Customer Reviews:
good historic advice.......2006-11-05
I like this book because it is very much based in the practicalities of the farm/homesteading life. It seems the author really knows his stuff. He makes use of some fairly anitquarian ideas and obscure sources that provide interesting relevant information. This book cover a great deal for its' some 250 pages. It covers everything from fish farming, to well drilling, the hydrologic cycle, planting schedules, fence building, stump removal, soil science and a lot more. Though some is a bit dated this is a good reference with lots of useful information.
Tries to be revolutionary, fails.......2005-07-30
I bought this book because I hoped it would be as good as Ken Kern's better known "The Owner-Built Home" (which is fantastic). It's not. Throughout most of this book, it seems like the Kerns challenge conventional wisdom just because it's conventional, not because they have any reason to do so. This is, of course, the total opposite of most farming/homesteading books, which recommend going back to the conventional wisdom that brought our ancestors through 8,000 years of agriculture, and continued to work until 100 years ago (and continues to work today in Amish communities and amongst successful homesteaders).
That said, this book does contain some useful information; I found the chapter on aquaculture to be particularly informative. There's also a lot of good material on planning. Certainly, there's nothing in here that can be called exhaustive or complete, but that's not be expected from a book like this; it's an introduction, a jumping-off point. I just wish the Kerns had spent less time trying to make themselves out to be great agricultural revolutionaries, had cut the psycho-babble about "ecto-space," and had kept to serious, concrete plans and ideas that could be demonstrated to have some merit other than their mere difference from the accepted norm.
Awesome book!.......2004-09-10
I want to homestead, become as self-sustaining as possible, get off the grid. Of the many books I've read on these subjects, The Owner-Built Homestead is by far the best. It is written by people who have done it themselves. They explain everything you need to know and gives you examples of how to do things as efficiently as possible to save you time, energy, and money. They tell it like it is so that you are prepared for the reality of being self-sufficient. They cover everything - from finding land and the different things to you can do with it, to building a workshop, a home, a barn, to how to locate different sources of water and how to make use of them - and much much more. They cover the whys of doing things, and both the right AND the wrong way of how to go about doing things. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about becoming a homesteader.

Book Description
In an era when parents and kids are overwhelmed by a sports-crazed, win-at-all-costs culture, here is a comprehensive guide that helps parents ensure a positive sports experience for their children. In Whose Game Is It, Anyway? two of the country's leading youth sports psychologists team up with a former Olympic athlete and expert on performance enhancement to share what they have gleaned in more than forty years of combined experience. The result is a book unique in its message, format, and scope. Through moving case studies and thoughtful analyses, Ginsburg, Durant, and Baltzell advocate a preventive approach through a simple three-step program: know yourself, know your child, know the environment. They look at children in age groups, identifying the physical, psychological, and emotional issues unique to each group and clarifying what parents can expect from and desire for their kids at every stage. They also explore myriad relevant topics, including parental pressure, losing teams, steroid use, the overscheduled child, and much more. Illuminating, impassioned, and inspiring, Whose Game Is It, Anyway? is required reading for anyone raisingor educatinga child who participates in sports.
Customer Reviews:
Featured book in my newsletter this month.......2007-09-24
This book is one stop shopping for parents and coaches. In simple language with ample case studies, Whose Game Is It Anyways, covers everything, positive and negative, that adults need to know when working with youth in sports. Everything from child developmental psychology to difficult conversations with coaches and parents is covered in a no nonsense manner. I refer to this book often in a workshop I call "For the Love of the Game".
An Excellent Read.......2007-02-09
Disclosure: I'm personally acquainted with one of the authors.
For parents who have kids who aren't particularly athletic, this book can be an entertaining read, but it's not intended to show parents how to make athletes out of kids who have no aptitude or interest. I have no children at all, but I did enjoy reading the book for its anecdotes and insights.
The book's authors, clinical psychologists with plenty of hands-on experience coaching youth, give authority to common sense ideas that many well-read, psychologically sophisticated parents tend to honor more often in the breach than the observance. One hopes that this book will stimulate such parents -- who, no matter how intelligent, frequently fail to appreciate the intensity of the pressures besetting young people -- to more thoughtfully evaluate the actual influence of organized athletic activities on the development of their children.
The book is commendable for its relaxed, informal style and its refusal to prescribe bromides so typical of "self-help" books. There are no easy fixes for the myriad problems associated with growing up. But this book contains valuable advice to parents to assist them in helping their children who are involved in organized sports to (1) maximize the value of their positive experiences, and (2) acquire a healthy perspective towards the negative experiences that are an inevitable component of childhood.
Mother of two in San Francisco.......2007-02-07
I think this book is great. As the mother of two young girls, both of whom are participating in sports, I am grateful for the guidance it offers. Sports have played a hugely beneficial role in my own life and I want the same for my daughters. I intend to re-read it every year, and have ordered several for all my friends with kids!
A superb resource for any parent with children who play sports.......2006-04-07
As a clinical psychologist, sports fan and father of 3 young children, I found this book to be an extraordinary resource for any parent who wants their children to get the most out of sports, at any age. It is an extremely well written and organized book by a leading expert in the field of sports psychology and child development. I highly recommend it.
Great Book .......2006-04-04
This book is helping me and my son to conquer the obstacles that are set in his way. This book is helping him to follow his dreams and have fun playing the sports that he loves. It is helping me with my role as a parent of an athletic child. I am so glad for the publication of this book. I could have used it 5 years ago. At times things can get very difficult; that is why we need this book to help us through our problems. The book should be mandatory for every person involved in the development of an athletic child.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting.......2002-04-19
This book should be called Zoey needs to make up her mind. Or better yet, Problems with the Passmores. Zoey is being very annoying. At first, she doesn't like lucas pressuring her for sex. Then she gets upset when he doesn't pressure her for sex. Zoey get a grip. I don't even know where to begin with Benjamin, except for pathetic. I understand him being disappointed about the surgery; Hoever, he has no right to shut out Nina. Especially, since he took something from Nina that she will never get back. He is being self centering and shallow. I not even going to start on Aaron.
don't tell zoey.......2000-06-26
Another Winner.......1999-06-30
Applegate has done it again! Book 13 is just as good, if not better, than the other books in this series. Benjaman is in deep depression over the fact that his eye operation didn't work out, and Nina can't seem to cheer him up. An old family friend, Kate Levin, is coming to stay at Lucas' house until the situation with her dorm clears up. Zoey is definitely not liking the VERY pretty redhead. Claire is deleriously happy over her relationship with Aaron. Things are going great between them... and she has a surprise for him on Valentine's Day. However, things fall apart for more than just one couple on what should be a romantic evening. Watch out, because Don't Tell Zoey ends with a bang!
These books are incredible!.......1999-06-24
The Making Out series are the best books I've ever read. The characters are so realistic. They also have the same problems as most teenagers. I'll admit, the first book started out a little slow, but once I got in to it - I couldn't get out! (For some reason I can't find the books here, but my granny mails them to me from the U.S.) They're definitely worth the wait. They couln't be better!
This is another excellent book by Katherine Applegate........1999-06-17
Don't Tell Zoey is another great book from the making out series. Katherine Applegate once again keeps the story exciting by the characters unbelievable actions. I can absolutly not wait until the next book in the series to come out. This series is the best!
