      Book Description

Business headlines tout the fact that we currently have the lowest unemployment rates in nearly half a century. This is wonderful news for employees who are in jobs they enjoy. It may even be better news for those who are unhappily employed because there are more jobs than there are qualified people to fill them.

Unfortunately, it isn't such wonderful new for employers. Only a decade ago it was a buyers' market for employees. There were more qualified employees than there were available jobs. For the foreseeable future, it is a sellers' market. The booming economy has produced new jobs at a greater rate than it has produced qualified applicants.

What does this mean? It means it's tough to find the right corporate leaders. Every hiring decision becomes more critical for these positions. Placing the wrong individual in a job can be costly, aggravating, and even disastrous in certain situations.

As a consultant to large and small businesses and organizations nationwide, Don Andersson has discovered that “mis-hires” are a more common problem than people realize. In "Hire for Fit," Don Andersson explores this critically important issue and then provides proven plans of action to solve it.

Every CEO, president, executive, and manager with hiring responsibilities should read "Hire for Fit" and implement its ideas, plans, and strategies. Her or his investment in purchasing and reading this book will be compounded by savings in time, energy, resources, aggravation, and money.

Executives searching for a new position will also benefit from reading "Hire for Fit." They will learn what they must know to avoid running through a gauntlet of jobs that are wrong for them. As the cover of the book depicts, when forced into a wrong position, pegs (and professionals) risk being splintered.

As one executive said, “Hire for Fit" offers all the right advice.”

      2 out of 5 stars Could've been sumed up in a paragraph........2002-12-06

Basically the book makes one point -- it just keeps making that point over and over again and explaining it detail. I read the book cover to cover in just under 2 hours. Hire people who click with your organization. Just because someone is successful someplace, doesn't mean they will be in your organization. It's because of poor hiring that the average executive lasts only two years. Analyze your specific needs and how the candidate will help you overcome it. A better book for hiring is: "Sales Management" -- details about hiring a sales person, but very applicable with all employees.

5 out of 5 stars Strongly recommended reading for corporate recruiters.......2001-04-28

The very high (on average, 40%) turnover rate of executives within 18 to 24 months of entering new positions creates an financial and operational burden on today's corporate efforts to be profitable in a highly competitive marketplace. Don Andersson's Hire For Fit: Select The Best Executive For Your Organization walks the reader through the entire process of selecting executives that would work productively and competently within their companies structure and culture. Of special interest is Andersson's step-by-step interactive action plan that will assure the next hire as being able to do the expected work within a particular corporate structure. Hire For Fit is invaluable, strongly recommended reading for corporate recruiters, managers, and human resource directors.

5 out of 5 stars The Hiring Answer Every Manager Needs.......2001-04-18

Bravo! Here's a book that fills a long-ignored niche. I haven't seen anything else that approaches it.

The text is very readable. The clever chapter titles add a dash of seasoning and the illustrations are obviously drawn out of real-life experience. It's clear throughout that Don Andersson has "walked his talk." A CEO's voice rings through loud and clear and gives an authenticity that can't be duplicated without hands-on experience.

It was especially interesting find out why it's so difficult for older executives to start over in a new environment. Don Andersson puts his finger on the why - along with explaining what to do and how to do it. "What Does Clarence Think?" ought to be taught in every leadership seminar. And Chapter 24, "The Productive Entrance Strategy", A Resource for Success," should be required reading for every manager. This book synthesizes everything we have known, suspected, wondered about and ignored into an easy-to-follow guide to hiring the right person.

It's especially valuable that Hire for Fit is as valid for the new employee as it is for the employer. I can think of six colleagues who need to read it right now - and dozens who would have benefited from it over the years. Those of us who've survived the awkward ages and emerged wiser - if grayer - have long needed this guidebook for hiring into the new corporate environments.

4 out of 5 stars Hire for Fit.......2001-04-03

Hire for Fit fills a niche!

Senior managers are often too fast to hire and ultimately too slow to fire, spending enormous sums on training programs just to get their new hires up to speed. I'm not suggesting we shouldn't be supportive. However, "hiring for fit" is simply a better investment.

In Hire for Fit Don Andersson presents a clear and understandable template to be followed if "world class" managers are to be identified and hired. The case is made wonderfully in his "What You've Inherited" and "Growing Awareness" Sections. In his "Invitation to Action" we are then given practical insight as to how to implement a hiring process to enhance business performance. Calling them the four "fit factors" Andersson describes what we often overlook in hiring someone to fill a key slot - and it's that oversight that, without intention, sets our new hire up to fail.

It is clear to me the time invested in developing my company's fit factors and then applying them during the hiring process is time well spent. On the other hand I worry about my managers involved in the hiring process becoming fatigued, taking shortcuts and ultimately compromising on an "almost good fit."

In his "Support Success" section we get a solid reminder how much more we could benefit from our orientation process if we would be more intentional. Finally the book presents us with a step by step process for making hires that are right for our organization in its concluding section THE PRODUCTIVE ENTRANCE STRATEGY ®. If done well there is a reasonable chance for a good hire. If not completed accurately, only disappointment can follow.

There are many "how to" books on writing job specifications, interview techniques, advertising for candidates, etc. But this is the first putting it all in context of "how to" hire for a world class organization. I've read dozens of books (all published in the last 20 years) on creating "High performance organizations" or managing for peak performance, but I have not yet seen a truly significant business improvement without successful new hires at key executive positions.

