4 out of 5 stars Easy to read primer for new supervisors.......2000-09-21

I have read this book twice now, and both times found value in the suggestions and exercises presented. Each time I read the book I was at a different level of supervisory experience, and the specific self-development guidelines helped each time. The book outlined successful stress management and other paths to success in the workplace, as well as suggesting ways to make time for a life outside of work. Overall an enjoyable read.

4 out of 5 stars Good Introductory Text.......2000-05-31

A concise and clear introduction to the interstellar medium. Chapters 5 to 7 on radiatively excited regions and gas dynamics are particularly well written (half the book). The rest of the book is perhaps too concise to cover adequately topics such as dust properties and star formation.

        Book Description

The Interstellar Medium in Galaxies is a collection of seven reviews covering the following constituents of the interstellar medium: dust, molecular gas, neutral atomic hydrogen, ionized hydrogen, and hot gas, and covering the abundances of heavy elements in the interstellar medium and the role of star formation. The reviews not only provide a good background in these subjects, but also describe in detail the most recent advances in the area and discuss the current problems in the field. The properties of the different constituents of the interstellar medium are discussed within the perspective of the difference in properties of the parent galaxies and the environment. The interplay between star formation and the characteristics of the interstellar medium is also discussed in detail. This volume provides very up-to-date material on the subject of the interstellar medium in galaxies and is useful both as a basic reference for professional scientists in this field and as an introductory book for astronomers who want to familiarize themselves with this field. This volume can also serve as an accompanying text book for graduate courses on the interstellar medium.

          Book Description

Describing interstellar matter in our galaxy in all of its various forms, this book also considers the physical and chemical processes that are occurring within this matter. The first seven chapters present the various components making up the interstellar matter and detail the ways that we are able to study them. The following seven chapters are devoted to the physical, chemical and dynamical processes that control the behaviour of interstellar matter. These include the instabilities and cloud collapse processes that lead to the formation of stars. The last chapter summarizes the transformations that can occur between the different phases of the interstellar medium. Emphasizing methods over results, The Interstellar Medium is written for graduate students, for young astronomers, and also for any researchers who have developed an interest in the interstellar medium.

              Book Description

Every year Earth is bombarded with about 40,000 tons of extraterrestrial material. This includes microscopic cosmic dust particles shed by comets and asteroids in outer space, meteorites, as well as large comets and asteroids that have led to catastrophic events in the geologic past. Originally considered only a curiosity, extraterrestrial matter found on Earth provides the only samples we have from comets, asteroids and other planets. Only recently mankind has started to actively collect extraterrestrial matter in space (Apollo program, Stardust mission) rather than to wait for its delivery to Earth. Still, most of our knowledge of the origin and evolution of our solar system is based on careful studies of meteorites, cosmic dust, and traces of large impact events in the geologic record such as the mass extinction that terminated the Cretaceous Period and led to the extinction of the dinosaurs.
This book summarizes our current knowledge of the properties, origin, orbital evolution and accretion mechanism of extraterrestrial matter accreted on Earth and sheds light on accretion processes and fluxes in the geologic past. The chapters in the first part of the book are arranged in order to follow extraterrestrial matter from its origin in space, its orbital evolution on its way to Earth, its interaction with the Earth magnetosphere and atmosphere to its more or less violent collision with the Earth's surface. In the second part of the book several chapters deal with the present?day flux of cosmic dust and meteorites to Earth. Finally, several chapters deal with the reconstruction of the accretion history of extraterrestrial matter on Earth, starting with the most recent geologic past and ending with the very early, violent accretion period shortly after the formation of Earth, Moon and other solid planets in our solar system.

