Book Description

How did the Soviet Union compare economically with its allies and adversaries before and during World War II? Was Soviet economic survival under massive German attack to be expected? What was the cost of the war in rubles, lives and foregone postwar economic well-being? In this book Mark Harrison answers these questions, providing a comprehensive analysis of the hitherto secret Soviet statistical record.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Dry and technical essential reading.......2003-11-24

This book is extremely dry and technical, and a background in economics and even mathematical concepts applied to economics is definitely recommended.

It is very much a book about macroeconomical aspects of the war: how it was financed, what did the decisions regarding manpower and other resource distribution issues imply, and so on. The wealth of information regarding these aspects of the Soviet war economy make it worthwhile for anybody interested in wartime economics, despite the heavy reading.

      Book Description

Although many books have been published in the Soviet Union on the theory and practice of accounting in the United States, this is the first work to provide Americans with an analogous exchange of information. Ehiel Ash and Robert Strittmatter describe the details of accounting procedure for Soviet industrial enterprises as it exists in the USSR's managed socialist economy. The methodology of accounting is examined as a required first step in the evaluation of Soviet enterprise data, and the continuing interdependence of accounting, planning, statistics, and economic policies is also stressed. Since accounting methodology is the only means in the Soviet Union for collecting, classifying, and summarizing economic information, Ash and Strittmatter characterize a firm grounding in Soviet theory and practice as essential for the examination of statistical data on the Soviet economy. They divide their work into three parts, covering the political and economic environment of Soviet enterprise management, accounting theory as the basis for creating accounting practice, and accounting for economic resources and processes in industrial enterprises. Among the topics discussed are control through accounting, and the Soviet government's use of it to direct industrial activity and the economic behavior of its people; and the influence of Marxist/Leninist philosophy on economic planning, market activity, and enterprise recordkeeping and financial reporting. This unique work will be a useful resource for students and professionals in the fields of accounting, Soviet studies, and international business, as well as a valuable addition to both public and academic libraries.

From the supplier: Countries shifting from a centrally planned economy to a market economy are compelled to reform their banking systems. Many countries in Central and Eastern Europe and in the former Soviet Union are striving to transform their banks from the passive conduits of the past into efficient financial intermediaries and active agents of market discipline. Although attempts at banking reform in the region are contributing to the development of the banking industry, many banks in transition economies continue to be weakened by the slow pace of the introduction of market discipline. This lack of strong banking systems, in turn, is hindering the development of nonbank financial markets, private sector investment and the implementation of monetary policy. The structural weaknesses of the banks can be corrected by restructuring them financially, improving enabling environments, and transforming the industry through consolidation and privatization.

                        Book Description

From a well-respected author in the field of ecological debate, this is the first, authoritative history of twentieth century “green” culture. Philip Conford chronicles the surprising origins of the organic movement in Britain and America between the 1920s and 1960s. He reveals that the early exponents of the organic movement actually belonged more to extreme right-wing conservative groups, which were reacting to industrialization and the increasing threat to traditional country life, closely associated with socialist politics.

With the recent public concern about such issues as genetically-modified crops and animal by-products in animal feed, this book is powerful reinforcement to a longstanding controversy that affects us all.

4 out of 5 stars A fine introduction to a little known world.......2002-07-13

The kelp beds along the central and northern California coasts are a vast botanical and zoological wonderland known by few, and probably appreciated by less, given their history of commercial exploitation. Kelp are some of the largest plants in the world.

The book begins with an examination of kelp itself, its reproductive and growth processes, and its role in ceating a unique, delicate ecosystem. Attention is then turned to marvelous fishes, mollusks, birds, and and mammals, including the once nearly extinct california sea otter. The book also addresses the many uses of kelp, and the nuances of its harvesting and its long overdue conservation.

The book is very well organized and written. The four-color photographs are a delight, as well as being helpful in understanding the text.

I was fortunate enough to buy this book at the Monterey Aquarium, which must be visited, before actually seeing the kelp in the wild. I found that reading the book was a boon in appreciating and understanding what I was looking at, particularly in drives along the Big Sur coast and in Point Lobos State Park, which is worth at least one full day on its own. If you are going to this part of the world, or if you live there, this book is a must. Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Kelp forest are cool.......2001-08-10

The cover isn't real attractive but ,oh the book is so cool. Well written for the younger audience and for us older folks. The book focuses on the Kelp forest and its inhabitants. The world protected sea otter is featured many times. The pictures fit the text perfect. The book was first printed in 1992 and definitely endures the test of time. In the beginning of the book, Norbert Wu states the purpose of the book: "to help children discover beauty and life in a world they may otherwise not know at all." I'd say he achieved his goal. Kids can read this one alone, in a class setting and again with their parents.

I liked this book and how it traced Lee's research into the straight lead. Yet the crucial mistake Teri Tom makes is not posting a video of her performing the straight lead or including some kind of cd-rom. Pictures of her doing each step of the straight lead is all well and good, but her timing, her speed, and so much more do not show up in static pictures. If she is really interested in preserving Bruce Lee's life work, she should release a seminar video for sale. Not everyone can trek down to CA to see her do a seminar.

