Customer Reviews:
The best treatment planner for school counselors........2007-07-22
As a school counselor/therapist, I find that this planner bridges the divide between school counseling and psychotherapy. It is much more useful in a school setting than the Adolescent Treatment Planner as it is organized by presenting problem rather than DSM diagnosis (e.g. attention-seeking behavior, self-esteem building, sexual responsibility). However,DSM diagnostic suggestions are also included for each presenting problem. Treatment goals and interventions are clearly outlined and practical. Yes, some interventions are obvious, but there are dozens of additional interventions as well. In a school setting where time is limited, this book helps me quickly outline my treatment plan and stay focused so that I am working in a more efficient manner. This book has saved me a lot of time and helped me conceptualize school-based therapy in a more practical way.
Very Helpful.......2007-01-04
This book has been very helpful in coming up with treatment plans for the variety of issues that walk through my door. I don't have the companion of the homework but I think that might be helpful as well.
Some of this stuff just seems so obvious.......2005-11-01
I am a school social worker. I don't use this book very often at all. Maybe that is b/c I don't really "write school treatment plans" for my job. Does anyone? I don't know---it just doesn't seem like most public schools, at least--have specific treatment plans.
The book is quite repetitious and some of the recommendations are just ..well, obvious to me. I prefer the homework planner for the School SW and Counseler. It is more worth the purchase than this book
Ridiculous punctuation/editing errors.......2005-10-25
Did anyone notice how the things reccommended repeat constantly, have the same activity 4 times in the same section, and the fact that the nuumbers are totally out of order?
For example: 1. Plan an activity, 2. discuss feelings, 3.brainstorm supportive people, 2. Discuss feelings, 7.Administer an inventory, 3. Brainstorm with supportive people, 1.Discuss feelings, 19.Go over sheet with student, 7. Administer an inventory.
Everything is out of order and repeated several times. It was so obvious that it made me wonder if anyone edited this book and question the entire book's integrity.
The writers should try and clear up such discrepancies, ecspecially in a 45$ book.
Review.......2005-09-27
This book does an excellent job of presenting the information in easy to use sections. Why reinvent the wheel, I find it a great help.

Book Description
Substance abuse is one of higher education's worst problems not only in terms of financial but also human cost. Drawing upon current theory and research, this handbook arrives at practical solutions to these problems. While there are divergent models of research and practice in substance abuse which have led to competing models of intervention, treatment, and prevention, this book seeks to reconcile those differences. It allows the reader to understand substance abuse from theoretical/research perspectives and guides the reader from conceptualization to programming to intervention with the substance abusing student. The book is divided into three parts. The first deals with ways of conceptualizing substance-abuse and the models which have been the basis for developing intervention strategies. Theories of how substance abuse problems develop are discussed and some suggestions are given as to how these theories may guide prevention, intervention, and treatment. The second part focuses on how one should establish policies and programming on campus, and how these programming and policy decisions can help in prevention strategies. The final part outlines how one can assess, intervene, and provide treatment for a substance abuser. Included here is a chapter on self-help groups and how they may be used in support of treatment and aftercare.

Backyard composting can be almost a religious topic among serious gardeners, so it's no surprise that Smith & Hawken has chosen it for the subject of one of their exceedingly thorough single-subject gardening guides. Composting is for the gardener who likes information to be presented economically but completely. It explains the difference between simple and managed composting, the essential how-tos of each, sources for composting bins and tools, compost problem-solving, and the benefits and use of the rich results (which, if properly managed, can be ready in as little as three weeks), in just over 100 short, readable pages, illustrated with line drawings. A list of compost substitutes and a complete index finish the book off neatly. It's as useful a guide to improving the soil as the home gardener is likely to find anywhere.
Book Description
Composting begins with the least-maintenance method--pile up dead leaves and grass trimmings in a corner of the yard and let nature do its work--and graduates to those methods that require more involvement but also yield greater and faster results. It covers materials suitable for compost; how to achieve the proper balance of carbon, nitrogen, water, and air for fastest decomposition; how to monitor and adjust the pileís heat; as well as common problems and what to do about them.
Customer Reviews:
A really good basic book.......2003-09-13
This book was easy to read, and had very good basic information. It would be great for the first time gardener and/or composter. Recommend!
Ten star book.......2002-02-08
This is a rarity of a book since it doesn't spend a lot of time telling you stuff you don't need to know, but is what it says. A book about the various means of composting whether you live in an apartment or have an acre for an organic vegetable or flower garden.
The illustrations are helpful and easy to follow. And if you think you cant compost or that it will just be to hard, this book will change your mind. It is also an important book in my opinion, because Americans throw away so much useful compost material or grind it down the kitchen garbage disposal. By composting your kitchen and garden wastes you not only produce rich soil but you build up the entire eco system. And with garbage dumps becoming full and new ones harder to find I think that composting of kitchen and garden wastes should be a law.

