Crop Duster's Paradise.......2001-07-24
There are very few books that deal with the subject of agricultural flying, or crop dusting as it used to be known. Props in the Crops beautifuly displays the various aircraft currently in use in ag flying and also reaches back into the days when Stearman's ruled the back and forth industry.
If you've ever driven down country road and stopped to gaze in admiration as an ag pilot plied his trade, then you will surely appreciate the hundreds of color photographs found in this book. It will take you back to that country road, and you will almost be able to hear the sound of that round engine making an honest day's work.

Book Description
UV radiation is an important part in the electromagnetic spectrum since the energy of the photons is great enough to produce important chemical reactions in the atmospheres of planets and satellites of our Solar System, thereby affecting the transmission of this radiation to the ground and its physical properties. Scientists have used different techniques (balloons and rockets) to access to the information contained in this radiation, but the pioneering of this new frontier has not been free of dangers. The Sun is our main source of UV radiation and its description occupies the first two chapters of the book. The Earth is the only known location where life exists in a planetary system and therefore where the interaction of living organism with UV radiation can be tested through different epochs and on distinct species. The development of the human technology has affected the natural shield of ozone that protects complex lifeforms against damaging UV irradiation. The formation of the ozone hole and its consequences are described, together with the possible contribution of UV radiation to recent climate changes. Finally, we will discuss the the potential role of ultraviolet light in the development of life on bodies such as Mars, Europa and Titan. The Solar System is not isolated; other external sources can contribute to the enhancement of the UV radiation in our environment. The influence of such events as nearby supernovae and gamma-ray bursts are described, together with the consequences to terrestrial life from such events.

Book Description
The Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment (SORCE) is a small, free-flying satellite carrying four scientific instruments to measure the solar radiation incident at the top of the Earth’s atmosphere. SORCE was successfully launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on 25 January 2003. As one element of NASA’s Earth Science Enterprise, the SORCE mission is a joint effort between NASA and the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP).
The primary objectives of SORCE are to make daily measurements of Total Solar Irradiance, TSI, and spectral irradiance over almost the entire spectral range from soft X-rays, through the visible, and into the infrared. The SORCE instruments – the Total Irradiance Monitor (TIM), the Spectral Irradiance Monitor (SIM), two Solar Stellar Irradiance Comparison Experiments (SOLSTICE), and the XUV Photometer System (XPS) – are currently measuring the Sun’s total and spectral irradiance with unprecedented accuracy and precision capable of establishing solar variability. In addition to securing a reliable long-term database with which to characterize solar radiative forcing of climate and global change, the SORCE program seeks to foster new understanding of the origins of the solar variations and the physical pathways by which the Earth’s atmosphere, oceans, and land respond on multiple time scales.
This collection of papers describes the SORCE mission, goals, spacecraft, instrument development and calibration, planning software, ground operations, data processing, early science results, and science implications on how the Sun influences Earth’s environment.

Book Description
The variability of the Sun is well established, as well as that of the Earth's climate. To what extent the two are connected, in the sense that solar variability drives climate, is the subject of considerable research and, in some cases, controversy. This volume is aimed at obtaining an overview of the current knowledge of the variability of the Sun and of the Earth's climate, and of their possible connections. It is a collection of introductory and contributed papers presented at an ISSI workshop, supplemented by a summary of the discussion sessions and a workshop, thus giving a coherent overview while still conveying the lively spirit that prevailed at the workshop. The volume is intended to provide the active researcher with an up-to-date status report while at the same time serving the advanced graduate student with introductory material in this field of research.

Book Description
Variations in solar activity, as revealed by variations in the number of sunspots, have been observed since ancient times. To what extent changes in the solar output may affect planetary climates, though, remains today more than ever a subject of controversy. In 2000, the SSSI volume on Solar Variability and Climate reviewed the to-date understanding of the physics of solar variability and of the associated climate response. The present volume on Solar Variability and Planetary Climates provides an overview of recent advances in this field, with particular focus at the Earth's middle and lower atmosphere. The book structure mirrors that of the ISSI workshop held in Bern in June 2005, the collection of invited workshop contributions and of complementary introductory papers synthesizing the current understanding in key research areas such as middle atmospheric processes, stratosphere-troposphere dynamical coupling, tropospheric aerosols chemistry, solar storm influences, solar variability physics, and terrestrial climate analogues.

