        Book Description

“This book is a valuable addition to the relatively limited information available on the subject.” – International Agricultural Development on the first edition

Food processing is a valuable way of preserving food to increase food security, minimize waste and generate extra income.

This guide provides development workers and small-scale entrepreneurs with the basic information and advice that they need to set up a small-scale food processing enterprise. Part one considers the food processes that are suitable for different crops including fruit and vegetable products; cereal and pulse-based products; milk and milk products, and meat and fish products. Part two is an annotated directory giving the appropriate equipment needed to process a particular food, an index of manufacturers, the approximate costs and the names and addresses of manufacturers. The potential uses of various equipment is examined and much of the equipment is clearly illustrated.

In this new edition the main text which guides the reader through the stages of food processing activities has been reorganized and clarified, and the catalog section, listing suppliers in approximately 50 countries, has been completely updated.

            Book Description

This thoroughly revised textbook is a basic introduction to plasma phenomena in solar and stellar coronae emphasizing non-MHD aspects. The natural way in which the author unifies observations and theory gives a wide perspective to the subject. An important feature is the lucidly written presentation of the fundamentals of plasma physics. The basic theory thus developed is then extended to some exemplary and important observations of coronal dynamics, such as coronal currents, particle acceleration, propagation of particle beams, and shocks.

The book has grown from teaching introductory courses on plasma astrophysics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH). It addresses advanced undergraduates and first-year graduate students without a background in plasma physics. It will also be of interest to more senior research workers involved in coronal physics of the Sun and other stars, solar/stellar winds, and various other fields of plasma astrophysics.

As ecotourism booms, it's only natural that eco-themed guidebooks would boom alongside it. The Ecotravellers' Wildlife Guides series, endorsed by the Wildlife Conservation Society and researched by professional biologists, is one of the more credible brands in the swelling ecotravel ranks. The series provides an encyclopedic introduction to Central America's flora and fauna, as well as a friendly primer on the principles of ecotourism. These rich ecological contexts are accompanied by hundreds of pictures and photographs. Miraculously, the guides deliver solid science without growing stilted or boring--as evinced by sections with such titles as "Avian Mating Systems and Birds That Cheat" and "Frugivory: Animals That Eat Fruit and the Trees That Want Them To." The one element that's in surprisingly short supply is ecologically sound travel tips, from general do's and don'ts to a list of ecologically responsible tour operators and other eco-friendly establishments in Belize. This is mildly discouraging--learning how to travel responsibly is as important as knowing what you're going to see. But given the relative paucity of travel literature on Belize, the guide proves a valuable resource for anyone curious about the natural wonders of this increasingly popular destination. --Andrew Nieland

I actually saw this book while travelling in Belize and wanted it to help me identify all the great animals we were seeing, but it was rather expensive. I got it on Amazon when we got home and it really helped identify some of the things I had taken pictures of. Next time I visit Belize I will be taking it with me. Nice colour photos and descriptions with some interesting information about the natural history.

                From Planeta journal:

An impressive first edition, not as much a tourist's guidebook as a naturalist's handbook. Color illustrations document native birds, mammals and reptiles. The author provides a brief eco-history of the region as well as background on environmental threats and conservation. Excellent!

In an introductory note to the reader, Edward Hasbrouck answers the first question on everyone's mind when faced with a book like this--how useful is a book on Internet travel? The underlying assumption is that, much like the personal computer upon which one does one's travel research, the book is outdated and in some ways obsolete the day it's purchased. The real kicker here is that the author acknowledges this--in fact he beats the skeptics to the punch both by clearly defining his motivation for writing the book as well as conceding its shortcomings in chapters called "What This Book Is," and "What This Book Isn't." Hasbrouck defines his book as "part consumer adviser, part research assistant, part road map, and part technical manual"; it is not merely a list of Web sites--"Most of what I could say about any specific website or interface would be out of date by the time this book got to bookstores."

The Practical Nomad Guide to the Online Travel Marketplace is an invaluable tool for both the novice and the experienced in the world of travel e-commerce. More valuable than the comprehensive map he has drawn for how to get started is the healthy dose of skepticism and critical advice that Hasbrouck offers the new-millennium traveler--a refreshing change to the starry-eyed "You can do everything on the Internet!" approach. Honest, reliable, and incredibly resourceful, this guide is worth your time. --Daphne Durham

                  Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Internet and Travel.......2003-10-31

If an award were to be given to one of the most complete and informative guides pertaining to the topic of the Internet and travel, Edward Hasbrouck's book entitled The Practical Nomad Guide To The Online Travel Marketplace would probably merit nomination.

