You may use the book as a learning tool if you are highly unorganized. As a companion workbook to the main book, it provides skeleton forms for the exercises and select problems from the main book. It is something that the average person could do without.

Dated but Fascinatingly Thorough.......2004-07-11

Acclaimed science-fiction writer Isaac Asimov displays his excellent understanding of the physics behind our Universe as he explains the forces that hold the Universe together--and may ultimately tear it apart. From an explanation of the most fundamental forces of nature and their effects, he builds upon the material presented previously to thoroughly explain all known major cosmological phenomena. Interspersed throughout are a bit of anecdotes about scientific history, including how the gravitational constant was determined, how the first quasars and pulsars were discovered, and an introduction to some of astronomy's inside jokes. Very little is left unclear or ignored, and most of what is is that way because it simply was not understood when the book was written (and, in some cases, still is not understood).

The only negative point about this book is that it is, in some ways, very dated. The idea of a closed (and possibly oscillating) Universe that is put forth in the final chapter of the book is no longer in favor in the scientific community, as recent observations (which are widely held to be conclusive) indicate that the expansion of the Universe is not slowing down and may in fact be accelerating. Less outstanding, but much more aggravating, is its use of the obsolete CGS (centimeters-grams-seconds) system of measurement rather than the now-standard MKS (meters-kilograms-seconds) system on which most familiar metric measurements (such as Newtons, Joules, and Watts) are based.

Best of Them All.......2003-11-03

You won't find a better explanation of how the universe began and, using only space, hydrogen, & helium, built everything else from that, alone. This is the simplest, most straight-forward explanation of how gravity can attract enough mass (hydrogen atoms) until the force of gravity crushes those atoms and changes them into heavier atoms in a series of steps that can result in everything from the sequence our sun is undergoing to novas (that create brand-new, extra heavy atoms & blow them out into space to drift, aggregate, and form new stars with planets around them) and - finally - black holes. So simple even a high school student can understand it and then remember the rest of her life. Find this book. Read it. You'll be glad you did. It really is the best of them all.

The universe is a very strange place and to me, the most bizarre objects are black holes. They are things where the gravitational attraction is so strong that not even light can move fast enough to get away. While the complete definition of black holes requires a great deal of sophisticated mathematics, the fundamental principles are easy to understand. No one is better at explaining science and in this thorough, non-mathematical explanation of how black holes can exist, Asimov is at his best.

He starts with the basics of escape velocity and then increases the size of the objects until they are large enough to be black. The steps follow in logical order and all are well explained. If you are interested in the physics of black holes, Asimov will teach you.

A Classic Masterpiece of Science Writing.......1998-11-21

Asimov handily explains the workings of the Universe to his point in time (roughly 1986). He organizes the book logically, beginning with basic concepts such as mass and the simple structures of matter, and finishing with the complete cycle of stellar evolution. He explains the birth and death of stars and includes exciting descriptions of the many different forms that stars can take: yellow suns, blue giants, red giants, white dwarves, novas, supernovas, neutron stars, pulsars, and finally black holes. The Collapsing Universe inspired and helped with several of my college compositions and is truly a model of unbeatable descriptions of science writing. A must for anyone interested in studying astronomy for the first time.

the very best book about science !!!.......2003-11-03

I read this book back in the early 1980's. It explains, one very small, simple step at a time, how gravity crushes atoms when enough matter is gathered (as in a large star), what happens to the matter when it is crushed, what the individual steps in that process are, and how the final explosion of a huge, collapsing star creates and spreads brand-new (heavy) atoms into space - where they eventually aggregate and form things like new stars with planets around them. This book made the impossible seem like mere child's play. You will NEVER forget what this book can offer you - one small, clear, understandable step at a time. Find one. Read it. You'll be glad you did, trust me. As books go, this one's a real keeper.

Seminal work.......2006-12-02

This is an outstanding work on a much-avoided subject. While we would very much like to pretend that our society is violence free (at least as far as it pertains to us individually), the sad reality is that this is not the case. Cooper's writing on this topic is spot on, his prose is a study in how to use an incredible command of the language and his brevity in doing so is nothing short of amazing. I can not recommend this book high enough for those interested in this subject matter.

This is a hard copy of a presentation. If you took out the drawings and put on 8.5x11 paper, it would probaby be only a few pages long.

That said, it is excellent advice and worthy of keeping around to read on a regular basis. I plan on giving a copy to each of my teenage kids.

