        Book Description

"With the publication of Theory-Driven Evaluations, Huey-Tsyh Chen has given us an ambitious volume. . . . Indeed, it is the aspiration of this book to provide a conceptual framework that integrates the diverse approaches and paradigms of evaluation. For those of us accustomed to the rhetoric of the paradigm wars that have been raging in recent years, it is refreshing to find a text that works so assiduously at reconciliation. . . . There is much that is useful in Chen's analysis. He gives us a full and thoughtful book that attempts no less than the construction of a conceptual framework for all of program evaluation. . . . It provides an impressive compendium of source material and references spanning not only evaluation, but related work in economics and public policy (this alone is worth the price of the book). . . . Chen's Theory-Driven Evaluations provides a stimulating, even heroic attempt to bring some conceptual integration to a field that has been too long dominated by methodological paradigms and procedural particulars." --a prepublication review for Evaluation and Program Planning "Generous use of examples which are well selected and lucidly summarized." --Contemporary Sociology "Chen introduces a new, comprehensive framework for program evaluation that is designed to bridge the gap between method and theory-oriented perspectives. . . . For program planners, decision makers, scholars, and students, this volume clarifies, illuminates and provides unique insights into the conception, construction and implementation of a wide range of programs. . . . The research examples used in the discussion draw upon various areas, such as education, welfare, health, criminal justice, job training [and] family construction to attract a wider audience." --Journal of Applied Rehabilitation Counseling Program evaluation has traditionally emphasized the application of social science research methods in evaluation activities. However, there is a growing awareness that program theory is vital for broadening the scope and enhancing the usefulness of program evaluation. In Theory-Driven Evaluations, Huey-Tsyh Chen introduces a new, comprehensive framework for program evaluation that is designed to bridge the gap between the method- and theory-oriented perspectives. He provides an intensive discussion of the nature and functions of program theory, approaches to constructing program theories, and the integration of program theory with evaluation processes. Specific types of theory-driven evaluations, as well as principles and guidelines for application are developed for meeting different policy purposes. Application of systematic strategies is illustrated by concrete examples from a variety of evaluation studies in different fields. The presentation of this new perspective directly addresses the needs and concerns in both the professional and applied areas of program evaluation. For program planners, decisionmakers, scholars and students, this volume will clarify, illuminate, and provide unique insights into the conception, construction, and implementation of a wide range of programs.

        5 out of 5 stars Evaluation Classic.......2007-06-27

Chen's book, and his subsequent work, introduced the role of program theory and program logic diagrams as core elements essential to evaluaton method. This approach supports the blending of "hard science" schools of evaluation that stress scientific method, random samples, experimential and quasi-experimental design with the naturalistic, social relations oriented schools by emphasizing the importance of bringing to an evaluation extensive subject-matter knowledge for the development of program theory. Program theory (and associated logic diagrams) then takes precedence in framing the research questions and indicating how methods should be deployed, as well as how quantitative and qualitative methods should be configured in an evaluation. This is different from the simple joining of impact and process evaluation on a project because it moves some elements of process evaluation to the heart of strategy for impact evaluation, and improves both quantitative and qualitative results for both internal validity and generalization. Chen proposes an extensive typology for these relationships. In some ways the book documents a conceptual breakthough for evaluation that also occurs in every social science that has experienced a "struggle of methods" between schools of quantitative and qualitative insights. There are "many roads to the city," and Campbell's quasi-experimental design school, for example, includes these synergies in practical work. But this is the book that made the difference in this field (evaluation). It is quite well written, clear, and can serve as a core text on evaluation method.

            Book Description

Program Theory-Driven Evaluation Science fills the gap between 21st century literature on evaluation and what is happening in practice. It features detailed examples of how evaluations actually unfold in practice to develop people, programs, and organizations. Commonly accepted strategies for practicing evaluation are outlined, followed by comprehensive accounts of how those strategies have played out in the face of the complexities and challenges of "real world" settings. In so doing, the book illustrates the authentic challenges of implementing an evaluation approach in practice.

Author Stewart Donaldson provides a state-of-the-art treatment of the practice of program theory-driven evaluation science. Each case follows a three-step model: developing program impact theory; formulating and prioritizing evaluation questions; and answering evaluation questions. Initial chapters discuss the emergence of program theory-driven evaluation science and specific strategies for carrying out each of the three steps. Succeeding chapters address recent applications and practical implications of evaluation science. The challenges and lessons learned from the cases are then reviewed.

This volume is of significant value to evaluation practitioners, professors and trainers of evaluation, evaluation researchers, and advanced undergraduate and graduate students, and serves as a text for courses in evaluation and applied research methods. It is also of great interest to those interested in the connections between work and health, career development, human service organizations, and organizational improvement and effectiveness.

                    Book Description

In this book, eco-agriculture is explained — from the tiniest molecular building blocks to managing the soil — in terminology that not only makes the subject easy to learn, but vibrantly alive. Eco-Farm truly delivers a complete education in soils, crops, and weed and insect control.

Chapters provide detailed discussions of trace elements, tillage, the N,P&K concept, animal health, crops, soil carbon and calcium, insects, soil life, crop rotation, and much more.

This should be the first book read by everyone beginning in eco-agriculture . . . and the most shop-worn book on the shelf of the most experienced.

I left college full of scientific knowledge and spent thirty years amending that with experience. Though I cannot subscribe to Steiner's Bio-dynamics I do follow sustainable farming techniques - those thirty years have taught me something. In this primer, that has been distilled and laid out clearly and without preaching as many "eco" texts do.

An excellent essay on conservative farming, blending the agro-science with eco-science.

