Book Description
The Internet and smart cards offer new opportunities to existing high street banks but they are also bringing new competitors to the market. At the same time, technology is not just changing the structure of the bank, but the reason for people using banks. This book will appraise the new developments in electronic payment systems and their strategic implications for banks and the customer interface. It will look at initiatives from around the world and assess customer attitudes to the new services. It offers a handy reference to the reader on the main services and their potential opportunities and problems involved. The book will include an appendix listing the main associations and regulatory bodies involved in this aspects of the banking sector.
Customer Reviews:
Vital, entertaining reading on banking in the 21st century........2000-01-15
Everybody talks about e-banking as if they know exactly what they are talking about, but all too often, they're just repeating some fairly shallow viewpoints they read in the business sections of the nationals. This excellent book, instead, sets the whole virtual banking revolution in perspective, tracing its origins during the 1970s and 1980s, and arguing persuasively that the whole business of e-banking is essentially a continuation of the battle which banks have always fought to justify their existance as fundamentally unnecessary 'middle-men' who are permanently terrified of being left out of the customer/seller equation. Full of juicy material which operates at both a strategic and tactical level, and particularly strong on the challenge posed by newcomers to the banking industry (Essinger calls these 'gatecrashers'), I think this book is essential reading for anybody who wants to master the developments in banking which are defining how the industry will develop during the 21st century.

Book Description
Chowder isn't like other dogs. For one thing, he likes peopletoys better than dog toys. He liked to read newspapers rather than fetchthem, and he would rather surf the internet and look through his telescopethan bury a bone. He just doesn't fit in with the neighborhood dogs, andthat makes Chowder lonely. When a petting zoo opens nearby, Chowder isdetermined to make friends with the zoo animals. And with a strong kick anda flying leap, Chowder finally finds a place where he can be comfortablebeing his silly, slobbery self, and makes friends by being true to hisquirks. Chowder is a hilarious and heartwarming story that introduces an endearingnew character to the picture book market.
Customer Reviews:
What an adorable book........2007-07-05
We originally checked this book out of the library and my daughter enjoyed it so much that we purchased it. We also purchased it for my mom who has an English bulldog. A sweet funny book.
very cute!.......2007-06-09
This book is relate-able for a lot of kids who are trying to fit in and make friends. It's a cute and funny story.
a must for bulldog lovers.......2007-04-20
Picked this up at the library because I love bulldogs, and now am buying it because my kids, 2 and 5, laugh at every funny moment, every time we read it. The illustrations are right-on and remind me of all the bulldogs I've ever loved...especially the one of Chowder riding in the shopping cart. I can't wait until my dad, another bulldog lover, has a chance to read it to the grandchildren!
Thinking Outside the Box.......2007-03-29
Chowder is a book that appeals to all age levels. If you are a dog-lover,this book is for you. If you like books with great humor, this book is for you. I like the way bulldog is portrayed as an individualist. Chowder shows us that being an individual is fun. Thinking outside the box, as Chowder certainly does, brings fun into life.
The illustrations are brilliant. Brown's excellent training is certainly evident throughout the book.
Chowder is a dog not afraid of being himself. This is a great book for teaching young people about being proud of who you are. Go beyond the surface of the story and dig for some life's lessons in this marvelous book!
nice graphics, wierd story.......2007-01-09
I know I'm not a kid anymore, but this story is rather out there. The graphics pulled me in though - nice to see something different. I did purchase this for my son - but he hasn't responded to it much yet.

A new petting zoo has opened in River Heights. Nancy, George, and Bess can't wait to check it out -- the zoo has the cutest shetland pony named Buttons. And it looks like the Clue Crew won't have to wait very long to get a glimpse of Buttons -- he keeps escaping from his pen and showing up all over town! He's getting pretty famous for eating the flowers in everyone's front lawns. As much as Nancy secretly wishes Buttons would turn up on her lawn, she knows it's important to make sure he stays put. The only trouble is, no one knows how he's getting out. Sounds like it's time for the Clue Crew to saddle up and settle this pony problem!

