    4 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2003-11-29

A friend heard this author speak at a conference and said I had to get a copy of this book (she wouldn't part with hers). I love it! It's like talking with 30 business women who've been there - and hearing in their own words how they deal with work/life balance issues. It made me feel so good to know I'm not the only one struggling - and helped me develop my own checklist of things that will work in my life. I'm giving copies to two friends at work and my boss for Christmas!

4 out of 5 stars Finally - The Real Truth!!.......2003-11-27

I feel validated and finally have some real suggestions that will help me achieve balance in my life! It's hard to believe that this book was pulled together in only eight days. It's personal, professional, and heartfelt. If only the women in my company would be as brave as the women in this book!

    5 out of 5 stars Wow! Insightful & Useful!!!.......2003-11-26

I couldn't put this book down! I've been working in large corporations for nearly 15 years and have two grade school children. I didn't think anyone understood what I was going through but now I know that I am not alone. I found many strategies in the book that will work for me - the workbook was incredible! Thank you to the executive women who put this together so that I can achieve work/life balance!!

    Book Description

Every year Americans use a staggering five hundred million pounds of toxic pesticides in and around their homes, schools, parks, and roads--a growing health risk for people and the environment. But are these poisons really necessary? This book, appealing to the hunter in us all, shows how to triumph in combat with pests without losing the war to toxic chemicals. Tiny Game Hunting, written in a lively and entertaining style and illustrated with detailed drawings, gives more than two hundred tried-and-true ways to control or kill common household and garden pests without using toxic pesticides.

    5 out of 5 stars Goodbye Gophers!.......2005-08-25

Tiny game hunting was the only book that covered getting rid of gophers extensively. All other books had one sentence. I tried the tips they suggested and it worked. I felt better reading this book and knowing I am not alone.

I learned a lot about taking care of my front yard and when various pests come onto the scene. This book was suggested to me by the clerk at the library who also had good results in getting rid of a pest.

The book also has some cute drawings of the various pests. This is the book for anyone who wants to follow the healthy and environmentally safe way to keep unwanted pests from their lawns and gardens.

5 out of 5 stars Lose the Poisons, Gain Health.......2002-05-28

This book was just what I was looking for to keep my medium-sized yard and tiny garden in shape without adding to the chemical burden of my home town. I got accurate, easy advice that turned out in most cases to be more effective and less work than spraying with a chemical cocktail. Now I'm purchasing a copy for my neighbor, in the hopes that he'll see the light.

5 out of 5 stars Tiny Game Hunting... two thumbs way up!.......2000-03-02

This could be the most useful book I own. It gets more use than my dictionary. Tiny Game Hunting offers practical and effective methods of capturing or killing common household and garden pests; everying from insects and spiders, to lizards and smakes, and mice and gophers. It focuses on environmentally safe extermination methods. Many of the traps, repellents, and pesticides can be made cheaply with common items found in the kitchen or garage. More than just pest control, the book offers some basic information on the habits and history of the critters. Have a problem with a pest? I bet it's in here. It's honestly one of the best books I'll ever own!

Statistics are to baseball as nails are to carpentry: they define, inform, and hold the game together. When the teams fly south for spring training, fans, eager to sort through and argue over the numbers, flock to the sports shelves for the statistics. The Sports Encyclopedia has what baseball aficionados want. From 1901 through 1997, the reference supplies updated and revised lifetime numbers for every player, plus seasonal summaries of each team's performance. In addition, there are details of every playoff and World Series game ever played, profiles of every no-hitter since 1901, updated stats on RBIs, on-base percentages, and fielding, plus classic baseball legends and intriguing trivia. As salaries and sports politics get murky, it's refreshing to surround yourself with pages and pages of solid, quantitative information.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars All the essentials, excellent value.......2006-03-18

This is a reasonably-priced, excellent reference book.

