    Book Description

BL Gives a definitive description and analysis of the main bank system BL Strong contributors BL Understudied subject BL Incorporates results of a major World Bank research programme BL Balances institutional description with financial theory and empirical analysis This volume looks at systems of corporate finance, concentrating on the Japanese main bank system. The remaining chapters describe different systems, assessing to what extent the Japanese system can serve as a model for developing market economies and transforming socialist economies. The basic characteristics of the main bank system are examined here, its roots, development, and its role in the heyday of its rapid growth. The volume looks at how the system has performed and at its strengths and weaknesses. It goes on to look at how the system has changed and what its approprate role is as deregulation, liberalization, and internationalization of Japan's financial markets have proceeded over the past two decades and a new issue securities market has emerged. A basic conclusion of the book is that banking-based systems are in most cases the most appropriate for industrial financing until a rather late stage of a country's economic and financial development. It aims to identify the conditions under which banks are better able that securites market institutions to evaluate the credit worthiness of borrowers and the viability of new projects, to monitor the ongoing performance of firms, and to rescue or liquidate firms in distress. Book Description

Increased longevity and better health are changing the nature of family life. In the context of changes in the world of work, increased divorce and a declining welfare state, multi-generation or "beanpole families" are a potential new resource for family support. Focusing on four-generation families and the two central careers of the life course--employment and care--Working and Caring over the Twentieth Century maps men's and women's lives in twelve families from 1910 to the late 1990s. Drawing upon new research which employed biographical methods, the book provides unique insights into processes of change and continuity and the ways in which people make sense of their lives.

            Book Description

Since their creation in 1958, the International Symposia on Rarefied Gas Dynamics serve as one of the main forums for the presentation of recent advances in scientific and technical fields involving physical phenomena and processes in gases in rarefied regimes. Symposia on rarefied gas dynamics are concerned with the properties and flows of rarefied gases and with the interactions of these gases with solid surfaces and force fields. The essential characteristic of a "rarefied flow" is a reasonably high Knudsen number or higher density flows where very small physical dimensions are relevant. Topics include: kinetic theory and transport phenomena; rarefied flow studies; plasma flows and processing; numerical methods; gas-surface interactions; particle models and procedures; microscale flows; multiphase flows; chemical reactions and thermal radiation; low density aerodynamics; jets, plumes, and propulsion; clusters, aerosols, and granular gases; and internal flows and vacuum systems.

For anyone who appreciates these curious, gentle and interactive creatures, this book is a joy to read. There is conspicuously little written about otters, mainly due to their reclusive nature. As mankind encroaches upon their habitats more and more, it is essential that we seek greater insight into their lives. The McCaskills have created one of the only books about otters that is non-technical, depicting the otters' lives with realism, compassion, and the respect and consideration that they are not often given. It reads like a novel, and is based upon many years of first-hand observation.

Finally, a chicks guide to the game that is smart, knowledgeable, and thoroughly female. If I wasnt already a football fan, this book would turn me into one.Star Jones Reynolds,co-host of ABCs The View Year after year, Sunday afternoons and Monday nights during the NFL season have belonged to men. While they cheer and argue play calls, the women in their lives are relegated to beer and chip detail. Its time for these women to join the action, and Holly Robinson Peete, star of 21 Jump Street, For Your Love, and Hangin with Mr. Cooper, and wife of NFL quarterback Rodney Peete, has written this hip, smart, cheerful guide to help them do so. Peete shares her infectious enthusiasm for pro footballand takes the complexity out of the game by breaking it down to its component parts. She explains the role of each position player, provides a rundown of all on-field penalties and referees hand signals, and offers an illustrated guide to some of the most common plays in the NFL. She gives her take on the most memorable plays in NFL history and dishes some inside dirtin a breezy, girl-talkin narrative that promises to turn the novice spectator into a well-informed football fanatic.

            5 out of 5 stars It's About Time.......2007-10-10

This is such a great book to have on the market! There are many, many women who already appreciate the game of football, and those who have a real desire to learn more about it. This book breaks it down in a way that is easy to understand and fun to read. Bravo Mrs. Robinson-Peete!

If you know nothing about football this will really help you. I knew a little about football to begin with but did learn some new things.
            Very easy to understand.

