Save your money.......2007-03-28
I am brand new to Technical Recruiting after spending time as a military recruiter and I bought this book hoping it would better explain this brand new world of IT. My company knew of my shortcomings and said they would train me, but we have been so busy and my training has taken a backseat. I wanted to buy this book to start teaching myself so that I could contribute. This book talked nothing of the specific IT jobs nor did it explain anything about the SDLC. Basically, I was looking for Technical Recruiting 101 and thought the "The Complete Guide to Technical Recruiting" would be just what I needed. Sadly to say, this book just didn't measure up.
Does not deliver what it promises.......2001-01-01
I was disconcerted to find a very substandard book instead of what I had expected. I had ideas of receiving a really helpful book to make me a better technical recruiter, but I received a book of personal opinions and theoretical protocols that even I know better than to try, and I am pretty new at this. Luckily I had bought 3 books, and one of the others is outstanding. Don't bother with this one.
Lots of words, but says little.......2000-12-28
I sent this book back from whence it came. It was of no value to me. So full of typographical errors, poor writing, contradictions, and fantasies that I could not accept it as any help at all. Buy some other book, not this one.
Sadly, a waste of money.......2000-12-16
Far from being a complete guide, this book is a narrow, incomplete collection of old ideas and outdated techniques. If you tried any of this stuff, you would be lost in the dust. Also, it's so full of typos and poor grammar, it would not pass a simple English test.
An excellent guide to the technical recruiting process........2000-09-28
This book will give you some of the inside power tools that Charlie Dawson has learned to use in his successful career. His knowledge of the industry and how to make money in it as a recruiter is obvious as he lays out the tips and techniques he has found to be successful. I enjoyed the book.

Book Description
Judo has been a regular part of the Olympic Games since 1972 and is practiced in nearly every country throughout the world, but very few people know much about its founder, Jigoro Kano.
Kano was born in 1860 near the end of the Japanese feudal era, when the country was ruled by the samurai class. He grew up in a period of rapid modernization, as Japan, having thrown off its isolationist past, was struggling to overtake the leading countries of the industrialized West. A bright student, Kano had no difficulty with his studies, but he was bullied by older students because of his small size. When he learned that some of the traditional martial arts, particularly those known as jujutsu, enabled a smaller person to best a larger one, he decided to look for a teacher, overcoming his father's initial objection that a modern young man should not waste time on studying fighting arts from the feudal past.
Ignoring the unspoken rule that a student should practice just one martial art under one teacher, Kano sought out the best techniques from all the jujutsu schools. In the process, he became more than strong enough to defend himself, and soon he began to develop a following. In 1882, at age twenty-two, he founded the Kodokan school of judo, which was the beginning of the sport as we know it today.
Kano was more than a renowned practitioner of the martial arts. He graduated from the most prestigious university of the day, became at twenty-five a professor at a school for the scions of the Japanese aristocracy (and which he felt should be opened to commoners), and was later the principal of the Tokyo Teachers' Training College. In addition to his own private English school, he established a school for students from China. He served as chairman of the Japan Amateur Sports Association and was the first Asian to be elected to the International Olympic Committee.
In creating judo, Kano sought to provide a means of leading a more meaningful life, both physically and mentally. He himself exemplified that type of well-rounded life. His story, as narrated in The Father of Judo: A Biography of Jigoro Kano, is sure to inspire all present and future practitioners of judo.
Jigoro Kano was small as a child, which gave rise to his determination to study jujutsu. In his early twenties, he combined the best of what he had assimilated and founded modern judo. A professor at the age of twenty-five, he played an important educational role in transforming Japan from a country ruled by the samurai into a modern nation.
Customer Reviews:
Close, but..........2005-01-27
Available for 5 years now, one can still pick up a First Edition copy in most book stores. Mr. Watson does a fine job at basically presenting Kano Jigoro to a public that is especially starved of information about the man and his many accomplishments, on and off the mat.
However, from the perspective of good biography and as an historical work, it does not go nearly deep enough into Kano's life and, frustratingly so, can (and does) leave the reader with more questions than answers about this remarkable man's life.
That said, there is so very little that has been written about Kano that I grudgingly rate it at 4 stars. For this reason alone, I think it belongs on the library shelf of any self-respecting judoka. Mr. Watson, however, could have given this subject a much more extensive treatment.
