Prepare for a full brain..........2006-12-13
A ravenous beastie, technology eats everything it touches. Our daily lives, the way we shop, how we communicate, our work habits, the way we entertain ourselves, and how we exist day by day have all irreversibly transmogrified in the maw of the computer and information age. Now we live like network packets, shooting from node to node with rarely a pause, gathering and transporting information. In degrees of busyness, we've outdone the bees. Such a tsunami of change has to impact the way we govern ourselves. And of course it does. Not even the law escapes technology.
Patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets. Technology has chiseled into each one of these modes of intellectual property protection. But the issues remain complicated and hairy, and this book, with text thick as shag carpet, provides a detailed starting point for exploring the legal implications of technology.
After a thorough introduction to the United States' legal system, some 75 pages worth, the book dives into patent law. Any questions about the nature of patents such as cost, usefulness, novelty, nonobviousness, infringement, or validity receive apt treatment. The book even throws in an overview of the significant Patent Reform Act, not yet passed as of this writing. This Act promises to overhaul the United States patent system, potentially obsoleting some of the information presented. Concerning the patentability of computer programs, the whole drama gets laid out like an adventure tale. Computer programs didn't become patentable overnight. Some even doubted their eligibility for protection.
Trade secrets and their discontents, such as reverse engineering, receive a bulky chapter. These issues affect nearly all technology employees. Use caution, because tricks, shortcuts, or streamlined processes taken from one company to the next could, depending on the circumstances, misappropriate secret information. And when that happens the lawyers come out swinging.
The fuzzy nature of Copyright law receives as much tree bark as patent law. Questions arise on this subject often, especially in regard to the internet. Can I copy an image and put it on my site? Can I legally download digital music? What if a .jpeg doesn't have a copyright notice? The book provides a suitable background to answer these. And, similar to patents, the copyrightablility of computer programs also weaved a loopy route. At first they received overwhelming protection, which disturbed judges, who then abstracted, filtered, and compared protection down to a mere kernal of expression. The entire yarn gets told.
The book ends with chapters on trademarks, domain name issues, tort liability, privacy law, and issues related to contracts, particularly "shrink-wrap" and "click-wrap" licenses. At over 600 pages, the book defies summary. Prepare for a full brain.
Along the way, excerpts from actual court cases, including many Supreme Court decisions, bolster the main text. Not only that, a case study, CoolEdge, runs through the entire length of the book, elucidating murky concepts with comprehensible examples.
This book won't turn readers into lawyers, but it will open up a world of technology law to those with the gusto to brave its dense contents. Some chapters take upwards of two or three hours to complete. But the effort offers great rewards of legal knowledge at a detailed level unobtainable in most survey books or on FAQ websites. Best of all, no legal knowledge is required upon entry. Absolute beginners can comprehend every word in this book. As such it provides a great, but ardous, starting point for technology law.
Hot Field, Hot Book!.......2000-10-30
Call this book Release 2.0! It's a fine upgrade from Prof. Burgunder's prior release.
With the growth in the internet and the advent of business method patents, interest in patent, trademark and copyright issues has surged to new heights. Awareness and integration of these legal aspects into our management of technology is absolutely vital for the future.
I practice law. Specifically, I work on intellectual property matters. I am also building two websites. As a result, I am keen on staying on top of my field. Professor Burgunder's new treatise is an important addition to the literature in this field. He writes in an accessible manner: open to students, interested people and legal practitioners alike. In addition, the arrangement of the book is well thought-out: you don't have to read or study it from the first chapter. Depending on your familiarity with this field, you can select topics and areas to review or you can build a college course around the book.
I was also delighted to see that Dr. Burgunder has been intelligent in the use of a web site to keep the book current.
If you are interested in technology and legal issues, this is a great book to help you! I recommend it heartily.
