Recent and well-publicised disasters have highlighted the fact that organisations of all kinds - from healthcare to aerospace - are critically dependent on Information Technology systems. The prevention of catastrophic I.T. failure is now an essential part of management. In this thought-provoking guide for executives and managers Richard Ennals argues that the critical factor is not technology, but people and communication.

Book Description
Since the publication of the highly-successful first edition of Earthworm Ecology, there were two international symposia and an increased number of publications on the subject, demanding a revision of the book that addresses the most rapidly developing areas of earthworm research. Earthworm Ecology, Second Edition updates the most comprehensive work available on earthworm ecology with extensive revisions of the original chapters. This well-illustrated, expansive study examines the important, and often overlooked, impact earthworms have on the environment. It discusses the impact of climate, soil properties, predation, disease and parasitism, and competition upon earthworm ecology. New chapters analyze the history of earthworm research, the importance of earthworms as representatives of soil fauna and how they affect plant growth, the effects of the invasion of exotic earthworms into North America and other regions, and vermiculture and vermicomposting in Europe and Asia. This new material makes this volume an essential reference work for soil scientists, agronomists, and others with a great interest in earthworms.

Although it has pained some professionals to admit it, gifted amateurs have done much to advance the cause of science. Perhaps nowhere is this more true, English physician Michael Salmon writes, than in the field of lepidopterology.
The figure of the eccentric butterfly collector is a staple of British comedy, and indeed, as Salmon shows, many early collectors offered easy targets as the very definition of eccentricity. Over the years, more and more ordinary men and women came to share their passion for nature study, so that, by Victorian times, households throughout Britain "boasted a cabinet of shells, butterflies, or fossils, together with a series of George Routledge's shilling volumes on natural history, or a book of newspaper cuttings from the weekly 'nature' column." By the late 19th century, the fields and woods were crowded with collectors, so many that the numbers of butterfly species like the Large Blue, Black-veined White, and Large Tortoiseshell were considerably thinned. (They and many other species are now extinct or nearly so, Salmon writes, though not through the fault of collectors.) Some collectors were indeed mere hobbyists, but field notes and reports by amateurs formed an essential record for more formal scientific descriptions of range, behavior, and other aspects of lepidopteran natural history.
In a series of essays, Salmon offers a history of butterfly collecting in Britain, describes some 35 species of particular historical or biological interest (including the wayward North American monarch and the remarkable Camberwell Beauty, "the Holy Grail of British butterfly collectors"), and profiles more than a hundred prominent "Aurelians," or butterfly collectors, from 1550 to the present. His handsomely illustrated book, brimming with lore and trivia on such matters as the first recorded use of the butterfly net and the origin of butterfly names in English, makes lively reading--and an ideal gift--for Aurelians today. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
This entertaining and informative book traces the history of butterfly collection in Britain from the seventeenth century, when the study of natural history had its beginnings. Our knowledge of butterflies is the result of four hundred years of collection and study. However, butterfly collecting is a controversial subject today, and given the present state of butterfly populations, indiscriminate gathering of specimens can no longer be justified.
In addition to giving a history of butterfly collecting in Britain, this beautifully illustrated volume describes the equipment used and gives brief biographies of 101 deceased lepidopterists. The book is generously laced with anecdotes and quotations, and includes many contemporary monochrome portraits, accounts of selected species of historical interest, and an appraisal of the effects of collecting and of current conservation policies. Appendixes list all the British and Irish butterflies with their earlier, often confusing, and sometimes fanciful vernacular names, and provide a chronological account of entomological societies, publications, and significant events in the canon of British entomology.
The Aurelian Legacy is a fascinating account of the men and women who have made valuable contributions to our knowledge of British butterflies and of their early and often complex history. It is not only a good read but also an excellent reference source for current and future lepidopterists as well as social historians.
Book Description
Eighty-eight years after their last World Series win, the Chicago White Sox made up for lost time by sweeping the Houston Astros to become the 2005 world champions of baseball. With 99 regular-season wins, the Sox brought the second-best record in baseball to the postseason. Only one loss to the Angels prevented a complete sweep in every phase of their postseason play (Division, ALCS, and World Series) to win with an impressive 11-1 record.
Believe It! celebrates the White Sox's championship season, its players, its manager, and its rich history. This book features the writing of Tribune columnists John Kass, Rick Morrissey, and Mike Downey, who provide a narrative of the season and World Series win. There are exclusive interviews with key contributorsGuillen, Konerko, Buerhle, and morein which they talk about baseball and life with the Sox. And for the statistician fans, the not-to-be-missed numbers behind the season and throughout White Sox history are included.
To paraphrase the words of Sox broadcaster Hawk Harrelson, "Put this World Series on the board . . . yes!"
Customer Reviews:

