Book Description
Cultivating Inspired Leaders is about becoming an 'inspired and inspirational leader-manager', regardless of position in an organization. Such individuals see their role as participants in the management process, working with associates, developing leadership skills among those around them and cultivating managerial skills within themselves and fellow team members.
This book asserts that managers progress in stages from their traditional roles as administrators to that of 'leader-manager' with the capability and eagerness to cultivate leadersip, then ultimately to 'inspired and inspirational leader-manager' with a sense of dedication and commitment to their organization, associates and spirit within themselves. Author Bruce Lansdale reveals the path toward this enlighted goal with a wealth of experience and humor gained during his years at the American Farm School.
Customer Reviews:
A different slant on leadership.......2003-10-17
It seems to me that there are two broad categories of leader - those seeking earthly rewards and those seeking heavenly rewards. There is a wealth of material on those in the first category and by going to university or wading through a multitude of books you can acquire the leadership skills required. There are not so many books available regarding the leadership skills of the second category. How did Mother Teresa develop such phenomenal leadership skills that she gathered around her a dedicated group of followers prepared to live at the same level as the poorest of the poor in the slums of Calcutta and who would risk their lives in working side by side with lepers? And all this for zero salary, zero perks and no golden handshake at the end. Most of us would have taken one look at the job description and not even bothered to apply, even though there are plenty of job openings.
Bruce Lansdale holds the middle ground between the Mother Teresas of this world and charismatic CEOs of big corporations. For thirty-five years he was Director of the American Farm School, a nonprofit established in 1904 in northern Greece to improve the quality of life in rural areas by teaching farming, village crafts and industrial skills such as electricity, plumbing, sanitation to youth. For older people there was a community development program. Serving through the really tough years following the German occupation and the civil war when Greece was in a similar condition to many developing countries today, Lansdale's final years saw Greece join the EU and graduate to relative prosperity. These years gave Lansdale a wealth of experience recorded in his first book "Master farmer: Teaching Small farmers Management" which teaches the management skills required to POLKA - plan, organize, lead, k(c)ontrol and adjust. In later years he identified leadership as one of the most important skills to acquire, resulting in "Cultivating Inspired Leaders: Making Participatory Management Work". We will have no difficulty in doing everything he tells us but he brings it all together in a way that is particularly appropriate for nonprofits. Ambassador Niles, President, US Council for International Business and US Ambassador to Greece from 1993 to 1997 knew Lansdale and the American Farm School very well and wrote "Bruce Lansdale is the most inspiring person I have ever met, and one of the wisest. His work as Director of the American Farm School did more for Greece and Greek-American relations, than all the American ambassadors combined, myself included. His book, "Cultivating Inspired Leaders" presents the practical lessons in management and leadership learned over more than half a century. I heartily recommend it."
Cultivating Inspired Leaders has been written for leader-managers at all levels and in all work, particularly for those in nonprofits. The book is based on the philosophy that management is doing what you want with what you've got and that workers of every type and in every position are leader-managers if they believe that there is something greater to what they are doing than may appear in material form.
The transformation of an administrator who may manage by right, privilege or appointment to an inspiring leader-manager is not unlike the metamorphosis of the egg to larva to pupa to butterfly. How many of us fail to be the butterfly we were born to be because we did not have the teacher to guide us or we lacked the willingness to pass through the mental, emotional and spiritual struggle involved? This book provides the advice, guidance and inspiration to those who wish to travel this path. Peter Drucker observes that non-profit institutions that do not have a conventional bottom line may have to measure their effectiveness by their success in producing changed human beings. If this is so, the goal of cultivating inspired leaders is a noble one and may well be the most important task we face.
The goal of this book is that our management becomes participatory, that the helper and the helped become a team, that the manager and employee become companions, that the guide and the guided lead each other. The beauty of this book is that it spells out how we can do it and shows that each of us can become an inspiration to our fellow man.