Stay Current on Technology & The Law!.......2000-07-28
A splendid piece of work! It is timely and up-to-date with all the most recent & important technological law issues, including the Internet. It contains sophisticated analysis, but in an easy-to-read style. I particularly liked how the Internet is treated in the context of associated technology issues, rather than segregated as a separate unrelated universe. A big plus is the web site connected to the book where Burgunder provides updates about current issues --- such as Napster, Internet linking, and the antitrust case against Microsoft. This will keep the material fresh for years to come! I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about technology law. It's a winner!
helpful, well written, informative.......2000-07-26
I bought this book because it was the most recent publication purporting to explain technology law. Although I thought the price was a little high, I sure got more than my money's worth. This book really covers the most important and interesting topics in technology law, and it does so extremely well. Biotech, Internet patents, privacy, obscenity, copyrights, trade secrets, click-wraps, domain names, design protection, strategies for computer programs, the Microsoft Antitrust case-you name it and this book has got it. The book also deals with international matters, such as the WTO, and international strategic considerations. The court case examples are well selected, and the editing is superb. They are not to short to be trivial, but not to long either. I also visited the Web site mentioned on the back cover. It already has a bunch of helpful updates, including the Napster and DVD encryption (DeCSS) debates, among many others. This really is a great book. I recommend it highly.
Lawyers and Beyond!.......2000-05-09
A must reading for not only lawyers, but for techies who must know the implications of trademark, patent, and copyright law. Because of the clarity of the writing, it is also an intersting read for the general public. Can't wait for the new book...!

HOW TO GET A GRIP ON FARM FINANCES
If farm finances mystify you, "Caserio Farm: A New Beginning" is the book to read. A unique blend of textbook, case study and novel, this book by Daria Makota is financial management education artfully aimed at farmers in today's economy.
Based on real life experience, "Caserio Farm: A New Beginning" follows a brother and sister through a stormy first year after they purchase the already heavily financed family farm from their parents. An early shock comes when a loan for current year production is turned down due to their heavy debt load.
Take a seat at the kitchen table as Makota's farming duo examines each argument for and against change, wrestles with daily problems and looks ahead at coming seasons while pressures mount in their struggle to turn around an unprofitable operation.
Makota delivers a rare and human look at each decision's effect on the farm's financial health and breaks new ground with actual financial records that show the impact of each transaction. The entire financial cycle is here in a painless, easy to follow format that makes "Caserio Farm: A New Beginning" a moving picture of a struggling farm in words, actions, dollars and sense.
Find out how to set up a farm accounting system. Learn to read, interpret and analyze year end financial statements. Discover what financiers and accountants want from farmers. Get the most from financial advisors. This timely book is packed with useful tips.

Thieves, Deceivers, and Killers: Tales of Chemistry in Nature
ASIN: 0201626586 |
Book Description
Master the techniques of America's greatest rider.* Glide over rocks, logs, and ledges* Attack steep climbs and rapid descents* Carve through curves and turns* Train smart, then ride to winImprove your performance with these tips, techniques, and off-road tales from mountain biking legend Ned Overend."At the 1990 world championships in Durango, Colorado, Thomas Frischknecht and I were locked in a dogfight...... At the start of the fourth and final lap was a pitch of rocky, loose trail that went straight up the face of a ski run...... My Swiss rival had been dismounting and running this climb while I stayed on my bike. On previous laps, I'd opened a little gap, so I knew this would be my chance. I attacked when Thomas got off again. He never caught me...... To ride that steep trail, I had to use five climbing techniques. There's no reason why you can't make them part of your arsenal, too."
Customer Reviews:
Motivating.......2006-02-13
I really don't know if someone can improve your skills by reading a book. If you think so, Brian Lopes book is a better choice. Ned's book, however, is a really motivating tool. You will want to ride 100000000000000000 km after reading the book. As a mountain biker for almost 5 years, i must assume that the book is beginner's oriented.