This softbound guide is particularly useful to the novice who may have little experience in surfing the net when it comes to the subject matter of travel.
The book is authored by Edward Hasbrock and published by Avalon Travel.

Edward Hasbrock is one of the world's best known authorities on around-the-world travel as previously exemplified by one of his other books entitled The Practical Nomad: How to Travel Around the World.
He is also an expert on international airfares and this expertise is certainly illustrated in the The Practical Nomad Guide To The Online Travel Marketplace concerning the topic of air travel arrangements.

One of the most noteworthy features about the publication is that within every chapter we have a brief resumé of the principal topics dealt within the respective sections.

Another excellent element of the book is its division into five main topics, research, reservations and purchasing, consumer protection, using the Internet while travelling and finally references.
No doubt these matters should be the traveller's main concerns when using the Internet as a tool when planning a trip. This should be the global picture of how to use the Internet when it comes to travel.

The usefulness of the tips and information presented by the author can best be exemplified if we only refer to the chapter pertaining to the evaluation of web sites.

Hasbrouck most aptly points out to his readers that many of the travel sites are nothing more than infomercials. Furthermore, there are sites where the research is very sloppy and often the authors of these sites have never been to any of the countries or cities they are writing about. This observation should give us something to ponder over when we are viewing any travel site.

Another useful insight made by the author is that we should combine research tools.
In other words we are given step-by-step guidelines as to what resources are available on the net and how best to use these resources when planning our trips.
We are advised that a combination of search engines, web directories as well as newsgroups should all be implemented in order to secure maximum results.
All of these resources are fully described and explained to the reader.

We are also informed as to what kinds of travel research are best done on the Internet.
Very often we tend to waste a good deal of time researching the Internet for the best deal when in fact it is far better to contact a good travel agent who very often can offer us something that is not found on the Internet.
I have had this experience many a time when I tried to track down the best airfare, when in fact it was my travel agent who gave me the best deal. Why? Because the travel agents have access to some resources that can never be found on any travel site.

When we do reach our destinations there is always the matter of keeping in touch with home. Where do we locate Internet connections? The suggestions given in the chapter dealing with this topic are of great practical use, especially for those of us who do not have the foggiest idea as to where to look for Internet accessibility.

There are many more useful tidbits scattered throughout the book, such as security and credit cards, consumer protection laws, fraud and scams, background information about destinations, Usenet Newsgroups. These topics are vital and important in understanding the methodology in using the Internet as a tool in planning our trips.

This is a guide well worth every penny, particularly for those of us who may not be fully cognizant of the full value of the Internet.
Perhaps we should rename the book Internet Travel 101!

1 out of 5 stars Hasbrouck, the author I'd least like to have over for dinner.......2002-12-19

Wow! This guy really thinks he's something. This book is page after page of just how witty/clever/smart the author belives he is, with very little valuable information. To be honest, I only got through about half of it. I learned nothing except Hasbrouck must really love to read his own stuff. There's nothing in this book you can't find by doing a simple search on yahoo or google. Do not spend money on this book!

5 out of 5 stars Great book on e-commerce.......2001-08-08

The book is easy-to-read, pleasant and extremely complete. The chapters concerning safety and privacy through the Internet are carefully detailed but not too technical, and I think everybody will understand them; furthermore they deal with problem concerinig e-commerce in general, not only online travel services. The last part of the book dealing with how to stay online while travelling requires more computer knowledge, but the author promply warns the reader before getting into geeky technicalities, so that it is easy to skip the difficult pages. As the book deals with an ever-changing subjects, updates are available at the author's web site, and it is always possible to send an e-mail and ask for explanation if something is not clear. It helped me a lot understand the online travel marketplace and how to make my purchases online more wisely.

It was a thriller so every one should read this book. I think that this is a good book because you would read it and then somthing would happen and you would get cought up in it and forget everthing else. Thats why its a good book. Agian every one should be forced to read it. You can tell the writer as taken his time and used it wisley. Because now he has a great book. read it or else. nothing will happen.