Customer Reviews:
Every American must read pg 205.......2007-06-26
I enjoyed the book, though it may not be for everyone. It was written in 1996, and on pg205 the heading reads, "Prophesies Yet To Be Fulfilled". It begins with this exact quote, "Today, once again, the world is facing a new crisis. This is (now in bold) a war of retaliation against terrorism. (end of bold) A war to save the innocent and to punish the guilty. But who is innocent and who is guilty? I pulled it off my shelf and discovered that a couple days after 9/11. Worth owning for that section alone imho.
Huh?.......2007-04-12
Interesting, but weird. Have an open mind, or don't bother. The politics of the book got me fired up. Some of the mystical content left my jaw hanging open.
From a friend of Chief Dan Evemhema.......2007-04-01
Regardless of writing style, as a Native American woman who practiced her Medicine on Third Mesa in Hopi for years I assure anyone who wishes to find the true Prophesies will find them in this book bearing Dan Evemhema's signature. Strictly for profit books on the subject, however beautifully written would not contain such pure renditions of the Prophecies, as strictly for profit books on the subject are not a part of Hopi Religious Culture. Don't be fooled. The Elders were very aware.
Keep an open mind.......2006-07-13
I was allowed to borrow this book by a friend of mine who met Dan Evehama and was taken under his wing. To those who only read or hear others at "word for word", you will ALWAYS miss the point of ANY discourse, written or spoken. This book is valuable not only for the first ever, first-hand account of this tribe's religious beliefs, but their prophecies and their politics. Those who couldn't get past Mr. Mails' zeal probably wouldn't have listened to Christ, either.
V.L.Harris, avid historian,amateur theologian
Frank Waters rules, in the matter of Hopi spirituality.......2006-06-08
I like Mails' "Mystic Warriors of the Plains" - it's in a prominent spot on my Southwestern display shelves. Don't bother with Survival Kit - read Frank Waters. "The Book of the Hopi" and "Pumpkinseed Point" are amazing expressions of the Hopi legends and world view, at once spiritual and scholarly. Frank was nominated several times for the Nobel, but never won (judges said he was "too regional" - politics in action).
When you're ready for the full dose of Native American spirituality, married masterfully with the teachings of the likes of Jung and Evans-Wentz, get "Mexico Mystique: The Coming Sixth World of Consciousness." It's a challenging read, but if you're not a dilettante, and want to look past the surface of NA spirituality, it's huge. For those reviewers who want something to live their lives by, it has a serious message, with prediction attached.

"That's what 145th Street is like. Something funny happens... and then something bad happens. It's almost as if the block is reminding itself that life is hard, and you have to take it seriously." Walter Dean Myers's book of interconnected short stories is a sweet and sour mix of the comedy and tragedy of the human condition, played out against the backdrop of the Harlem neighborhood that is centered around 145th Street. In this 'hood, teens will become acquainted with the mysterious 12-year-old Angela, whose sad dreams seem to predict the future for an unlucky few, and the fast-talking Jamie Farrell, a smooth basketball player who's praying that his streak of good luck doesn't end before he can ask out Celia Evora, "the finest chick in the school." They will chuckle at the affable Big Joe, who wants to enjoy his funeral party while he's still alive, yet feel their hearts tighten when Big Time Henson senses his drug addiction drawing him closer and closer to an early grave.
Myers frankly discusses the consequences of violence, drive-bys and gang war through his articulate characters, but tempers these episodes with such a love of his fictional community that every character shines through with the hope and strength of a survivor. Changing his point of view from teen to adult and back again through each vignette, Myers successfully builds a bridge of understanding between adolescents and adults that will help each group better understand the problems of the other. A worthy and recommended read that beautifully illustrates the good that can come out of a community that stands together. Newbery Honor-winning Myers has written more than 50 books, including Monster and Fallen Angels. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

145th street.......2006-12-31
The book 145th street has a lot of short stories. And many things happened in 145th street one block, that do not happen anywhere in the world. Some of the stories are funny or in some of them something bad happen. But all stories teach us a lesson. Also, help us to undertand real life, because life is not easy is hard and if we want to survive in this world we have to take life seriously. The most interesting stories in this book are first, Big Joe's funeral, second, fighter and third, Angela's Eyes.
For many reasons, these stories Big Joe's funeral, Figher and Angela's Eyes are the most interesting stories in the book. First, Big Joe's Funeral is about that Joe decided to cancel his life insurance, because he has been paying for it twenty years. Finally he decided to canceled his insurance and the insurance company will pay him. This story was funny because he decided to have he is own funeral, and also because he was peeling potatoes for his own funeral. The second most interesting story was Fighter. It was interesting, because teach us a lesson. It is about a young husban who was named Billy Giles and he has a wife and a little cute baby. Bill Giles has to boxing to bring money to his family, because he did not study and that is why he had to fight. Him wife Johnnie Mae knows that her husband is going to fight again and she was crying, because it is possible that something bad happened to her husban. Finally, Bill Giles get hurt, but his wife always give support to him. The third most interesting story was Angela's Eyes. It is about, a girl named Andela who has 12 years old. Also this story is mysterious because Angela with her dreams she will predict the future, for an unlucky few.
In Conclusion, this book is interesting, because all the short stories tell us a moral or a lesson. In other way help us to take reaction in life and show us how hard is life. But in the same way the book tell us a funny stories that do not happened any where alse in the world. For all those reasons the people who read this book recomend it.

