      Book Description

Written in response to the Supreme Court's landmark Daubert decision regarding provision of expert witness scientific testimony, Assessment of Rehabilitative and Quality of Life Issues in Litigation focuses on quality of life as a means of conceptualizing and measuring pain and suffering in the controversial enjoyment of life debate. The authors make a compelling argument for a quality of life paradigm based on a rehabilitation and health economics analysis, demonstrating that qualified rehabilitationists are the best experts to provide analyses of the impact of disability or injury on quality of life over the lifespan. The extensive literature review enables attorneys and litigation experts to easily access quality of life literature.

          Book Description

The rubric "Quality of Life" first came to the explicit attention of the medical profession a little over thirty years ago. Despite the undoubted fact that each one of us has his or her own Quality of Life, be it good or bad, there is still no general agreement about its definition, or the manner in which it should be evaluated. Although much has been written about quality of life, this work has been largely concerned with population-based studies, especially in health policy and health economics. The importance of individual quality of life has been neglected, in part because of a failure to define quality of life itself with sufficient care, in part perhaps because of a belief that it is impossible to develop a meaningful method of measuring individual variables.
The editors of this book believe that the primary focus of quality of life is and must continue to be the individual, who alone can define it and assess its changing personal significance. The challenge of presenting this belief

From the supplier: Extensive research has been conducted since about the late 1970s on problems relating to employee work life and work relationship. A substantial number of the studies have focused on specific issues such as gender, education or years of tenure. However, possible response bias has significant methodological/analytic ramifications for conducting human resources/job performance studies. A study was conducted to examine the potential survey response bias in terms of management and non-management classifications of organizational position, gender, tenure of service and education.

                        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The best text I know of on the the topic.......2001-12-20

This is an excellent textbook that has aged well and belongs close to the desk of anyone who is involved in managing forests and their contents. Hunter does an excellent job of pulling together ideas of landscape ecology, traditional wildlife management, and forestry techniques with a strong emphasis on the practical. The book is well written & I often find myself "coming to" seven or eight pages later after having pulled it off the shelf to look up one thing & then being drawn in to read more and more. My only complaint is that it IS a textbook, which affects the structure somewhat & more importantly affects the price. It is a lot to ask some of Hunter's audience to pay, but another way of looking at this is that it is cheaper in money, time and shelf space to get one good book than several bad ones, and this is certainly that one good book.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute gem.......2001-03-16

Malcolm Hunter's "Wildlife, Forests, and Forestry" is a gem of a book and an absolute must for every forest manager. This was the first synthesis of landscape ecology, wildlife biology, and forest management that I encountered, and I still refer to it today. Unlike many scholarly works, Hunter's treatment easily lends itself to operational, on the ground applications. Likewise, the prose is straightforward and suitable for those new to the field. I also strongly recommend his subsequent synthesis, "Maintaining Biodiversity in Forest Ecosystems," which is even better.

                            Book Description

This volume contains the proceedings of the 2004 University of Miami Workshop on Unconventional Superconductivity. The workshop was the fourth in a series of successful meetings on High-TC Superconductivity and related topics, which took place at the James L. Knight Physics Building on the University of Miami campus in Coral Gables, Florida, in January 1991, 1995, 1999, and 2004. The volume includes high-quality papers on state of the art works on unconventional superconductivity. A key issue, discussed by many in the workshop, was how homogeneous the cuprates are. STM data, as well as other reports, showed that the cuprate superconductors (SC's) studied were inhomogeneous, especially in the underdoped regime; while experiments, like ARPES and magnetoresistance have established the existence of a Fermi Surface, at least above some doping level, in the cuprates. Other topics ranging from the pseudogap problem to pairing mechanisms are also discussed by various authors. In general, experiments show more convergence than high-TC theories. There is definitely no consensus on the high- TC mechanism, although two broad groups exist: those around the extended "Big Tent" homogenous scheme, and those who assume an intrinsic inhomogeneous state. Another division could be viewed between those who consider the high- TC mechanism to be essentially of an electronic-magnetic origin (with no role played by the lattice), and those who assign an important role to the lattice. There seemed to be a consensus in the workshop that MgB2 and the fullerenes are simpler SC's than the cuprates, while work on ruthenocuprates and the coexistence of SC and ferromagnetism provided new stimuli to research and understanding. Interest was drawn also by the new NaxCoO2•yH2O SC. Although this is a low-TC material, its physical properties have a similarity to those of the cuprates; thus research on this system seems to be important for the understanding of high TC SC. The volume gives a brief overview of many facets of present day superconductivity research and should be of great interest to all scientists and research students who work in the field of superconductivity or related subjects in condensed matter physics and material sciences.

Vacant lots aren't really vacant: a surprising number of plants and animals live in the left-over spaces in our cities. In this fascinating guide, authors Vessel and Wong provide a broad introduction to the unique ecosystems that can survive in the urban environment.

Micheal Clark virtually wrote the book that personal trainers all over the country use to gain their certification in the field. As creator of the Optimum Performance Training system, he took personal training to a whole new level by introducing a program that could be fully customized for any sport. In this book, Clark will enable readers through his "self–assessment and design fitness system" to effectively pinpoint the weaknesses in their basketball skills and tailor a workout program that will improve on all the flaws in their game. By taking advantage of skill–specific tests, readers will be able to focus their workout time on the area they most need and will see quick results.

