Product Description
"Dr. Ferguson succeeds in advancing significantly our understanding of how to bring the spiritual side of our lives to the office on a daily basis. She shows, irrespective of one's particular religious credo, how to tap that often neglected side of one's persona and how to be a complete person. Her objective, besides increasing one's personal fulfillment, is to craft organizations with higher consciousness-firms that attend to all those they reach (customers, employees, stockholders, etc.) as people, not as objects. Dr. Ferguson lays out practical steps to achieve this.
I applaud Dr. Ferguson for addressing this important topic, and I commend her for the progress she has been able to achieve in helping organizations and individuals to more fully realize the spiritual side of their lives, their actions, and the impacts they have on others. I feel energized and excited reading her book, and I can't wait to put some of her suggestions to use in my daily life."
Customer Reviews:
No matter where you are, you can enjoy your work.......2004-07-28
In an extremely uplifting manner, I felt Dr. Linda Ferguson guiding me toward a path for greatness by encouraging me to find a way to live and work in a sacred way. "Working spiritually," as she states, "involves seeing our tasks and daily interactions as an opportunity to proclaim the divine within us and beyond us. It is in the fulfillment of ourselves in our work that we find and serve God." Rarely does it seem that people look upon their jobs with the joy she describes we can achieve if we focus on doing our work in a manner to serve a higher good. She presents the material in a very readable and flowing style calling on a personal wisdom that is contagious.
I really appreciated her efforts in drawing together spirituality and work. The Puritan work ethic she describes is one that was instilled in me. That in itself created a blindness that prevented me from recognizing that there could be something different. Fortunately, I was raised Quaker and that seemed to soften the apparent harsh difference between spirituality and work, though it was still present. I would love to see the model she presents be the one that replaces the Puritan work ethic!
I also appreciated the thoughtfulness and care that she used in presenting many different faiths and ways of being. In a working environment chances are one works with many different people. She excludes no one.
I've always been blessed to recognize opportunity when it is presented to me and am a firm believer that I am being guided along the way learning what I need for the next step. Coming across her book at this time was intentional, I'm sure. I was becoming overwhelmed with state of certain events in our country and the war. Her book reminded me of the balance that there is.
I was very encouraged with her work with organizations. The 3 non-profit organizations I have been involved with could have clearly benefited from her book. The work that she is doing is incredibly valuable in providing the clarity I believe, so many are seeking. The exercises at the end of the chapters with suggested opportunities for retreats and seminars are clearly the steps to be taken in achieving a path for greatness through work as spiritual service. How wonderful it would be if everyone practiced the principles outlined in this book. Her book made an incredibly strong impact on me. It helped my re-examine my work with clarity and intention that has changed my life. I have recommended her book to several organizations as well as personal friends and I recommend her book to anyone who questions their purpose in life.

great book full of imformation.......2005-09-22
this book is great for future landscapers or someone that wants to know more about plants. Its a great buy.
Herbaceous Ornamental Plants.......2001-12-28
Enormous book, excellent coverage. Black and white, limited color prints in special section. For each species complete data are given on usage, growth habit, season of bloom, culture, propagation, and diseases. Includes notes on many cultivars, although a bit dated now (1994 revision). This is where I go first for information on perennials. An example of a book which goes for information rather than looking pretty. Used as a textbook in college horticulture courses.
The Best.......1999-06-14
As an employee of a prominent local retailer of perennials, I find this book essential in identifying the plants our customers are seeking. A few descriptive words or a common name and we are well on our way to knowing what the plant was that "Aunt Millie" had in her garden. A gem of a book.
excellent, concise descriptiions of annuals and perennials.......1999-01-31
I have used this book as a textbook in Floriculture classes for the last 2 years and find that the brief, concise descriptions are more than sufficient for classroom instruction,as well as field use. Could have better (and more) color pictures, but I still give it 5 stars.