(Big Joe's funeral)
This book has many stories in this chapter it about big Joe's funeral. Many things happened in 145th that don't happen anywhere in the world. But of course ha, ha, ha, this is New York
And it is 145th and anything happens there. When I heard about Big Joe's funeral it didn't take me by surprise.
Joe's funeral took place on one of the most beautiful day of the year. And one of the hottest day of the year. That is why everyone was watching the fire works out their fire escapes and trying to catch a breeze with an ice tea in your hand.
Ms. Peaches Jones who is fifteen year's old was definitely wrong because she didn't give Joe any respect. A person ought to have respect for other people all of the time, but especially at two times during their life. The first time is when they are born. When a baby is born you shouldn't say discouraging this about it like what my grandma use to say always respect the living at time of life because when they gone they gone for ever.
Big Joe owns a Bar-B-que and burger restaurant. He decided to cancel his life insurance because he has been paying for it for twenty years. If he canceled his insurance the insurance company will pay him. Than when he got the check 2 weeks later for the amount of eighteen thousand dollars that is when he decided to have a funeral.
It was funny that he was peeling potatoes in his own restaurant for his own funereal. No one know what Joe meant by having his own funeral party up to he explain it to people and it made sense to them, he throw himself a funeral the awesome people throw a party. Then he went to the funeral home to have someone arrange his funeral. At first Mr.tuener didn't think about it but when he saw that live people were having funerals would greatly increase his business and he said okay.
This is call am doing my own funeral wall I am alive cuz I want it my way not celebrity my death way I am dead and Turing out a mess.
145th Street.......2005-07-20
I think i should give this to my sister cause she likes books with stories in it because im in to action books that involve drugs and guns and girls and robbings stuff like that dont get me wrong it was an ok book but i just dont like reading a story and then i get into to it but then it cuts into a whole other story i wouldved really liked it but it just cuts out the story and i dont like stories in a book i like it to be one main subject thru the whole book for u can get into to it and see what happens i knew what was gonna happen in this book it was gonna get good then it was gonna change stories
Fat Joe's wedding .......2005-05-05
This stories theme was about keeping the good friends you have and gathering together!
145th Street Stories.......2004-10-04
I liked the book because it was funny. All the short stories are a good length, and they all can make you laugh. My favorite story will have to be Monkey Man. Monkey Man had saved a girl from a gang named the Tigros. After that, the tigros wanted to get Monkey Man. Monkey Man told tem to met him in the park, and so the did. He was not serially hurt. Later he was stabbed. He survived. I would recommend this book to others because it was funny.

Book Description
WALTER DEAN MYERS returns to the world of 145th Street: Short Stories to show how love can be found, and thrive, in the most unlikely places. Curtis finds love in Iraq as he struggles to stay alive in a war he doesn't want to fight, and Letha discovers her own beauty in the love of her child. There is the "good daughter" who realizes that there's only one way to help her brother and her family. Other stories center on the daily drama of the Curl-E-Que beauty shop, or capture the slapstick side of passion.

Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-09-11
I really enjoyed 145th Street: Short Stories when it came out quite a few years ago, so I was anxious to read this new collection of stories. Once again, Walter Dean Myers takes readers into the world on 145th Street. WHAT THEY FOUND revisits the characters of the previous short stories and updates their lives.
The central theme of WHAT THEY FOUND is love. Each story shares a relationship - romantic love, sibling love, parental love, and more. The stories are flavored with Harlem life as only Myers is able to capture.
There's the frustration of loving a brother who is a constant disappointment to the family. Leading a life of drugs and crime takes its toll on love.
There are relationships in the making and relationships beginning to crumble. Myers describes the tough love of women raising babies alone or trying everything to hang onto the father of a child. Some relationships beat the odds stacked against them, while others continue to exist only in dreams.
The final chapter attempts to explain the frightening need for love while facing the world beyond our own front yard. A young soldier from the Harlem neighborhood struggles to survive physically and emotionally in the middle of the violence in Afghanistan. Love offers an oasis from the horrors of war.
Each chapter shares a story and many of them overlap and intertwine as readers are reacquainted with the neighborhood of 145th Street. WHAT THEY FOUND is a welcome companion to the first collection or stands very strongly on its own.
