3 out of 5 stars A nice, basic introduction to the CCC.......2006-03-19

If you've visited many National or even State Parks, you more than likely have observed and benefited from the efforts of the Civilian Conservation Corps. It was from such visits to the Parks that sparked my interest in learning more about the CCC.

Remarkably, there appears to be somewhat little written about the Corps, so Stan Cohen's "The Tree Army" became a must read for me. While it's described as a pictorial history (there are in fact plenty of pictures, and pictures often do say 1000 words), there is still sufficient reading to help paint a more complete description of the CCC.

Mr. Cohen adeptly covers the history of the CCC from the very beginning (thanks to the uncommon foresight of President Franklin Roosevelt) through its end during WWII, the dozens of camps, what camp life was like, the projects typically undertaken, and the training and education of the enrollees. Sufficient pictures help tell this story at all points. And to keep the record straight, the CCC undertook MANY, MANY projects outside of the State and National parks I alluded to earlier.

The story of the CCC does in fact need to be known by far more citizens today. What the CCC boys accomplished--both in their projects, financial support for them families during the Depression and post-Depression years, the skills and trades they learned in the CCC, and their immediate contributions to War World II--are just way to substantial to be overlooked.

This book is a nice introduction to all of that. Despite my three stars, this is a good book; I felt that, for my tastes, it needed to go into more detail on what the life of the average enrollee was like and paint an even more clear picture of the CCC and its impact on the communities it served.

      5 out of 5 stars A great book, a little-known story..........2003-11-21

A very interesting account of the Civilian Conservation Corps
of the U.S. government in the 1930's, this book is chock full of
intriguing photographs of the camps and the workers. Few people
today are familiar with this story, yet it should be known to all
Americans. My favorite picture is one of the members planting
trees and removing the old battlefield avenue around the statue
of the 155th Pa. Vols. on top of Little Round Top at Gettysburg,
PA. To look at it today, you would never know that a road once
      existed there.

          Book Description

IAU Colloquium 165, Dynamics and Astrometry of Natural and Artificial Celestial Bodies, was held in Poznan, Poland, in July 1996, bringing together over 200 scientists from 27 countries who discussed their work in 179 oral and poster presentations. The present volume contains 83 of the papers presented at the meeting.
The meeting brought together specialists from diverse fields who focused on the very close collaboration between dynamics and astrometry, where one discipline contributes to the progress of the other.
The oral sessions were organized into general categories pertaining to:
This volume is divided into seven parts, comprising 83 contributions, a list of participants and an index.

            Book Description

This volume contains papers presented at the US/European Celestial Workshop organized by the Astronomical Observatory of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland and held in Poznan, from 3 to 7 July 2000. The purpose of the workshop was to identify future research in celestial mechanics and astrometry and encourage collaboration among scientists from eastern and western countries. Also an emphasis was placed on attracting young members of the fields from around the world and encouraging them to undertake new research efforts needed for advancements in those fields. There was a full program of invited and contributed presentations on selected subjects and each day ended with a discussion period on a general subject in celestial mechanics. The discussion topics and the leaders were: Resonances and Chaos - A. Morbidelli; Artificial Satellite Orbits - K.T. Alfriend; Near Earth Objects - K. Muinonen; Small Solar System Bodies - I. Williams; and Summary - P.K. Seidelmann. The goal of the discussions was to identify what we did not know and how we might further our knowledge. It was felt, in addition, that Poznan, Poland, with a core of scientists covering a range of ages, would provide an example of how a research and educational group could be developed elsewhere. Also, Poznan is a central location convenient to eastern and western countries. Thus, the gathering of people and the papers presented are to be the bases for building the future of astrometry and celestial mechanics.

                  Book Description

                  "The spell of Alaska," Ella Higginson wrote in 1908, "falls upon every lover of beauty who has voyaged along those far northern snow-pearled shores...or who has drifted down the mighty rivers of the interior which flow, bell-toned and lonely, to the sea.... No writer has ever described Alaska;
no one writer ever will; but each must do his share, according to the spell that the country casts upon him."
In A Republic of Rivers, John Murray offers the first comprehensive anthology of nature writing in Alaska and the Yukon, ranging from 1741 to the present. Many of the writers found here are major figures--John Muir, Jack London, Annie Dillard, Barry Lopez, and Edward Abbey--but we also
discover the voices of missionaries, explorers, mountain-climbers, Native Americans, miners, scientists, backpackers, and fishermen, each trying to capture something of the beauty of this still pristine land, to render in their own words the spell that the country casts upon them. The range of
viewpoints is remarkable. With Annie Dillard we look out at ice floes near the remote Barter Island and see "what newborn babies must see: nothing but senseless variations of light on the retinas." With Frederick Litke we mourn the senseless slaughter of sea mammals. We join scientist Adolph Murie,
the father of wolf ecology, as he probes the daily life of an East Fork wolf pack. And we listen as Tlingit Indian Johnny Jack relates the difficulty of maintaining a dignified life close to nature at a time of cultural upheaval for his people. Most of these selections have never appeared in any
anthology and some entries--particularly those written by early American and Russian explorers--have never been available to general readers.
There is laughter here and there is sorrow, but finally there is communion and liberation as generation after generation encounter the unsurpassed beauty and wildness of the Arctic. Taken together, these forty-nine men and women provide a unique portrait of America's final frontier.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to keep by the head!.......2007-06-08

