Book Description
This classic combination of Leffingwell best-sellers includes is a vivid color history that chronicles the innovative American tractors of John Deere, International Farmall, Case, Ford, Allis-Chalmers, Caterpillar, and Minneapolis-Moline. The technological development of farm power is traced from the back-breaking days of horse farming through the steam-powered iron beasts and on to the development of the internal combustion engine and the creation of the tractor as we know it today.
Customer Reviews:
Even a city slicker will enjoy this book!.......2007-05-25
This is a huge, gorgeous book for the money. In addition to information about every tractor in America, the machines are presented in large, beautiful, color photos. The way the author tells it, the history of the tractor plays a big part in the history of this country, and it makes for good reading even if you are not a tractor enthusiast.
Book Description
To the tractor lover, there is something magical about the tractor in the pasture. It represents wisdom, strength, and former glory as the plower of soil, tender of crops, and the backbone of the nation. Much like the aging racehorse or the prize bull, after its working days are done, old tractors find resting spots on the edges of fields, alongside barns, or in the hedgerows.Today, these rusting piles of iron not only represent the memories of nostalgic farmers (past or present), they represent possibilities of restoration, rejuvenation, and new life as sparkling representations of an age gone by. This book captures scenes of old, retired tractors and couples them with the very sentiments that makes restoration an increasingly popular hobby.

America's Planetariums and Observatories: A Sampling.......2005-05-04
Very interesting information. This book gives a great overview of different planetarium facilities as well as some interesting insight into the science of astronomy. There is also some fascinating related material at the end of the book about increasing public interest and participation.

Customer Reviews:
Power training for all levels .......2007-06-08
This book explains, with easy to understand illustrations, various exercises for power, speed and agility (to enhance athletic performance). All exercises have little pictures of all sports which especially benefit from these exercises, like baseball, basketball or power lifting...even more `exotic' sports such as fencing, skiing or horseback riding.
The exercises suggested in this book can be used for specific athletic training or to add some fun and variety to your own workouts :-)
so do you need to jump?.......2007-05-28
this book is a top recommended reading from all leading authors in strength and conditioning. However, you should also buy the companion dvd in order to help facilitate the exercises in the book.
A Good Intro to the World of Plyometrics.......2001-08-08
This book does an excellent job introducing the topic of plyometrics to the reader. It discusses the different types and categories of jumps as well as the varying intensities. It even gives sport specific plyos as well as sample programs. However, this is not the definitive book on plyometrics. I think of it as more as a good reference tool. I would really recommend "High-Powered Plyometrics" for even more in depth info on this wonderful method of training.
Excellent Resource for your Personal Library.......2000-12-13
This is an excellent resource for the Strength & Conditioning professional. To begin with you get a little history and physiology of plyometrics. Then the author dicusses some of the basic nomenclature of plyometric training, along with the equipment that is needed.
The important part, of course, is the exercises themselves and the program design. There are nearly 100 exercises, each of them identified by symbols that show what sport can benefit most by a particular exercises. The exercises are divided into different sections: Jumps-in Place, Standing Jumps, Multiple Jumps, Box Drills, Bounding, and Medicine Ball. There is also a Sport-Specific chapter and sample programs for some top athletes. Programs include those designed for Lindsay Davenport (Women's pro tennis player, Rex Walters (NBA Basketball player), and Anthony Munoz (All-Pro offensive tackle).
This book includes information and exercises that can be implemented immediately into most strength and conditioning programs. I can highly recommend this book.

We use Donald Chu's techniques every day........2000-11-02
As a high school volleyball coach, I've found Donald Chu's book a terrific help in increasing our team's "credit card" jump reaches! Using Chu's techniques, we've noticed a great improvement in team performance and quickness, and I've been extremely pleased with the results.
If you're looking for a comprehensive book on plyometrics, check this one out. We use his system, and I can personally testify ... it works!
Book Description
Covers the Lost World of South America. The toughest treks and best jungle trips. Dynamite tours and kamikaze festivals. Where to eat, drink and sleep.
Customer Reviews:
If you are a outdoor buff you need this guide. .......2006-10-07
There was a day when `Rough Guide' and `Lonely Planet' were the best South America guides available for travelers that go "off the beaten path." But slowly, year by year, `Footprint's coverage of South America has improved, and now this Footprint Bolivia is one of the best guides out today.
If you are an outdoor buff you need this guide. This edition has an excellent section on `Trekking near La Paz' as well as a great section on ` Hiking, Biking and Climbing' in Bolivia. Like Alan Murphy's previous Bolivian guide, the History, Economy, Culture, People and Environment section is not to be skipped. Excellent.
The maps are very good and will help you locate accommodations and eateries quickly. The guide's recommendations for accommodations and restaurants are reliable. None of the restaurants that I visited were outstanding, but then, people do not go to Bolivia for the cuisine.
On the "downside", the section on language schools (p.134) is not listed in the index and only by luck would you stumble upon it. All Footprint guides continue the frustrating codes used to tell you the cost of rooms and food. Instead of just telling you that a room is $25-30, they use LL, L, AL, A, B, C, D, E, F, G. For restaurants they use dollar signs, $$$, $$, $. They should just tell us the cost of a meal -- $8 to $12. Simple. Offensive is Footprint's insertion of advertisements (hotels, tour companies and travel services) throughout the guide. Is it not enough that you paid $24.95 for the guide? The advertisements also cause one to question the integrity of the guide's recommendations, especially when an advertiser, with a full page ad, is also strongly recommended by the authors. Hmm.
Among the many Bolivian guides that I have taken with me and reviewed, two currently are recommendable: "Pocket Adventures Bolivia" (see my review) and "Footprint Bolivia". You won't go wrong with either one.
Strongly Recommended.