The encyclopedia has a half-page essay for each year from 1901-2005, individual stats grouped by year and team, career stats, annual leaders, active leaders as of 2006, and much more. This is the 25rd edition of a classic which provides all the essentials of 20th and 21st century baseball in a managable size and easy-to-use format.

Here are some things I particularly liked:
          * Article summaries of each season.
          * Separate articles for the postseason starting in 1998
          * The player statistics are organized by year and team, a very useful alternative to Total Baseball.
          * Reasonable price.

Here are some things I wish were different:
          * The 19th century is barely acknowledged.
          * On-base average is not included, a major omission.
          * The All-star Game are not included.

This book is not nearly as comprehesive as Total Baseball, but delivers the essentials at less than half the cost.

5 out of 5 stars The only baseball book you'll ever need.......2006-02-10

I received the 2004 edition of this book as a graduation gift and picked up the 2005 edition soon after. I was amazed by just how in depth it is. This book gives you season by season recaps from 1876 to the present, complete standings and player stats for each of respective seasons, league leader charts, a complete player index broken down by decade etc. It's unbelievable how much research the authors have done and that they were able to fit it all into one thick volume.

As other reviewers have stated there are typos in the book and the print is a little small, but you'll be too lost in statistical heaven to notice. Another drawback is after you've picked up one edition of the book it seems kind of a waste to pick up a current edition because you're only getting a recap of the previous season, 2005 lets say, and not much else. The authors don't go back and revise old sections; they just plough ahead and give you basic updated stats from the previous season.

If you're looking for a baseball book about a specific team, season, player, or one with quirky statistics, this probably isn't the way to go. But if you're looking for a baseball book with cold hard statistics, Buy it now and don't bother looking for other books about this great game.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book, But..........2003-02-26

I bought the 2003 edition of The Sports Encyclopedia: Baseball today, & as usual am overall pleased with the wealth of information in this very valuable book. However, there are a few problems which the editors need to resolve for future editions. This series has always been plagued by poor editing & typos, & the 2003 edition is no exception. In fact, there is one HUGE error that should never have gotten past whoever edited this edition. Turn to page 700 & you'll see it: instead of the statistics for the 2002 NL Championship Series between St. Louis & San Francisco the ones for the 2001 NLCS between Arizona & Atlanta have been reprinted. Someone should have caught this major blunder.Since this annual series does have typos & errors (what book with so much info doesn't?) the editors should provide their readers with an e-mail or snail mail address to notify them of mistakes so they can be corrected. I was able to do so in the 1980s & several errors were corrected. I hope the editors will be open to input from their readers once again, for that only strengthens the factual integrity of the book.I'm sure there are other mistakes but the one above is the reason I give The Sports Encyclopedia: Baseball 2003 a rating of 4 instead of 5. It will make a good addition to your baseball reference library, but it's probably a good idea to have another encylopedia handy to doublecheck the info. Trust, but verify, with all these huge statistical books, I say.

4 out of 5 stars my review was for the 2000 edition.......2002-06-25

I published a review for the 2000 edition of this book not 2001 or 2002. Many of the reviews listed under this edition are for earlier editions and some comments may not pertain. Books like this one can change dramatically from year to year. Errors could be corrected, new errors introduced and there is always a whole new season of statistics that has an effect on the flavor of the book. For instance 2002 was the year that Bonds broke McGwire's homerun record, so I am sure that there is coverage of that. These books are not worth buying every year. But these authors do a credible job and I would expect this to be of similar quality to the one I own. I would suggest buying a copy once every 5 years if you are a baseball enthusiast and only every year if you are a fanatic. However for sports statistic fanatics it may be that Total Baseball has more information.

4 out of 5 stars Great source for everything since 1901..........2001-07-29

This book does a great job of giving a one-source place to see how every player did for a particular team in a particular year.

If you're not particularly interested in what happened before 1901, this is a must-have. But being an amateur student of 19th century baseball, I do wish they'd expand their coverage to at least go back to 1876, including the start of the National League, and include other recognized major leagues before 1901 (the American Association, Players League and Union Association).