A good start.......2001-09-02
For most judo students, this will provide an excellent introduction to the founder of judo. Prior to this, there was very little available on the life of Jigoro Kano and the majority of judo students only knew Kano from a question sure to be on the promotion test and perhaps a picture in the practice hall. I, for one, would like to see Brian Watson go back to his notes and provide us with a much more detailed tome.
Disappointing.......2001-02-16
The book provides some historical information on Kano's life but I was very disappointed. The book went through Kano's life very quickly and failed to cover large segments of his life. It provided good detail in some areas but was woefully lacking in other areas. Plus, the book was written on a very low level, practically at a child's level. In addition, it was obvious that the author did not have much to contribute because he filled the book at the end with tournament results. How this had anything to do with the subject is beyond me. It is a necessary book to have but I expected better.
Warm and Fuzzy.......2001-02-05
I was disappointed with the lack of scholarly research in this book. There are only six references listed, none of which are Kano's original writings. For someone as important in the modern Olympic movement as the author depicts Kano, there must be some of Kano's work extant. The author provides a large number of quotes and conversations, several from letters Kano wrote, but does not provide sources for this. Most of the conversations seem stilted and forced. I can't say I gained much insight into Kano's philosophy and the development of Kodokan judo.
Frustrating.......2001-01-16
This book is valuable for providing little-known information about an important figure. Unfortunately, it is written at about an eighth-grade level. Those who read history seriously will be frustrated by the book's superficiality. It is difficult to determine what is documented and what is contrived for readability. The author states up front that he has created dialogue to make the book more interesting, but there is no way to tell which dialogue is created. For example, were those really Kano's last words? On the other hand, the photographs are terrific, and a time-line of events (at the end of the book) is very helpful.
Book Description
This fully revised third edition of the popular guidebook explains how to climb the world's highest free-standing mountain. It covers the main trekking routes (Marangu, Machame and Rongai) and includes background information on geology, wildlife and habitats. The author gives practical advice on how to prevent and manage mountain sickness.

Grady Grennan is finding out that it's pretty hard to get over your mother's death when you hear her voice every time you switch on the radio. Besides being Grady's mom, Debbie Grennan was also a famous heavy-metal rock star. Since her drug overdose, Grady has tried to fill the hole she left in his life with everything from skateboarding to spending more time with his mentally disabled brother, Louie. But he can't quite seem to master the skateboard, and his time with Louie is often spoiled by the vicious arguments he has with Louie's stepmother, Vickie. Now the third anniversary of his mother's death is approaching, and Grady has been invited to a tribute concert in her honor. The concert weekend brings Grady's feelings to a head, and he must decide if he's going to be a real brother to Louie (and a part of Vickie's family) or remain just another long-haired slacker--the son of a dead rock star.
Through Grady's conflicted feelings for Louie, author Randy Powell successfully captures the struggle between selfishness and generosity that constantly rages in the teen psyche. "I can't imagine... not seeing Louie for a whole year. On the other hand, I can't imagine living in the same house with the guy, either." Grady's disagreements with Vickie over everything from music to religion crackle with a parent-child tension that teens will immediately find familiar and amusing. With the invention of Grady Grennan, Powell has given young adult literature a thoughtful new underdog--with the smart mouth of Rats Saw God's Steve York and the soul of The Outsiders's Ponyboy Curtis. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert
Book Description
Grady is skateboarding toward a major decision
No longer able to live with his grandmother, fifteen-year-old Grady Grennan has to find a new address. one option is to move in with his mentally disabled half brother, Louie, in Seattle. But that poses a problem: Louie's adoptive mother, Vickie, and Grady are about as compatible as Mozart and heavy metal.
Nevertheless, Grady's testing the waters. He's in Seattle for a concert tribute to his and Louie's mother, a grunge rock icon who died three years ago. Grady has been invited to speak at the tribute, but what is he supposed to say to thousands of adoring fans about a mother who abandoned her sons in favor of a musical career?
Both humorous and deeply moving, Tribute to Another Dead Rock Star poses challenging, provocative questions to all sorts of readers -- cynics, liberals, slackers, and rock stars included.
