5 out of 5 stars It really hits Home!.......2001-02-17

When I sat down with this book, I thought that I would read the first couple of pages for the night. However, this book hit so many personal aspects of my life that I was into four chapters before I put the book down.

Not only does it illustrate what women are faced with in this day and age, but it shows that each one of us are different and yet, we are all trying to accomplish one goal. This book is making me come to terms with money management issues that I have been ignoring for some time. But, it also lets me know that I am not alone.

I like the step by step approach that the author has taken to help us look at ourselves and to help us set realistic goals for ourselves.

This book is a must for all women, whether you are trying to make it on your own or you are trying to get out of the shadows of your spouse. You are not alone. Read it and enjoy some truly remarkable ideas for a better tomorrow.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! A Book about Money with a Sense of Perspective.......2001-02-08

When I first bought this book, I expected yet another book on maximizing your wealth, to the exclusion of any other consideration. But I was intrigued by the book's claims that it was written specifically for women, so I bought it.

This book understands that many of my goals and values are qualitative and are not specifically tied to my net asset value. But it also realizes that income and wealth can directly affect my ability to do the things I do find important, whether it is allowing me to contribute to my favorite charity, taking that much needed trip to Paris every other year or making sure I have the flexibility a few years from now to choose a different career.

I liked the practical step by step approach, the fact that it addressed all aspects of wealth management from judicious use of debt to saving and investing to understanding your spending to maximizing your employment income and opportunities. As someone no longer in her twenties, I also appreciated that for once their was a book with a practical guide to getting started that was geared toward starting at any age.

Much like the periodic reviews it advocates, I am going to put this book on my calendar and return to it once a year to make sure my life goals and my financial goals are still aligned.

I highly recommend this for women of any age who want to gain a healthy perspective on money and wealth.

      Book Description

International agricultural research is expanding beyond the development of annual crop technologies for individual farms to the development of longer-term natural resource management techniques for entire landscapes. But technologies or practices with a long lag time between investment and returns are unlikely to be adopted by farmers unless they have secure rights to the underlying resources (property rights). Similarly, technologies that span multiple farms are unlikely to be adopted unless neighbors and groups work together (collective action). But little is known about the way property rights and collective action in developing countries mediate the adoption of technologies by farmers and groups.

To address this information gap, this volume brings together international experts in economics, sociology, and natural resource management to examine the links among property rights, collective action, and technological change for a variety of technologies across a range of community contexts in the developing world. Authors focus on the reciprocal relationships between community institutions and technologies, the role of property rights in conflicts between crop and livestock production systems, and the way that collective action differs across landscapes. A conceptual framework, methodological approaches, and "best bet"practices are presented to help guide future research.

Researchers, policy analysts, and students interested in the links between environmental sustainability, economic growth, equity and poverty alleviation, and technology adoption will benefit from this volume.

          Book Description

This book presents a series of computer-drawn maps and tables for all eclipses of the Sun calculated to have been observable in East Asia in the 3400 years from 1500 BC to AD 1900. The study of past eclipses is a useful tool in determining the long-term behaviour of astronomical phenomena, such as the Earth’s rate of rotation and the size of the Sun. The eclipses of the Sun that occurred in East Asia - notably in China, Korea and Japan - are particularly useful because written records of them exist. An introduction explains the methods used to calculate the parameters and determine the trajectories of each eclipse. Then follow the maps themselves, 862 in all, which plot the path of the umbral region over East Asia and tabulate the longitude, limits of latitude, local time and mean altitude for each event.

5 out of 5 stars A wealth of information and by a great author(s).......2007-06-27

I first purchased "The Fighter's Body: An Owner's Manual: Your Guide to Diet, Nutrition, Exercise and Excellence in the Martial Arts" and found it to be very practical and focused on what I needed to focus on as a studying martial artists. I followed this book up with:
              - Timing in the Fighting Arts: Your Guide to Winning in the Ring and Surviving on the Street
              - Solo Training: The Martial Artist's Guide to Training Alone
              - Fighter's Fact Book: Over 400 Concepts, Principles, and Drills to Make You a Better Fighter

All of these are great books and I look forward to selling my house (I had to hide Bob from perspective buyers... that face!) so that I can put Bob in my new garage and start abusing him with all of these new concepts... one by one... it will take a while!

              Thanks!

              1 out of 5 stars Blah!.......2007-05-14

This book was everything you already knew, put into writing. I diagree with a few of the techniques, but that is because I prectice muay thai not tae kwon do. I also thought there was lots of stuff that was left out of the book. There are lots of things you can do at your house to train for martial arts that were not included in this book. I recoment you go get the Bas Rutten martial arts work out. You'll love it if you are serious.

