Book Description

In this bok you will learn how to lay out the context of the problem carefully; remain extremely sensitive to the emotions clients attach to their retirement assets; follow clients when they lead you off the track to other planning areas that concern them; lead clients to those other areas when they don't make their own connections; and, master all the technical information to get clients through the retirement maze successfully.

When you master these steps, you will undoubtedly deepen the value clients perceive in your advice and expand your range of influence in their decision-making. The bottom line for advisors is that stepping up to this problem proactively and thoroughly will not only solve the problems but will make you the advisor the clients depend on first. That is the real intention of the book--not only to address the technical aspects of tax law and planning strategies but also to focus on how to communicate the full impact of the problem and the value of the solutions to the client.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 2000- Planning for Retirement Distributions.......2000-04-01

This is a great reference book for anyone who gives financial planning advice to clients. The authors detail the best ways in which to set up, and make changes to IRAs, in order to get the best result for the IRA owner and beneficiaries.

A lot of real world experience is evident from the author's explanations of the methods recommended for use in dealing with individuals and families, and their retirement planning. Technical issues are dealt with comprehensively as well as the human element, which is often overlooked in a technical publication.

How IRA money is best used in estate planning is covered in detail. For estate planning the authors also give a very detailed explanation of how life insurance can be used to pay estate taxes, leaving the bulk of a large estate intact. The chapter goes into great detail about the life insurance industry, types of policies and the pros and cons of life insuranace illustations.

      Book Description

This is an encyclopedic, two-part introduction to the edible plants of China. Part I introduces the cultural aspects of Chinese food plants and the spread Chinese culinary culture to the outside world. It also describes how botanical and cultural information was acquired, which plants have been selected by the Chinese people for food, how these foodstuffs are produced, preserved, and prepared, and what lessons can be learned from Chinese practices. Part II provides the botanical identification of the plant kingdom for the esculents used in China as food and/or for beverage. The plants are illustrated with line drawings or composite photographs.

5 out of 5 stars Great new reference work.......2005-09-22

If the average fine book gets five stars, this should get at least 50. Many of us have been waiting for decades, with little hope, for a real ethnobotany of China. This book fulfills our dreams, at least as far as food plants go--and Dr. Hu has already done a book on medical plants. The present book gives botanical accounts of hundreds of plants, many of them obscure--in fact, many are here reported as food plants for the first time. It also gives brief accounts of uses, and of major varieties of cultivated plants. Hu also gives a long section on bupin--supplements, plants with tonic and strengthening action in traditional Chinese medicine. This study alone could be a blockbuster book in its own right. Bupin plants were almost unknown before in the English-language literature, except for references--cryptic to the nonexpert, and botanically unsatisfying to the expert--in Chinese herbal medicine books.
The book gives dozens of excellent recipes, mostly for using the bupin. I can testify that they are authentic and well done. Some of the results taste like medicine, but most are wonderful teas or soups.
Even this book cannot give all the food plants of China! I am aware of several more, most (but not all) obscure frontier items. However, this book covers everything of much significance.
Mistakes are few, except for typos, of which there are far too many for a major university press (shame on Harvard). The only substantive mistake that will confuse anyone is the use of the terms "Chinese gin" or "rice gin" to refer to "jiou," Chinese alcoholic drinks. Gin is grain neutral spirits flavored with juniper, and does not exist in China except as an expensive import from the western world. Jiou can be "Chinese wine" (technically a still ale made from grain--rice or millets-- with various inoculants) or distilled liquor, known by such terms as maotai and sanshu, and technically a whiskey or vodka--it is usually made from sorghum, millet, or sweet potatoes. So we are left not knowing what sort of liquor Hu means. All we know is that it isn't gin. (In most of the bupin cases I've run into personally, it's distilled grain alcohol, basically a sort of whiskey.) When you make the recipes in the book, be sure to use Chinese "wine" when she says "sherry" and Chinese distilled jiou (maotai or the like) when she says "gin."
Everyone interested seriously in Chinese food or botany needs this book.

        Book Description

This study covers the latent demand outlook for canned meats made in slaughtering plants excluding food for dogs, cats, and babies across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as “regions”). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of “economic population”, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this “economic” definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city’s marketing and distribution value vis-à-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for canned meats made in slaughtering plants excluding food for dogs, cats, and babies. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

                          Book Description

In Volume 2, over 50 contributors exhaustively describe and classify the ferns, fern allies, and gymnosperms of North America. Covering over two dozen fern and half a dozen gymnosperm families, they survey fern species of both ecological and horticultural importance and review such gymnosperm taxa as the conifers--the dominant trees in many forests as well as important timber plants--and cycads, which display significant evolutionary features. In all, the volume assembles 509 species of ferns and fern allies and infraspecific taxa in 70 genera. The editors have revised nearly 80 of these taxa to reflect classification changes since publication of the last standard work on ferns in North America. The gymnosperm treatments encompass 118 species in 22 genera. Identification keys, summaries of habitats and geographic ranges, pertinent synonymies, descriptions, chromosome numbers, and all other significant details are provided. More than 600 distribution maps and 65 illustration plates appear throughout.