This user–friendly guide begins with a simple five–step assessment to help you realize what your game lacks. Whether you want explosiveness off the first step like Lebron James, the iron–man endurance of Steve Nash, the coordination and flexibility of Kevin Garnett, the vertical leap of Vince Carter, or the muscle strength of Amare Stoudemire, you'll pinpoint your deficiencies and benefit from the exact same workout that Clark uses for the NBA's biggest stars.

Clark's revolutionary approach to fitness and conditioning personalizes the workouts not only by sport, but also by performance skills, and will help you become the best basketball player you can be.

Optimum Performance Training: Basketball is a tough book to review. From the viewpoint of someone who's a NASM Performance Enhancement Specialist, I was expecting a more thorough approach on how to train NBA players. I didn't receive that with this book. However, Optimum Performance Training is a tremendous tool that the NASM trainer should give their basketball clients to minimize the 'buying in' process. Enhance yor credibility with this one.

This book is excellent for the general population and fitness professionals. It is easy to follow and so functional. The workouts are fun and produce great results! I am a physical therapist assistant and have been a personal trainer for 12 years and love all of NASM's resources. Caroline San Juan and Mike Clarke are wonderful!!

Entwining a tale of missing children with the story of a lonely little boy, Sonya Hartnett captures the tenderness and dread of childhood in a work of exceptional storytelling.

The year is 1977, and Adrian is nine. He lives with his gran and his uncle Rory. His best friend is Clinton Tull. Adrian loves to draw, and he wants a dog. He’s afraid of quicksand, shopping centers, and self-combustion. But as closely as he watches his suburban world, there is much he cannot understand. He does not, for instance, know why three neighborhood children might set out to buy ice cream one summer’s day and never be seen again. . . .

In this suburb that is no longer safe and innocent, in a broken family of self-absorbed souls, Sonya Hartnett sets the story of a lone little boy - unwanted, unloved, and intensely curious - a story as achingly beautiful as it is shattering. As her quiet tale ominously unfolds, we are reminded of how fragile are the threads that hold us secure - and how brave, how precious, is the heart of each child who soldiers on.

School Library Journal categorized this book as recommended for grades 6-9. Well, maybe if you want to warp a kid's worldview and perhaps put them off reading for a while.

This is a poetically written story of such utter existential hopelessness that it would feed right in to many young teens' natural propensity for loneliness and self-absorption. Goes with the territory in the teen years.

Just a little warning: on the level of emotions, this is an adult book.

                                  4 out of 5 stars Beautiful. .......2006-06-28

This is a poignant, delicately written novel with a heartrending ending and wistfully drawn characters. Beautifully drawn, the plot and characters move about in a world that's so familiar yet so alien, searching for a true home.

Adrian will capture your heart immediately, and his situation is one so frequently discussed and portrayed but yet so uniquely discovered.

Please, read this novel and you will not be disappointed. Yearning to be understood and loved, Adrian moves about the plot, watchful, careful, and many a time it almost brought tears to my eyes. Almost, but not quite.

The plot gets just a little boring after awhile, but then the melancholy ending leaves the reader only wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN, PERFECTLY VOICED..........2003-12-09

...either of which would be a great achievement, writing as the author does centered on the point-of-view of a nine-year-old boy in a lot of emotional pain. Adrian has been dumped more than once in his life - taken from his mother by the State when it is determined that she is unable to care for him, then later by his father who feels his `freedom' threatened by the presence of a child in his life. He lives with his grandmother Beattie and his uncle Rory - they have issues of their own, as does apparently everyone in his family. Beattie has lost her husband to cancer, and repeatedly muses in near-depressive resignation about being the mother of three adult children who cannot really be adults in the world. Rory is an emotional cripple as a result of a car accident that made a vegetable of his best friend, a direct result of rebellion against the upbringing Rory was given by his parents - he has become agoraphobic, never leaving the house. Sookie, Adrian's mother, is completely out of the picture (as is his dad) - no one has any idea of her whereabouts. Marta, Beatie's other daughter (who changed her name from Maggie when she decided it wasn't glamorous enough), is so cold and self-centered that when she comes to visit she sows nothing but conflict.

Into this atmosphere comes Adrian - actually a pretty normal nine-year-old, despite his view of himself. He's teetering on the brink of adolescence, and he's dealing emotionally with a pretty heavy case of abandonment anxiety - and this colors every aspect of his life. He is already developing numerous fears and phobias at his young age - he's afraid of shopping centers, quicksand, self-combustion; but mainly he begins to worry that he's about to be cast out again. Topping all of this off - and stirring the emotional pot mightily - is the case of three children who live nearby who seem to have simply vanished while walking a few blocks for ice cream. The children's parents appear on the telly, naturally distraught and tearful, begging of their return. The only clue seems to be a sketchy description of a `thin man' who was seen near the children just before they vanished - they city is in a panic, led by the fears of parents afraid their kids will be next. An unknown enemy is always the most frightful one.