Description:
Varve thickness measurements and variation in sediment texture have been compiled for an intermittently varved sequence of Holocene sediments at ODP Site 893 in the Santa Barbara Basin (SBB), off California. A varve-based age model is generated from the varve counts, using interpolation across homogeneous intervals. With this age model, the varve thickness and sediment texture time series are compared to published GISP2 stable oxygen isotope and aerosol data as well as to the atmospheric @D^1^4C record. Variation in sediment texture at Site 893 shows the presence of a ~1000 year cycle, which is attributed to fluctuations in the degree of ventilation of the basin. Cross spectral analysis shows that this cycle is coherent with the GISP2 @d^1^8O record and with atmospheric @D^1^4C throughout the Holocene. The correlation with the @D^1^4C record indicates that this ~1000 year cycle is related to solar cycles, which appear to have a noticeable impact especially on circum-North Atlantic climate. The presence of the 1000 year cycle in the SBB is attributed to a tele-connection with the Northern high latitudes, most likely via intermediate water formation in the North Pacific. In contrast, the GISP2 aerosol record and variation in varve thickness at ODP Site 893 show a coherent ~2750 year cycle, which does not correlate with the ~1000 year cycle. Varve thickness in SBB has been shown to correlate with annual rainfall, which occurs mainly during winter when prevailing winds slacken. Both the GISP2 aerosol and SBB varve thickness records are therefore interpreted as a measure for a combination of wind stress and aridity. The correlation is negative, in that thick varves/wet climate in SBB occur during times that the aerosol load is high at GISP2 (dry). The presence of two distinct patterns of millennial scale variation points to regional trends in climate change during the Holocene. However, the fact that both patterns occur at two distant localities suggest that they represent differential behaviour of supra-regional climate systems of which the effects can be traced over large parts of the globe.

Description:
The periodicity of climatic processes in the Barents Sea Region and along the Arctic Ocean coast during several hundred years has been studied by analyzing the tree-ring chronologies for the regions close to the northern timberline. In the Barents Sea region, cyclicities of climatic processes with periods of around 90, 30-35, 22-23, 18 and 11-12 years have been established by spectral analysis of the data for the Kola Peninsula. Wavelet analysis of annual series of conifer tree-rings generalized for 10 regions along the northern timberline, from the Kola Peninsula to Chukotka, for the period 1458-1975 has revealed the same periodicities for the vast areas of northern Russia. Climatic cyclicity with a period of about 35 years is known as the Bruckner cycle. Climatic cycles with periods of around 90, 22-23 and 11-12 years correlate well with the corresponding solar activity cycles. A possible solar forcing of periodic climatic processes and its nonlinear influence on the atmosphere-ocean-continental system are discussed.

Excellent.......2003-06-22
Loved this book. First, the pics are outstanding. Oversided and clear, much better than what you usually find in books. Second, they tell their story very well, including the many close calls. Like the time they had to leave the bay of this small island when a sudden storm came up, and had to quickly make exact mathmatical computations of the channel or they would have been killed. The whole book gives a very good "real time" account of what it was like making the voyage -- the storms, having waves break over your head, seeing the first iceburgs in the convergence zone, being alone in the beauty of Antarctica.
Book Description
This guide to the finer points of boxing provides the wisdom needed to make the transition from enthusiastic beginner to proficient pugilist. The ABCs of ring generalship, offensive and defensive ring movements, feints, and draws and fakes are examined and explained along with clinching techniques, head-hunting, body work, and counter-punching chains. Strategies for boxing against tall and short opponents as well as for a variety of fighting styles such as charger, speed-demon, stick-and-move, and slugger and brawler are discussed in detail. Specific drills focus on sophisticated ring stratagems such as throwing complex combinations, cutting off the ring, fighting off the ropes, generating power, and cornering an opponent are included.

Dont hold your breath.......2007-07-03
I bought this book expecting it to have a lot of new information. If you have spent any time in a boxing gym, you will already know 75% of the book. A few new items and drills. Way too many pictures in my opinion. Need more instruction and a few relevant pictures.
awesome.......2007-01-16
I recommend anything from mark hatmaker, the guy really knows his stuff, and knows how to present it. This is imho the best single volume guide on boxing. Stance, footwork, punches, defense, history, tips, training tips, all covered. His penchant for true boxing of the golden age gives this book that extra charm, in addition to its top notch instruction and information. If youre a fan of boxing, get this , if youre into mma, buy all his books.
complete and concise.......2007-01-06
Very good reference book and does a good job of explaining the key point to every technique.
The perfect book for shadowboxing.......2007-01-04
I have this boxing manual for more than a year now. It's perfect if you tend to shadowbox to work your boxing skills. You get a good workout yet boxing correctly in its format. Perfect manual for novice to advanced boxer. It also goes well with Hatmaker's other manual on Savage Strikes, more of freestyle, NHB fighting. I read this boxing manual numerous times when I have time available and tend to shadowbox as a workout to work on my boxing form and getting my cardio that way. So if you have some boxing skills, whether you've been taught by your dad or mom in some cases or at a boxing gym this book is perfect to go along with your skill to improve boxing. Sweet science at its best.
Great Resource.......2007-01-04
This is an excellent book on the basics of Boxing. It is well written and very detailed. The numerous photos are helpful. I would recomend this book to anyone interested in learning or expanding their boxing.

