The Picture Book of grapevine diesease.......2006-07-04

If you grow grapes, you'll probably want to have a copy of this book. Nice color photographs of grapevine diseases, damage done by pesticides, and injury from climate. While the collection has a large number of pests and diseases covered, there are some issing, such as the grape cane girdler and grape cane gallmaker. The life cycle and discussion of each type of disease is somewhat useful, although most of the technical aspects of the diseases can probably be more appreciated by someone with a better understanding of biology. The book is a bit pricey, and most of the photographs of the diseases can be found on the Internet although it is convenient to have them all in one place.

A wonderful book covering the beginnings of the African Safari to the present. Many current authors use this book as reference for their own books such as Peter Beard, Bibi Jordan, Kuki Gallman, and Mirella Ricciardi. If all of these authors use this book as a reference and quote it throughout their own books it has just got be good. I recommend it highly for any African Safari book collection!

Mr. Butts has invented a whole new genre with this book. I literally could not put it down. Aside from being a genuine, keep you up all night page-turner, it comes with some really interesting, inspiring thoughts on living. I liked it and would like to see more. I would highly recommend it.

A guide book to the rest of your life........1999-01-02

This fictional adventure is really an instructional book on how to be a better person through the remainder of your life. The Three Tresures of Courage described in this book offer us the insight into how to change our life in a very positive manner.

Cleverly written to work your mind........1998-09-24

Rick's work is excellent. The adventure becomes so real and vivid in your mind that you'll just know that the book was written for you. It is hard to put the book down! The journey to find the three treasures- the treasure of the mind; the treasure of the heart; and the treasure of the spirit captures the ups and downs we all face. You'll appreciate the wisdom of Rick's work.

I've had the pleasure of attending several of Rick's live presentations, and this book is a great compliment to his live seminars. He has many wonderful ideas for living in the 21st Century Jungle.

Inspiration for those at the crossroad of life........1998-06-08

"The Safari Chronicles" is a fictional story, with which the reader can easily identify, due to its highly realistic nature. Several major crises happen to the lead character, Jim, who finally goes on a safari to find himself. The adventure proves to be more than he had bargained for (despite the fact that the safari was free of charge, in terms of monetary price). Over the course of the safari, Jim reads from a manuscript left to him by one of the leaders of the group. This script proves to be his guide for courage and strength, in what becomes a struggle for survival. It would not be fair to pass off this book as a mere fictional drama. Due to its realism, the reader cannot help but use Jim as a focal point for his or her own struggles, past or present. This book can be useful for educating oneself about priorities -- how to rank them, and how to go about implementing them; but could be especially helpful for anyone who is currently at a crossroad in his/her life. In short, it deals with the truths that we all know (or should know) about life, and illustrates one man's successful struggle with incorporating them into real life.

This book is a book of excellence,every coach needs to have it on his hands, you learn baseball from this book.
Also I must say I learnt new defensive & offensive situations, this is very important for me.

More plays than signs.......2004-06-16

In a book that is mildly disappointing, the author -- a knowledgeable coach with years of experience -- attempts to compile a "complete book of baseball signs and plays." The result is a text that alternates between an insider's perspective of the game and a number of chapters that are repetitive or seem out of place.

It's not clear who the book is written for: serious fans and coaches at any level will already be familiar with all but the most unusual strategies described, while casual fans may not find the repetitive descriptions and diagrams all that engaging. The author begins by providing some historical background to the origin of signs and plays that most readers will find informative. Then he moves on to break down offensive signs and plays to a degree that is almost unncessary (e.g., listing all possible base-running situations -- "nobody on, man on first, man on second..."). The author provides a nice summary of the types of signals (flash, holding, block, etc.), but leaves one with the false impression that all possible signals have been described (e.g., "folding the arms: delayed steal"). In the same chapter, he also includes a number of strategies that teams can use to produce more offense, and then lists almost seven pages of "points to remember as base coaches... duites of base coaches...," once again leaving the reader wondering about the central purpose of the book. Consequently, the bulk of this second chapter is probably of most value to little league and high school coaches with limited experience.