This is a great book for new sailors and old.... Keep it by the head and you will enrich you sailing and "sitting" experience (or "s_itting " experience, ha, ha)...Full of great items from the highly technical to the ethereal--all concerning our common lust for the sea! Great gift for the sailor who has nothing or everything! It has a wealth of usefull information.

                        5 out of 5 stars Bluewater sailor.......2007-04-13

Great book. Interesting and very funy. When you sail for a while you notice that things like the "black Box" described in the book are true. Very good advises...good companion if you planning bluewater sailing.

5 out of 5 stars For the Novice Boater.......2007-04-12

This reference guide is perfect for the novice boater just learning the ropes. It's organized alphabetically to make finding topics easy.

3 out of 5 stars Good for the novice.......2007-01-12

We enjoyed reading this book, but it wasn't what we had hoped. It is a better learning tool for the novice. The entries to the book are written in a alphabetical format. For example, entries about 'sails' are under S. We hoped it would be more of a non-fiction story form where one sailer's knowledge can help other sailers undergo new adventures. You'll read it once and then leave it on the shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for boaters........2007-01-09

This is a great little reference guide for all boaters. You can get an answer to almost any boating question.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping and real.......2006-11-30

Teens Maggie and Mike are responsible for their four-year-old half sister Courtenay while their parents take a long-postponed vacation. Since they enjoy their time with the active little girl, they figure a few days alone won't be a problem.

The first morning their parents are away, Maggie and Mike put Courtie on the bus...only to learn she never arrived at school. They are forced to cut their father and stepmother's trip short as the family entreats friends and neighbors to hang posters and canvass the area.

Throughout the nightmare, 15-year-old Maggie keeps getting harassing phone calls from an anonymous male. She isn't sure if the person has anything to do with her little sister's disappearance, but she's rattled nonetheless.

Although geared for the YA level, the story is very real. Martin does a good job depicting how easily a child can be snatched - even a smart one, who has been warned of all the world's dangers by her loving family. She also shows how it takes but a moment to turn a family's mundane everyday life into a relentless nightmare. Nothing else really seems to matter when a loved one is missing.

This book is called "Missing Since Monday" by: Ann M. Martin
The book is about a girl named Maggie, her brother Mike, and her little sister named Courtney. Maggie's parents are divorced and her dad got remarried.
One day Maggie's dad and her step mom went on their honeymoon. Now Maggie and Mike have to take care of Courtney. The next day Maggie puts Courtney on the school bus and she never came back home that day. Now she is getting mystery phone calls, and she doesn't know what to do.
Find out what will happen next.
I recommend this book to people who like mystery books.

2 out of 5 stars NOT A VERY GOOD BOOK!.......2005-04-29

I guess this wasnt the type of book for me... it was boring, not surprising, and it felt like 3 months had gone by since i started the book (took me 2 weeks to read)! If i hadn't had to read this for school I would've never finished it!

5 out of 5 stars The Truth Hurts.......2005-04-04

This story takes place in different place's cause two siblings (Mike and Maggie) go around and get shocked and scared a few times. It's a big city, and lot's of witnesses.

This book is about Courtnay Louis Ellis (4) gets kidnapped while going into school, and Maggie (14) is trying to get her mom out of the frame to prove she didn't do it. Maggie is also getting disturbing calls. But no ransom note or call shows up yet and the parents are on vacation.

In my opinion this story is fantastic and it puts you in suspense!
It will consume you. I could not stop reading it for nothing.

I would recommend this book because its suspenseful, entertaining, dramatic, and realistic.

5 out of 5 stars Last Days of School.......2004-05-29

Maggie took her four year old sister Courtenay on the bus ,so she can go to her pre-school,but Courtenay's school called home that afternoon saying Courtenay didn't attend school that day.Maggie calls the cops saying Courtenay was missing . Mike starts calling everyone they know. The detectives help them find her.Throughout the book the detectives ,Maggie ,Mike an there school try to find there little sister.

The best partof the book was the suspense because everytime you stop reading you just want to keep on reading to find out what happens next. Also, the book was very realistic for the reason that everyday there are kidnapping in other places around the world .In addition, it was emotional when they didn't get information about Courtenay. For a person like me who doesnt like reading you will like this one. THE ENDING WILL SURPRISE YOU!!!!!!!!