Book Description
This is a hiking guide to the Paria River drainage of southern Utah. The upper part of the system begins near Bryce Canyon National Park, and flows south to the Colorado River and Lee's Ferry. Lee's Ferry is not far below the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell. Many people have now heard of the hike down the Paria, but there are many less-known and less-visited parts of this drainage included in this book.
This guide covers the entire river system, including a couple of mountain climbs in the far north, plus the dozen or so slot canyons in the middle and lower end. The more famous slot canyons are Bull Valley Gorge, the scene of a pickup wreck (still lodged in the slot) which left 3 hunters dead. Also,Round Valley Draw, the Buckskin Gulch and of course the Paria itself. This 3rd Edition includes for the first time Coyote Buttes and its best know part, The Wave, an international destination for fotographers. For this edition, 16 pages and several new hiking areas have been added, plus the author re-hiked many canyons and updated all of them. This editon has 178 fotographs.
As in previous edtions, the history of early-day ranchers and cattlemen are included. The history of gold miners at Lee's Ferry and around the old ghost town of Pahreah is also discussed. And the best story of all is that of John D. Lee, and his involvement in the Mountain Meadows Massacre (about 120 people were killed), and his life on the run from Federal authorities. It was John D. Lee who was sent by the Mormon Church to the lower end of the Paria River to hide out and build & operate a ferry across the Colorado River. His entire life story is told.

Hiking and Exploring the Paria River.......2007-01-29
Husband wanted book, I ordered it. He likes it.
The Metric distance ruined this book .......2006-05-12
As an American I lived my life of [...] years in feet and miles. I too heard my [...] teacher (nearly 45 years ago) say better get used to metric the US is the last country on the planet not using it and SOON you will have to use it. Never happened! (except for beverage providers who saw an oportunity to give us less product for the same price!) Wilderness hiking can be very dangerous, you need to know where you are, and I can't be pulling a calculator out every page to figure out how far 13.7 meters is!! Otherwise the book is filled with very good information. Pick up a detailed map at the trail head the maps in the book are too small to be of any help.
Comprehensive but dense.......2006-02-23
Got this book in preparation for a trip to the area. It's very comprehensive, but looks like it was laid out with an old fashioned typewrite. Still, if you plan to hike the Paria River, it's definately a good resource..
Worth It's Weight!.......2003-09-23
Found this guide book very helpful in a canyoneering trip down this nice canyon. I read the book before an April 2003 Paria Canyon trip starting at White House Trailhead and going all the way to Lee's Ferry. One thing was missing from my pack though....the book!
My trip I carried the BLM map/travel guide you can purchase at the Paria Ranger Station. It was $8.00 and I had a detailed map with camp sites and all known streams for water. The Kelsey Book has little dots or symbols for the sites which were pretty useless when the maps are so small in print. I was glad on the trip I had the BLM Guide for the trip.
Check the weather forecast before you leave and again at the ranger station. The summer of 2003 in September there were flash floods in the canyon from storms over 40 miles away!
The Paria Ranger Station reports temperatures to the weather service and rain/snow amounts. You will have to go to noaa.gov site for the info. Enter Kanab or Salt Lake City in the today's forecast box and then at the bottom of the forecast page will be additional forecast info - press the forecast discussion. On the new page enter state summary and look on the page for Paria Ranger Station!! There the high and low's will be listed with any precipitation amounts. The ranger station calls in the info every day.
Remember to pack the book for your trip to help you with your travels down this great canyon.
A rare guidebook.......2003-02-12
This book is outstanding. I'm an avid canyoneer and these books got me started. Many think they're too good. I follow the canyoneering boards and people consistently complain that Kelsey gives away too much information and allows, "just anyone who buys the book" to get in the deepest, darkets canyons. The land managers down right hate these books because people get into trouble. I think a good guidebook tells you about an area and it's up to the individual to be responsible and not exceed their abilities.
Aside from the extermely thorough and detailed area information, Kelsey takes pains to explain the history of the area and to prepare you for what you need to do spend time in these strange lands. I have hundreds of guidebooks from around the world and none of them comes close to Kelsey's in these areas. They are a treat to read.
There are a few quirky things about Kelsey's work. He lists everthing in metric. I agree this makes perfect sense from a technical (the rest of the world is metric and it makes much more sense) point of view but still have to do a poor job of converting everything back to miles in my head. It would be better to list miles in brackets after the kilometers. Kelsey is also (apparently) very fit because his hiking times are impressively rapid. I usually add 50% to his times to get a realistic estimate of how long it will take me.
All in all, I couldn't recommend Kelsey's books more. He is an extremely hard working, dedicated author. His works are jewels for this area and will long be recognized as not only the geographical authority but also the historical authority in this wonderful part of the world. Buy everything he writes.