1 out of 5 stars Barbie's Guide To Football! Ugh!.......2007-09-11

I wanted to learn more about football, to have the fundamentals of the game explained in a clear and forthright manner. But whatever forthright, coherent explanations Holly Peete might have made about the game, whatever information I might have been able to gain from the book, were smothered in a candy-floss pink cloud of girlie drivel. I would like to learn about the strategic, team function of a "Tight End" without being subjected to a smug, yet insulting discussion of football players' backsides!
Her anecdotes about being able to watch football "with her man" or defend 'her man' against trash-talkers look like attempts to stake out feminist territory, but come off as if she is oblivious to being mocked by people who actually know the game.
As a discussion of the fundamentals of teams, strategies, and plays, this is somewhat of a useful resource, I admit. However, the actual information encompasses less than a third of the book's content, and is drowned, cloyingly, by failed attempts to use humor to connect to the women who might be reading the book. Instead of creating a sisterhood of football watchers, she winds up embarrassing us, and herself.

Within moments of cracking the cover of this book, I am depressed by my upcoming first trip to London. According to the author, it will be expensive, boring, and no one there will like me. Fun stuff.

Good basic information but I was hoping to find more "different" things to see & do. This is pretty standard stuff for a guidebook.

This book has about ten ideas and keeps repeating them over and over under different headings. What a waste.

This is one of the great travel guides for planning our trip to London. Where else can you locate the "Euro-Trashiest" hotel in London? It is chock full of information that I have been unable to find anywhere else. Although I may never need the gay/lesbian hotline for London, it's good to know it's there for other travellers. We were absolutely enthralled by the wealth of information on where to sleep, shop, eat, and entertain ourselves on any budget. It is the first time I can ever remember sitting down and reading a travel book for two-and-a-half hours straight. If you want to travel and get the true taste of your destination (instead of the cleaned-up tourist flavor), then the Irreverent Guides are for you!

3 out of 5 stars One of several books to take to London.......2000-10-05

I had been to London two times before but never to the "tourist" sites. Basically I wanted to know what was worth seeing and what wasn't. The book is good for that.

Two things are sort of lame: no mention of the Tate Modern, I had to find info on that from elsewhere. Secondly, no maps, just phone numbers. So this book is good as a companion. I also read London by Rutherford, very good history, and brought along Londonwalks by Powell. All three together were great.

              Book Description

Looking for a travel guide that goes where other guides fear to tread? One that rides roughshod over ad-copy puffery to smartly deliver the real scoop on a destination's sites and attractions? One that dares to be honest, hip, and fun? Look no more. Frommer's Irreverent Travel Guides are wickedly irreverent, unabashedly honest, and downright hilarious, and provide an insider's perspective on which attractions are overrated tourist traps and which are the secret gems that locals love. You'll get the lowdown on restaurants, lodging, and shopping, and even find out what the locals think of you. "Like being taken around by a savvy local," said the New York Times. "Hipper and savvier than other guides," concurred Diversion magazine. Never shy about confronting the issues, the Irreverents are guides to real travel in the real world.

London swings once again in the smart, savvy Frommer's Irreverent Guide to London, a deliciously honest insider's look at Great Britain's Gotham. Want to know where the royals kick back? What the locals really think of Tony Blair's Millennium Dome? The biggest shocker about tony London hotels? The neighborhood that's the capital of cool? You'll discover the best spots to savor curry, England's new national cuisine, how to find designer clothes at rock-bottom prices, and how to get theater tickets when the shows are sold out.

              5 out of 5 stars For the London-loving visitor.......2003-03-18

This book is fantastic if you have already been to London and have seen many, but not all, of the sights. It gives you good advice as to what places you can skip and what places are worth your time. It points out "tourist traps" that one may want to avoid if a leisurely vacation is what you are looking for. The shopping section is especially helpful.

This book was not helpful. It is written in a glib manner that "throws" bits of information at you without telling you any information that you can use. Itis also not organized in a helpful manner, so it is difficult to use the little information it has. Very disappointing.

              5 out of 5 stars Great guidebook.......2002-12-10

Having been to London before, I was looking for an easy to carry, concise book that would help me explore the famous and not-so-famous hot spots in the City. This book had the high quality you would expect from Frommer's and was organized in a logical, easy to read and find format. I would recommend this book for anyone who is interested in having stuff listed out and a digestible amount of prose.

If you think London is just emotionless guards in funny red hats changing places, or stodgy businessmen clad in overcoat-and-umbrella uniforms, think again. Kate Sekules brings to the printed page the endearing, the fun, and the very cool sides of London. In an entertaining and enjoyable style, she presents the lowdown on where to get great Sicilian pizza, where to "keep on abusing your liver" after the pubs officially shut at 11 p.m., and where to go at 3 a.m. to drink espressos with London's other insomniacs. She introduces all the neighborhoods and what's hot and happening in them, introduces you to the intricacies of London parking (should you be so foolish as to rent a car), and lets you in on the White Card, London's little-touted museum discount card.