Customer Reviews:
Intertwined Family Problems.......2007-04-23
Three years ago, when he was twelve, Grady's mother died. She had been a rock singer in a very famous band and she died like a rock singer, in her car in the middle of the night, drunk, suffocated with her own vomit. Grady loved her and admires her music, but he isn't sure if he really even knew her. He didn't have a father; he was the result of a fling and his father died before he even found out Grady's mom was pregnant. So Grady spent most of his life living with his grandmother. Now she is remarried and she and her husband want to tour the United States for the next few years in an RV. That means Grady will need to find a place to live. He has a couple of options. He could go to school in Europe for awhile, or he might be able to move in with Mitch and Vickie and their family.
Mitch was Grady's mom's boyfriend for a few years, and they had a son together. Louie is three years younger than Grady and is mentally retarded. He adores Grady and Grady loves him, too, but Vickie, Mitch's wife and a very religious person, thinks that Grady is a bad influence on him. She and Grady are constantly clashing when he goes to visit. Plus, she and Mitch have three other young children together, which makes their house a little crowded.
Now Grady has gone to visit for the weekend, to be near Seattle, where there is going to be a tribute to his mother. A popular rock band influenced by her is putting on a concert, and Grady is getting the VIP treatment from them. But this weekend is difficult for him and for Vickie, who has very different ideas about what things are good for Louie.
I liked Grady's character. He is strong and in control, and he doesn't let things bother him much. He is also good to Louie, even though Louie wears him out. I also liked that Grady's mother is portrayed realistically, and her life isn't glamorized much. I didn't like Vickie and Mitch's family, though. Vickie's personality would be enough to drive anyone crazy. I also didn't like how Grady's grandmother was abandoning him in the middle of his teenage years. It seemed like she could have put her travel plans on hold for a couple more years to see him through high school.
Human side of the rock music scene.......2001-03-06
Many people would admire Grady, having a world-famous rock star for a mom. But when she dies of a drug overdose, Grady doesn't know where he belongs. His stepmother is very religious, and she and Grady fight all the time. Plus, he loves his mentally disabled brother Louie, but Louie also drives him crazy sometimes. I thought Grady was a great character, just like a real guy who missed his dead mother. I liked him and wanted everything to work out for him. It's too bad the book's cover is so"cartoony" that it doesn't give an accurate picture of how realistic the book is. I liked the look into the rock music scene and how that life can affect real people.
What if your parents were Janis Joplin or Kurt Cobain?.......2000-07-31
In the great recent tradition of jarringly real young adult fiction from the likes of Bruce Brooks and Chris Crutcher, comes Randy Powell. Winning kudos from such taciturn review sources as Kirkus and high praise from the American Library Association for his earlier works Dean Duffy, The Whistling Toilets, and Is Kissing a Girl Who Smokes Like Licking an Ashtray?, Powell delivers a page-turning speed read with well-developed and memorable characters that break and mend hearts, readers' and each others'. Grady Grennan is the son of Debbie Grennan, the titular dead rock star --- something along the lines of a cross between Janis Joplin and Kurt Cobain. There's to be a tribute to dead and inattentive Mom and Grady is to have a role in that, but he's not sure he wants it. There's also his mentally retarded half-stepbrother (the relationships in this book are complicated and mostly dysfuctional, but honestly portrayed) named Louie, one of most endearing of the cast, and certainly the frankest, unsentimental portrayal of retardation this reader has yet seen. Vickie, the wife of Louie's father, is amazingly frustrating and is without doubt, one of the most interesting stepmothers since Cinderella's; her personal revelation in the closing pages of the book make it easily the most satisfying young adult book I've read this year. Powell is quickly becoming a writer of note for this generation of young people. Highly recommended.
Another satisfying read from Powell.......2000-05-26
Hardcore skater Grady isn't thrilled with life after his rock-star mom overdosed a year ago, now he has to live with his grandmother who wants to tour the country with her new boyfriend in a Winnebago. Grady decides to visit other relatives, and his half-brother Louie in the pacific northwest...and to top it all off, mom's old band wants to get together and have a tribute concert and they want Grady to open the show with a few words...but all Grady can do is picture his absent mom and her final moments: choking on her own vomit.
If you liked this book, try _Dean Duffy_, a great read about finding your little place in the world.
really good.......2000-03-18
at first i thought that i wasn't going to like this book.(sorry, sometimes i judge books by their covers). anyway when I started to read it,i couldn't put it down. Grady was . . .How can i say this, a different kind of character. You walk down the street and you see someone like grady and you think that their your average skater. never thinking that they might have fears and doubts just like the next person. this book is a must read.

Product Description