5 out of 5 stars Straight Lead should be required reading.......2007-07-27

As a lowly TKD student of one year I recently began challenging myself with questions like... what if in a real fight situation I encounter someone with a little knowledge/training in martial arts (not uncommon) or say enter an open tournament in which I would meet well-trained individuals from other disciplines, how would I fare. The answer plain enough to me was --- not well at all! I don't mean to say TKD is an inadequate art but that realistically countering other arts _requires_ some exposure or at least a little training for.

That got me into Straight Lead. It is an excellent read, accessible, good writing, does what it sets out to do very very well. Teaching you how to execute a killer JKD straight punch from every scientific, fistic and strategic point of view. Her discussion of JKD and Bruce Lee politics was also totally warranted. In his own short life BL was very controversial and her book helps understand why it was, why it still is and what politics you may encounter in your own study.

Has this book helped me answer my own questions? Am I really better equipped for a tough customer? Absolutely!!! I recently threw the straight lead at an experienced sparring partner and unfortunately hit his unprotected temple a bit harder than I intended and stung his eye. I regretted and deeply apologized immediately as one should always. My supervisor thought it was a wild punch, my partner thought it a lucky punch. I thought it was so quick neither of them really saw it until it had landed. In other words Straight Lead teachings about non-telegraphic motion, trajectory, speed, body and footwork really do work.

Finally if you are just beginning in martial arts as I am, beware you will learn many potentially deadly skills long before you are able to effectively control them -- as I just did. Do not attempt to study Straight Lead or any other martial art in isolation, enroll in a good school, train very diligently, go for your black belt. You should learn and practice the straight lead in a safe setting so you can unleash it to deadly effect only when needed.

5 out of 5 stars Where are we on our path to simplicity?.......2007-07-02

We should all ask ourselves this question. Life is so so complicated. We humans are programmed to complicate everything. Thats too simple, it wont work, it wont sell, it cant be right, etc. Why cant we accept simple? I have been in Martial Arts for almost 30 years off and on. My path has taken me from Karate, Wing Chun, Ninjutsu, Aikido, Wing Chun- not a typo... yes I returned to Wing Chun, Kali and Muay Thai. What was I looking for because each art had pros and cons for many situations?
After reading this book, I applaud the Bruce Lee foundation and Teri Tom for an excellent book on simplicity- the art of JKD. I have wanted this art for years but have been burned out trying to find great instructors.

Of course most people giving their reviews here will have their opinion, and if it does not match their invested years Martial Arts, you will get a bad report of this book.

Well I'm here to tell you that with all my invested (good or bad) years of learning I feel this is one of the best books in my expanded library!!
Simple and I know this works, I've seen Bruce Lee move!
Oh by the way, I am not connected to JFD or this organization in any way, I hope to change that in the future.
I will dedicate my training to this lead punch until this technique is mine!!!!
                                            Thank you.

I love dissecting punching physics. A book that would lead me to my own exploration of that would be a wonderful thing. Or; any teacher that would want me to make my own exploration of martial arts and stay away from politics would probably be what I need.
                                            Need I say more ?

3 out of 5 stars Good study of a technique; some loyalist myopia.......2006-09-17

Teri Tom, a loyalist of the Jun Fan branch, does a fine job breaking down this technique, as it was taught to her. She also quite painstakingly explores Bruce Lee's original notes and some of his original source material (boxing, fencing). This book suffers, however, from Ms. Tom's poor understanding of power transmissions of the systems that she disparages and disrespects, particularly wing chun (which she almost completely misunderstands), and other Asian systems which offer similar (if not superior) power using different physics. She also goes out of her way to spark controversy and conflict with jeet kune do itself, with chapters dedicated to "setting the record straight" for her branch. These problems aside, the book is pretty good.

This young adult nature novel tells the story of the life of a crossbreed cat—the offspring of a mating between a large feral female house cat and a much larger wild bobcat. The story follows the adventures of the cat from the time of his birth in southern Wisconsin, his precarious and near-fatal experience in a flash flood, a rescue by a young boy who adopts him and their accidental separation in an incident which takes the cat far away to Arkansas, where he is hunted and mistreated by many people as he gradually travels overland toward home.

I first read this book in the 3rd or 4th grade, and I am very grateful that I did. I believe I have read this book over 7 times, and will probably read it seven times more. Although the book has one of those odd "young adult" classifications, it reads quite well for an adult. It also, in my not-so-unbiased opinion, has withstood the test of time (originally published in 1967 or thereabouts). If you or your children have a love of cats, wildlife, America and/or adventure, or if you are already familiar with Eckart's inimitable narrative style, check this book out. You'll almost certainly have to buy it used, but fortunately, Amazon has several links available to do this. Special thanks to Allan Eckart himself, not only for writing this moving tale, but also for personally helping me to find a used copy. All in all, a much-cherished piece of my childhood.