If only every person that ever eats food read this book as a set work at school, the level of intelligence across the literate world would double. No longer would advertising companies have such a gullible audience. No longer would the medical and medical insurance industry have such a ready customer base.
And most of all, the customer of the farmer/producer would not tolerate the practices in industrial agriculture, and in turn, small farmers would not be trying to ape their "big brothers"

5 out of 5 stars Rough but Ready.......2006-06-05

I agree with the previous reviewer - that Charles Walters is a bit condescending, but we allow this to genius in any other discipline. The book is billed as "the definitive guide to managing farm and ranch soil fertility etc..." But this book is not a technician's handbook about farming, it is a primer for a massive paradigm shift in the way we look at the entire eco-sphere, about our estrangement from the soil from which we derive our "permission for life" - and about a milieu of degenerative disease which necessarily flows from such a tragic estrangement.

Part of Walter's arrogance is really just conviction. It is the utter conviction of a Socrates or a Copernicus or an Einstein, who will brook no humility about truth. A sociopath does not a prophet make, but a true prophet will always be marginalized as one by the sociological institution from which he speaks. And this is because institutional science, "tries to harmonize the latest discoveries with the incongruities of its false position."

Paradigm shift is not fun. It is adventurous, but painful. No one looks for the painful adventure until the pain of institutional inertia becomes unbearable. Walters himself proposes a paradigm shift of such massive proportions that it quite exceeds his own modest proposals. Unless our agronomy exceeds the righteousness of the "environmental movement" we will never see symbiosis in our generation.

5 out of 5 stars The best source on caring for the soil I have ever read!.......1997-07-18

Even though the beginning of the book has a slightly arrogant writing style, it is the best book on sustainable agriculture I have ever read. It is filled with the science behind the claims that, although complex, is easy to understand. It will make converts of even the most chemically dependent gardener or farmer if they have an open mind going in. It truely is THE organic primer Bible

The arrival of Hale-Bopp added a lot to my winter of 1997. I loved its ever-present image in the night sky. I'd open the front door and look slightly skyward. There it was, for months on end; a beautiful gift. I was sorry to see it go, so I went to books-in-print to see what I could actually find out about the comet. I found, to my delight, Mr. Hale's generous read. He lets us share his joy in having found the comet, and teaches a lot about basic astronomy in the process. Yes, Alan Hale's ship came in, and it was a beautiful comet. Fortunately, he brought it to life in a book, too. So, now that the comet is out of our realm of sight, grab a deck chair and read about it! You'll be glad you did.

                      Book Description

The search for useful biochemical compounds and genes in nature has been the focus of international negotiations for more than a decade, yet debate on the terms for access to genetic resources, traditional knowledge and benefit-sharing is far from settled.

This book examines the optimal property rights structures and institutional mechanisms for regulating bioprospecting for drug research. Focusing on the economics of contracts, it shows that the rights exchanged are complementary at each stage of drug discovery and development of genetic resources. The author examines bioprospecting collaborations in several countries and critiques institutional and contractual factors that led to their success or failure.

This is one of the first books to address the contractual complexities of bioprospecting for drug research and is thus a key text for policy makers, practitioners and scholars in the areas of law, economics, ethnobotany, anthropology, and environmental sciences.

5 out of 5 stars best golf information.......2007-10-05

This is a must read book for every golfer. Especially mid handicapers (10- 15). He focuses on how the golf swing should feel, from grip to impact and completion of swing. He gives excellent examples for the feel, especially feather feel. I am reading this book every chance I get, I bet you will to.

4 out of 5 stars Very analytical book - good pictures.......2007-07-25

I found the pictures in this book helpfull - they also look pretty cool. Some of the explanations of the optimal body postures are not straightforward and they require a second or a third reading - however this is a compliment since this book is not over-simplifying things - the author makes an effort explaining all the subtilities of golf.

5 out of 5 stars Long Over Due.......2007-06-01

The brilliance of this book is in the fact that it uses pictures to explain the golf swing. As humans we think in pictures anyway and is why words alone are often a waste of time. Bradely also uses words along with the pictures but this only adds to the power those pictures have to emblazen the proper feel into the golf swing. Telling someone to feel that they have a nail driven through both hands to create a great grip is not as lasting as seeing the actual picture.

THANK YOU NICK BRADLEY - WHAT A GREAT BOOK! THE CLEAR TEXT SUPPORTED BY EXCELLENT ILLUSTRATIONS ESTABLISHES A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF THE VARIOUS ELEMENTS OF THE GOLF SWING AND HOW TO IDENTIFY AND RECTIFY FAULTS. WITH A LOT OF STUDY, EXPERIMENTATION AND PRACTICE I AM WELL ON THE WAY TO DEVELOPING A LOW MAINTENANCE GOLF SWING.

The first cave of time was a breakthrough. This time around, Edward Packard as writer and Don Hedin as illustrator pulled toghether and perfected the ultimate CYOA book. It's wild to conceive that the original survivor would return to the cave once more knowing that he could very well lose his life, but that's what the appeal is all about. There is a strong sense of adventure in these pages and definitely deserves to be back in print.

                        4 out of 5 stars fun.......1999-12-14

Return to the cave of time is fun because I like how I get to choose whatever I would do in real life instead of going along with the character in the book. I also like how the author writes with excitement and scariness at the same time. I would recommend it for starting readers.

4 out of 5 stars Another great Choose Your Own Adventure.......1999-04-16

Another great sequel to that mysterious cave of time. This is a great book. Any "choose your own adventure" lover should read it (if its available) It shouldn't be out of print!

This one is better than the original "Cave of Time," which kicked off this fascinating series. Packard is the best of the series authors, and by this time he has it down to a science.