If you are a trustee of a nonprofit this should be required reading. If your ambition is to climb to the top of a nonprofit you should study this book so that all the lessons it contains become second nature to you. If you are a secretary or receptionist or just starting your career, there is plenty in this book for you; you are a key person within the organization and can show leadership at whatever level you currently hold. If you have been appointed to a top post and find that you are a leader in name only and lack enthusiastic followers, you can become an inspired and inspiring leader. This book is not just a good read, but it demands a lot of you and your organization. The chapter "Evaluate Yourself" may reveal some unpleasant truths. No pain; no gain. But if you really want success for yourself and your nonprofit there is no better place to start than to absorb the wisdom contained in this book.

Staring up through the branches, waiting for figs to drop.......2000-11-30
Stop long enough to notice the clump of old men standing under the shade trees on the courthouse lawn. And listen. Or if they go silent when you approach, notice the murmur that resumes when you're out of earshot. In Thornham, Texas, those up-in-years menfolk standing under that big, old fig tree are the town gossips, and they're ready to pass judgment on anyone in their ken, based on hear-say or outright prevarications. Once the word is out, woe be unto the targets of their barbs of scorn. If you are a sucker for Texana and a good yarn, you won't be disappointed in "Under the Man Fig." Fans of Eudora Welty, William Faulkner, Carson McCullers and Bulwer-Lytton may recognize the meter, dialect and shrouded tone. If you're offended by outdated/unkind/never-appropriate words referring to African-Americans, you'll find plenty to fault in this 1890s novel. But readers who are able to set revisionism aside and accept this work for something true to its era (although over-romanticized here and there) will find much to appreciate. Make sure to absorb the afterword by Sylvia Ann Grider, but I suggest reading it before jumping into the text. It has a whetting effect that makes the book even more enjoyable.

Customer Reviews:
Ho hum, and a creepy rape scene between the love interests.......2005-04-04
This was recommended to me by a girl I work with who is a big fan of the western-romance genre and of this author in particular. With her stamp of approval, I read this, and I parts of it were good. However, I did not feel any chemistry between the two main characters and tended to skim their love scenes. And apparently it is a requirement of the cowboy-romance that rape has to be involved portrayed as love, because this is the third book in which I've encountered it. There was this side character who was really sweet and charming until he finally got alone with the girl he loved. Then he sort of kidnapped her and called her "mustang girl" because she struggled to get away as he was raping her, and he was generally creepy and forced himself on her even though she said no, and when she asked if he intended to marry her afterward he said, "Sorry, girl, this bronc can't be tamed." But he otherwise continued to be sweet and charming, except in his dealings with this girl when he was really really creepy. So, I won't be reading more by this author.
A great story.......2004-11-09
Texas Woman was a great story. I enjoyed it's fast paced adventure. Cruz is a wonderful hero and his gentleness toward Slone is very tender. Slone struggles to trust and love again after Cruz's brother betrayed her and left her pregnant and unwed. She gives the baby to Cruz at birth and marrys him on paper only until such time and the man who killed Cruzs brother is brought to justice, then it is to be a real marriage. This is their story of the stuggle to overcome the many things life passes our way. I was a little disappointed that we didn't really see much of the other family in this book. Frontier Woman and Comanche Woman were much more family interactive. Nevertheless, it was still a good story and ties the triology together. I recommend you read them in order. They do stand alone but like any good family history it's best to get the information in order. You feel like you know them all.
All three books (Frontier Woman, Comanche Woman, Texas Woman) are really good stories but I have to say that Comanche Woman was by far my favorite. All three heros were good men who were strong yet tender. But there was something about Long Quiet that drew me in in Comanche Woman.
This series is a keeper for me!
"Cebellina"...........2003-11-07
"Texas Woman" is the third and last story of Joan Johnston's 'Sisters of the Lone Star' trilogy. They follow the life, loves and adventures of three sisters born to wealthy cotton plantation owner,Rip Stewart. His dreams were dashed when he had girls instead of boys to follow in his big footsteps, but raised his daughters to have the courage and strength of any man.The first two books(also great reads),"Frontier Woman" and "Comanche Woman" focus on the younger rebellious daughter "Cricket" and the quiet middle sister "Bay".It is helpful, but not neccessary to have read these two stories first for the background information on the family history and the history of Texas' fight for Statehood and freedom from Mexico.