The value is in the details.......1999-11-24
I bought this book to plan my Paria Canyon hike. The detail is astonishing- mileages, detailed maps and where to find water complete with historical information and photos. Every gooseneck and crack is described as well as the geology. The only demerits the author gets are: choosing a poor print font that is difficult to read. Mileages are in kilometers - an annoying mystery as he is a Utah native and the maps are somewhat confusing. I will submit a revised review AFTER my hike.

Complete Idiot's Guide to Horseback Riding........2005-08-12
It was written in an easy to understand style. Information was good and easy to put into practice.
To jbsanderson.......2004-11-09
I read your sentence and it made perfect sense to me. It means that while you are riding in a counterclockwise circle, with the horse's left shouolder on your inside, then your horse should pick up the left lead of the canter, or the inside lead in any case so that it is more comfortable for the horse to go around corners and keep the same steady pace.
I haven't read this book, but apparently it is a beginner's book since the lady said now she knows how to sit a canter. Wow. Well, I've been trained hunter (English riding, jumping full courses) for three and a half years so maybe I won't read it. But for every beginner, my horsey friend said that she has it and that even though she owns a horse herself, she lent it to a newcomer at the barn and everything about her horse skills improved, so beginners buy it and more experienced people...beware.
Simple but effective.......2003-11-13
I think this book was very helpful. I was new to horseback riding and this gave the basic information I needed to know, plus additional information I'll use in the future. If you are new to riding then I think this book will be beneficial for you, too.
Great Book for beginners and Advanced!.......2002-03-05
This book is definately in my book shelf, because it passed my reveiew of being a very helpful horse book! I think that readers would probably have to know a little bit about horses before reading it though. For instance, if they said to pick up your curry comb, people who knew nothing about horses would be like, huh? So, don't go by the title, "The IDIOT'S guide to horseback riding", because it takes a little more than an Idiot to read it. :)
This book contains so much useful information though! After reading Horses for Dummies, I found this book so much better. I don't think I would have been able to ride the canter if it weren't for this book! :)
Read it, and you won't regret it! :)
A dummy had to have written this........2001-03-14
I know very little about horses but apparently I know more than the person who wrote this book. I bought this book to catch up with my wife's riding skills. What a joke. Do not even waste your time or money on this book. Purchase a book from Linda Tellington Jones or John Lyons instead if you really want to learn and understand what you are reading, and be able to apply it to your horse(s) later on.