Adrian is a great example of how children become abused and damaged in ways that are not as `direct' as people imagine when they hear the term `abused child'. While there is love and kindness in his life, the loneliness that he feels, and the fears of being abandoned by the shattered family that is left to him, are all too real. He is made to feel like a burden, someone to be traded off like a pet dog when it becomes too much trouble to deal with him.

Adrian hasn't many friends - his closest friend Clinton is only a superficial one. When a new family moves in across the street with three children, he feels himself drawn to them. He befriends Nicole, the oldest of the three - there are sparks within each of their personalities that draw the other. Nicole's mother is evidently dying - or at least seriously ill enough never to leave the house - and she is subconsciously very angry at her mom about this situation. She and Adrian hatch a plan to gain the attention of their families - and the admiration of the general populace - she thinks she knows where to find the missing children.

Another character that is portrayed vividly in this novel is a child named Sandra - most of the kids in school know her as Horsegirl. Sandra is a mysterious child with obvious emotional problems who has been placed in a school with neighborhood kids - she is both feared and ridiculed by her classmates, again depicting the fear with which we regard things we do not understand. Horsegirl is taller than the rest of her class, and loves to prance around like a horse, whinnying and neighing and snorting and stamping her feet. She carries a leather bridle and bit, sometimes running on the playground with the bit in her mouth - probably the only time she gets to feel a bit of freedom and happiness. When a substitute teacher comes to fill in while the children's regular instructor goes on her honeymoon, she is evidently not made aware of how `special' Sandra is - or how much liberty she has been granted in the classroom. A confrontation ensues, and Horsegirl lashes the substitute across the face with her bridle - the class is shocked and electrified, realizing deep inside that a line has been crossed.

All of Hartnett's characters - the adults and children alike - are wonderfully drawn, and the emotions that run so deeply through her story are honestly, delicately and believably portrayed. There are no punches pulled here - and that makes for a pretty rocky ride emotionally for the reader, but it's a ride that's more than worth it.

Hartnett has a fine reputation as an author of novels for young adults - and I suppose that's why this novel is grouped there. I've seen notes that say `ages 9 and up' regarding it - but I think it's a bit strong for younger readers. Moreover, I think it does the novel a bit of a disservice - this is a well-written work that can and should be enjoyed by a wider range of readers. Pitching it into the `young adult' bin is going to cause adult readers to skip over it - and that would be a shame. I feel fortunate that I came across it in the library with no indication of `reading level' attached to it - I would have missed out on something very memorable and rewarding.

5 out of 5 stars So Beautifully Written!.......2003-06-04

A long song, really... All the things that broke your heart in childhood, brought back sharply in your mind, all the disappointment of adulthood on display... Dark, yet so poignant, yearning, beautiful, sad and dark and lonely, and... Brilliant.
I have to sit quietly after reading anything by Ms. Hartnett. she makes my soul shiver.
Read it. You be the judge.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Haunting.......2003-05-14

This is a beautifully written novel that will clutch at your heart. Adrien is an emotionally abused child with no sense of self-worth: he has been shuttled around, unwanted and friendless, and is now living with his grandmother and uncle. They worry about uprooting the boy, not realizing that he has no roots, no emotional connections.

I tend to see it as being for older teens and adults-- though it is sometimes difficult to get them to read a book about a nine year old. Reading a few paragraphs will convince anyone that this is not a child's perspective, but an omnicient somewhat dispassionate narrator with an adult's perspective. Some may be perturbed that the missing children mentioned so prominently are never found in the course of the book: we tend to want things tied up in neat packages. In fact, the children's disappearance does drive the book in that it sets Adrien's course, but they are not the focus. The language and imagery are exquisite.

I would recommend this to someone wanting a "think about" book-- it's not a quick casual read.

I would also like to chastise the professional reviewer who gave away the ending. Not very professional, in my opinion.

My son has always loved Violet and her adventures. This book is colorful, interesting and includes real photos at the end. My son is 5 now, and when he chooses his books he still brings me the ones about Violet!

5 out of 5 stars Another "hit" from Julie Aigner-Clark & Baby Einstein!.......2003-02-20

Violet loves looking at birds and their nests through her binoculars - and loves photographing what she finds!

My 18 month old daughter adores the Baby Einstein books and this is the newest addition to our growing collection, and our first of the Violet "series".

The way the actual photographs of birds and nests are encorporated into the story (as pictures that Violet takes with her trusty camera) is wonderful. I especially love the "touch and feel" feather toward the end (my daughter likes to 'scratch' it)...a pleasant surprise as none of our other Baby Einstein books have this feature.

But I particularly love Nadeem Zaidi's vivid/bold illustrations, which I believe is the key to the success of the Baby Einstein books (in the eyes of the youngsters who adore them). My daughter loves to point to the pictures as we read to her and she enjoys trying to read this story back to Mommy & Daddy (pointing at pictures while she babbles and turns the pages)). This is one of her new favorite stories - it is one of three books accompanying us on our upcoming airplane trip (and we've got hundreds of books to choose from)!

I am anxious to see the other Violet books as this one is definitely a keeper!