Book Description
Early in the 1920s, the New York Giants sent a scout to watch a young Cuban play for Foster's American Giants, a baseball club in the Negro Leagues. During one at-bat this talented slugger lined a ball so hard that the rightfielder was able to play it off the top of the fence and throw Christobel Torrienti out at first base. The scout liked what he saw, but was disappointed in the player's appearance. "He was a light brown," recalled one of Torrienti's teammates, "and would have gone up to the major leagues, but he had real rough hair." Such was life behind the color line, the unofficial boundary that prevented hundreds of star-quality athletes from playing big-league baseball. When Only the Ball Was White was first published in 1970, Satchel Paige had not yet been inducted into the Hall of Fame and there was a general ignorance even among sports enthusiasts of the rich tradition of the Negro Leagues. Few knew that during the 1930s and '40s outstanding black teams were playing regularly in Yankee Stadium and Brooklyn's Ebbets Field. And names like Cool Papa Bell, Rube Foster, Judy Johnson, Biz Mackey, and Buck Leonard would bring no flash of smiling recognition to the fan's face, even though many of these men could easily have played alongside Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Hack Wilson, Lou Gehrig--and shattered their records in the process. Many baseball pundits now believe, for example, that had Josh Gibson played in the major leagues, he would have surpassed Babe Ruth's 714 home runs before Hank Aaron had even hit his first. And the great Dizzy Dean acknowledged that the best pitcher he had ever seen was not Lefty Grove or Carl Hubbell, but rather "old Satchel Paige, that big lanky colored boy." In Only the Ball Was White, Robert Peterson tells the forgotten story of these excluded ballplayers, and gives them the recognition they were so long denied. Reconstructing the old Negro Leagues from contemporary sports publications, accounts of games in the black press, and through interviews with the men who actually played the game, Peterson brings to life the fascinating period that stretched from shortly after the Civil War to the signing of Jackie Robinson in 1947. We watch as the New York Black Yankees and the Philadelphia Crawfords take the field, look on as the East-West All-Star lineups are announced, and listen as the players themselves tell of the struggle and glory that was black baseball. In addition to these vivid accounts, Peterson includes yearly Negro League standings and an all-time register of players and officials, making the book a treasure trove of baseball information and lore. A monumental and poignant book, Only the Ball Was White reminds us that what was often considered the "Golden Age" of baseball was also the era of Jim Crow. It is a book that must be read by anyone hoping not only to understand the story of baseball, but the story of America.
Customer Reviews:
A Monumental Journey Into The Forgotten History Of NLB.......2007-02-07
"Negro baseball," writes Robert W. Peterson, "was both a gladsome thing and a blot on America's conscience."
And in that one sentence, Peterson defines the glory of Negro Leagues baseball and how it also magnified the sordid race hatred of this nation, with the ramifications still being felt today.
When the book was published in 1970, the Negro Leagues was not really known by a whiter (oops, I mean "wider") audience. Peterson, who had a journalism background as an editor for the New York World-Telegram and The Sun, set out on this journey in 1966 by interviewing players, studying microfilm of black newspapers and delving into game accounts & features in sporting publications.
He traces the history of some of the greatest players and teams ever in the game from post-Civil War to 1947. Along with a history highlighted through extensive interviews are a recap of yearly standings and a register of players and league/team officials.
Names such as Cool Papa Bell, Judy Johnson, Buck Leonard and Rube Foster & teams like the Kansas City Monarchs, Cleveland Buckeyes and Pittsburgh Crawfords come to life and opened a door to a wealth of research into NLB that continues today.
Peterson, who passed away in February 2006 at the age of 80, was on a 2006 committee that selected players/executives from NLB and the pre-NLB era for baseball's Hall of Fame. His ballot was filled out before his death and used in the vote.
It can't be forgotten that NLB welcomed whites and women on the field of play, in the grandstands and in the front offices. Truly, Peterson shows in Only the Ball Was White that there were no rear entrances, separate facilities and racial hatred in Negro Leagues Baseball. The book will never lose its standing as a true beacon to a history that must never again be forgotten.
Wonderful Book.......2007-01-27
I consider myself a self-educated baseball historian, but had very little knowledge of the Negro Leagues - until I read this book. It's a wonderful introduction to the proud but sad history of the African American experience in baseball in the first half of the 20th century. I now have a strong working knowledge of the dominent personalities of the Negro Leagues and its many extraodinary athletes - many of whom would have been certain stars in the Majors.
As I read it, I kept thinking to myself what a tragedy it was that these great black ballplayers were barred from the Major Leagues. How different the game would have been. Cool Papa Bell - maybe the fastest man ever to play the game. Satchel Paige - one of the greatest pitchers of all time, black or white. Josh Gibson - the Babe Ruth of the Negro Leagues. Pop Lloyd - the Black Honus Wagner.
It's a overwhelmingly sad chapter in American history for sure; but it's also a compelling story of perseverence and dedication that allowed the Negro Leagues to succeed for so long in the face of incredible obstacles. If you love baseball history, do yourself a favor and read this book. Your baseball knowledge will not be complete without an understanding of the Negro Leagues.
Oh, what a game........2006-05-21
Robert Peterson originally published this book in 1970 so it's really the original and standard history of the Negro Leagues. Peterson not only tells the history of these leagues and some of the great players, but also provides brief biographical sketches of dozens of players whose big league service would otherwise be lost to history. The book also has extensive appendices with annual standings and box scores of all-star games. The book gives us glimpses into Jim Crow America (and it was not just in the South).