And so now we come to the story of Sloan Stewart, or as she is very affectionately called by Cruz Guerrero(I see Antonio Banderas here), the man who loves her, "Cebellina".
Sloan is the strong one. The one Rip has groomed all her life to someday take over the sprawling plantation known as Three Oaks.Through tragic circumstances, Sloan has built a wall around herself that will not be easily broken. Cruz, has loved his dead brother's lover from the first time he laid eyes on her.A secret pact that the two made in the earlier novels, now comes to light, and Sloan is forced to abide by her word. She is torn betweeen her love of her land and the kind of everlasting love a man like Cruz can offer her.
Miss Johnston keeps us captivated by Sloan's story until the very last chapter. There is also, as always dangerous villans, exciting adventure and steamy romance. The continuing story of the Republic of Texas and the move to Statehood is an interesting bit of history added to the adventure. We also learn more about Luke, the half brother of the sisters and a new character, Tomasita, adds her charms as well.Cricket, Bay and their faimilies make brief but touching appearances as well.
I couldn't put this one down. If you love romance and western adventure you'll love this one as well. "Cebellina" has become my favorite of the three sisters.Joan Johnston gave her a heart the size of Texas and her story will leave you wanting more.
So,thanks Joan Johnston, for once again taking me away to another time and place, and now it's on to the 'Bitter Creek' series to read about the modern day descendants of these three remarkable women.
Happy trails....Laurie
A story that captures your interest and never lets go........2000-04-27
Sloan Stewart is the eldest of Rip Stewart's daughters. She is his heir, his rock. She's the overseer on his plantation. She lives for the land, because past heartbreak has taught her that land is all that one can count on. She was always considered unusual by the town's standards. Now she's has had a son out of wedlock by her first love, a traitor, and she's made a secret deal with his brother, Cruz. Cruz has loved her for years, but Sloan is too afraid to love him. When a secret part of Rip's life comes to light, Sloan is furious and unwillingly turns to Cruz. The author manages to keep the romance and action going without sacrificing the heroine's independent spirit, even when it inconveniences the hero. She adds intrigue with Cruz's secret occupation, Cruz's mother and ties up loose ends with Sloan's son, whom she gave to Cruz to raise because she was afraid to love him. The secondary love story with Luke was a nice touch, too. All in all, the story was well-written and I was sorry to see the Sisters of the Lone Star end. I hope Joan Johnson will eventually do some sequels about their children. I'd like to see how the next generation of Lone Star children handle their adventures.
Great reading.......2000-01-28
The third volume of Sister of the Lone Star is very well worth reading, as are the previous two. Had hoped Johnston would write the story of Luke.

Be Unprepared could be the motto for all errantry........2006-11-05
I read this book right after I finished my own wilderness-wandering, in the same part of the desert that Corbett wandered in before he died. Go to Wikepedia and search for Jim Corbett. You'll find that he was an intensely inspiring person. Read his book and you'll find he was a fantastic writer too. Your jaw will be dropping. Read it.
It will take you places........2002-04-27
This book like walking, meanders in and out of many ideas and worlds. Sometimes this is disconcerting, but it also inspiring. And really tells how you can achieve self sufficency by goatwalking.
I hope one day to re read this while sitting in a canyon far from civilization with my goats in the distance.
one of the best.......2001-03-06
This singular and highly important book should not be out of print. Corbett writes on life, faith, and action in a poetic and prophetic voice. His call is toward a far more difficult path than one finds in much of what passes for "religious" action in today's society. His mind is on fire, and he ranges over a vast, and seemingly unrelated realm of subjects including politics, philosophy, faith, ecology, civil disobedience, wilderness survival, and how to raise (and slaughter) goats. Somehow he manages to pull it all together into a seamless whole. His suggestions for building a truly catholic (in the all inclusive form of the word) church point the way toward a true morality, something greatly needed in these times of moral posturing by our leading politicians and religious leaders.
