Book Description
Fuzzy set theory, which started not much more than 20 years ago as a generalization of classical set theory, has in the meantime evolved into an area which scientifically, as well as from the point of view of applications, is recognized as a very valuable contribution to the existing knowledge. This book provides a remarkable contribution to Fuzzy Economics and presents the state of the art in fuzzy theory of value, namely the aggregated model of microeconomics with fuzzy behaviours. It presents an analysis of classical problems with new tools which lead to interesting results.
Book Description
Cultural diversity has become one of the most important and difficult issues for a growing number of companies with employee stock plans such as employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs) and stock options. Both in implementing and communicating stock plans and in trying to create a more participative "ownership" culture, companies with diverse work forces can face difficulties and misunderstandings. Over the course of several months, staffers at the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO) talked to employee ownership companies and advisors to identify common patterns of response and learn any particular techniques that seemed to work well. The NCEO also consulted with leading diversity experts to gain insights into just how diversity plays out in the workplace. This book, with chapters written by NCEO staff and outside experts, brings the results of these efforts together.

Gene Wars is a succinct, impassioned argument against corporate control of food plant genes. The author, a senior fellow at the Institute of Agriculture and Trade Policy, discusses monoculture crops, pesticide use, government agricultural subsidies, NAFTA, and genetic diversity in building her case against globalization and the patenting of genes. Her stance is strongly activist, and her knowledge of these topics is extensive and impressive. Scientific breakthroughs in food production are reaching their limits, she writes, and the answers don't lie in more and better technology: "Perhaps most alarming about this future is the likelihood that despite new technologies, the number of people in the world going hungry will actually increase."
All is not bleak, though. Dawkins outlines ways citizens can get involved, whether it's through political activity or teaming up with local growers to move away from the big, monoculture crop model and ensure the safety and security of the world's food supply. --Therese Littleton

Book Description
“Christopher Hogwood came home on my lap in a shoebox. He was a creature who would prove in many ways to be more human than I am.”
–from The Good Good Pig
A naturalist who spent months at a time living on her own among wild creatures in remote jungles, Sy Montgomery had always felt more comfortable with animals than with people. So she gladly opened her heart to a sick piglet who had been crowded away from nourishing meals by his stronger siblings. Yet Sy had no inkling that this piglet, later named Christopher Hogwood, would not only survive but flourish–and she soon found herself engaged with her small-town community in ways she had never dreamed possible. Unexpectedly, Christopher provided this peripatetic traveler with something she had sought all her life: an anchor (eventually weighing 750 pounds) to family and home.
The Good Good Pig celebrates Christopher Hogwood in all his glory, from his inauspicious infancy to hog heaven in rural New Hampshire, where his boundless zest for life and his large, loving heart made him absolute monarch over a (mostly) peaceable kingdom. At first, his domain included only Sy’s cosseted hens and her beautiful border collie, Tess. Then the neighbors began fetching Christopher home from his unauthorized jaunts, the little girls next door started giving him warm, soapy baths, and the villagers brought him delicious leftovers. His intelligence and fame increased along with his girth. He was featured in USA Today and on several National Public Radio environmental programs. On election day, some voters even wrote in Christopher’s name on their ballots.
But as this enchanting book describes, Christopher Hogwood’s influence extended far beyond celebrity; for he was, as a friend said, a great big Buddha master. Sy reveals what she and others learned from this generous soul who just so happened to be a pig–lessons about self-acceptance, the meaning of family, the value of community, and the pleasures of the sweet green Earth. The Good Good Pig provides proof that with love, almost anything is possible.