Customer Reviews:
Not the same as the China guide!.......2003-01-05
A couple of the reviews below complain that the coverage of South-West China was just lifted from Lonely Planet's China guide and this is really misleading. To prove a point, the following destinations are covered only in the SW China book and are not covered at all in the China guide:
YUNNAN - grottoes of Shibaoshan, stone city of Baoshan, Weixi county, Tiger Leaping Gorge trek map, Birang Gorge, Dondrupling monastery, Cizhong Catholic Church, the Nujiang Valley, Menglian, Chengjiang, Jiangchuan, architecture of Jianshui, Gejiu, terraces of Yuanyuang, Luxi Caves
SICHUAN - dinosaurs of Zigong, Yibin, Bamboo Sea, Bo Hanging Coffins, Yi people of Xichang and the Cool Mountains, Tibetan area of Muli, Tibetan monasteries around Tagong and Ganzi, Dzogchen Monastery, Pelpung, Dzongsar and Kathok monasteries around Derge, trekking around Derge, Daocheng and Yading Nature Reserve, Woolong Nature Reserve, Barkham, Wenchuan, Langmusi, Aba
GUIZHOU - Xingren, Miao towns of Leishan, Taijiang, Fanpai, Shidong, Huangping, Shibing, Zhenyuan, Tongren, Fanjing Mt nature Reserve, the Dong settlements of Ronjiang, Congjiang and Zhaoxing, waterfalls and caves of Chishui,
Guangxi - Nanning, Beihai, Chongzuo, Detian Waterfall on the Vietnam border, Jingxi, Baise, Guiping
The bottom line is that if you are planning a trip around China and/or only have a week or two in SW China, then take LP's China. But if you want to get off the beaten track, have more time to explore SW China and/or have an interest in Tibetan monasteries, hilltribe villages and minority nationalities in general, then SW China is DEFINITELY the guide to take.
Much improved.......2002-09-14
The negative comments re the first edition are justified, but for this much better second edition clearly a lot of work has gone into improving the Yunnan section (the bit I can comment on).
This Is The Updated Version 2002.......2002-02-09
This edition will take the traveler beyond the main sites detailed in the China 2000 Lonely Planet. Ignore the other two reviews as they criticize the earlier edition for being out of date. This edition will be very helpful for those exploring the diverse regions of Yunnan and beyond in the Southwest of China.
Nothing New.......2002-02-09
I had been eagerly awaiting the 2002 edition of this guidebook to South West China to help me plan my upcoming trip throughout Sichuan and I was very disappointed. All it did was lift the section on Schuan out of the Lonely Planet "China" guidebook and reprint it. Most of the smaller towns and attractions that I was looking for are not even included. If you have any other decent guidebook of China already, this will be a waste of money.
Don't use this book to plan your trip.......2002-01-27
Published in 1998, Lonely Planet South-West China is essentially the sections for Yunnan, Guangxi, Guizhou and Sichuan from the previous edition of Lonely Planet China (6th Edition), which has been out of print for a while. China is a country that is changing rapidly as a result of these changes the book contains a lot of inaccuracies. For instance, the Kunming-Dali and Kunming-Lijiang travel times mentioned in the book have been cut in half because a highway has been built since publication and has been operational for a couple of years!
This is not a good book to use for planning your trip. The next edition of Lonely Planet South-West China is due out sometime in 2002. Till then you are much better off using Lonely Planet China (7th Edition) that was published in October 2000.
Book Description
Is this the destiny he had come to find?
To die in a house of secrets, to discover
not his past but his fate: doomed to
spend eternity as one more ghost
haunting the halls of Ravenscliff?
Every kid fears the monsters in the closet -- but for Devon March, the monsters are all too real. At fourteen, Devon is sent to live at Ravenscliff, a dark seaside mansion where secrets abound and the dead just won't stay that way. He learns that he is a sorcerer of the Order of the Nightwing, a three-thousand-year-old tradition of mysticism and magic -- the roots of which run deep at Ravenscliff. In a house of mysteries, he'll have to decide quickly who is friend and who is foe, because Ravenscliff's worst nightmare -- the Madman -- is coming back, and he's bringing Hell with him.

It's harder to find in America then in Europe but it is well worth it
Harry Potter but much darker and more riveting.......2005-05-02
Where Harry Potter's world seems magical and inspires every child to write JK Rowling, begging to be admitted to Hogwarts--the same can't be said of Ravenscliff. From page one, the reality of Devon March's world is so nightmarish, that no child or adult would ever want to switch shoes with him. What is Devon's real identity and why are these terrifying things happening to him? This is the question that every reader of Sorcerers of the Nightwing asks him/herself. This book grips you from page one and refuses to let you go until the last page--even then you still can't wait to get your hands on volume 2.
Highly recommended. Give it a try!

Derivative but entertaining.......2004-08-16
The bad news first: this book takes a lot of cues from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." You have the high school sophomore, moving to a new town, discovering their powers as a divinely appointed defender against the supernatural. Instead of Watchers, you have Guardians. Instead of the Hellmouth, you have the Hellhole.
It also takes a lot from "Dark Shadows." You have the windswept house on the cliff in New England. You have the family cannery and fishing fleet. Amanda Crandall is basically DS's Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, down to the errant husband and sexy teenage daughter. Rolfe Montaigne is DS's Burke Devlin. Troubled Alexander is DS's David Collins. The book's hero, Devon March, ends up being a sort of male Vicky Winters, in that he's a companion for Alexander while searching out the mystery of his identity. Simon is a copy of DS's menacing groundskeeper. There's the closed-off wing to the house. There's the ghost who weeps at night.
But...the book has a narrative verve that keeps it going. There are some quite original shudders and some interesting characterization. A lot of the book's younger readers will probably spot the Buffy elements but miss the Dark Shadows elements, so they probably won't mind as much as an adult will.
It is profoundly derivative, but the author has potential.