Peterson portrays the often overlooked fact that the Negro Leagues were a business venture run almost exclusively by and for black people. And it was a tough business at that, but one that drew often sizeable crowds, especially on exciting and exhausting barnstorming tours. The Negro Leagues could not survive integration as its best players were siphoned off to the 'majors'. Despite the obvious benefits to those men who were finally broke through the wall of prejudice, the reader also understands that there was a sense of loss when the leagues shut down in 1960. More powerfully, the reader experiences the lost opportunities suffered by those players who never got the chance to play in the majors and make major league money, like Jimmie Crutchfield, the Black Lloyd Waner, who barely made a living on one side of Pittsburgh playing for the Crawfords while Waner hauled down $12,000 a year (a princely sum at the time) playing for the Pirates.
A must read for anyone interested in baseball, race relations, or American history.
Very Well Researched and tied together........2003-11-10
This book was not what I thought it would be. Its part stat book, part biography, part history of the leagues. It is not as story-like as I expected and seems a bit fractured in places. Having said that, its a wonderful book that conveys a lot of the zeitgeist of the time. For a book with so many facts, it is surprisingly easy to read. Though, at times it seems to repeat itself, it still conjures up an age when African American players wore their caps sideways, introduced stealing bases on a regular basis etc... It is a shame that so many sad periods in world history become fascinating periods to read about for generations that follow after. Educational, entertaining and solidly researhed, bravo!
Out of the Shadows, Into the Light.......2000-09-15
Most baseball fans are familiar with the great names and stories that emanated from the Negro Leagues. Satchel Paige, ever the showman, often asked his fielders to sit down while he struck out a dangerous hitter; Cool Papa Bell was so fast that he could blow out a candle and be in bed before the room got dark; and Josh Gibson may or may not have hit a ball completely out of Yankee Stadium. Peterson includes these gems and much more in this incredibly in depth history of the Negro Leagues. He chronicles the history of the black ballplayer, beginning with those few who actually played in the major leagues during the tail end of the nineteenth century, before the doors were closed, and continuing into the 40's and 50's, when Jackie Robinson's arrival in Brooklyn led to the demise of the Negro Leagues. Peterson relies almost exclusively on first-hand accounts culled from the black press of the day and extensive interviews from players and coaches. Also included is an appendix filled with year by year standings and an alphabetical listing of Negro League players. Certainly, this book is invalueable to anyone interested in learning about the unknown greats from the Negro Leagues.

Chilling Tales and Practical Advice.......2005-10-11
In 1992 Richard Felix opened a Heritage Centre in Derby, England. Thus began his legendary ghost walks, and Felix rapidly became one of Britain's foremost ghost hunters and experts on the paranormal. Within 12 years more than 150,000 people from all over the world had booked in to the tours. As Felix himself avuncularly writes: "... I was raised in a haunted house [so] you will forgive me for having well formed ideas about the existence of ghosts."
His books are fascinating and informative. Each site in South Wales is described with historical background, photos, anecdotal evidence, and both subjective and objective investigative findings. Chilling tales of hauntings are interspersed with practical tips of details and equipment one needs to detect paranormal activities on ones own. This work is sure to please anyone who has caught the ghost-hunting bug.
Richard Felix is well published in the U.K., and can currently be seen in the States on the television show Most Haunted, broadcast on the Travel Channel, where he functions as historian on what is arguably the best ghost hunting show ever filmed. I for one have to date been importing his books, so am thrilled he is venturing into the U.S. market.
Book Description
Where Rivers and Mountains Sing takes readers on a journey through the rich sonic world of inner Asia, where the elemental energies of wind, water, and echo, the ubiquitous presence of birds and animals, and the legendary feats of heroes have inspired a remarkable art and technology of sound-making among nomadic pastoralists. For inner Asian pastoralists, sound and music form part of a spiritual relationship with the natural environment that has endured in the face of formidable social and political challenges. As performers from Tuva and other parts of inner Asia have responded to the growing worldwide popularity of their music, Levin follows them to the West, describing their soul-searching efforts to nourish global connections while preserving the power and poignancy of their music tradition. Includes a combination video DVD and music CD to acquaint readers with the musicians and their music.
Customer Reviews:
Listening with New Ears.......2006-12-27
The ethnographer author of The Hundred Thousand Fools of God, who took us on a musical journey to Uzbekistan, truly enters new sonic territory with this account of traditional and developing Tuvan musical arts, including his fostering (as executive producer) of the group Huun-Huur-Tu. More than associating the various forms of throat singing with ambient environmental sounds, Tuvan music is based on timbre, not pitch, on relative intervals, not absolutes. Such a radical alteration of musical perspective requires new ways of listening, and here Levin helps us with a most interesting and well-written book and CD and, on the flip side of the disk, DVD. Instead of a deadly tedious textbook with some artificial, meaningless taxonomy and pages of scores, we are presented with a fascinating, lucid exploration that made me re-listen to my collection of Tuvan and Manchurian music with more appreciation and understanding. This book expanded my mind.