4 out of 5 stars The Cay Book Reveiw.......2006-01-23

The Cay by Theodore Taylor was a very good book in my opinion. I say that because the book has two very well described characters. One main character is Timothy a big, black man with white hair in his seventies. Another main character is Philip a white boy that is eleven and is blind for most of the story. The story began in February of 1942 at the beginning of World War Two.

The plot in this story was also very good. It begins on the small island of Willemstad that had been attacked by German submarines. Philip's mom and Philip both leave to go to America by ship (Philip's mom is afraid of airplanes and Philips dad has to stay on the island because that is where he works). Their ship gets torpedoed in the ocean and Timothy pulls Philip on his raft that he found (Timothy was one of the ship's crewmen). Then Philip goes blind from a wooden plank hitting his head. They drift around on the ocean for days then land on the cay. Timothy and Philip survive on the cay by eating sea grapes, coconuts, fish, and Langosta (a lobster without claws). While on the cay, Timothy dies from injuries received in a hurricane, and a few days later Philip is picked up by an American ship. In the end, Philip meets back up with his parents and they stay in Willemstad and don't move back to America.

One of the main themes of this book was racism. One example of racism used is when Philip's mom doesn't let him go down to the docks because of the black people there. Another is how Philip first responds to Timothy. Philip first thinks that Timothy is just an ugly and stubborn black man, but when Timothy dies Philip realizes that Timothy was only stubborn because it was the only way for Philip to survive alone on the cay. I thought that this was a great book that you should read if you like survival and adventure stories.

4 out of 5 stars Not as Interesting as the Cay.......2005-06-08

The life of our little young and mature character changes through out the story. He got rescued from the diminutive cay which is going to appear again. After rescued Phillip was passing through a hard time in his house, while in the other part 14 year old Timothy is living his own life trying to be a sailor. Timothy of the Cay was written by Theodore Taylor. It is a sequel but at the same time a prequel of the first story. It is a sequel because it tells you about the life of Phillip after the cay and it is a prequel because it tells you about Timothy's life before the cay.
Phillip is blind and he needs to make a very important decision. Timothy also has his challenge that at the same time is his dream and needs to solve it. Phillip talks and relates his problems with his parents and Timothy relates his problems with Tante Hannah and Charlie bottle.
Joaquin read this book carefully because it is kind of tricky. One chapter talks about Timothy and the other of Phillip. While he read he thought about what was going on so he wouldn't get lost. Joaquin felt sad for timothy and Phillip when they were in their ultimate test but he felt relieved when he read that they passed the tests. Joaquin's opinions are that there need to be 3 books one of Timothy's life before the cay, then the cay and then the life of Phillip after the cay. So it isn't all mixed up. When you start reading the begging of the story it seems really boring because it talks about the introduction of Timothy's life. Towards the middle of the story your eyes don't get red and tired anymore because it is interesting because the characters are having their quest and problems.
This book is for teenagers that like survival and realistic fiction books. The cay was more interesting than this one because it had more adventures. They have the basic part in common. Joaquin's recomendates this book to people who read and are interested in survival and realistic fiction books.

                  2 out of 5 stars Don't read it!.......2005-06-08

Is Timothy of the Cay as good as The Cay? No! Timothy of the Cay doesn't have a very interesting beginning. Timothy of the Cay is a story written by Theodore Taylor. This book is realistic fiction. This book is a prequel and a sequel of the cay, because it explains Timothy's life before The Cay, and Phillips life after The Cay. This book is a survival genre. I think that the story should have a better organization because a chapter about Timothy and then Phillip, and then Timothy and then Phillip. This isn't good because you forget parts of the story. Phillip is a boy who loves Timothy very much. He even thinks Timothy is his guardian angel. In same parts of the story I feel Phillip is crazy. Phillip's mother was the character I most hated in the story.
The second character I most hated was Phillip, because he is so racist at the beginning he doesn't even accept other type of people in his life! I don't know why Timothy even cared to help Phillip. I would have just thrown him to the Sharks! I've never read a book as boring as this one. The book never caught my attention. I read this book with total obligation of myself to finish it. Through the whole book the only thing I seeked for was that the interesting part would start.
For The Cay the sequel wasn't as good. Timothy of the Cay defrauded me because I liked threw ending of the first one so much better