Can you guess who that might be?

A Young Animal Lover's Delight.......2000-08-31
Our almost 2 year old daughter fell in love with this book immediately! We took it with us on our vacation and it kept her completely happy during a long car trip and even during late nights in a tent. The illustrations are adorable and young children quickly identify with Teddy's experiences at the petting zoo.
We, as parents, appreciated the excellent use of vocabulary and the introduction of several not so common petting zoo animals (llama, tortoise and deer). The author has also conveyed through Teddy Bear a respect and love for these animals.
This is an excellent book for animal lovers of all ages to share!

Book Description
Sarah Preston has endured what no child should. Subjected to extreme and systematic sexual abuse from a "friend" of the family, she turned to her father only to experience the same treatment from him. Utterly devastated, Sarah even started to wonder if she was somehow to blame for this most unforgivable of betrayals. Driven to attempted suicide by the hideous behaviour of those she should have been able to trust the most, her story is one of a young girl whose life was nearly destroyed by the selfishness of three deeply troubled and wicked men. But Sarah is a survivor who has somehow found salvation. Her experiences bear testament to the enduring strength of the human spirit in the most unthinkable of situations. Living with The Past is a story of how love and courage eventually enabled an astonishing individual triumph over a childhood stolen by the evil of others.
Book Description
Once upon a time, they taught us to believe. They were the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team, a blue-collar bunch led by an unconventional coach, and they engineered perhaps the greatest sports moment of the twentieth century. Their “Miracle on Ice” has become a national fairy tale, but the real Cinderella story is even more remarkable. It is a legacy of hope, hard work, and homegrown triumph. It is a chronicle of everyday heroes who just wanted to play hockey happily ever after. It is still unbelievable.
The Boys of Winter is an evocative account of the improbable American adventure in Lake Placid, New York. Drawing on hundreds of hours of interviews, Wayne Coffey explores the untold stories of the U.S. upstarts, their Soviet opponents, and the forces that brought them together.
Plagued by the Iran hostage crisis, persistent economic woes, and the ongoing Cold War, the United States battled a pervasive sense of gloom in 1980. And then came the Olympics. Traditionally a playground for the Russian hockey juggernaut and its ever-growing collection of gold medals, an Olympic ice rink seemed an unlikely setting for a Cold War upset. The Russians were experienced professional champions, state-reared and state-supported. The Americans were mostly college kids who had their majors and their stipends and their dreams, a squad that coach Herb Brooks had molded into a team in six months. It was men vs. boys, champions vs. amateurs, communism vs. capitalism.
Coffey casts a fresh eye on this seminal sports event in The Boys of Winter, crafting an intimate look at the team and giving readers an ice-level view of the boys who captivated a country. He details the unusual chemistry of the Americans—formulated by a fiercely determined Brooks—and he seamlessly weaves portraits of the players with the fluid, fast-paced action of the 1980 game itself. Coffey also traces the paths of the players and coaches since that time, examining how the events in Lake Placid affected and directed their lives and investigating what happens after one conquers the world.
But Coffey not only reveals the anatomy of an underdog, he probes the shocked disbelief of the unlikely losers and how it felt to be taken down by such an overlooked opponent. After all, the greatest American sports moment of the century was a Russian calamity, perhaps even more unimaginable in Moscow than in Minnesota or Massachusetts. Coffey deftly balances the joyous American saga with the perspective of the astonished silver medalists.
Told with warmth and an uncanny eye for detail, The Boys of Winter is an intimate, perceptive portrayal of one Friday night in Lake Placid and the enduring power of the extraordinary.
Customer Reviews:
boys of winter ...........2007-09-05
this book is without a doubt the best book i've read on the 1980 usa hockey team . outstanding in every way. mr. coffey takes you inside the locker room of both teams and inside the lives of most usa players .
USA! USA! USA!.......2007-02-05
I can still hear the chants. Still feel the excitement. Still remember where I was, on the day a group of little known athletes beat the worlds best to move on to the gold medal game.
Mr. Coffey does a good job of bringing those moments back, although his concentration is soley on the one game itself.
A nice glimpse into those involved....both prior, during and since that momentous night (afternoon).
I enjoyed his job of retelling the event, although I have to admit, I popped "Miracle" into the DVD player about half way through the book in order to get a quick fix.
All in all.....a quick read and a nice way to bring those memories back to the surface.
I do believe.......2006-10-20
Although I wasn't born yet to witness the Miracle on Ice, this book almost makes up for it. Truly inspirational, especially the stories of Eruzione and Wells. A must read if you love to root for underdogs or if you are interested in what happened to the boys after Lake Placid.
Great Story From One of Nation's Best Sportswriters.......2006-07-18
Wayne Coffey is a wonderful sportswriter for the NY Daily News, so seeing his name on this book gave me every reason to believe I would like it. I was right.
A huge amount has been written and done about this team. There was a full-length movie, an outstanding HBO documentary and a made-for-TV movie (Karl Malden as Herb Brooks).
This book fills a lot of the gaps and gives a lot of insight into the individuals. I especially appreciated that Coffey interviewed many of the Russians, his sections on Tarasov and Tikhinov are fascinating.
Unlike Mr. Barat, I was able to follow the narrative of the book, it did not bounce around too much for me.
And while I would have preferred more coverage on the other games the team played, before and during the Olympics, that is a mild quibble.
The biggest gotcha in the book is when it talks about the game that the US played against the USSR two weeks before the Olympics. That game was won by the USSR 10-3 and it wasn't that close. Other sources said that both teams were trying 100%. Coffey believes that Brooks held back the US team a lot, not wanting to show his hand to them.
I rarely give 5 stars to a book, this one deserves them.
One Great Read!.......2006-06-27
This is one of the best non-fiction books I have ever read! Wayne Coffey gives a very detailed account of every aspect regarding the 1980 US Men's Hockey team, without becoming cumbersome. Very hard to put this book down. If you enjoyed the motion picture "Miracle", you will enjoy this book.