NED'S CHAMPION AND HIS BOOK IS HIS COMPENDIUM.......2005-11-15
If you feel like reading a book may boost your skill to ride a bike, well don't look any further: grab Ned's masterpiece and absorb it to your deepest neurons. Why? Because Ned's Ned. He takes you through five milestones or temple's columns: Balance, pedaling in circles, shifting frequently, vision and braking. Of course the book has a lot more to tell you, but if you master these five, you'll be light-years ahead. Do not believe that reading will take you to the next level of skill, but READING AND PRACTISING YES. Buy Ned's book and carefully follow his hints, practice them till boredom and you'll be flabbergasted of how farther you can get. I did it and my friends are now behind me....
Very usefull book.......2005-10-14
I found this book very usefull, the only catch is the bike slang used to describe every situation, technique, etc. As my nature language is not English it was a lot more difficult to understand every concept explained on the book... maybe for some others this will not be a problem.
Now, this book is great, it will improve your skills and bike control, specially if you aren't and advanced rider. The book is full of tips, personal Ned's experiences (great value) and various drills to help you improve faster. But, although it's a great book this is not a must-have... its simply great-to-have.
I gave 4 stars and maybe it should be 4.5 but not 5 because it lack a little of detail and it contain very few photos. Maybe more experienced riders find usefull a simple explanation (which is simple for him being an experienced rider) but beginners like us need more photos so we can understand right away every concept.
Hope this helps!
Inside information.......2005-09-23
this book gives good insight informaiton into the techniques of handling a mountain bike. It is interesting to see descriptions of techniques that have been gained through years of trial and error.
It gives an opportunity to refine techniques that have been learned . It would be difficult for a novice biker to apply the information directly. Practice is essential. A few more practical excercises would be good, Mr. Overend. All in all, a good read.
Wonderfully helpful and well written.......2005-02-01
I have been riding adult bikes for 31 years. This book taught me balance exercises that I did not know. Lots of the book just repeats stuff that can be found elsewhere but that is valuable too. Shouldn't there be one compendium that captures 95% of the knowledge on a subject? This is a wonderful book and very well priced.

Book Description
In 1956, 22-year-old Frank Huffman embarks on a journey that will take him from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia to the exotic Orient, and eventually around the world. In this fascinating tale of adventure, Huffman shares his experiences and emotions during two years as a French interpreter for a community development team on the Plain of Jars in Laos, Indochina.
At the end of his tour in Laos, he buys a motorcycle and sets out for Europe, with only a National Geographic map of Asia and the optimism of youth as his guide. He takes us along for the ride as he
- climbs the fabled Angkor Wat in Cambodia,
- cycles up the road to Mandalay in Burma,
- floats up the Chindwin River on a river boat,
- is chased by a motorcycle-hating cow near the Taj Mahal,
- participates in a mutiny on a ramshackle bus in the Pakistani desert,
- thumbs his way across Iran to Turkey, and
- carouses through Europe in a Simca with pilfered sleeping bags and C-rations.
Throughout this marathon, Huffman offers keen insights on the culture and society of Laos and the some 25 countries he passes through, and also provides trenchant commentary on subsequent events in those countries. HuffmanÂ's self-deprecatory humor and his undisputed mastery of the English language make Monks and Motorcycles a delightful read.
Customer Reviews:
An unforgetable adventure across Southeast Asia and beyond.......2006-03-04
Monks and Motorcycles is unlike any other book I've read, before or since. A fascinating account of an unforgettable adventure across Southeast Asia and beyond, Monks and Motorcycles challenges readers to think that breath taking experiences the world over are just a motor cycle ride away. Masterfully written and powerfully affecting, Monks and Motorcycles is a gift to dreamers and travelers alike! Don't let it pass you by.
Vicarious Adventures.......2005-03-18
When I finished reading Franklin Huffman's travelogue--with a whole section of interesting pictures, albeit a bit faded and just black-and-white--the first thought that came to my mind was: It is hard these days to conceive of a young American traveling as freely through the world, particularly in Asia, as this author (also well-known linguist and accomplished diplomat) did in the fifties. All the more reason to do it vicariously, by reading it, chapter by chapter, one more interestig than the other, and enjoying funny happenings, cross-cultural misunderstandings, lessons in ethnolinguistics, and lots of geography--the last maybe more needed now than ever. The style is direct and highly accessible; the lessons are far-ranging and memorable. For the impatient reader: Each chapter can be read separately, like a short-story taking place in a different place.