                          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A variable book with some very good and other poor parts.......1998-11-20

This review is only about the conifers section of the Flora. Coverage of the conifers is complete for North American species, with a few naturalised exotics as well, but by no means all of these, e.g. Pinus halepensis naturalised in California is not in. The classification follows the most recent evidence, including the submergence of Taxodiaceae in Cupressaceae for which acceptance is becoming wider. Each genus has been authored separately, and inevitably the content varies according to the author. Some are very good, while others, notably Pinus, are much poorer.

Abies, compiled by R S Hunt, a long-time authority on silver firs, is the only genus in which readers might find any unfamiliar names. Hunt has found distinct differences between coastal and inland populations of Abies lasiocarpa, and separates the inland ones as a distinct species Abies bifolia. Also split off is the Sierra Nevada White Fir, usually treated as a variety of the Colorado White Fir but here a species Abies lowiana. He demonstrates good grounds for treating them as more than varieties; in other parts of the world they might have been treated as subspecies, but this rank appears to have been actively discouraged by the editors of the Flora.

Tsuga and Picea are both by R J Taylor, who like Hunt is an acknowledged authority on his genera, and both are covered well. Inevitably, there are a few small errors in some of the measurements: Picea sitchensis is given a maximum height of 80m, though it is known to grow to 96m, while Picea engelmannii is given 60m, though the tallest I can find published data for is 55m.

Pinus receives the poorest treatment of any of the genera. It is by R Kral, an unfamiliar name in conifer taxonomic circles who has no work cited in Farjon's 1990 Bibliography of Conifers. Kral corsorily dismisses or does not even mention several well-founded taxa, notably among the pinyons. He also does not appear to understand the tenet in the International Code for Botanical Nomenclature that subspecies is a higher rank than variety, as he gives the large differences in Pinus contorta recognition only at varietal rank, while giving the very small differences between the two populations of Pinus torreyana subspecies rank. Had this genus been covered by almost any other American pine specialist - e.g. Lanner, Malusa or Haller - a much better account would have resulted

Distribution maps are given for all species, but are very small and not too clear for species with small ranges like Cupressus macrocarpa; for these, just the state or province where it occurs should have been shown, not the whole continent.

Keys are given for all genera with more than two taxa. Like the texts they vary, some are easy to use with that for Picea the best among the larger genera. The key for Pinus includes (lead 28) the inexcusable cop-out "pines of eastern North America / pines of Western North America". This makes it unusable not only for anyone dealing with cultivated or naturalised plants, but also anywhere where trees might possibly be planted or naturalised - thus including all managed forests, in effect all trees outside of National Parks and nature reserves and perhaps even some in these. Some of the keys also seem to assume that you carry a powerful microscope and portable laboratory wherever you go, citing differences in resin canal position or pollen size, though these are usually only as supplementary features.

The editing and proof-reading has been done well, and it is refreshing to see an American text using international metric measurements, not archaic feet and inches. It is also very pleasantly free of misprints and other such errors. The only one I found is the vernacular name for Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris), mis-spelled 'Scotch', thereby making it a whisky, not a tree!

During the professional cycling season, the members of the United States Postal Team live, train, and work together for weeks on end while traveling to competitions throughout Europe. With wit and singular insight, Michael Barry, a professional cyclist and member of the United States Postal Team, shares his first-hand knowledge of the sport and of his fellow cyclists, describing intricate pre-race orchestrations; the efforts of the coach, mechanics, team chef, and other staff members; the personalities and idiosyncrasies of his international teammates, including six-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong; and the thrilling races themselves.

2 out of 5 stars Dry and flavorless.......2007-03-20

I, too, am pure tifosi and really, really wanted to enjoy this. I remember my own racing days and can talk for hours on end, telling story after story: "Remember that time when..."

Michael Barry either cannot or chooses not to.

There's a pretty good description of the malaise experienced by a professional cyclist mired in a 3-week tour at the end of the book. There are momentary bright spots and little tidbits of trivia that may bring a smile. Unfortunately, the majority of the book is taken up with a spectator's view of Lance Armstrong. Mr. Barry drags us through the 2004 Tour de France from the comfort of his television set; he wasn't on the team that competed that year. And this is the core of the book.

