Book Description
"Nonheterosexuals face an enormous amount of hostility and discrimination from many heterosexuals in the workplace and in society as a whole. This excellent book educates the reader about how individuals' sexual orientation may affect both how well they are accepted by their coworkers, and how they react to coworkers. It is useful in courses or training programs on diversity in general or on this particular topic. It also may be used by individuals outside of courses who simply want to learn more about sexual orientation as a workplace issue and about themselves. Amy J. Zuckerman and George F. Simons's book is definitely the best book on the topic." --Gary N. Powell, Department of Management, University of Connecticut Sexual orientation is one of the most controversial and difficult issues to deal with in the workplace today. Sexual Orientation in the Workplace is a dynamic workbook that provides an efficient guide to assist organizations in making the workplace a positive environment for workers of all sexual orientations. This volume contains a variety of simple tools and exercises that will effectively equip the reader with the necessary skills for working realistically and effectively with diverse colleagues. While looking at who makes up today's workforce with regard to sexual orientation, the authors examine facts about lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and heterosexuals, and discuss how leaders, groups, and organizations can encourage everyone to do their part to create a positive climate with policies that support everyone.

Sticks in your head for years.......2006-01-23
I'm biased, because I'm from Gays Mills, WI (I used to mow Leita Slayton's lawn!) - but I recently re-read it, and was surprised at how many of the anecdotes and images I remembered were actually from The Land Remembers, and not from Steinbeck or anyone else better-known. Parts of this book will stay with you for years and years. It's like going home again every time I pick it up.
One of my all time favorites.......2001-08-28
This is one of those books I will always remember. My children were young when I read it and I felt that it contained many lessons on how to be a good parent. And all in the context of very enjoyable reading. The story about learning to use the horse drawn cultivator shows how a parents help their child develop self-confidence, which is something I see so many people lacking. I can't say enough good things about this gem of a book.
One of my favorites!.......2000-01-27
This book is full of humor and spends wonderful time on how a farm is run, explaining the land, the chores, the wonder of living on a farm. Ben's antics with his brothers are delightful, and his account of his evenings with his family are memorable. I read this anytime I need a lift, and share its richness with anyone who will listen.
A time capsule of growing up on a farm........2000-01-16
One room school house, the changing of the seasons and the farm chores for each one...a memior of one man's boyhood experiences. I liked this book and my husband liked it even more than I did. He was born and raised in rural WI, picking rocks, milking, and going sledding with his brothers. This book is well written and reads like a time capsule...the people & chores on a family farm. I would have given it a perfect 5 stars, but there is too much about bees. Less bee watching and the author would have a classic here. Great that his story goes full circle. We learn what happens to the people we've read and cared about...which is always gratifying to us readers.
Hard to put the book down!.......1998-10-18
After finishing this book, I added Gays Mill, WI to my list of places to visit. I could hardly put the book down once I got into it. The stories that Logan tells are thought provoking...some brought tears to my eyes while others filled me with laughter. All will warm your heart! Having grown up on a farm, I could relate to the events that happened as Logan was going up. Although we are years apart in age, there are some aspects of growing up on a farm that all can relate to.

Book Description
Nature Across Cultures: Views of Nature and the Environment in Non-Western Cultures consists of about 25 essays dealing with the environmental knowledge and beliefs of cultures outside of the United States and Europe. In addition to articles surveying Islamic, Chinese, Native American, Aboriginal Australian, Indian, Thai, and Andean views of nature and the environment, among others, the book includes essays on Environmentalism and Images of the Other, Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Worldviews and Ecology, Rethinking the Western/non-Western Divide, and Landscape, Nature, and Culture. The essays address the connections between nature and culture and relate the environmental practices to the cultures which produced them. Each essay contains an extensive bibliography. Because the geographic range is global, the book fills a gap in both environmental history and in cultural studies. It should find a place on the bookshelves of advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and scholars, as well as in libraries serving those groups.

