Good science writing on Orangutans.......2002-05-09

Not taking anything away from Birute Galdikas who has been studying Orangutans longer than Anne Russon, but this book is different than Galdikas' two books, and as a scientific overview of these great apes it is hard to beat. Galdikas' REFLECTIONS OF EDEN mixed natural history with memoir, and ORANGUTAN ODYSSEY is slim - less text and more photographs - and serves as a good coffee-table book.

Russon worked with ex-captive and former pet Orangs who were stationed at a rehabilitation center learning how to be "wild". Her descriptions of their behavior is fascinating. They have extended childhoods, and in the wild they would spend this time with their mothers learning by imitation. In captivity their learning ability has been transfered into a fondness for using human tools. The incredible imitative skills of Orangs was a revelation for Russon. This is something that primatologists have stressed as significant about all the great apes. Galdikas recognizes this as a challenge in reintroducing apes to the wild. Frans de Waal goes further and has done studies on how such "human imprinting" has impinged on the animal's "culture".

Russon only provides an introduction to such topics as animal intelligence and whether or not they have a culture. Her examples of Orang learning and imitative behavior make for a thoroughly interesting read and may encourage readers to further explore the subject. I therefore highly recommend this well written book.

Inlook on animal psychology.......2000-04-02

Interesting and funny look at the behavior of the endangered species of orangutans. This book describes the experience of Russon and her colleagues' work in transitioning abused and pet orangutans back to living in a natural environment. Orangutans are visibly very cunning animals, which have managed to trick the researchers in this national park more than once. Russan recounts her experience with an orangutan that insisted on washing clothes, and describes stories of them raiding secured guard posts and untying canoes and taking them up and down the river.

I recommend this book to anyone who has interests in psychology, especially that of animals and people with pets.

on the surface, the book gives nice illustrations of general knots. the diagrams are clear cut and tying steps seem easy until you actually do it. i've only tried the snell knot so far, which is a basic knot when it comes to fishing. i followed the directions for over four hours and i still cannot get the knot right. call me stupid. i went to google and searched for snell knot tying tips. voila, i got the darn knot under 5 minutes following the google recipe. i cannot comment on the other knot pages since i haven't tried, but having trouble on a basic knot leaves a bad taste already. the upshot is that at least this book gives me new keywords to search for on the internet. i know this is just one bad review but it's surely an honest one.

Mostly Practical Knots.......2006-01-08

I enjoy this book. It is well written and generally well illustrated. The book would have been improved by a more careful edit before publication. There seem to be a few illustrations that are misplaced or mis-labeled. Still, I have been able to master a variety of knots that I now use regularly.

Easily the best book on fishing knots.......2002-11-01

I've looked through all the other books on knots (and/or fishing knots), and even own some of them. This book is the hands-down winner. First, it has ALL the knots. Second, it's very specific about how to tie them, including how many wraps for different situations, and which side the tag end should come through, etc. The only problem with the book is that it can be a little hard for a beginner to figure out what basic set of knots s/he needs for a particular type of fishing (e.g., fly fishing). Although the book makes an effort at this, their suggestions don't jibe with what I've learned in the field and are a bit too complicated.

This book gives the answers to the questions that most authors forget to give. I enjoyed reading and using the ideals that where in the book.

This is a must-have reference for the fisherman........1998-03-16

This book is one of the best sources for fishing knots, and knot tying, that you can find. The organization is such that you can find quickly several knot options for the task in mind, clear text that explains strengths and weaknesses of each knot and its use, and excellent diagrams that, with a little practice, make the knot yours. I give this book a 9 only because there are a few knots, and short-cut methods of tying them, such as the Turrel (sometimes called Turtle) knot, which are not included. If they were, then this near-ten would be an eleven. This book not only belongs on your book shelf, it needs to be in your tackle box.

I taught myself to tie fishing knots by following the guides published in the back of the tide books that are given away by every gas station and sporting goods store on the coast. I hopped that this book would allow me to learn some more specialized knots. But when I sat down and started tying the knots I found the instructions hard to follow, with too few steps shown. One knot I tried could not be tied following the instructions and diagrams. I also found most descriptions of what the knot was designed for un-helpful.
You are better off with the tide book.

Quirky characters and a happy ending.......2005-11-27

Something seems not quite right about the main character in this book, who tells you almost right off the bat he has a secret. Is it his straightforward tone? His gullible demeanor? His sensitivity? When Will's guitar playing is driving his mother's lover crazy so Mom dumps son Will off to live in some sort of rooming house with two other men who make him look normal - Rocko, a vegetable obsessed painter who may be autistic, and James, who seems immature and sex-crazed. A woman named Chrissy finds them jobs and seems to be responsible for keeping their lives in order. When Will falls in love with a gypsy girl, he discovers that love means honesty and sharing, but can Zara live with the secret he can't bear to tell?

The quirky characters are beautifully presented here. Although the reader senses something is a bit off, it turns out that these broken people are actually quite ordinary and have the same wants and needs as anybody else. "We're all nuts, aren't we? Just different kinds of nuts," says James at the end. And this epiphany makes the chaos of the first 200 pages completely believable, from the hats to the pick mucking to the birthday party to a cat names Fuzzydude. Yep - all that, and a happy ending. Not a necessary purchase, but this is one of those books that will increase the scope and breadth of your collection.

a quirky, fun read.......2004-05-18

NAKED WITHOUT A HAT is a coming-of-age story told in first person by the main character, Will Avery. Will must learn to assert himself with his mother and gain his independence. When he moves into a flat with Chrissy, James and Rocko, Will is well on his way to starting a new life for himself. Chrissy helps him get a new job at a park where he meets Zara, a gypsy girl whose family is camping illegally there. A romance soon blossoms between Will and Zara.

Will enjoys his first opportunity to live away from his mother. He makes new friends and earns the respect of his boss. Just when his life seems to be getting on track, his mother threatens to reveal their family "secret." Will's relationship with Zara is compromised. Will their love be strong enough to survive the truth? You will have to read NAKED WITHOUT A HAT to find out.

Ultimately, this story deals with prejudice of one kind or another. Almost everyone in the story has something to hide. When Will's secret is revealed at the end of the novel, the reader will see the narrative in a new light.

With a cast of quirky characters and an original plot, NAKED WITHOUT A HAT is a fun read for teens.
