Seller really cares!.......2007-09-16
This product never arrived but the seller gave me all my money back as well as a credit to use for another purchase from them. Very caring people when the customer is not satisfied!
essentials of soil mechanics.......2006-11-11
Can't review a book I have NOT received. When will it be delivered? Lolly Pinkston
Good for AM portion of PE Exam and PM portion of Geotechnical.......2006-09-26
Even though Index is not that great like CERM (Civil Engineering Reference Manual, you can still find valuable examples and basic concepts that PE Exam requires.
Best of Luck.
Excellent Resource.......2000-11-18
I found Mr. McCarthy's book to be a valuable resource. From a geologist's perspective, it was of great help in bridging the gap between engineering geology and geotechnical engineering. It gave me greater insight into not only field technique, but also into geologic considerations that are of importance in foundation design. The text was both concise and clearly written.
From a Civil/Geological Engineering student's view..........2000-05-03
* Poor index - no detail * Good detail in text on subjects covered * Has some errors in the chapter on flownets * Disjointed in discussion of compaction * Good for students with little to no soil mechanics background

Book Description
Many current soil science textbooks cater for a traditional student market where able students embark on three years study in a narrow discipline. Today most degree schemes are modular and subjects such as soil science are taught as self-standing units in the first year alone. Students are less willing to read and purchase books and require informative revision textbooks which aid in passing exams. If students study soil science beyond their first year there are a variety of good textbooks to choose from on specialist topics. In reality few students study soil science to a higher level therefore this textbook would be popular both for its format and its relevance to a large population of environmental type students.
Customer Reviews:
An outstanding reference.......2002-10-27
Are you concerned about the amount of damage to your hedges, your roses, your flowers, your trees and other plants? Have you automatically reached for your organic or chemical pesticides, herbacides, fertilizers, and anything else to use to salvage what is left of your plants? Do you advise others on their problems with plants? In solving these problems, does your solution address the root cause or merely the symptoms? In seven chapters of 185 pages, the authors take the reader from the question "What are soils made from?" to a thorough discussion of "soil contamination and erosion." The topic of each chapter and sub-chapter is presented in question form: "How does water act in the soil?" "What is soil acidity?" and the questions are answered: "Instinctively we all know what is meant when we say something is acidic--we automatically think about lemon juice or vinegar..."
The authors use a substantial number of charts, graphs, drawings, and black and white pictures to achieve their stated purpose: "Every attempt has been made to assume no previous scientific knowledge, to insure new concepts are explained simply, often using examples of everyday items, and anything considered too detailed for the average undergradate course has been ruthlessly cut from the text."
Relying on my recollection of various undergraduate college survey or introduction courses to biology, botony, chemistry, and my experiences of growing roses, flowers, shrubs and vegetables, I gained a basic understanding of the science of soils, and the impact errors in soil management have on plants. Too many times I have attempted to treat the symptoms of sick plants and not the root causes: "Chapter 6: How can we optimize the physical condition of the soil for plant growth?" "What can we do to remediage a polluted site?"
When the authors conclude their presentation on page 185, we are presented five pages of other references including numerous internet web pages more than seven pages of index. The cost of the book is a lot, and in my opinion, worth every cent!

Book Description
Toxic chemicals can exert effects on all levels of the biological hierarchy, from cells to organs to organisms to populations to entire ecosystems. However, most risk assessment models express their results in terms of effects on individual organisms, without corresponding information on how populations, groups of species, or whole ecosystems may respond to chemical stressors. Ecological Modeling in Risk Assessment: Chemical Effects on Populations, Ecosystems, and Landscapes takes a new approach by compiling and evaluating models that can be used in assessing risk at the population, ecosystem, and landscape levels. The authors give an overview of the current process of ecological risk assessment for toxic chemicals and of how modeling of populations, ecosystems, and landscapes could improve the status quo. They present a classification of ecological models and explain the differences between population, ecosystem, landscape, and toxicity-extrapolation models. The authors describe the model evaluation process and define evaluation criteria. Finally, the results of the model evaluations are presented in a concise format with recommendations on modeling approaches to use now and develop further. The authors present and evaluate various models on the basis of their realism and complexity, prediction of relevant assessment endpoints, treatment of uncertainty, regulatory acceptance, resource efficiency, and other criteria. They provide models that will improve the ecological relevance of risk assessments and make data collection more cost-effective. Ecological Modeling in Risk Assessment serves as a reference for selecting and applying the best models when performing a risk assessment.

very practical and thorough.......2007-03-09
this was recommended to me by a very experienced RV camper as one of the best authors for camping guides. I was not disappointed.
It is exactly what I sought.......2007-02-14
This book explains very well the risk of the voyage. It gives very good tricks. One suggests there a way to take and there is the list of all the camp-site. Very nice purchase for me.
Probably The Best on The Baja.......2005-03-20
It is the best book on Camping in Mexico's Baja that I've seen.
I especially liked the section on "Puerto Penasco" which is very
seldom included in any RV book. If you only buy one book on RV'ing in the BAJA, make sure this is the one.