Jeff Cooper is the best --- but this is a pamphlet, not a book!.......2005-11-06

If you're looking for information from the best in his field, Jeff Cooper is the go-to guy. But DO NOT waste your money on this "book." This is a reissue of a 1989 training presentation that Cooper developed.

While his chapter headings are good (7 principles), each "chapter" is about 2-3 pages of large print. The entire "book" contains only 28 pages on which there is reading material, and many of those pages are less than half full. And Paladin Press, usually fairly competent, apparently never bothered to proofread this mess, with missing punctuation and errors such as "50-called" instead of "so-called."

I will now give you the entire book, in less than 100 words:

Here are the seven principles of successful personal defense:

- Alertness
- Decisiveness
- Aggressiveness
- Speed
- Coolness
- Ruthlessness
- Surprise

And the one take-home nugget of insight from this book:
All of these principles must be backed up by one's SKILL with a firearm, which requires training and practice. "YOU ARE NO MORE ARMED BECAUSE YOU ARE WEARING A PISTOL THAN YOU ARE A MUSICIAN BECAUSE YOU OWN A GUITAR." This one sentence inspired me to schedule some refresher training, and to set aside some additional time on a weekly basis to practice and maintain my skills.

OK, I just saved everyone about $10, plus s+h, plus the wait for it to arrive in the mail, plus the disappointment that you didn't buy one of Jeff's other books instead. Buy a box of JHPs with good stopping power, and think of me [fondly, NOT as the imaginary target!] the next time you go to the practice range.

There have been many excellent books written on the techniques of Karate by many instructors. However, there have been few books written on the philosophy of Karate, especially pertaining to the Dojo Kun (the 5 guiding principles of Shotokan Karate) and Niju Kun (the 20 subordinate principles of Shotokan Karate) that Master Gichin Funakoshi (1868-1957, the founder of Shotokan Karate) wrote.

Master Teruyuki Okazaki, who was a direct student of Master Funakoshi and who is the Chief Instructor of the International Shotokan Karate Federation, presents this excellent book that he has written with great care and detail on the Dojo Kun and the Niju Kun. In it, he gives us his interpretation of them and ideas about incorporating them not only in Karate training, but also in daily life. One of the many great things about this book is that it is very "reader friendly". It is written in a way that both young students and older students can understand it and benefit from it. No matter whether one is contemplating starting Karate training, is a beginner in Karate training, has stopped Karate training (and is contemplating coming back to Karate training) or has been training in Karate for many years, Master Okazaki's book is certain to provide deeper thought and contemplation about the true meaning of Karate-Do, along with its values and benefits to one's life.

The book's artwork features a very distinct and unique cover jacket (designed by Hiroyoshi Okazaki) with the Japanese calligraphy for "Jinkaku kansei ni tsumoru koto" ("Seek perfection of character") as its center, with the Shotokan Tiger subtly embodied underneath it and blending in with the black cover. The inner cover sleeves have a recent color photo of Master Okazaki and also a color photo of Master Okazaki with his teachers Master Funakoshi and Master Masatoshi Nakayama taken sometime during the 1950`s. Each of the title pages of the chapters on each tenet of the Dojo Kun and Niju Kun is written in English with its Japanese translation using the alphabet, along with being written in the center of the pages in Japanese kanji and hiragana calligraphy by Master Nakayama, as is the Japanese calligraphy on the cover of the book. The Karate terms and Japanese terms in the book are italicized and are included in a glossary of terms in the back of the book. GMW Publishing has organized this work of art into a fine example of easy to read and easy to follow martial arts literature.

While this is a book to be read for the pure sake of reading, it is also a reference book and a book to be contemplated and studied. For these reasons, Master Okazaki also gives his own methodology or "recipe" for understanding and incorporating the Dojo Kun and Niju Kun into our training and into our daily lives by using this book.

Master Okazaki emphasizes that he wants to bring the Dojo Kun and Niju Kun back into the mindset of Karate students and martial artists throughout the world. By writing this outstanding and excellent book, he is certainly doing exactly that. In this book he also speaks highly of his teacher Master Funakoshi and the example set by him, along with the ideals that he learned from him. In keeping the Dojo Kun and Niju Kun emphasized to Karate students through this book and through his teachings, Master Okazaki has clearly carried on Master Funakoshi's example. No doubt, Master Funakoshi would be very proud of his student!