Unusual Pig Story--Hilarious!.......2007-10-07
This book about a pig was hilarious! I enjoyed it because I am an animal lover and the story was so charmingly funny. It made me laugh and I also liked the pictures that were included. It was a fast read too!
A wonderful surprise.......2007-10-01
I bought this book because I'm an animal lover, and pigs have always enchanted me. But I admit I was not expecting a masterpiece. The first 15 pages made me laugh and cry so much that the book instantly became the greatest literary surprise of my year. Extremely well written, sensitive, intelligent. My fun reading Sy Montgomery's story of the wonderful Christopher was such that I bought four copies to give as a present to special friends.
Read this book!.......2007-08-13
A friend recommended this book to me, and I was hesitant since I'm usually not an animal book person. I shouldn't have worried for a minute. This book is not just about an incredible pig, but so much more. It's about community and love and travel and death (people and animals) and how to appreciate things while you have them. It's about coming to grips with imperfection in the people and animals we love.
Sy Montgomery lives a very interesting life and shares herself and those around her in a well-written book.
Read it!
Political agenda.......2007-07-23
The author has a political agenda and an extremist point of view that she repeatedly rams down your throat. I thought this was on par with such fantastic books as Marley and Me, but this was not the case at all. The writing is fair, the subject matter gets hijacked for her political views. Why does she assume that we want to hear her political viewpoint when purchasing a story about a pet pig? Very disappointing.
A Good Good Read.......2007-07-19
Sy Montgomery's book teaches us a lot about pigs and people and how both can follow the right path in life. I'll never have a pet pig, but now I can understand how people can cherish them like any other pet. Montgomery's writing is well paced and full of enough calamities in her family and in her friends' families to keep the action going and going. I could have had less of her feelings about how she and her ilk are superior inhabitants of the planet. Also, we don't need explanations of the obvious: "The word compassion means 'with suffering.' To have compassion is to wiilingly join in the suffering - to show those you love that you will not let them suffer alone."
But all in all, this is a very enjoyable book. Christopher certainly grows on you.

Basketball for Dummies is another slam dunk in the Dummies series. Former Notre Dame head coach Digger Phelps begins with the fundamentals and quickly moves up court from there. By the final buzzer, you'll have pulled down pointers on how to play the game, how to look good on the court, how to coach it, how to watch it, how to strategize, and even how to talk trash on the playground. From H-O-R-S-E to Hoosier hysteria to the signature moves--Grant Hill's between-the-legs hesitation, Michael Jordan's fadaeway--of the greats of the NBA, Phelps has come up with a game plan that takes the game seriously, and teaches its nuances a helluva lot less painfully than running wind sprints between the foul lines.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Read.......2005-07-16
This book has alot of very helpful info on the game and the breakdown of the rules. The diagrams on plays should be easier to understand though, because most people can not follow on how the plays or drawn out or worded. I wanted a little more information on fouls and how they work..... there is not much a definiton and explanation of a defensive foul. But alltogether it is a great book and reference for the game of basketball.
Great Resource.......2005-03-15
This book does a great job of breaking down basketball into some of the smallest elements that starting coaches might not remember. This would be a great resource for all elementary and middle school coaches. It is written by one of the best college coaches of all time. This book is filled with reliable tips about the game of basketball for coaches and players.
Decent.......2003-12-18
Based on the limited rule coverage and lack of text and diagrams covering the differences between the various levels, I was tempted to give no more than three stars. However, the tips on how to improve your basketball play were worth five stars, so I averaged the two. It is not quite up to the caliber of other "for Dummies" books, but it is worth a read.
Uninformative about any technical details.......2003-11-17
I bought this book hoping to get some insight into some technical issues that cause endless arguments between my buddies when we play (most often about whether a particular play involved a foul or not). If you have the same idea, forget about this book as it has next to no in-depth explanations for this kind of situations. For example, a defensive foul is defined as "a player engaging in illegal contact with an opponent". And this is it! There are no examples, no explanatory diagrams, nothing more. How's that for completely useless for you?
Or take this very common situation where you're watching a game on TV, then something quick happens that you don't quite follow, and the referee signals something. What exactly does the signal mean? The book has ZERO information on signals.
So what does the book contain?
- Hundreds of anecdotes, some of which make a good read but very few improve your understanding of the game.
- Very, very basic and shallow introduction to the game and the rules.
- Descriptions of playing strategies - this comes right after the introduction, leaving a big logical gap in your knowledge. If you are indeed a dummy about basketball (as the title suggests) then this part is too advanced for jumping right into it.
- Lots and lots of coaching suggestions and drills. Again, this would be a good idea but I'd assume that better knowledge of game rules would be a pre-requisite of successful coaching. And since the book is very sparse on the actual rules and jumps from very basic introduction straight to strategies and coaching, it leaves the latter parts hanging in the air.
Also, it has next to no information for practicing on your own, almost all the drills assume that you do it with many people.
- Lots of trivia on basketball history and players. Again, some of it is interesting but it doesn't improve your play or understanding of the game.
So all in all, the book was a disappointment. It might be useful if you're mostly interested in trivia but it doesn't help with anything substantial.
This book is a definite "trey".......2002-11-21
I remember watching some Notre Dame games that Digger Phelps coached. The games were always entertaining and top notch. You could tell Phelps was excellent at getting the most from his teams. This book is a continuation of that, he combines his knowledge and occasionally humor to write an excellent guide about the sport. In an early chapter, he points out that you can play the game almost anywhere and equipment costs are low. Who wouldn't enjoy it? In later chapters, he discusses rules, stats, shooting fundamentals and offense, defense and rebounding, specific plays run during games, the various levels of play (from pickup games up to the pros and international basketball), as well as chapters on coaching and getting into "playing shape." He even lists his choices for "Ten Greatest Games" and "Ten (well eleven) Greatest Players." The book even contains a glossary of terms and drills to use in practices.
Truly a complete "instructional guide" to basketball (if there ever was such a thing).