Customer Reviews:
Clinton Anderson.......2007-10-06
Very thourough step by step book on how to get control and respect of a young or old horse. Great illustrations and easy to read format.
Great information for training horses.......2007-06-27
I have four horses and one of them has some attitude problems. I would have liked to purchase Clinton Anderson's videos, but they're pretty expensive, so I bought this book. It's great and has given me many good ideas for working with my problem horse. It's principles, of course, apply to any horse and this book is a great read for any horse owner.
This book deserves 10 stars.......2007-06-26
This book is so well written, easy to use, easy to understand and easy to follow. The exercises are clear and thoroughly expained with pictures that show the correct technique. There are descriptions of what the horse may try to avoid the exercise as well as what humans may do wrong when performing the exercises; solutions are included on how to fix these problems. This book was well thought out, both in terms of how to train your horse and how to train the rider. My problem horse (a biter with an attitude and an attention span of about 5 nanoseconds) is responding excellently to this program. I purchased Pat Parelli's book and gave up on the book after trying the 1st few exercises (my horse kept trying to bite me). I am thrilled with Clinton's book and am finally enjoying the companionship of my horse. I wish I had done this sooner.
It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This.......2007-06-02
After the Lyons and Parelli prototypes in the world of horse-whispering, along comes Clinton Anderson whose amazing talent intrigues me. I've owned, bred, raised, and trained horses for 64 years and this young man has a lot to teach anyone. I can certainly recommend either his books, seminars, DVDs or all of the above.
Excellent book for ground manners.......2007-06-01
There are wonderful, easy to follow, step-by-step instructions for every excercise in this book. I really love the personal remarks made by the two 'students' who were chosen to be a part of this project. Highly recommend!

A well of information, but none too deep........2007-09-16
Agreed, this is a top notch book if you want to know what "the "Bedu" life was like sixty years ago in what is now Saudi Arabia. In that respect, I'm in complete concurrence with the other glowing reviews. But, as another reviewer has brought up, there's something missing here: Thesiger. Having read this book, I feel I know much more about camels, Bedu culture and desert travel. I even feel I know and like Thesiger's Bedu companions very well. But Thesiger himself? A bit of a mystery.
Yes, Thesiger mentions his dislike of machines and modern society. But, I don't really get a "feel" for what he's all about here. I suppose his perspective as presented here could best be denominated Stoic (although another reviewer speculates masochism may play a part). But, even then, Thesiger is no Marcus Aurelius, and any meditations or introspection are scant as the desert brush. -Can any reader imagine Thesiger meditating like M.A. on such questions as, "What is life but a warfare and a stranger's sojourn?" - Reflections, or at least the disclosing of them, are simply not his gulp of brackish well water.
Others are obviously quite content with a narrator about whose inner life they know next to nothing. But I was left after reading this book with a listless, arid feeling, with any sense of "INNER cosmography" (to borrow from Thoreau) remaining unmapped.
Not for me.......2007-09-15
I give it 3 stars for being interesting, for being exotic enough to draw me in for 100 pages, and for the author's clear descriptive writing. It would get more stars if it had developed any kind of a plot in those 100 pages -- I did not go further.
I did, though, learn how to make a camel lower it's milk. That little lesson alone was worth the time (I won't be doing THAT any time soon... I won't say how this feat is accomplished, but let me say that a Bedu who does this must want that milk badly).
Really, it is like a travelog in that it takes you along with him on desert journeys. Not too much adventure here, though, in the first 100 pp.
Times forgotten.......2007-09-07
Great story. They write movies about people like this and still don't do them justice. The book certainly gives us the sense of what it would be like to walk in the shoes of an adventurer traveling through the sands of the Middle East. On the backs of camels no less. Wow!
Couldn't Put it Down.......2007-07-29
This is simply a wonderful book. I actually found myself wishing I could go back in time and travel with Thesiger. This really is one of those books you will not want to put down. It is a great adventure and gives great insight to a time and way of life that is gone forever. Thesiger is definitely one of the great adventurer-travelers of all time. Thankfully, he had the writing skills to put it all down on paper.
Arabian Sands.......2007-01-18
A rare look at the empty qaurter of Arabia by a seasoned adventurer who obviously loved his subject both place and people. His assesment of Arab honor and harsh Bedu life give great insight on the Mideast today. One becomes attracted to the silence and vastness of the unknown deserts of the world.