In this book, Okazaki sensei explains the 5 points of the dojo kun and Funakoshi's 20 precepts in a clear, easy to read, and easy to understand manner - providing concrete examples of how to apply the principles in your training and every day life situations. Okazaki sensei always tells us that karate training is about self improvement and becoming a better person. In this book, he condenses his life experience and tells us how. Many of the ideas are about taking personal responsibility and being aware of how your actions affect others.

The jacket design is simple, yet elegant. Inside, the layout is simple and the font is easy to read. The dimension of the book is small and it is light so it is easy to carry around - it as if the author intends this book to be used as a handbook. Reading the intro section of the nijukun part of the book on page 33 confirms this - he wants us to reflect on the nijukun daily until we know and understand the principles. I think you could almost classify this book as a self help or self improvement manual.

This paragraph from the book's intro is one of my favorites: "As you read Perfection of Character, keep in mind that I am sharing my interpretation of Master Funakoshi's principles. In the course of studying them and practicing them, I am certain that you will also develop your own unique understanding of their meaning and value." Okazaki sensei doesn't expect us to take his interpretation as the only one. He wants each of us to reflect upon and integrate the priciples in our own unique way.

I rate this as one of the best martial arts books in my library.

This book is really 'Living Well in Mexico,' 1999........2005-01-04

This book (first published by Muir in 1999 as Living Well in Mexico) was merely OK the first time around, but this version is literally the very same thing, just three years older (it is true that several miniscule changes have been made, for example using "50" instead of "fifty"). Although I read another review saying this was the same book, I must admit I assumed it couldn't be true and ordered it anyway--a mistake! I'm sending it back even though it pains me to pay the postage.

I also purchased Live Mexico and and Adapter Kit Mexico which I found to be an updated version of Live Well. More importantly, I used Adapter Kit Mexico as a resource for a potential purchase of a second home in Mexico. Life in Mexico is fluid not static and what I appreciated about this book is that it pointed me in the right direction and gave me a strategy for where to live and buy property.

Can Mr. Luboff, Avalon Travel books, or Amazon spell E-T-H-I-C-S ?
My wife and I are determined to move to Mexico. We have been reading several books about the process of making this transition and eagerly awaited Mr. Luboff's book. Having purchased (and enjoyed) his 1999 book, Live Well in Mexico, we figured, the 2002 Adapter Kit, would have more detail, and provide further assistance in our move. THE TWO BOOKS ARE ONE AND THE SAME!! Chapters were simply moved around, and 2 renamed.I don't have a problem with Mr. Luboff reworking his earlier book, but wouldn't it be ethical to state somewhere (on the cover, in the intro, OR in Amazon's write-up)that fact? I am disappointed. I have to assume Mr. Luboff has nothing further to say and forgot he had already published one book on the subject.

Useful advice.......2002-04-13

I liked the author's honest assessment of living in Mexico. It helped me to understand that relocating would be different than my frequent (and great) Mexico vacations. I especially appreciated the descriptions of individual regions and cities that the author believes offer the best lifestyle options for a new resident. This was a very thoughtful book and I know I'll make a better informed decision about moving because of the information provided.

'Johnny Voodoo' might be the best book i've ever read. The author does a good job of.. 1. drawing you in to the book, so you fee like you're actually right along there with Dedrie 2. Incorperates romance w/o makng it mushy 3. There's both depression and hapiness. it's an awesome book that I think everyone should read.

Johnny VooDoo was by far one of the best books I have read. Not many books will get me reading to the point where I don't want to stop until it's finished. Dierdre is an outcast in her town. She just moved there and she has no friends. She feels all alone between her home and school worlds and her mother had died years before. Then she meets Johnny and everyhting changes for Dierdre and she learns a valuable lesson. True love always lasts. But is the love between her and Johnny true love or is it just a game. Will their love last?

A Must Read Book.......2000-01-26

I read Johnny Voodoo for my 2nd period English class. I thought that it was one, if not the best book that I have ever read. It is about two outcasts who are brought together through love. It is more of a romantice book and some people are not in to them but if you are I think that you would enjoy this book. The two outcasts are Deirdre and Johnny and the story takes place in Charmette, Louisiana. Deirdre moves to Charmette from New York and she is very lonely there until she meets Johnny who is a homeless teenager. Deirdre classmates see them together one day and they make fun of her because some of the girls think that Johnny is good looking and they are jealous of Deirdre. So, she does not have many friends in Charmette. Deirdre has one other thing that upsets her and it is her father. He is not the nicest person to her and her mother died when she was little. But, like I said it is more of a romance so if your in to that I recommend that you read this.