Strike a Pose!.......2006-10-12
If Sharon Dennis Wyeth's Orphea Proud is any indication of the direction of children's literature, may all kids henceforth be gifted with iPods, Xboxes, and Game Boys, which will undoubtedly require of them more brain cells than this book. At its best, Orphea Proud is an affront to both creative writing and the art of storytelling with its faux sincerity and patronizing passages. At its worst, it is filled with candy coated scenarios, resulting in one hundred and eighty-nine pages of potential energy that never turns kinetic. Its "life is a box full of chocolates" type of philosophy is pure fantasy, even for its intended teen audience. And its trite and cliche-filled poetry is so painful that it likens itself to nails on a chalkboard. Nothing is explored in this book, no lessons learned. Wyeth is so preoccupied with turning out a crowd pleasing novel that she seems to have forgotten the definition of the word sincerity. This book, about a girl on a path to self-discovery, is uneven and dull in its execution (it involves making the reader a part of a live audience), and features characters, including the narrator, that are drawn so thin they will remind one of the cardboard cut-outs used in place of real people in kindergarten plays.
Doesn't live up to its potential.......2004-12-20
I really, *really* wanted to like this book. It was set up like an open mic show, with a teenage girl telling the story of how she came to terms with her sexuality through narrative and poetry. She was black and her lover was white, so there was also a race dynamic in there. I'm interested in sexuality issues and racial issues and young adult novels written in creative ways, so I was super excited to read this.
While I appreciate Wyeth for bringing a Black protagonist into the gay young adult genre, and while I admire *any* writer who is willing to tackle this difficult subject for any age group, I was greatly disappointed in this book. The writing style was wishy-washy, the characters were one-dimensional and the dialogue was strained. I kept on thinking that maybe I was missing something, because I really couldn't believe that this book wasn't living up to its potential. It was melodramatic and meandering in its plot. In terms of young adult novels about discovering a gay identity, I would recommend, "Boy Meets Boy" and "The Realm of Possibility" by David Leviathan, "Annie on my Mind" by Nancy Gardner or "Empress of the World" by Sarah Ryan.