                Book Description

John Dyson has contributed to the study of the hydrodynamic processes that govern a wide variety of astrophysical sources which he has helped explain. In this volume dedicated to him, introductory reviews to a number of the key processes and to the sources themselves are given by leading experts. The mechanisms in which the multi-component natures of media affect their dynamics receive particular attention, but the roles of hydromagnetic effects are also highlighted. The importance of cosmic ray moderation and mass transfer between different thermal phases for cosmic ray moderation and mass transfer between different thermal phases for the evolution of flows are amongst the topics treated. The main types of regions considered include those where stars form, the circumstellar environments of evolved stars, the larger scale interstellar structures caused by the mass loss of stars, and those where the lines of AGNs form.

The reviews complement one another and together provide a coherent introduction to the astrophysics of diffuse sources suitable for postgraduate students and researchers in astrophysics. Individual reviews stand alone and are suitable for an audience that includes advanced undergraduates doing final year projects.

                  Book Description

The authors measured atomic hydrogen, the principal component of the interstellar medium in the Milky Way, over a five-year period using the 25-meter radio telescope of the Netherlands Foundation for Research in Astronomy. Displayed in several projections, each map corresponds to a particular velocity interval; separation by velocity roughly corresponds to separation by distance, or by energetics. The Leiden/Dwingeloo survey covers the entire sky above declination -300, on a half-degree grid, over a velocity range of 1000 km/s at 1 km/s resolution. The limiting brightness temperature sensitivity is 0.07 K. A CD-ROM also accompanies the Atlas, and contains the entire dataset of the Leiden/Dwingeloo survey in computer-readable form. The CD-ROM also contains color images in GIF format, as well as animations displaying the 3-dimensional data cube.

                        Book Description

Solid particles are followed from their creation through their evolution in the Galaxy to their participation in the formation of solar systems like our own, these being now clearly deduced from observations by the Hubble Space Telescope as well as by IR and visual observations of protostellar disks, like that of the famous Beta Pictoris object. The most recent observational, laboratory and theoretical methods are examined in detail. In our own solar system, studies of meteorites, comets and comet dust reveal many features that follow directly from the interstellar dust from which they formed. The properties of interstellar dust provide possible keys to its origin in comets and asteroids and its ultimate origin in the early solar system. But this is a continuing story: what happens to the solid particles in space after they emerge from stellar sources has important scientific consequences since it ultimately bears on our own origins - the origins of solar systems and, especially, of our own earth and life in the universe.

                              5 out of 5 stars Superb book.......2007-09-19

I used this for my first tri. Harr used a unique approach and asked about 40 questions to categorize your time availability and your current level of fitness. Then he had a program designed specifically to increase your stamina in each discipline. This book was great for learning the basics and understanding about building a 'base' and strengthening yourself. It was helpful for eating habits but should be supplemented with another source. It was recommended to me and I recommend it to my friends.

2 out of 5 stars misleading planning & time frames for a beginner.......2007-09-05

unfortunately, the magical transformation of the author into a competitive athlete is a unique event, not one that readers will replicate easily (or ever!), especially following the plans inside.

the author ignores the base building necessary to race the events. athletes need to train their musculoskeletal structure to take the abuse of workouts as much as they need to get their hearts up to speed. this is best done slowly and incrementally. i think if you have been a regular athlete for at least a year before using the plan in this book, you may be fine.

if you are beginning in any of the three sports, i'd advise another book to show the real process of developing the appropriate base needed to compete without injury. Look up the titles by Joe Friel for more complete information on how to structure a training plan.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Weekend Triathlon Training.......2007-08-12

If you've recently started getting into triathlon then this is the book for you. It is simple, concise, and does an excellent job of bringing beginning triathlon into reach for the everyday joe.
It is broad enough in its content to cover most topics the amateur triathlete needs to know, yet specific in a number of training models to help you select the right program for your body and skill level. Great recommendation here.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for first triathlon.......2007-07-24

I ordered this book a few days too late. I had completed my first sprint distance triathlon and then received the book about 3 days later. After reading it, I found that it would have been extremely useful BEFORE doing my first triathlon and less useful after completing my first triathlon. A lot of the information in there I had now learned by doing. It gives some helpful suggestions, but after doing your first one I feel that there are better books out there for taking you further. After I did my first triathlon and I plan on doing another one, I feel this training plan does not suffice and I will need to search out more elaborate materials. All in all, great book for the beginner triathlete BEFORE their first race, but it's not a bad book if you still have a lot of questions.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book from couch to finish line.......2007-07-10

What a great book for beginners. I completed a sprint distance without books... and than bought this and the triathlete magazine book. This is much more approachable. The book is written in plain english with lots of practical tips.