Book Description
In a reassuring bedtime story by a beloved picture-book illustrator, little James learns how his dark room can be a fun and fanciful theater for shadow pictures.
Mommy and Daddy come running when eerie, flickering shapes give James a fright. Is there a MONSTER in his room? No, just shadows. James's parents can make shadow shapes, too-and soon a menagerie of friendly shadow animals dance across his bedroom wall, acting out a funny story.
Now James is not afraid anymore, but he can't resist a little shadow play himself before snuggling down to sleep. This endearing story about comforting childhood anxieties will ring true to any parent and provide inspiration for hours of family fun-at bedtime or anytime.
Customer Reviews:
Very cute and great book to help with shadows.......2005-01-21
If you have a little one that has trouble falling asleep because of shadows in the room. you really need this book. James, the little tiny boy in the story is frightened by the shadows and thinks they are monsters. So, his parents come in and make up a story using hand shadows to help James with his fears. It's very cute and even demonstrates how to make the shadow puppets. In the end, little James makes the puppets himself after his parents leave and says goodnight to all the animals and spiders in the story. It's very cute seeing him jump up and down on his bed, making shadow monsters. He winds up going to sleep very peacefully after figuring out how to make the shadows. It's been a very helpful book in our house and a very great idea for a children's book. Great find!
Shadow night.......2001-07-29
Neat concept, combining a story with shadow play (pictorial) "instructions." A young boy becomes frightened by monsters in his room--shadows from his bedroom curtains. His parents show him that it is only a shadow, then tell a shadow story. Chorao nicely integrates "shadow how-to's" into the story for those readers who may be inspired to tell there own shadow stories!

Customer Reviews:
interesting.......2007-04-25
Although there were some weaknesses regarding the character developement of the adults in modern time in this book, the novel's main strength lay in it's vivid discription of the old Pennsylvania woods, and the sympathetic and realistic way in which the Lennape Indians are portrayed. They are not shown as noble savages, but as an actual culture, with faults and strengths of its own. Kip and Maggie, were also very well developed characters. Although the author never outright explains Kip's feelings about the tragedy that occured, they are present throughout the book and serve as Kip's main drive in wanting to run away to the past. This book was very good, and i also particularly liked the way that it concentrated more on indian culture at the time, and not european culture in America, because there are enough books on European settlers, and not enough sympathetic and accurate portrayals of American Indians. This book was a very enjoyable read.
Tentative time travel story.......2002-02-05
The combination of its story about time travel to the French and Indian War and the Indian adoption of a white teen is what led me to read "Dark Shade." Overall, I was a little disappointed in the book, mainly because I didn't like how tentative the main character, Maggie, was about her time travelling adventures. I think it would have been a more intriguing story if Maggie had been allowed to more fully explore the 18th century world she stumbled in upon. Instead she only makes hestitant steps into it. Maggie's tentative reaction is probably a realistic one, but, since time travel stories are pure fantasy anyway, her reaction is not a particularly interesting one. Also I thought the sudden appearance of romantic feelings between two characters, who barely interact with each other throughout the book, came across as tacked on and contrived.
However, "Dark Shade" does have one great strength- the author's wonderfully detailed description of the primeval forest that once stretched across Pennsylvannia. Thanks to Ms. Curry's description, the reader can almost see, smell, and feel that dark, ancient, and never-ending forest. Also the author reminds the reader that people in the 18th century weren't so big on bathing so that their aroma must have been rather pungent.
DARK SHADE.......2001-03-24
Dark Shade is about a girl named Maggie Gilmour and how she fells into a hole that goes back in time when there was Indian tribes. It was summer when this all happen.Maggie was 16, in school she takes American literature program that will prepare her to study veterinary medicine, like her dad. In class with her is Kip, a childhood companion, who is now a silent presence, ever since a fire that left him scarred physically and emotionally. She follows Kip into the forest near their western Pennsylvania home.Kip fell into a hole Maggie thought Kip lost her. Maggie falls into the same hole Kip falls in and she notices that every thing is differant from the place she was before she fell into the hole.It is a dark forest and there is lots of trees. Maggie founds out she has falling into time. She sees indians tribes and Kip. he does not want to leave the tribe, but Maggie does want to leave and go back home.Maggie finds she must save a Scots soldier of the War and find a way to free her friend Kip from the Lenape Indians, so they cound go home. At first Kip wants to stay, but every thing started getting rough, like war between the Indians and the French. They get away and they never forget that day they fall in time.