Authentic Adventure.......2005-01-23
This book captivates a sense of adventure and transformation from the `every day' life into the enchantment of what can be. Each chapter fits as almost complete stories, which allows the power of events to happen at a timely pace. Normally, I read several hundred pages, for this type of genre, in a few hours. Monk's and Motorcycles is the sort of book that lends itself to reading a chapter at time. The author's ideas leave `food for thought.' This book reflects a sincere person who's able to convey how his life is today as it stands, partly, on the `shoulders of the lessons learned in the time that this story takes place.

Customer Reviews:
Still flowing.......2002-06-05
After 27 books this storyline is still flowing. I really like Paolo and Claire. I have begun to gain respect for Claire as the story continued. On the flip side of that, Zoey has become more nerve racking with each book.
A foot note to Christopher. I understand that he was being polite by inviting Felicia to hang out with him and Eesh. However, you might want to take heed to the unspoken tention that exist between the two of them(espceially from Aisha). I thought that perhaps Christopher would have learned after the other numerous screw-ups with Eesh, that is obviously not the case.
I am glad that Mr. P had the little talk with Zoey about love and forgiveness. Claire really did not have to go their with Nina about Benjamin in front of everybody. Even though Benjamin has greatly disappointed me, I still like him and Nina together.
Good Book.......2002-03-10
I read this book in less than 2 hours. And it was good. I have only read a few of Katherine's books but this is one of the best. It is about Paolo and Claire. Paolo insists that he is in love with Claire even when Claire really doesn't want a relationship. They spend sometime together and even if Claire doesn't want to admit it she starts to return his feelings. But she just got over being stalked by a stalker and for some reason she thinks he might be one also. Is Paolo a stalker? Does Claire tell him what she fells? Read it to find out. Good Book!
I couldn't put it down!.......2000-08-24
I bought this book and it took me four hours to read it! I couldn't put it down. In the beginning of the book, I got so impatient with the character, Zoey. I felt like jumping in the pages and shaking her a bit. Lucas is toooooo sweet to be treated like that, although he did kiss Nina, but sooooo what! I like Paolo. Clair needs to get off her high horse and realize that not all guys are scum. I'm hooked on Applegates series the "Animorph", "Everworld", and the "Making Out",but I think the "Making Out" series holds the torch. Even if the "Making Out" series dies, we still can reread the books. (I've read every Animorph book twice and it didn't hurt. So I'm wierd...so what!) Who knows, Maybe we can follow them through college. Other writers are successful in doing so. I would like to see if Lucas and Zoey wed...It is a natural thing to marry. I would like to see if Ben and Nina hook up. Also Jake and Clair? Possibility. But Lara is dead. Let her go. She's not Elvis! But in any event... Keep up the good work K.A. Applegate.
great book!.......2000-08-22
this book was great! zoey still needs to losen up and stop being such a snob. paolo and claire make a funny couple- i'm glad she's (finally) found someone who likes her for who she is, not for what she looks like. this book was great for anyone who likes this series or who likes sweet valley! =) ps: how do you pronouce paolo? pah-oh-low? paul-oh? pay-ah-low? pay-oh-low? how?
AWESOME COOL MAN!.......2000-08-17
this was my absouloute fav! But i hate Paolo! i Cant find out how to pernounce his name! Claire Should Tottally dump him for sure! I still can't get over laura's death! I can not belive they did not even talk about her in this book. I hthink they should have her being in heaven or something so that we can still get to hear about what happens to her. That would be sooooooooo cool. I can't belive that I've been hearing that number 48 is the last book...I seems like I was just on 27! I don't know where all the time went...the books are just so fun to read that you lose track of how many you have read! Wow! I'll probably cry on the last book like I did Laura died, and every time zoey wont talk to lucas. This is the best book! You should definatly pick it up at your nearest book store. I can't wait for number 48!
