American firms have benefited from them.

      Book Description

Irrigation came to the arid West in a wave of optimism about the power of water to make the desert bloom. Mark Fiege's fascinating and innovative study of irrigation in southern Idaho's Snake River valley describes a complex interplay of human and natural systems. Using vast quantities of labor, irrigators built dams, excavated canals, laid out farms, and brought millions of acres into cultivation. But at each step, nature rebounded and compromised the intended agricultural order. The result was a new and richly textured landscape made of layer upon layer of technology and intractable natural forces-one that engineers and farmers did not control with the precision they had anticipated. Irrigated Eden vividly portrays how human actions inadvertently helped to create a strange and sometimes baffling ecology.

4 out of 5 stars A Balanced Account on the Controversial Subject of desert Irrigation.......2006-01-31

People interested in the history of western agriculture should read this. I found it very interesting to compare the Southern Idaho irrigation projects he describes with what was happening along the mid-Columbia with private small irrigation projects during that period, through my own family, described in "Orchards of Eden" White Bluffs on the Columbia, 1907-1943" Also good to compare with the Autobiography of a woman who actually lived that life of irrigated wheat farming in Idaho during that period, "Sagebrush People" probably out of print now, too bad. Dr. Donald Worster's book "Rivers of Empire" is highly critical of what was done to the natural world in the effort to green the desert, and I tend to sympathize with what he says, while Fiege takes the postion that irrigation has learned to live in harmony with nature. But what happened to those small farmers in the meantime? The good life got swept away in corporate farming I am afraid.

4 out of 5 stars Great reading for genisis of Idaho Snake River Water Use!.......1999-09-27

      Irrigated Eden

In summary water along the Snake River in Idaho is unpredictable, not quantifiable, fickle and limited. Even in the 1920s when there were no uses competing with ariculture it had to be rationed. The surface water, ground water and aquifer commingle freely and as such should be jointly monitored and managed with "honest" diligence. When it comes to the water there is no such thing as partitioned individual water rights anywhere along the Sanke River in Idaho because we are all inextricably woven together in one tub and an action by one entity will affect everyone else in the tub. What one man passes another man drinks.Mark Fiege has done an excellent job of quantifying both the temporal and philosophical circumstances surrounding the acquisition and use of water for agriculture along the Snake River in Idaho up until about 1920. This book is a great place for one to begin to understand the genesis of water acquisition and husbandry for agriculture in Sountern Idaho. The first two thirds of the book and the notes are the best features of the book. The last third tends to drift away into a philosophical stretch without any real conclusions. Mark should now write a book that brings the use of water along the Sanke River in Southern Idaho up to the present time and weave together all of the contemporary competing uses for that water. Based on his research Mark should take the next step and make some recommendations for the future husbandry of our water. Mark has only done the first half of the job because the story is exponentially dynamic and just beginning. Finnish the story.

          5 out of 5 stars Pet Lover.......2003-03-04

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Although I've been around pets all my life, I didn't understand that they can read your thoughts. I now realize that this is crucial to communicating with your pet. You can talk to them with your voice, but they get the non-verbal stuff too (unlike most humans). I used Sonya's instructions for communicating with your pet and was able to successfully "talk" to my cat. He showed me that he understood exactly the thought that I sent to him. I'm still struggling with 'hearing'/understanding my cat -- sometimes I get it and sometimes I don't. Sonya's right - you have to be completely relaxed and patient. Sometimes I'm just too busy. But I'm continuing to practice.

          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!.......2002-08-17

Sonya's book is great! It has helped me understand the animal world much better. Thanks to her book I am now able to better understand my cats and the animals around me. I help my family and friends with their animal problems now. I am very thankful to Sonya for helping me to better understand the world from an animal's point-of-view. I have no doubt that people can communicate with animals telepathically. If you are truly open to the idea, want to communicate with your pets, and have a true love for animals, then you can develop your ability to communicate with animals. Sonya tells in her book about the many animals she has encountered over the years; by telling people of these stories she has opened up the reader to what animals are like and how they perceive us. This book is truly a must for pet owners in order to better understand their animal companions. She tells ways to effectively get through problems that a person might be having with his/her pet and then gives helpful tips to help remedy the situation. The stories she tells apply to every pet owner. In the book, she has covered almost every animal you could possibly have. I recommend this book to anyone who has pets or works with animals. I give it five stars! Sonya truly is a gift from God!