This book is a must read for anyone interested in considering where our society has gone astray, and how we can return to the true path.
everyone's a goatwalker!.......2000-01-24
This book is part journal and part manifesto of Jim Corbett's experience trekking back and forth across the Sonoran Desert as a "coyote"guide for Mexican, Guatamalan and Equedoran refugees from the 'covert' destabilization campaigns that the US was waging in Central America in the 1980s. Equal parts goatherder and revolutionary, Corbett covers in detail a variety of issues ranging from the dietary requirements of goats and people in the desert to an account of the legal hassles Guatamalan refugees encountered after successfully walking across the desert to the apparent safety of Tucson AZ. This book is a poetic snapshot of the people affected by last stages of the US's outdated coldwar policies and an educated loner who gave a damn.

Gold Standard.......2007-09-02
The title pretty much sums it up. This book is the gold standard for adventure motorcycling or travel in general. With heaps of specific information necessary for your trip, along with some classic European humor makes for a great cover to cover read and/or an invaluable reference book. With information ranging from tire change instructions to the state of travel in Columbia this book has any would be or genuine adventurer covered.
Great starter book.......2007-07-21
I have to say, I read this book cover to cover. I was surprised how up to date it was. I've been motorcycling for a few years for general transportation and fun. I started getting interested in adventure motorcycling this past year. I like to get off the normal tourist routes when I travel and adventure motorcycling looked like a great way to to see some parts of the world.
The book does a good job of covering all the major topics - picking a bike (it reviews 10-15 of them), what to wear, items to bring, how to pack, gear, typical mechanical issues to expect, safety, border crossings, etc. It also covers popular routes in different regions of the world. These sections are okay, but they really didn't have enough depth for me to decide where I might want to go. It only acts as a stating point. Then again, I'm sure there's TONs of routes to take per country, so I can't imagine it would be easy to add more detail to any level of comprehensivness. If the author reads this - a set of top 10 routes might be nice, especially if it included a rating system for different attributes. The second half of the book is made up of 2-5 pages short stories or diaries from riders. These stories were the best part of the whole book. I wish there were more because they're very interesting and you learn from those as well. They really leave you wanting to go out and hit the road.
One of the best two books in motorcycle travel.......2007-04-25
This book is the starting point of any motorcycle adventure. It will give you great advise and everything you need to know. This book along Riding the World are the must haves for any rider in the dual sport category. Buy it, you won't regret it.
ESSENTIAL!!.......2007-03-31
This book really is the bible if you're planning a trip. Yes, you can probably get all this info from websites, but it won't be so clearly laid out and thorough. An absolute must!
A must have if you are planning a trip.......2007-03-12
Even though I am keeping my trip within the US and Canada, I found this book very interesting and helpful. If you are planning a motorcycle trip, this would be my first stop.

At last, life with LD from a girl's perspective!.......2001-07-02
My 11 year old daughter has dyslexia, just like Katie. This is the first book we've found that paints a vivid and moving picture of what it is like for a girl to struggle with severe reading and spelling difficulties (there are many books about boys!) Katie's story resounds with humanity and a deep understanding of the challenges kids with LD face in school and at home. Yet it is not depressing! We learn what strategies Katie uses to deal with her difficulties. We see the loving support she has from her family and the inspiration of good teachers who pay her the extra attention she so needs to succeed.
Janover tells the story with an attention to detail that enables the reader to "see" everything as if it were right in front of you. I read the book to my daughter and she loved every word--Katie's tale rang so true to my own daughter's story and to her dreams and hopes. And I learned from her reactions to the story what she was going through. Clearly the author knows her material. I recommend this book strongly to any young girl or parent who wants a good read and a great story about the struggles and gifts of dyslexia!
