Pretty good, but do you really need to read a book to figure this out?.......2007-03-10

This is one of two textbooks assigned for me in my management of engineering teams class. Overall, I would say that this is a good book with a lot of useful information on managing virtual teams. However, I think that managing virtual teams is not too different from managing regular teams. Sure there are some technology issues you have to consider and different team norms, but the delta between managing virtual and conventional teams is really not that large. I do not think you need a book dedicated to explaining this delta. But overall this is a good read.

Another Human Resource Book with no Business case.......2001-11-03

I was disappointed by the lack of real world examples. Most of the examples were "human resource groups". Now, to be sure, there are many really fine checklists for managers included in this book. Although they are basic, most managers find them useful and thought provoking.
Unfortunately, as with most books on virtual teams, the authors have not focused on the critical operations which use virtual teaming: marketing, sales, program/project management. This book also neglects to leave the reader with a future focus --like: what is the new work and how will the businesses have to 'virtually' restructure or lose the "command and control" model of management.

Not great prose, but thorough coverage.......2001-03-27

Duarte and Synder provide thorough coverage of the tools and techniques required for effective use of virtual teams. The writing style is basic, here's-what-to-do stuff, offering 'x' critical success factors, abundant check lists, and tables comparing alternatives, such as video or electronic displays. From my experience, they are right on target for team leaders and team members.

Interspersed are jewels of wisdom. For example: communication and collaboration are the two most important factors in team success; sometimes it's better to wait until team members get to know one another as dependable and competent before initiating in-depth team building; trust depends on performance and competence, integrity, and concern for the well-being of others; information overload can slow down a team's decision-making process. I was pleased to find they documented that video conferencing requires a different skill set than running regular meetings.

I sometimes yearned for more real life stories and persuasive arguments, in other words, a less formulaic style. But that's my bias as a reader and not their intent.

Excellent overview of technology and techniques.......1999-08-03

The authors provide an excellent treatment of the problems associated with starting and maintaining virtual teams. An excellent concise presentation of working with differences in culture is presented. Many technology alternatives to facilitate group interaction and collaboration are also presented. The strengths and weaknesses of each technology are given for several different problem solving situations. I would recommend this book to anyone who must solve problems with others who are off site.

Great balance of high level strategy detailed operations........1999-05-21

The authors do a fantastic job of giving good high level strategy while giving useful detailed operational information.I have already found the content useful in my global virtual teaming.

This is an esssential book to uncover the facts behind the validity of the Global warming concerns and possible impact of humans on this possible effect. It is an essential if you care about the facts.

This is not a book for those who embrace the religion of Secular Humanism, as they will not want to encounter any facts that might conflict with their pre-determined religious beliefs.

If you want your concerns and sacrifices to be aligned with any sort of fact and reality, you must read this to round out your education, and off-set the distortions of a media that have decided, with no scientific knowledge, that this religion is true and must be defended against all facts.

Read it and decide for yourself, if you can think independently.

The book's editor, Ronald Bailey, came out on Sept 22, 2006 in ReasonOnline to explain that the global warming conclusions in his own book are false. According to Mr. Bailey:

"In 2002 came Global Warming and Other Eco-Myths (Prima Publishing). The global warming contributor was University of Alabama at Huntsville climatologist John Christy.... In August 2005, Science magazine published [findings] that Christy and Spencer had failed to take proper account of satellite drift, which produced a spurious cooling trend to their dataset....

"On the day that the studies were released I wrote a column for Reason in which I declared that my skepticism of man-made global warming was at an end."

Rather than debunking eco-myths, this book perpetuates them. Ouch.

Since I cannot respond to all the reviewers pretending to be "climatologists" or engineers using the same tired intimidation techniques of anyone who questions global warming is a shill for the oil co.s or desperate and trasparent arguments from authority, I will respond here.

Shell and BP (rechristened "Beyond Petroleum") are among the biggest contributors to global warming activism! It gives them an edge over unrepentent companies like Exxon for one! Environmentalism is now a huge industry itself, $4 biliion a year in the US and $8 billion yearly world wide. Moreover this industrial Gorilla is not beholden to things that "evil corporations" are, like accountability and tranparency.

One of the best books on Shaolin Kung Fu.......2007-05-13

I am a student of Shaolin Kung Fu and have regular classes with our Shifu. This book clarified issues I had questions about and brought up new areas of learning that Shifu hadn't covered, particularly about chi power and focusing energy. Once mentioning the topics from the book in class, we went into new and exciting areas of kung fu that were deeper and more powerful. The author is also a well known expert on Shaolin Kung Fu, so he speaks from vast experience. He strives to help the student in a clear and comprrehensive way. It's my favorite of the thirty or so books I have on Kung Fu. I would highly recommend it to other students.

This book is one of my favorites! My copy is old now and the pages are underlined and bent from reading and re reading this book. The book gives one more than enough reading materiel to practice and think about! If you don't have a school near by or good teachers, Mr. Kit gives you more than enough information to begin practice. To this day, I'm fortysix years old, I practice the Shaolin eight exercises Mr. Kit explains in his book for exercise! I have also emailed him to ask him questions and he actually took time to write back and comment on what I should focus on in my practice. I enjoyed this book so much I bought all his other books!