Leveling the Playing Field in Uncertain Times.......2004-10-11
Early Spanish visitors to the Philippines recorded certain kinds of sorcery being practiced. People attacked their enemies by getting a sorcerer to cast spells that would make the opponents sick. Centuries later, in the 1960s, Lieban found similar activity still very common in the Cebuano-speaking Visayan region of the central Philippines. Despite the impact of the long Spanish rule, several decades of American control, World War II, and the independent Filipino government's efforts to bring modernization, sorcery persisted. Why was this ?
CEBUANO SORCERY may not be long (150pp.), but it is definitely to the point. We not only learn how various sorcerers and witches operate in Cebuano society, and how they view their own role, but also investigate local folk beliefs about illness and health, the involuntary symbiosis between sorcerers and healers (who may be one and the same person), and the relation of sorcery to suspicion, aggression, and social conflict among Cebuanos in both rural and urban areas. Although this study is now almost 40 years old, I found it very relevant. Large numbers of societies in the so-called Third World still have trouble enforcing national law. Many people live outside the sometimes-impartial, but distant court system, relying on more traditional methods of social control. When quarrels arise over land, over love/sex relationships, or because of envy, sorcery---or mere fear in its efficacy---can either prevent violence or help those who feel powerless attain more power. Philippine sorcerers too went into practice to obtain more power in society. Communities in Negros and Cebu back in the early 1960s had modern medical practitioners, but these were often felt to be too far off, too expensive, or too socially distant. People still felt more comfortable going to sorcerers, who also healed clients "attacked" by other sorcerers. Both clients and sorcerers distinguished between "natural" illness and "supernatural" illness, with the later being caused by sorcery. However, a large number of conflicting ideas and beliefs about sorcery existed among the Cebuanos interviewed by the author; there was by no means a unified, airtight concept as to what went on. As is proper in anthropological studies, the author did not discuss whether sorcery actually worked, from an American's point of view. He dealt exclusively with the way Cebuano people looked at it. The conclusion---that belief in and use of sorcery tended to diminish with the rise of new wealth and patterns of consumption, but increase in situations where people feared redistribution of a given size pie---could have raised many questions in the Cold War era when the book came out. Today, it may be taken more as a calm observation. CEBUANO SORCERY combines a terse writing style with clear presentation of data, with a large number of interesting ideas about medical anthropology, Filipino society, and the nexus of sorcery, power, and social conflict. Readers may use it in conjunction with many modern works on Southeast Asia and religion, medical anthropology, or social conflict.
An excellent account of traditional Bisayan sorcery.......1999-06-19
The area of Siquijor and the nearby island of Negros in the middle Philippines is reknown for sorcery. This book was written based on the author's Anthropological studies on sorcery as practiced in the region in the mid-1960s. It describes the different types of sorcery and their practioners and how sorcery is blended into the normal life of the people. It includes many Bisayan (the language of the region) sorcery terms with explanations. The book is detailed but does not give exact instructions on how to perform sorcery.

Though ostensibly written for children, this heroic and heart-wrenching His Dark Materials trilogy is beloved by readers of all ages. These three novels unlock the door to parallel universes where demons and winged creatures live side by side with humans, and a mysterious entity called Dust just might have the power to unite the universes—if it isn't destroyed first. Lyra, Pantalaimon, Will, and the rest embark on the most breathtaking, heartbreaking adventure of their lives. The fate of the universe is in their hands.
Lyra and Will tumble separately into the strange tropical otherworld of Cittàgazze, where adults are curiously absent and children run wild. Their journey is plagued with obstacles, some familiar and some horribly new, but it eventually brings them closer to Will's father and to the Subtle Knife, a deadly, ancient tool that cuts windows between worlds.