              4 out of 5 stars Enlighting!.......2006-07-06

The ideas and training was really helpful, a good tool for training at home when you have no partner to train with.

2 out of 5 stars Not very useful for me.......2006-06-28

I agree, solo practice is very important. If you have no clue what you could practice alone, are training karate / tkd / krav maga, and fairly novice, there might be some good drills for you.

If you train something "softer", or martial arts that emphasize body unity (Chinese MA, Judo, Aikido, systema etc), this is probably not your book.

A problem whith this book is that it has plenty of drills, but the detailed instructions on the techniques are lacking. This is OK if you assume the reader has trained longer, or atleast gets the details from their own teacher. But if you've trained longer, i doubt you'll get much new info from this book. And if you've trained less, IMO you need more detailed info. If you need to ask the details from your teacher, you'd be better off asking the drills from your teacher too.

Atleast one good option is "Attack proof" by Perkins / Ridenhour / Kovalsky. It's more a self-defence book, but had drills i found actually useful and new to me.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent for beginers, and for Fitness.......2005-12-20

This is a very good book. Don't look into it though if your a black belt or higher, won't offer too much. This book offers great basic intruction, although it does detail on form, I'd listen to my instructor over this book. It comes from a karate point of view, but the drill are good for all martial art forms. No, there's no great training secrets or anything like that in this book. Any book or person that claims to know a secret of training is lying anyway. These bread and butter (basic) moves and drills will help you become faster and stronger when practiced regualrly. I increased my kicked height and speed, as well as my punching power and speed by using this book.

There are so many ways to embarrass yourself in this world. It's easy enough in your own culture, where you know most of the rules, but when you visit a foreign country, social interactions are fraught with gaffe potential. You could shake hands when air kisses were expected, make eye contact in a culture that deems it aggressive and boorish, or bring a hostess a gift of funeral flowers. Even smiles can be misinterpreted; what may seem like a friendly, open gesture to you can signal anger, embarrassment, or disrespect in other cultures.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cultural Etiquette is a lifesaver for all travelers, especially those attempting business trips on foreign turf. Even before the Guide gets into the particulars of Israel, India, Singapore, and Japan, its "Overview of International Etiquette" offers enough pointers, reminders, and general cultural sagacity to make it worth the purchase, introducing conventions whose norms differ from culture to culture (thereby providing fertile fields for insults and misunderstandings) such as gestures, table manners, dress, gifts, punctuality, and interpersonal space. Geared toward the businessperson, Turkington's guide suggests you dress conservatively, behave with respect, and refrain from telling jokes in languages you barely know. It also points out that it's always worthwhile learning your host country's history, culture, and language before you get there, and recommends obtaining business cards printed in English on one side and the language of the country you're visiting on the reverse.

Most of the book is dedicated to specific cultural phenomena in 26 regions, covering Canada to Latin America, Belgium to Russia, and Taiwan to Saudi Arabia. In Portugal, for instance, dress is formal, small talk doesn't include politics or government, business cards are vital, chrysanthemums are associated with death, and dinner is generally eaten around 8 p.m., whereas in Hungary, punctuality is prized, halo can be used for both hello and goodbye, and you should never chew gum in public.

With her Complete Idiot's Guide to Cultural Etiquette, Turkington offers a major contribution to world peace and compatibility. 1 out of 5 stars For Idiots, Indeed.......2001-03-02

I'm a German living in the U.S., so naturally, I scanned through the section dealing with Germany. What I found was a list of factual errors and stupid stereotypes. I could not read a single sentence without either cringing or laughing hysterically. It's all so very wrong. I doubt if the author has ever been to Germany, or has ever talked to someone who has been to Germany.

As a positive aside, the title is very descriptive. Follow the book's advise, and people will take you for a complete idiot.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting information, some errors though.......2000-03-27

This is a really interesting book, as it contains cultural information for many places around the world, which you may even find useful for your contacts and trips. However: 1) It is addressed mainly to US citizens and their specific cultural background, and 2) Contains some errors (at least some I could notice about the Greek and the Japanese cultures). So, please enjoy the book, but do not take it as a textbook... Anyway, if I would ever wanted to conduct serious business with an Indonesian (and not a one-time contact), I would spend much more time on investigating cultural issues :)

              Book Description

Two distinguished social and political philosophers take opposing positions in this highly engaging work. Louis P. Pojman justifies the practice of execution by appealing to the principle of retribution while Jeffrey Reiman argues that although the death penalty is a just punishment for murder, we are not morally obliged to execute murderers.

5 out of 5 stars The best debate.......2000-06-19

Pojman & Reiman do an excellent job seting forth the best arguments for and against the death penalty. Since they both agree on the principle of desert (that justice consists ingiving peoole what thye deserve), they have a common starting assumption. Reiman differs only to he extent that he doesn't think we always must punish people to the extent they deserve and argues hat the death penalty debases us. Pojman makes a good case for the deterrent effect of the death penalty.Awell argued book.