Reply to 'A reader from La Paz'.......2002-04-09
I was saddened by this review. As author of Footprint's Bolivia Handbook, and someone who lived in La Paz for a while, I have a deep affection for the country and its people. The accusation that I "speak in a very bad way" about the country is deeply offensive and shows that the reader hasn't bothered to read the text thoroughly before sharing their views. This guidebook is by no means perfect - no guidebook every can be - but at least it strives to be honest. Sometimes, unfortunately, certain people take exception to this policy.
for the beginning and seasoned traveller. . ........2001-02-13
I really enjoyed this travel book: Even though my family-in-law is Bolivian, this book still offered new information (to them and me) and really helped me get around. Lots of practical info on banks and restaurants for the seasoned traveller. The best part is all the historical and cultural information which is an interesting read in itself. Very up-to-date with funny descriptions of some of the more adventurous activities in Bolivia. Highly recommended.
A top drawer travel guide.......2000-05-12
A top drawer travel guide should not only give you reliable facts and information on the country you are going to, but paint pictures, tell stories and capture your imagination while stimulating your desire to go and explore.
The Bolivia handbook does all of these and more. Murphy's section on Culture is the best anthropological treatment in travel handbooks on the market today. He has a few week areas, but they are minor. His section "Responsible Tourism" (Eco-Tourism) could stand more in depth treatment of the state of ecology.
And, a personal area of irritation, especial for a "Yank", is Murphy (who is English) elected to use only the metric system, forgetting that most Americans have yet to grasp metric conversion. Thus, Lake Titicaca covers 8,300 sq. km., rises 5m each season and have temperature that get down to -25C. Hum. Recommended.
It is very deficient.......1999-07-27
I didn't like the author's view, respecting Bolivia, because it doesn't give areal idea about what this country really is, I think this guy had a very bad trip to Bolivia because he speaks in a very bad way about it. I advise to all of you for not to buy this book, it is really trash.

There's a startling, almost itchy moment in every adolescent's life when she or he first realizes that adults are fallible. Yet, for 14-year-old Charity, the revelation is even more profound: not only is her dad (the town's preacher) merely wrong about the eccentric Adrienne Dabney, he's dang-blasted and over-the-top wrong. Although she's always been a perfect preacher's daughter, Charity is about to shock the whole town by standing up to her father, proving him wrong in front of God and everyone. This riveting and acclaimed novel will resonate with any teen who has ever wanted to knock a little bit of sense into a parent's head!
Book Description
Things used to be normal in Casper, Alabama. Charity Pittman was a regular fourteen-year-old, the perfect daughter, following in her preacher father's footsteps. But then Adrienne arrived, with her big-city ways and artsy ideas. Reverend Pittman thinks she's the devil incarnate. Charity thinks she's amazing.
But no one knows what to think of Adrienne when she claims she's seen Jesus.
In the heartening and humorous book that made the National Book Award shortlist, Han Nolan visits a small town that's praying for a miracle but heading for disaster.
Reader's guide and an interview with the author included.
Customer Reviews:
For all of the people who need miracles........2005-08-11
The small town of Casper, Alabama is a happily quiet town where everyone knows everybody's business and no one seems to care what happens. But when Adrienne Dabney from New York moves in things get really shaken up. You see Adrienne is an artist and when she decides to do an `artists' fast where she doesn't eat for a month the local priest objects because he wants none of that East Coast hocus-pocus witch craft and sinning happening in his city. But Adrienne decides to do her fast anyways. A month later when she finally emerges from her home she brings the news that she has seen Jesus. This news brings an uproar and the people will be forever changed. This is a pretty good book!
Send Me Down A Miracle.......2003-10-14
Send Me Down A Miracle is the second book of Han Nolan's that I've read. Both of which have been fabulous. This book shows that relgion is a big part of what kind of person you are. Especially if your father is a Reverand, like Charity's is. When Adrianne comes to Kasper from NYC, Charity's entire point of view changes. She feels that Adrianne and anything she does is right and that G*d and her father are wrong. Everything changes after Adrianne annouces her vision of the Jesus chair. Now Charity doesn't know what to think. Her father is forcing her in one direction while her heart wants to go in the other. Send Me Down A Miracle is an amazing story of a girl who wants to do something for herself for a first. If you are religious or not, this book is still a great read.
Good Lessons..........2002-10-30
I enjoyed this book very much. It started off slow in the beginning, but then after a while it started to pick up. You can learn a lot from books and this is one that really does make you think about you, your family, religion, townspeople, and even your preacher. It taught a lot of lessons. I thought a lot about this book after I got done reading it and there are several things that still throw me off, but that's the joy about books, making your own opinion and own feelings. I highly recommend this to anyone.
Funny and sad at the same time........2001-10-11
The whole point of the book, I guess, is that adults are fallible. That's the story: Charity realizing that. While I don't much like her father (he beats her) I guess I can see that Charity loves him, and he, her. As an atheist, I found it kind of amusing the way people prayed and flocked to the Jesus chair. Though the thing with Mad Joe and Vonnie and Velita was incredibly sad. While some of the characters seemed stereotyped -- Charity's dad the hell-raising Southern preacher, for instance -- I thought it was a really good book. Han Nolan's one of my favorite authors and I hope she keeps churning out works like this for decades to come.
Awesome!.......2000-03-29
I just finished this one. WOW! I couldn't put it down. Han Nolan is one of the best writers I have ever read. All her books are just as great as this one. I can't wait 'till she writes another!
