Hire for Fit : Select the Best Executive for Your Organization
Don Andersson Manufacturer: OakHill Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1886939454 |
Book Description
Business headlines tout the fact that we currently have the lowest unemployment rates in nearly half a century. This is wonderful news for employees who are in jobs they enjoy. It may even be better news for those who are unhappily employed because there are more jobs than there are qualified people to fill them.Unfortunately, it isn't such wonderful new for employers. Only a decade ago it was a buyers' market for employees. There were more qualified employees than there were available jobs. For the foreseeable future, it is a sellers' market. The booming economy has produced new jobs at a greater rate than it has produced qualified applicants.
What does this mean? It means it's tough to find the right corporate leaders. Every hiring decision becomes more critical for these positions. Placing the wrong individual in a job can be costly, aggravating, and even disastrous in certain situations.
As a consultant to large and small businesses and organizations nationwide, Don Andersson has discovered that mis-hires are a more common problem than people realize. In "Hire for Fit," Don Andersson explores this critically important issue and then provides proven plans of action to solve it.
Every CEO, president, executive, and manager with hiring responsibilities should read "Hire for Fit" and implement its ideas, plans, and strategies. Her or his investment in purchasing and reading this book will be compounded by savings in time, energy, resources, aggravation, and money.
Executives searching for a new position will also benefit from reading "Hire for Fit." They will learn what they must know to avoid running through a gauntlet of jobs that are wrong for them. As the cover of the book depicts, when forced into a wrong position, pegs (and professionals) risk being splintered.
As one executive said, Hire for Fit" offers all the right advice.

The Hiring Answer Every Manager Needs.......2001-04-18
The text is very readable. The clever chapter titles add a dash of seasoning and the illustrations are obviously drawn out of real-life experience. It's clear throughout that Don Andersson has "walked his talk." A CEO's voice rings through loud and clear and gives an authenticity that can't be duplicated without hands-on experience.
It was especially interesting find out why it's so difficult for older executives to start over in a new environment. Don Andersson puts his finger on the why - along with explaining what to do and how to do it. "What Does Clarence Think?" ought to be taught in every leadership seminar. And Chapter 24, "The Productive Entrance Strategy", A Resource for Success," should be required reading for every manager. This book synthesizes everything we have known, suspected, wondered about and ignored into an easy-to-follow guide to hiring the right person.
It's especially valuable that Hire for Fit is as valid for the new employee as it is for the employer. I can think of six colleagues who need to read it right now - and dozens who would have benefited from it over the years. Those of us who've survived the awkward ages and emerged wiser - if grayer - have long needed this guidebook for hiring into the new corporate environments.
Hire for Fit.......2001-04-03
Senior managers are often too fast to hire and ultimately too slow to fire, spending enormous sums on training programs just to get their new hires up to speed. I'm not suggesting we shouldn't be supportive. However, "hiring for fit" is simply a better investment.
In Hire for Fit Don Andersson presents a clear and understandable template to be followed if "world class" managers are to be identified and hired. The case is made wonderfully in his "What You've Inherited" and "Growing Awareness" Sections. In his "Invitation to Action" we are then given practical insight as to how to implement a hiring process to enhance business performance. Calling them the four "fit factors" Andersson describes what we often overlook in hiring someone to fill a key slot - and it's that oversight that, without intention, sets our new hire up to fail.
It is clear to me the time invested in developing my company's fit factors and then applying them during the hiring process is time well spent. On the other hand I worry about my managers involved in the hiring process becoming fatigued, taking shortcuts and ultimately compromising on an "almost good fit."
In his "Support Success" section we get a solid reminder how much more we could benefit from our orientation process if we would be more intentional. Finally the book presents us with a step by step process for making hires that are right for our organization in its concluding section THE PRODUCTIVE ENTRANCE STRATEGY ®. If done well there is a reasonable chance for a good hire. If not completed accurately, only disappointment can follow.
There are many "how to" books on writing job specifications, interview techniques, advertising for candidates, etc. But this is the first putting it all in context of "how to" hire for a world class organization. I've read dozens of books (all published in the last 20 years) on creating "High performance organizations" or managing for peak performance, but I have not yet seen a truly significant business improvement without successful new hires at key executive positions.
No manager should have the excuse that Hire for Fit does not pertain to her or him. It's a breakthrough in understanding and using the screening and selection process to build a world class organization.

The Land Was Theirs: Jewish Farmers in the Garden State........1999-12-21
Between 1880 and the Second World War, tens of thousands of Jews set up farms in southern and central New Jersey. The adventurous Jews, most of whom were recent immigrants, set up private farms but also established cooperatives and unions to help one another. They lived in tight-knit communities based on ethnic identity and often ideology. "The Land Was Theirs" focuses on Farmingdale , NJ, where Dubrovsky grew up but is also a rigourously researched history of farming in the entire state. The introduction includes what is one of the best essays on Jewish farming in the entire country. A must for anyone interested in this overlooked part of American Jewish history.

Steve Urwin the crocodile hunter.......2001-02-23
The book I read was called Crocodile Hunter. I would probably rate this book a four star book. The reason I would rate this book at such a high rating is because this book was very hard to put down because there was never any boring parts. The author kept the story very interesting through out the whole story. Some of the words in the story were really big words and from time to time I had to look up some of the words. Right from the start the story got right to the point and that made it a lot better than some of the other books that I had read. One thing I thought that made this story stand out from the all the rest of them I have read because the setting in the story took place in two different kinds of worlds. Some of the activities that took place in the story were also very interesting. At the beginning Sakira is living in South Africa and in the middle of the story he is one Broadway singing with a group of very talentiewd singers. The story taught me a good lesson that Sakira did not ever forget his roots and what was happening back at his home town, where ware and politics were taking place. I would not really recommend this book to someone under the age of 11 or twelve because of some of the big words.