              2 out of 5 stars Disappointing arguments.......1999-12-20

I'm dissapointed at the arguments brougt forward by the philosopher in favor for the death penalty, Pojman. Even if you ignore the content of his arguments, the logic on which the argument was built didn't hold much water. Even though I'm myself against the dead penalty, I have seen others make a better and more coherent case for it. Pojmans last argument, that people that are against the dead penalty and pro choice are somehow immoral, is gratuitous and has nothing to do with an argument for the dead penalty. I would have expected a more thourough and convincing case.

3 out of 5 stars the saddle club parties.......2005-11-22

Most of this book took place in a two-three hour time frame. The party the Saddle Club threw for their friend Emily got out of hand, when a friend of Stevie's brother showed up with beer. Alcohol (big surprise) only fueled the flames of discontent that had been simmering among the friends. Carole also falls further behind in school, due to her working with Samson for the upcoming show. And Stevie helps Callie's brother, who is running for student council president.

              5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2002-12-15

I think that this book was a lot more real than the others, and was interesting. I cant believe Carole gives away lisas secret! also, Stevie was really weird to get drunk, not like the responsible practical joker she is.Pine hollow series is great, and i cant wait till #18!

              4 out of 5 stars I Liked it.......2000-05-28

I really liked this book. It seemed so real. It seemed totally unlike Stevie to do that...but..oh well. She made a mistake. I think Ben is a jerk though. And I wish some other people would have gotten caught drinking. Otherwise, it was great. Oh ONE more thing...I apsolutley gag every time they talk about the two love birds: Lisa and Alex. Oh well. PRETTY GOOD BOOK!

              5 out of 5 stars A very exciting book!.......2000-05-11

This book is great! It starts off boring but as the party for Emily gets out going, the book really heats up! It was great! As AJ, Phils depressed friend finds beer the party takes a turn for the worst, I won't give much away, but the part about the school election isn't the best. But overall, this book will keep you reading so much, you will be done very fast! I would definatly recommend this book for anyone that loves all diferent elements in a book, comedy, drama and so much more!

2 out of 5 stars Not Very Well Written.......2000-03-05

I was really upset with how this book was written. The whole thing was based around one stupid party that in real life, probably lasted for all of two hours. I was disgusted with all the crazy stuff going on in everyone's lives. Lisa's 40 year old mother needs to get rid of her 24 year old boyfriend, and Lisa wouldn't be too bad off without her overprotective, posessive boyfriend, Alex. I mean, if Lisa even makes eye contact with some one who's cuter (and older) than Alex, he throws a fit and acts like a baby. I was also really mad at how everyone got so drunk. Most teenagers know when to say no, and I think that Bonnie Bryant was trying to use the fact that because two or three people were depressed, everyone got drunk. I really don't like how she writes teenagers off in this book as being depressed, terrible people.

5 out of 5 stars The Gretest Piece of Literature Ever Written.......2002-05-25

Despite not being a classic, there is no doubting that Death Penalty possesses an amazing script, characterization and outcome.
Quite simply, the novel is irresistable and deserves to be read again and again.

Hamley has somehow managed to create a plot which is completely choc-a-bloc full of action, suspense, significant clues and a character which can be related to in Stu.

There are no flaws in this novel.

The mass selection of characters would seem confusing, however Hamley has allowed the reader to relate to them and realise who they are, easily and rapidly. This is unlike the classic novels PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, HARRY POTTER and the over rated LORD OF THE RINGS.

The suspense builds up to the absolute extreme, through the frequent occurances of relevant and important incidents.

With it's status in the crime genre and it's basis of soccer, many readers will become involved in the novel, and not just crime or soccer fans, due to it's lyrical beauty.

The climax is so surprising, unexpected and dramatic, i will not even begin to mention the slightest detail about the ending.

This book is recommended for, quite simply, anyone over 12.

You will end up loving this novel, it's inevitable

And any directors or fim makers out there, this book is made for the movies, and will attract masses to the cinema.

Well done Dennis Hamley, every award in Literature should be awarded to you due to DEATH PENALTY!

              3 out of 5 stars Good, if you're a football fan.......2000-08-13

I didn't enjoy this as much as others in the Point crime series because, although the mystery was clever and intriguing, there was a lot of football information which made the book very boring in parts, especially near the beginning. If you like football, you would probably love this book, which is a mystery set around a football team, Radwick Rangers when someone is murdering the players. There are too many characters to keep track of at first until you sort them out into unimportant and important. Anyway, it was okay but I recommend something like 'Dying For You' more if you're not intrested in football.