Overall, the book has SO much potential, but Mr. Barry cannot bring it to fruition. Bike racing is fun and funny, and full of wonderful stories. This book is not. It is as dull and subdued as the colors of the racing team it follows.

                                      Meh.

3 out of 5 stars Not A Lance Book Alone.......2006-07-09

                                      Okay...it's more like a 3.5 star book.

First and foremost, the fact that a professional European cyclist can write a book that is easily read is a miracle. Actually if you go to his Michael Barry's website, you can tell that he is quite intelligent.

This book actually is a very good read. One sees the day to day detail of what a procyclist is like. I particularly enjoyed the episodes that had really nothing to do with racing, but just life in general on the team. Julien DeVriese's love for the Lakers, Luc Verloo, the bus driver, being dragged by a car in the middle of the night, Roberto Heras sitting on the toilet in his pajamas drinking coffee so he wouldn't wake Barry. These are what really makes the book.

The reason I gave it only 3.5 stars is that it is at times dry. And the end tends to drag on...maybe it's like the cycling season at the end of the year. That along with the fact that if you are not into cycling, this may not be a very inspiring book, especially if one was anticipating tons of Lance stories. I enjoyed it as I am a cycling enthusiast...

                                      Yep...3.5 stars...good book...just not great.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Account of Life In and Out of the US Postal Bus.......2006-03-11

Forget about all the negative reviews about this book!!! They are completely wrong. I can't believe those people didn't get more out of this book. First, it's called "Inside the Postal Bus". Sure it has Lance in the SUB-title, but that doesn't mean this book is "all about Lance". If that's what they wanted, they obviously can't read a title let alone a sub-title, and they should stick to books that have a hugh pictures of Lance on the cover so they don't get so confussed.

For TRUE cycling fans (and NOT the-Lance-bandwagon crew) this is one great cycling book. Michael Barry does give plenty (yes plenty) of accounts of what went on in the US Postal bus. He also gives accounts of stays in hotels, in European cities that are hubs for non-European born cyclist, and plenty of road racing. A real insider's view.

O.k., Barry didn't race in the Tour de France alongside Lance, but the title doesn't say he did. A true fan would know that there is life outside of the Tour de France and the US Postal Team has more than one rider. And such a fan would also want to know about other races and riders.

Barry gives plenty of stories about other riders (George Hincapie, Floyd Landis, Dave Zabriskie, and plenty more) and also US Postal Team staff. Great stories-and well told. This is an easy to read, enjoyable book about life in and out of the US Postal bus, the glory, the pain, and the triumphs of wins both big and small. I'm glad I happened to catch Michael Barry signing copies of his book at the final stage of the inagural Tour of California.

4 out of 5 stars A great informal look Inside the Postal Bus........2006-02-28

I truly enjoyed the way Michael Barry delivered the 'inside scoop' on what goes on inside and outside the Postal bus before, during, and after race events. The personal sacrifices these riders make in order to be a part of a professional race team were brought forth in an amusing and heart felt way.

3 out of 5 stars Nice Read for a Cyclist - But Barry Wasn't on the Bus with Lance in France.......2006-01-17

The title of this book is a little misleading for cycling fans. Like other reviewers, I really wanted to like this book. However, it just doesn't come through with the goods.

Like most riders/fans who look for good books on cycling, I eagerly looked forward to Michael Barry's take on life in the pro ranks. Barry is, of course, a world-class rider with world-class experience riding for the phenomenal Postal and Discovery bike teams. I expected Barry to come through with some fascinating insider scoop on life in the Postal bus. While Michael certainly shares some interesting anecdotes, like the importance of the expresso machine on board, I'd be less than truthful if I didn't give the reader a heads-up - this book isn't so much about Michael Barry as about Lance and the Postal efforts to win the 2004 Tour de France. To me that smacks of hopping on the Lance bandwagon in order to make some extra cash. There are plenty of books about Lance - we want to hear about the rest of the team. George Hincapie, Floyd Landis, etc. are great riders as well - tell us what they are like!

Make no mistake - this book is pretty much a collection of Barry's diary entries already published on [...], fleshed out with the aforementioned accounts of Lance and the Postal boys. (In case it sounds like I'm griping - let me point out that Barry recounts the Tour de France in quite a few chapters but didn't actually ride the 2004 Tour). There is no problem with Barry's writing - he does a nice job of capturing the atmosphere surrounding bike racing. However, whoever edited this book forgot to point out to Barry that it might be nice to have a logical transition between chapters instead of the haphazard manner in which each chapter fits together.