The longest chapter, "Defensive Plays and Signs," details over 50 plays with separate charts that illustrate the positioning and movement of defensive players, but again, this section may tax the patience of readers who are not serious students of the game.

Chapter Four is one section that strikes me as a bit odd to include in this text: "Umpires' Calls and Signs" gives us an interesting window into the "third team" (p. 250) on the field, but it takes the reader some time to wade through all 77 situations that describe and illustrate how umpires position themselves for plays and how they communicate verbally and nonverbally with players, coaches, and each other. Again, coaches, players, and serious fans will be well versed in the bulk of the chapter's content, while casual readers may find this section of the text too involved and repetitive.
The book ends with two short chapters, an intriguing section on stealing signs, and a collection of humorous anecdotes that the author witnessed -- entertaining, to be sure, but one gets the impression that the closing chapter is an unncessary add-on.
"The Complete Book of Baseball Signs and Plays" is written in a fairly clear, albeit repetitve, style, and the diagrams do attempt to clarify the various complex situations. Its strength lies in its organization, while it is somewhat lacking in overall content. This book will be most valuable to little league and high school coaches as a reference tool that attempts to summarize a wide range of offensive and defensive plays.

Thin on Content.......2004-01-08

After reading the editorial reviews I eagerly anticipated receiving this book. When I did I was somewhat disappointed. I found it thin on content. The diagrams are clear, but the writing is not. It's not very well-organized. There wasn't much that was new to me, and calling it a "Complete Book of Baseball Signs and Plays" is a stretch - it's far from complete.

If you want a better book, get Ron Polk's Baseball Playbook - an animated playbook CD is also available from some suppliers online.

More Pittsburgh historical fiction please.......2004-02-24

I love historical fiction and actually bought this book without realizing it was a young adult book.

I thought the book was well written overall. I live in Pittsburgh and I have never heard this story. I enjoyed how the author unraveled the mystery for the reader. I don't think a 14-year-old would appreciate the ending like someone a little older would though. I myself was divided on it. I thought it was interesting and it agreed with Jury's personality... On the other hand I felt like I didn't get the ending, the answer to the main question in the book.

I agree with the other reviews (which I have now read) that the mom sub story should not be in the book and waste of good trees.

I do think this book is worth the paperback price. I am also interested in reading more of this author's books, hopefully with adult characters set in Pittsburgh.

not only for young adults.......2001-08-16

I had never heard of this particular "true crime story" before reading this novel. Mr. Coles helps you see another side of this mystery - one that makes sense and is entirely believable. I enjoyed the interplay between Jury and the college students/sleuths. I would be interested in reading a sequel and seeing how these characters evolve. My only complaint (thus no 5th star) was the subplot with Dee's mom - fascinating stuff but it just went nowhere without resolution. I thought this relationship was ripe for further development. Good job, overall!

A Great Story for all Readers.......2001-07-02

Compass in the Blood is the sort of a book young and old adults could enjoy, especially anyone who love mysteries.

Now I am not a person who particularly likes mysteries, but I loved Compass, in part because of the historical basis. Like many people I am more and more drawn to "creative non-fiction," and I was hooked into the story in part by my fascination with the Mrs Soffel story. What a great story that is,this old scandal involving a warden's wife who aids in a jailbreak. And how charming to ahve the story unfold throguh the research of a jigh school senior who starts off by doing a "term paper" on Mrs Soffel.

As a father of three and a person who has spent a career teaching college kids, I was drawn to the young "researchers"-Dee, Megan, and Cory-such a warm but realistic version of young people. Optimistic in ways, but accurate it seems to me. And I loved the relationship of Jury, their older employer/advisor to them-imaging so nicely the teacher-student partnership. As with Another Kind of Monday (Coles owonderful previous novel), I loved the echoes of the teaching life, the way this research project makes partners of the young and the old, makes them colleagues at the end (which puts a smile on my mind). This was one of the best books, most fun and fastest reads I have come across this year. I teach children's literature, and while this is a great book for young adults, it really is also a great book for anyone.