Informative but tedious.......2006-06-18
The DVD/CD that accompanies this book is outstaning, even though about half of the DVD's content is comprised of scenes of ambient noise from rivers, drives along California freeways and the like, there are tremendous performances of Tuvan vocal and instrumental music.
The book is highly informative, but too frequently reads like a scholarly treatise, following questionably relevant tangents at the expense of the core subject matter. Levin has admirably dedicated his professional life to bringing Central Asian music to the attention of Westerners, but his work suffers because he is more of a professor than an author. When Levin sticks to Tuva, Tuvans and Tuvan music, a lot of light is shed, but the portions of the book on mimesis, mimicry and immitation, ammong others, remind me too much of my university musicology days where I'd have to struggle in inventing something, ANYTHING, to fill up the pages on that term paper. Parts of the book unfortunately read like that and go beyond the scope of what I wanted to know about Central Asian music. Nonetheless, between those gaps lies everything I wanted to know about the music, so in that sense, the book was worthwhile.
Customer Reviews:
Good this one was.......2002-06-15
This book will tear you apart and put you back together again. It opens where the first book, How Green Was My Valley, opened- Huw packing up to leave his valley in Wales. But rather than a long flashback, we go forward in his life from there- on to Patagonia, Argentina, with a Welsh expatriate community, but mostly from composed of those *other* people, the North Welsh. Huw moves into town as a boarder, starts up his carpentry business, sorely needed after a great flood in the year prior, and meets a beautiful woman, Lal. He then faces similar problems to his life growing up- nature's wrath, and man's evil- gossip.
Llewellyn does an amazing job of characterization, so that we as the readers really care for the characters, move for them, and feel that we are right there with them. He describes without describing, and Welsh Patagonia comes to life before us. I eagerly look forward to the third in the series of four, Down Where the Moon is Small. Up Into the Singing Mountain is a complete story in it's own right, but leaves much room for a sequel. However, I could not give the book five stars, for two reasons, which diverge from the first book. Llewellyn uses stronger Welsh dialect at times and his scene changes become confusing, so that there were many places wherein I didn't know what was happening, and even when I reread a section, couldn't make sense of it. Also, there were times, especially in the first half of the book, where I couldn't support Huw. In the first book, I could identify with him, even when he made mistakes. Here, there are times when Huw seems rather mean, and is difficult to relate to. He justifies himself when a naked woman is in his bed that he is a man, and so makes love to her, because no man could refuse. This is simply untrue, and difficult to relate to. But Huw's character picks up in the second half, and this is perhaps why it is then when the reader's heart is wretched and then poured out in hope.

Waley Still Hip & Cool In the New Millennium!.......2003-11-22
What a great book! Starts out with anecdotes of friends and acquaintances of Waley's, giving a fascinating picture of a very original person. In his book "The Dharma Bums", Jack Kerouac refers to some of the poems Waley translated (which were also translated by beat poet Gary Snyder) but if you read some of Waley's translations, which appear in the second half of the book, nothing can beat them -- the poems seem as though they were written yesterday, not thousands of years ago. It's a grand culture trip to discover Arthur Waley, a member of the famous Bloomsbury Group who taught himself Chinese and Japanese and translated some of their finest ancient works with the delicacy and sensibility of a true poet. If this book turns you on to the beautiful culture, art and poetry of ancient Japan and China, you'll be on the road to some amazing discoveries, for it'll make you want to read more and learn more, and what you learn will illuminate the strange and crazy times we are living through here and now in the new millennium. I highly recommend this book.

Discover how amazing the Northwest natural world really is with these uncommon field guides.
Customer Reviews:
Uncommonly delightful.......2006-08-13
All 3 of Lichen's "Uncommon Field Guide" series are uncommonly delightful to poke into. One can read them chapter-by-chapter or just open the book anywhere and delve in. Even if it is an animal or plant you are familiar with, there is a good likelihood that you will discover something new about it in her description. Reading the books is somewhat like the joy of discovering an animal or plant for the first time or in an unexpected place. My only complaint is that there is not one of Feltner's detailed illustrations with every single chapter.
River-Walking Songbirds and Singing Coyotes.......2001-08-02
Pat Lichen weaves fascinating scientific information with humor, personal experience, and heartfelt tenderness for the natural world. Linda Feltner's drawings gently accentuate the essays. I'd recommend all three of Lichen's books: River-Walking Songbirds and Singing coyotes, Brittle Stars and Mudbugs, and Passionate Slugs and Hollywood Frogs as good reading and good reference for any household in the Pacific Northwest.
Charming & informative.......2001-08-02
Made me want to go straight out for a hike in the mountains! Now I know a lot more about the plants and animals out there!
Fun book!.......2001-07-29
This book was great fun to read! I especially liked the author's sense of humor and obvious connection to the natural world. Interesting details about how different plant and animal species live their lives.