A good fiction type book being sold as a reference on Martial arts or Kung Fu.......2006-08-28

This book is a good pictorial representation of some of the concepts of some of the Chinese Martial arts. Not necessarily Kung Fu - Least Shaolin Kung Fu.

It is refreshing and entertaining to read the material with accompanying pictures as a fictional novel. But as far as the knowledge on Kung Fu or Martial Arts is concerned it has very very little to offer in that area. The book is written in good and simple English. However it lacks the scientific approach, the thoroughness and completeness required for any Martial Arts or Kung Fu reference book. In fact the book does not have even 1 % knowlege on the traditional Shaolin Kung Fu ! The book tries to demonstrate a lot of techniques as Kung Fu techniques but their overall applicability from this book is only fictional (not real). For a serious martial arts student or a Shaolin Kung Fu seeker the book is of a very little value.

There are many good kung fu books, however, this isn't one of them.

If you think the book is interesting, it may be because the lack of knowledge you have about martial arts. Try beating a street fighter with those movements and see what happens.

On one of his web sites, Wong Kiew kit advice how to beat a boxer by using two Shaolin Kung Fu patterns, the supposed boxer throws some passive punches, then Wong Kiew Kit beats him by constantly repeating two patterns until the boxer is beaten. This is a weed-smoke fantasy, a boxer would bravely come over you throwing a bunch of direct, jab and uppercut punches until you fall unconscious, as well as a street fighter.

You won't be able to defend yourself with the movements in this book, overall, you can't learn to fight from a book, you need to constantly practice your defenses and attacks in order to make them unconscious reactions, you can't think: "oh, I need to use the mirror pattern" when you are in the middle of a fight, you need unconscious reactions.

In this publication, Wong Kiew Kit himself says that you can not learn to fight from a book.

Also, the author is incompetent to remark how dangerous it may be to apply the pattern named "poisonous snake shoots venom". Someone without previous martial arts knowledge may think it's okay to use that as an attack, apparently it is just "one more attack" listed in the book, however, someone can get into big trouble or can even hurt (if not kill) a friend because of the author's incompetence to explain how dangerous a strike on the neck can be.

Hauntingly Beautiful..........2006-02-24

I had to lower the rating on this book, not because it wasn't a good story (it's a very beautiful, poignant one) or because of the style of the writing (the book is written in free verse). I did it because, after buying a hardcover book, it took me fifteen minutes to read it.

Cassie Devlin lived a pretty good life--a loving mother, friends at school, a wonderful boyfriend named Kyle, outstanding ability to write music and play the piano, and a group of like-wise minded musical players at school called Composer's Workshop. Everything was wonderful, until Gail Sherman entered and world and, ultimately, ended her life.

DEAD ON TOWN LINE is a hauntingly beautiful story, tellling the story of Cassie's death and how she realizes that being dead doesn't mean you're finished with things here on Earth. She meets another young girl like herself there in the in-between, and together they work to right the wrongs that have been done to them.

This was really quick read, reminiscent of Lovely Bones and The Bright Forever with it's murdered child themes. Creative format made this really interesting, I liked the imagery of leaves and music and their incorporation into the plot. I do not think that the format is very teen friendly, but this is well written, interesting book. Good Read.

Beautiful and haunting.......2005-08-25

Leslie Connor's novel in free verse unfolds with such a skillful telling of this haunting tale. I felt chills as I read it. There are images that will always stay with me: Cassie, the dead girl, learning that she can move a leaf with her mind; the heartbreaking sadness of seeing her mother weeping over the piano; and the connection that Cassie makes with Birdie, who died so long ago and teaches her about the unseen world. Despite being about someone so young who has died, this novel is not about despair. Connor has managed to write a story that is uplifting and filled with the joy of living. My daughters and I could not stop talking about this story!

Poignant, memorable, and hard to put down.......2005-06-29

In this story told in free verse, the reader begins with the chilling revelation that the 16-year-old narrator, Cassie, is dead. She watches the dogs search for her, but her body is well hidden. She recollects, bit by bit, the details of her murder. As the searchers walk the grid looking for clues to her disappearance, Cassie muses about her associations with them. She worries over the loved ones she's left behind, particularly her mother and her boyfriend, Kyle. Cassie also recalls uncomfortable interactions with the needy and mean Gail Sherman, now walking the grid. Then Cassie poignantly remembers her choice to delay making love with Kyle because she felt they had all the time in the world. Now that chance is forever gone.

Cassie realizes that she can't leave yet to go on to what's beyond; she still has something she must do here first. She contemplates death as well as some surprises --- such as her sudden knowledge that she can affect matter by swaying tree branches or tumbling a leaf. However, her biggest revelation is that she's not alone. Another dead girl, Birdie, keeps Cassie company as they share stories about their lives. Birdie, too, feels that she can't quite leave for the next world.

DEAD ON TOWN LINE invites comparisons with THE LOVELY BONES in subject matter, and yet is completely unlike it in style. The verses are spare and lovely, depicting Cassie's love for music and despair over her many losses. Some of the images, of murder and of what happens to a body after death, are fleetingly brutal but appropriate. The depiction of Cassie's death is heartbreaking and chilling, yet leaves the reader with an uplifting hope. It was impossible to stop reading Cassie's highly original story, and I found the ending to be poignant and memorable.