Sekules knows where all the top chefs (and there are a lot of them in London now) do their culinary magic, when the summer session of the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts (a.k.a. the Prom) begins, and what there is to do in London on a Sunday. Of course she also provides the scoop on what you look for in a guide--accommodation options; where to eat; how to get around; where to party, enjoy the culture scene, and shop; and what else there is to do for fun. And for each category, Sekules includes innovative subcategories, such as Britishest, Eurotrashiest, Bargain beds, and Best health club under "Accommodations"; or Book before you fly, For kids, Overrated, and For oenophiles under "Dining."

All in all, Sekules has written a brilliant guidebook that is also a fun read and a great service to the London-visiting world. --Stephanie Gold

Written in the voice of an extremely out of touch dowager, this book is an utterly unreadable mish mash of irrelevant dish. An example of this really annoying tone as applied to her comments about the Metropolitan Hotel. "London's latest louche pocket grand, from the owner of the Halkin, is to it's neighbors-the Dorchester, Four Season's, Grosvenor House- as Kate Moss is to Liz Taylor. Gag me with a louche......

                Book Description

                Meet Octavia Clairbrook-Cleeve.
Yes, she may have a famous TV star for a mom.
And yes, she may have a posh-sounding name.
But there's no way she's anything like the Ÿber-shallow blondes at her private school! It's hard to remain grounded when the A-list girls in school are suddenly being nice to you, and a great-looking (and different from all the rest?) boy has you feeling pretty for the first time in your life. I mean, everyone loves the idea of going from the not-so-ugly duckling to total swan, but what happens when you have to lose your identity to do so? How's a girl supposed to remain true to herself in the midst of all the glitter and glamour?
Fans of The Princess Diaries and Gossip Girls will gravitate to this fresh new voice and ask for more books featuring this utterly likable protagonist.

5 out of 5 stars Better than some of the other teen books.......2007-08-21

I was really glad I found this book. I have read book after book after book in the Gossip Girl, It Girl, Clique, A-List... series, and WOW were they shallow. This book, however, proved that you don't have to be a snot just because you're rich. Octavia seemed real to me. I could identify with her a lot better than most of the character in other books.

5 out of 5 stars One of My Favorite Books.......2006-05-19

Octavia Clairbrook-Cleeve is the daughter of an actress and a director, which gives her "celebrity potential". She attends a fancy school for the children of celebrities, but has always felt like an outcast. Then she reluctantly goes to the birthday party of one of her least favorite people at the whole school, India Withers. But when she winds up kissing India's brother, she begins to second-guess her whole approach on life. Is she really destined for a life of fame and fortune?

I loved this book! It was cute, funny, romantic, and it kept me in suspense. The ending left a bit to be desired, but I was actually surprised because I picked up the book again and re-read the first few pages out of pure boredom, and it was actually almost as interesting as when I had first started reading it!

There were some curse words and a few references to adult content, but I recomned it to any girl looking for a cute story about a girl in love.

I can't wait to read the sequel!

                3 out of 5 stars DUUUUUUH........2006-04-06

God, I hate Octavia. No, actually, I hate all these chicklit protagonists who either refuse to accept the truth or are just too stupid to read the clues we readers have spotted since the beginning. It's especially irritating when the problem finally dawns on the protagonist like some kind of big revelation when we've all sat there for a while saying "DUUUUUUUUH."

Octavia is also one of the worst chicklit protagonists. She implies somewhere in the beginning that she's not shallow, but she is. She's also pretentious, which is always bad. Maybe if she were shallow but not pretending not to be, I'd hate her less. Maybe.

                5 out of 5 stars 100% recommended!.......2005-10-05

Such a funny book - sure, it's got the usual chick lit stereotypes but it's written so well you can just sit back and enjoy the ride! Loved the ending, too; it wasn't at all how I expected. And the Pygmy Blondes are HILARIOUS!

2 out of 5 stars predictable and shallow.......2005-06-21

Author Rose Wilkins brags on the back flap that this book was written as a bet: she worked at a publishing house reading submissions that were so bad that she was sure she could do better. Unfortunately, it's all too obvious that she was inspired by bad writing!
Her characterizations are shallow and predictable, and her dialog is unrealistic. My guess this is Ms. Wilkins' idea of what she imagines teenagers wish their lives were like: Octavia's the outcast, yes, but she's rich and privileged, the daughter of famous parents who always has a snappy comeback at the ready. Even in her awkward moments, Octavia is sure of herself. It's all just too easy, and no real emotion comes through in the writing.
My suggestion to Ms. Wilkins is to try again but this time get yourself inspired by some GOOD YA authors--try Megan McCafferty, Sonya Sones, Celia Moriarty for starters.