I give it five stars for what it does since 1901. But because "major league" baseball goes back to 1876 and arguably 1871 (with the National Association), I have to take a star away because it feels "incomplete."

A wide range of accommodation information, from youth hostels to luxury hotels, help visitors find the best place to stay for their budget. Separate sections describe areas outside of London and each of the city's districts, such as Piccadilly and SOHO. Book Review

Kat's Fall by Shelley Hrdlitschka is a teen fiction book, which was published

in 2004 by Orca Book Publishers. The story takes places in Hope Springs, a

town in the U.S.A. The main characters in the book are Darcy Murphy a

fifteen year-old boy and his sister Kat an eleven year-old girl who is deaf.

Their mother has been in jail for ten years convicted of throwing Kat off a

fifth floor balcony when she was a baby. Now she has been freed and has

come back to live in Hope Springs. By the end of the book, Darcy finds out

that his mother is innocent and that he threw his sister from the balcony. His

teacher helps him to write a letter to the newspaper explaining this. Now, he

doesn't feel so guilty about what he did when he was a little boy and the

people in the town don't hate his mother anymore.

I like this book because it was so interesting that I kept reading and could

not put it down. So much happens in the book and it really made me think about

some of the bad things that can happen in people's lives. The book is well written

but like all books, it has its strengths and weaknesses.

There is strong characterization the story. The characters in the
book are very different from each other and are believable. For instance, I

think Darcy is really mixed up, because he thinks his mother tried to kill his

sister. He goes to a special school for students who behave badly but the

author shows his good side too. He looks after his deaf sister and he works

after school baby-sitting a deaf 4 year-old girl. Kat too is a strong character.

She has her deafness to overcome but she is usually happy and does not act

out. Another strength of the book is its realistic language. Darcy uses some bad

words but the author uses them because teenagers use them in real life. I

also think it is realistic when Darcy cuts his arm when his girlfriend leaves him.

The art work on the cover of the book is really good. The photograph is

taken from the bottom of the apartment building looking up. It makes you

think about how far Kat fell when she was thrown. The letters of the title

also look as if they're falling. "So," The art work and the theme of the book go

                  together.

Some parts of the plot are weak: for instance, when the little girl says she

has been hurt by somebody whose name begins with " D ", Darcy is accused

of sexual abuse. Why didn't the police woman ask her if it was Darcy right at

the beginning? I also feel that Darcy's mother is not believable. I don't think she

would have taken the blame for Kat's fall and gone to prison. She knew that

Darcy would be forgiven because he was only 4 year-old. Going to prison meant

she would not with her family for ten years. Darcy's father is also difficult to

understand: if he didn't want to look after Darcy and Kat, why didn't he ask

for help from social services? Darcy was too young to have brought up his

                  sister.

This book is worth reading. There are more strengths than weaknesses. Actually

many of friends have read this book, they also said this is a good book to read and

                  learn more words.

4 out of 5 stars worth reading book =).......2005-06-10

In this story, it is about a little girl was thrown down the balcony and the mother was accused of doing so. Darcy (the son) and Kat (the daughter) had grown up with their father who didn't really care much about their kids because Kat was deaf, and only Darcy knew how to communicate with her. Kat and her brother's relationship had been quite close with each other until one day they found out that their mom was coming out of jail. In Darcy's life, there were a lot of tensions and pains and the only to cop with it is to self-injure himself which later on had lead him into a lot of distress. Personally I found out that sometimes it's just really hard for someone to be honest, especially when it is a lie that will bring hatred between my friends and me. But after reading this book, I think it is important to tell the truth always, because things don't turn as bad as we thought it would be. We'll be pleased everyday, able to be with our friends freely and more happily. I think this book should be recommended for everyone because it is a really interesting book, for teenagers, it tells us how to cop our problems correctly, and for parents it tells them what kids are going through in their lives. And of course, the lesson that'll be taught at the end, everyone should use it in his or her daily lives.