Basically, the book follows the US Postal Cycling Team through the 2004 season. The first few chapters were exactly what I had hoped for - background on Michael Barry, details on what the Postal Bus was(!) really like, and interesting notes on Michael's teammates. Yes, the detail was a little sparse, but there were interesting anecdotes here and there. About a third of the way in to the book we get a blow-by-blow description of Lance's heroic win in the 2004 Tour de France... There's only one problem - Barry wasn't actually on the Postal bus or team during the 2004 Tour. I wanted to read about Michael's experience - not Lance's (there are plenty of books detailing Lance's heroic antics during the Tour(s) elsewhere).

I wanted to hear what Barry does and sees on the team, not what Lance did (I've already read all that on [...]! Bottom line - this book is nothing more than a poorly edited collection of Michael Barry's Rider Diary submissions that you can read for free at [...]. I put the book down wondering if Michael didn't see this as a way to supplement his team salary for the year. Its a shame because you can see some real promise in Michael's writing. If he had stuck to writing about himself and his own experiences on the "B" team, I think it would have been a great read. 5 out of 5 stars Excellent story .......2006-06-27

With the state of our communities being what they are, this is an excellent story that teaches some old time values, which are much needed in today's society. I can tell by the reviews of some of the kids that they fail to grasp what is important about this story. Immediately fell in love with "The Old Man" because he reminded me so much of my own grandfather and a time long gone. This story teaches values and self worth and mainly how to find pride in one's self and how to be a man. This story teaches what a lot of today's students are missing: Respect for elders and self, and there is no shame in good clean honest pay for good clean honest work. Children must step up to the plate and read between the lines, this story is set in the late 70s, but the lessons still apply.

5 out of 5 stars The runaway witness.......2005-03-02

Leroy had an incident with his friends who were in the gang. The gang killed an old lady by the name of Mrs. Carson. The police went to Leroys job at the Cafeteria to ask questions. The gang later broke into his house and told him not to tell the police. Leroy's mom decided to send him to his grandfathers house. There his gandfather taught him how to fish, work the route, use a CB radio, and drive the truck. He also met officer Greenhaw. Officer Greenhaw was the police who helped Leroy solve his problems. While he was in New Orleans he met his dad for the first time in 8 or 9 years. He was upset with his dad and his dad made him and offer to come live with him. Leroy's dad lived in New York City with another woman and an apartment.Leroy's dad
knew he was in trouble and wanted to help. Leroy said no, to his father's offer. His grandfather took Leroy to the store and bought Leroy a suit for the trial. Leroy went back to Chicago as a material witness.

I would recommend this book because it tells others what to do if they are ever in a incident like this one. It also helps people deal with their dad or mom if they have not seen him in a long time. My favorite part of the book is when Leroy learned how to drive a car and use the CB radio. - Brian K.

In this book Leroy is a witness to a murder while he was getting off the elevator in the Hoover Housing Project. He decided to go and live with his grandpa. While he was with his grandfather, his grandfather taught him how to work as a fisherman and how to run the route. He also let him taste real New Orleans food. While he was there he met sheriff Greenhaw and had to go back to Chicago to be a witness. I would recommend this book because it was half way interesting. - Chris C.

1 out of 5 stars Witness and Killer.......2003-10-07

What would you do when a murderer comes to your apartment and sees you see the murder that he just committed? Well, a17 year old boy was asking himself that very question when he came up the elevator and the doors opened. Shortly after Le Roy saw the murder he was sent to live with his grandpa. There he learned to be a fisherman, drive a car and work the fish delivery route his grandpa ran every day. After a while the police from Chicago had tracked down Le Roy. After that he was interrogated and called into the courts as a material witness.
I would not recommend this book because all it talks about was fishing and the murder. The story had a weak plot. The only people that I would recommend this book to is to someone that wants to fall asleep every time you start to read. It was very boring and I would not recommend it at all.

4 out of 5 stars Shrimper or Runner?.......2001-11-26

Leroy saw a gang mugging an old woman. The police came to Leroy's house. Leroy said he did not know anything. The gang threatens to cut him and they trashed his mom's house. Leroy ran away to his grandpa's house. There he learned to become a shrimper. Then the Chicago police came to have Leroy testify. In the end, Leroy's dad came to offer him a way out. Leroy's dad ran numbers for a living. He said that Leroy could come to New York and run numbers for him. Will Leroy take the way that his dad told him or will he go to Chicago to testify?
This book was O. K. It should have been longer. It seems the author did not finish the book before the story was finished.

I rate this book a four star book, I liked the book because Leroy witnessed a crime and he got to do something good for the community, so the gang couldn't do anything else to the city. If I could do something like that I would be scared but I probaly would still do something good for my community. I also liked that Leroy got to drive a truck.