Great book.......2005-12-07
Yes, it's old. Yes, much of the data is outdated. But what isn't usable is at the very least amusing.
Excellent advice in 1989 and still mostly good today.......2005-10-27
I read this book back in 1989 when it came out. I was sitting in some airport east of the Colorado river waiting for a connecting flight when I stepped into the gift/book shop to get a soda and a candy bar. Somehow I spotted this book and bought it, and spent the rest of my waiting period and flight reading it.
The book is full advice regarding air travel that was excellent at the time. I haven't read the book since then, so I'm sure that a lot is out of date. But, I still use some of the major principles from the book when I fly today, particularly those relating packing and boarding and exiting the plane.
One example of the out of date nature of the book is that the author suggests that wheeled luggage will never catch on because they are just too noisy and embarass the user. While that statement might have been accurate for an older person in 1989, wheeled luggage is common now, and there are few people alive today who would avoid a wheeled suitcase for that reason.
The book is well written and the author has quite a sense of humor. It had a lot of helpful information at the time.
Interestingly, at the end of the book, the author asks people to write to him (c/o the publisher) and states that he intends to update the book periodically. Its too bad that he didn't.
If anyone knows what happened to the author, please let me know!
Perfectly done.......2005-08-14
OK, let's put some things in perspective here. This book was published in 1989 and the first three chapters on choosing your flight are totally out of date. Consider those three chapters a history lesson at best.
However, this book is extremely well organized and does offer good tips and advice. The writing is direct with no fluff unlike some of these new travel books. The author displays a good sense of humor which a nice bonus.
If you can get this out-of-print book for a couple of books somewhere, I believe it is well worth it.
It gets 5 stars from me not because it is a completely up-to-date book, but for the value I got out of it. How I wish this book would be revised for curent times!
Business/Travel.......2001-12-08
Okay, so I read this 1989 book about 5 years ago. It still has good advice for all but the most seasoned traveller.