Book Description
A Desert of Broken Dreams...
In the ENDLESS SANDS myth comes alive, and darkness is a salvation from an eternally scorching sun. Against that lie the dangers of a desert land filled with religious strife and political turmoil. Cities are the only shelter against the empty desert, and water equals power.
Ree Soesbee's utterly original fictional culture of the Endless Sands draws on a combination of ancient Morocco, Middle-Eastern Persia and Antioch, and the lands of mystery outlines in the ancient tales of the Badiya people. Cities are dominated by the strong, and the weak must do whatever they can in order to survive. It is a harsh world, but if you can master it, it can be paradise.

An interesting view of a curious land........2005-03-28
As a frequent visitor to the Middle East, I have made it my business to learn something about the various countries, the peoples and their customs in addition to the local flora and fauna. Of course, my main interest is the underwater world in general and it's many outstanding shipwrecks in particular. Whilst there is plenty of published material about both the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea, finding other information - that is both accurate and up-to-date, is not always easy.
In this book, the author skilfully avoids the conflicts which have beset the region for the past 100 years or more and concentrates on the ecology. Portraying the haunting deserts with their unique flora and curious creatures alongside mountains bedecked with juniper and inhabited by even more curious - and often dangerous, creatures, this author has done an excellent job of bringing the various habitats to life.
With the inclusion of chapters on both the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf, this is as complete a work on the subject as one would hope to find and is also a most interesting read.

Cool!.......2005-07-24
In this fantastic book, the Baby Sitters are all going to USA. Including Abby Stevenson, the alternate officer.
This was good except for Dawn's Dad.......2005-04-26
This book was great (except that it had MA and Kristy in it. Kristy and Mary Anne are concieted and crybabys). I just didn't like that Dawn's father tore down Richard (MA's father) and her grandmother. That was extremely unfair.
A Good Book.......2004-04-30
I really liked this book. It might have a been a tad bit unrealistic, but that's why it's fiction! The thing I liked best about this book is that Kristy sees someone very surprising at a ball game. (I won't spoil it for you.) Also, I thought Abby's scene at the Grand Canyon was very touching. One thing I didn't like about this book is that in Chapter Three, Jessi thinks Mallory is racist. HER BEST FRIEND! Oh, well. I never liked Jessi too much anyway. (Sorry.) And I'm so glad that Karen got to narrate a chapter in here. I may have outgrown the Baby-sitters Little Sister books, but I still like Karen. So, this was a pretty great book.
My Favorite Book as a Child.......2004-01-25
When I was young I used to love the Baby Sitters Club I read every book that I could get my hands on but Super Special #14 was by far my favorite because it was longer and it dealt with what the charactors were feeling more than the other books. Even at a young age these books really seemed to speak to me on a personal level I felt as though I knew these girls like they lived across the street or down the road that is how well you get to know these girls. Also it is not as though they never fight I mean the have arguements and get upset at each other but it always seems to work out for the better in the long run. I would recommend this to children everywhere there is zero language and this is just about friends becoming closer to each other. I hope that this review has helped you in making a decision about this book it is really good.
A really great book!.......2003-08-04
This is one of the best Baby-sitters Club Super Specials. Here's what happens:
Dawn's dad decides to take her and brother, Jeff, on a cross-country RV trip. Watson (Kristy's stepdad) decides that that is cool, so he rents an RV. Both dads say that they'll let any members of the Baby-sitters Club that want to come along, come along.
Watson's RV goes south, and Mr. Schafer's goes north. They both end up in California at Dawn's house. Here's their destinations:
Kristy- all the major baseball parks
Mary Anne- to visit her grandma (sees her at Mall of America)
Claudia- a museum
Stacey- to see Ethan in Seattle
Dawn- a ghost town
Mallory- Chinocteague
Jessi- to see her grandparents
Abby- Graceland
Like I said, this is a really great book!