No manager should have the excuse that Hire for Fit does not pertain to her or him. It's a breakthrough in understanding and using the screening and selection process to build a world class organization.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2001-04-02

Hire for Fit is a timely presentation dealing with the selection process and many of the higher level details that could help make your next hire go smoothly. Don's insights as to why, when and which senior executives and managers are brought into an organization are very helpful when you take abit more time to evaluate your plans before bringing someone on as a new employee. With hiring and retention costs at the high levels they are today, making the right choice has never been more important. This is a 'must' read for anyone who wants to make a more informed hiring decision.

5 out of 5 stars The Land Was Theirs: Jewish Farmers in the Garden State........1999-12-21

Gertrude Dubrovsky is the leading scholar of what is a very neglected field, the history of Jewish Farming. "The Land Was Theirs" is a comprehensive history of what was the Cradle of the Jewish farming movement, New Jersey.

Between 1880 and the Second World War, tens of thousands of Jews set up farms in southern and central New Jersey. The adventurous Jews, most of whom were recent immigrants, set up private farms but also established cooperatives and unions to help one another. They lived in tight-knit communities based on ethnic identity and often ideology. "The Land Was Theirs" focuses on Farmingdale , NJ, where Dubrovsky grew up but is also a rigourously researched history of farming in the entire state. The introduction includes what is one of the best essays on Jewish farming in the entire country. A must for anyone interested in this overlooked part of American Jewish history.

This was my favourite book as a child. Through very easy to recreate tricks and experiments (100 of them), the book teaches basic science facts about air, water, mechanics, electricity, light, mathematics, psychology, astronomy etc.

We should have bought this book BEFORE we started shopping for a used motorhome. Lots of good info on how to shop, questions to ask, what to look for, etc. It did not, however, give us enough of what we were looking for in terms of how to use our new (to us) motor home. Boy, was this book a disappointment. I've been crisscrossing this beautiful country of ours now for over fifty years in pick-up trucks, travel trailers, and motorhomes. We'll be taking off in April in our Fleetwood Flair for six months and there was not one word in this book that will make the trip more enjoyable or safer. I'll admit that a person who has never camped or owned an RV might possibly find something of interest on one of the 380 pages of "The RVer's Bible".

Several weeks have now passed since I posted this review and I feel badly about giving this author one star. It's just that the book was so very, very disappointing. Another reviewer expressed exactly how I felt while reading it, "Almost like they had contracted to write a 20,000 word book - but when they were done, there were only 12,000 so they went back and added some 'fluff'".

2 out of 5 stars An okay intro - not a lot of "meat".......2006-08-15

Generally okay for a newbie like me, but I was hoping for more.

I found the writing style a bit annoying...seemed to say the same things over and over, with lots of "noise" words and little substance. Almost like they had contracted to write a 20,000 word book - but when they were done, there were only 12,000 so they went back and added some "fluff".

We have been thinking of going the Rv route, but are still undecided. This book gave me much to think about, and will be helpful in making the final yes or no decision as to buy, or not buy. There are some aspects of rv ownership that I had not yet considered. The book certainly served it's purpose for me. Very insightful.

This book tackles a lot of information that is needed when you are starting out. It may not be the "bible" but it sure gives a lot of really good information.

                          Book Description

Vivant Denon was Bonaparte's adviser on artistic matters, and was known as 'Napoleon's eye'. As a chapter in military and cultural history and as an insight into the mind of a compulsive collector this is a rich narrative, lavishly illustrated with Denon's own drawings.

                          Critique

The book I read was called Crocodile Hunter. I would probably rate this book a four star book. The reason I would rate this book at such a high rating is because this book was very hard to put down because there was never any boring parts. The author kept the story very interesting through out the whole story. Some of the words in the story were really big words and from time to time I had to look up some of the words. Right from the start the story got right to the point and that made it a lot better than some of the other books that I had read. One thing I thought that made this story stand out from the all the rest of them I have read because the setting in the story took place in two different kinds of worlds. Some of the activities that took place in the story were also very interesting. At the beginning Sakira is living in South Africa and in the middle of the story he is one Broadway singing with a group of very talentiewd singers. The story taught me a good lesson that Sakira did not ever forget his roots and what was happening back at his home town, where ware and politics were taking place. I would not really recommend this book to someone under the age of 11 or twelve because of some of the big words.

                          5 out of 5 stars A New Broadway Show.......2001-01-06

Crocodile Burning, by Michael Williams, is one of the most intense books that I have ever read. About a young man, Seraki, from a small, present day, troubled South African village and his small show, the book takes an unexpected turn when the musical is invited to Broadway in New York City. With Seraki's brother in jail, Seraki needs to earn money to get him out. When the cast find out that they are not getting paid properly by the evil producer, trouble starts brewing. Read the book to find out what happens! I would definitely recommend this book because the characters are excitingly unpredictable, and because the settings are interesting when changed. I really liked this book because the characters are so unpredictable. An example of this is that Mosake, the show's manager, seems to be a very nice person in the beginning of the book when the musical is stationed in the small village in South Africa. Then, when the show moves to Broadway, we see the evil man that Mosake really is. In the book, there is also a very unexpected change in settings. The small musical that is started in Seraki's poor South African town goes to New York City and is a huge star on Broadway. These are just two of the reasons why you will enjoy this novel. Even though the characters and the changes in settings are very exciting, some people might not recommend this book because it seems a little bit unrealistic. For example, someone might think that it is almost impossible for a musical, from a small South African town, would become a success on Broadway. I believe that this is not a good enough reason not to take my recommendation because thought the plot may e unrealistic, the story is told in a very believable way. You will not regret reading this South African novel!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent story with a lot of useful historical backround.......1999-02-09

Overall this was a fairly good book. The story at first is kind of slow, then picks up, but there is really never a climax. There was a lot of historical information in this book that I found very interesting. It really made me realize how tough conditions were in South Africa at the time that this book takes place.