2 out of 5 stars Cute stories but nothing more.......2001-07-10

I am trying my best to make telepathic contact with animals. To that end, I have read over ten books on the subject, this being one of them. I had problems with this book right from the start.

My biggest complaint is that this is a book, like most that I've read, of interesting stories but very, very, little on how to actually do this yourself. I buy these books so that I can learn how to do this... yet of the 207 pages in this book, 10 are devoted to teaching us how to do this ourselves! Too little for my taste plus those 10 don't give any real concrete instructions.

But there were other things about this book that stuck in my throat. Fitzpatrick opens the book by telling us how, when she was a kid, animals would tell her the towns gossip (who was having an affair, who was beating his wife, etc.)which they knew by simply eavesdropping on us. Then, further along in the book, she tells us that if we go on vacation without telling our pets first, they won't understand where we are and get scared. Huh? Which is it? do they understand our thoughts and words when it comes to planning an affair but not for planning a vacation?

If that is not enough to make you save your money then there's this...the Discovery Channel did a show on Animal Telepathy. One segment was about this woman. A veterinarian gave her six photo's of six animals from the clinic whose ailments had been already been diagnosed. She was to communicate with them and find out what was wrong with them. She blew it. She missed six out of six, not even close.

If you want a book that tells you, in explicit detail, how to do this, with exercises and background material that explains why, then I'd get "Straight From the Horses Mouth" by Amelia Kinkade. Of the ten or so books on the subject that I've read, this is the only one that really and truly tells you the how's and why's of it.

                5 out of 5 stars Dangerous Wishes.......2002-11-19

I liked the book for the most part but some of the characters were to unrealistic. My favorite part was when yhe boys saved the mad spirit from the pocket computer that she was stuck in.

The worst part of the book was when the khwan, a spirit of a body who is still alive, came out of Gope's body and went after Dom. The khwan of Gope was angry at Dom because Dom knew a secret that no one
                was supposed to know.

The most vivid were Dom And lek because the author,William Sleator, told their personalities and discriptions as if he knew them personally. The most vivid conflict was when Dom offended Lek about his culture by accident.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Book.......2002-01-18

This was the first book that I'd read by this author. It's very good, very interesting, and factual in most ways. It tells about Thailand and the lifestyle of the people who live there among the story. The story is about a boy named Dom who moves with his parents to Thailand for a while. As soon as they arrive, bad luck descends upon him and his family. Dom befriends a Thai boy named Lek who sells som-tam (a type of spicy food) in the city. The story progresses as pieces to the puzzle of what happened to Dom's sister and her jade necklace when she'd visited before, and what Lek is so mysteriously hiding are revealed. This author's very good and if you like this book, you should try another one of his. This book is part of a sequel, and that should be read as well.

                4 out of 5 stars Dangerous Wishes.......2001-04-10

Some people would like "Dangerous Wishes", some won't. I'm one of those who would like it. It wasn't to fast or to slow. There was more than one conflict, and very detailed. I think the best part is when they go to Lek's home village, and Glope gets mad at them. When Dom wakes up the next morning, seeing Glope's khwan staring at him, following him everywhere tring to "accidently" get him hurt or even killed. Willaim Sleator did a good job discribing everything, but I would say he did best on the khwan, and Lek. Lek has many problems in life, and Dom just makes them worse. Willaim made the khwan seem so real, and freaky. How its one goal was to hurt or even kill the person its after, wanting revenge. This is just one of the books Willaim Sleator did a great job on.