Only complaint (and this is minor) is that there is very little on recovery.

It is worth 2 or 3X the cost if for no other reason than to provide a calming "voice".

                                Book Description

A girl discovers she has a half brother

Charlotte Flannigan (Tottie, for short) leads a conventional life in a conventional family. Her father is a well-respected pediatrician, her mother a popular newspaper columnist, and her younger brother a talkative but otherwise okay kid. But on an ordinary Saturday afternoon, Tottie’s comfortable life is threatened when the doorbell rings. She answers it to find a teenage boy, who looks eerily like her father, standing there. A stranger, but not quite a stranger. His name is Zachary Pearce, and he is her father's – and not her mother's - son.

Told through the alternating perspectives of Tottie and Zach, Colby Rodowsky's novel explores the ramifications of a sudden change in the makeup of a family. Fear, resentment, desperation, and potential for love all surface in this honest and heartfelt story.

                                3 out of 5 stars Family Secrets.......2007-04-24

Tottie, a thirteen-year-old living with her parents and her little brother, thought her problems were already bad enough. Her brother is bratty and sometimes gross, and her mother writes a newspaper column that often gives embarrassing details about Tottie's life. At least her father is perfect, and her family is pretty tolerable most of the time.

Then a seventeen-year-old boy who looks just like her father shows up at the door. Zach is her father's son; his mother was a woman her father knew when he was in medical school. When this woman found out she was pregnant, she and Tottie's father decided that they would give the baby up for adoption, but then without Tottie's father's knowledge the woman kept the baby and raised him by herself.

Zach has always known about his father but never tried to contact him. But then his mother got sick with cancer and rapidly died. Before she died she wrote down everything she knew about his father and made him promise that when she died he would go to see his father. Zach didn't plan on really doing it, but then someone called social services when they found out he was living alone, so he decided to find his father instead of going into foster care.

Tottie's parents immediately take in this boy and insist he stay to live with them, and Tottie's little brother loves him from the start. But Tottie can't warm to him and especially can't deal with the fact that her father isn't as perfect as she had thought he was.

I liked having two different points of view in this story; it was good to see what two characters had to say about the same situation. I also liked the different ways the different characters related to Zach when he arrived, especially the grandparents.

Tottie's venom toward Zach seemed unwarranted, though. She should at least have had a reason to hate him so much, even if it was just that her parents' attention shifted. But there was no real evidence of that, even.

                                3 out of 5 stars Family Redefined.......2005-11-27

When a boy who looks disconcertingly like her father shows up on her doorstep, 13-year-old Charlotte a.k.a Tottie is furious at the disruption to her seemingly idyllic life. Children often have trouble thinking of their parents as sexual beings, and Zachary is in-her-face proof that her father had a relationship prior to his marriage. While Tottie struggles with this reality, Zach is contending not only with a new ready-made family but also coping with the recent death of his mother while attempting to develop a relationship with a father he has never known. Family is redefined in this novel about the realities of blood relationships.

The two-sided telling offers both sides of the story. Distinctly voiced chapters alternate between Tottie and Zach to give the reader gets a clear understanding of how both characters feel. Eventually, Tottie and Zach come to understand one another. So often, families gloss over issues or sweep things under the carpet. This family comes out in the open. It is refreshing that Tottie not only breaks down at the end and says how she really feels, but also finds a way to resolve her feelings.
The emotions feel genuine, the story and characters are empathetic and real, and the plot is well resolved. Not a necessity, but a nice addition to middle school collections - perhaps the paperback will have a more attractive cover.
