The size and weight of this book caused me to think twice because the combination of those features often suggest more than a fair amount of techno speak,often more satisfying for the writer than the reader. The weight of this book is pure muscle, written for the user...clear, understandable and comprehensive. If you are interested in global organizational performance, I found the treatment of the subject very useful and well done. As it turns out, the weight of the book has a complimentary benefit i.e. eliminating at least one trip to the gym, I can now build both strength and knowledge without having to take a gym shower. It may not be a benefit for everyone, but the Handbook for HTP will provide value for those who are serious about this subject....

We humans are most important. Not only to ourselves, but increasingly to economy. More and more humans become alive within the business they work in. And businesses become more and more knowledge critical, which enhances the importance of humans and their performance. This means that addressing issues on human performance becomes increasingly complex and daunting. Hence: Human Performance Technology. This handbook is both scientific and realistic. It takes the need for metrics as much into account as the 'softer' aspects. It approaches HP from a General Systems Theory approach and does is coherent. Everyone that wants to know where we stand, where we are going, will love it for its scientific and academic value alone. This book is a "must have" for all managers: young and old, mature and just beginning.

For new managers, the book contains essential guidelines for establishing a vision, communicating the mission, and securing buy-in of your team members. It will help the new manager communicate effectively and establish confidence with the team.

For the mature manager (read "aged" manager), this book augments your "home-grown" techniques with many new ideas. I found the book re-inforced my "home-grown" style and augmented it with new ideas.

This book describes the history and present knowledge of a paradigmatic system, the lac operon of E. coli. The first part of the book presents the history of the operon and various schools of thought regarding genetic control in general. The second part presents a number of false interpretations and misconceptions and demonstrates how easily a scientist may deceive himself. The third and last part thoroughly covers the current state of knowledge of the lac operon including the importance of the auxiliary operators and discussions of several X-ray structures, one of which was published shortly before this book went into press. A unique combination of personal anecdotes and present-day science makes this book appealing to students, postdocs, active and retired researchers alike.

A short review of a short history.......2000-12-15

This book is like Ptashne's "Genetic switch" but more personal and at a higher scientific/intellectual level (read "Genetic Switch" first if you have no idea what it is). "The lac Operon" is annotated with many short, colourful, 'behind-the-scenes' anecdotes about the people who were (are) doing the science. These anecdotes, and other historical facts, do an outstanding job of placing the research questions of the time (the answers to which are today taken as 'self-evident truths') in context.

The lac Operon, a Paradigm of Beauty and Efficiency.......1998-07-23

In "The lac Operon - A Short History of a Genetic Paradigm", Benno Mueller-Hill does an excellent job of describing the history, mistakes, and present-day view of the lac operon. I found it an enjoyable read. The book is written at a level that assumes the reader already knows a bit about molecular biology, and starts with "A Short History of the lac System from its Beginning to 1978". I found the middle section most interesting, where the mistaken interpretations of the lac operon are considered. This would be a very educational read for students (and post-docs and researchers) in the field. Finally, the last section discusses the current model for how the lac Operon works; this model has not made it to many of the undergraduate molecular biology / Genetics textbooks yet. Overall I was quite happy with this short book on the first bacterial operon to be characterised.

A lifetime of Punchers Players Punks and Prophets is undoubtedly a great collection of essays written by one of the most insightful and prophetic sports writers of our time. A collection of the best work from the late Ralph Wiley, this is not just a collection of his best work but also a look into the life and mind of one of the most influential African-American sports journalist. We see how Ralph Wiley responds to certain historical sports moments/ issues, such as minority owner ship, Mike Tyson and September 11.

Although this book is a collection of Wiley's greatest work it is much more than that. This book illustrates the unique writing style of Ralph Wiley. Wiley exemplifies a style that is brash and to the point yet not arrogant. He writes in a way that you respect his stand on issues even though you may not agree with it. One of Ralph Wiley's favorite sports to cover was boxing he was made famous by his articles in the Oakland Tribune about Roberto Duran's famous "No mas" and his depiction of fights like Leonard vs. Hearns II. Theses pieces are what sprang Wiley's name into the infamous Sports Illustrated which he was a writer for since the late 80's. After SI he continued to have success as a columnist for ESPN.com. The columns he wrote there were extremely personal. Columns such as WWJD (What Would Jackie Robinson Do), His response to the lack of African American ownership in the new millennium expressed his built up anger of major sports. Also his article Why We Need Sports Now sent a message to American people following the terrorist attack of 9/11.The book is excellent and a great book for any aspiring journalist.

The main character David Ponder travels through time to meet important figures that teach him life's lessons. The author, Andrews, chose promising leaders to illustrate his point. Both common people and famous leaders that demonstrate success through the decisions they chose to make.

I was disappointed with the narrative. It was redundant and lacked originality. I became annoyed with positive encouragement that was sappy and unrealistic. The brief moments of unique and inspirational comments were overshadowed by clichés and fluff.

The highly acclaimed review elevated my expectations and left me dissatisfied when I finished. The positive message is admirable and the core advice is insightful, but the execution and plot limited its potential.

A book that captures the essence of travel........2000-05-28

This book captures all the senses. The stories capture the reader in a way few books can. When you don't feel like you are the traveller in the story then you long to wish that you were. The stories are exciting, heart warming, funny, and amazing. This book opens the reader to the wonderful world of travel.

Made me ache to travel again........1999-10-19

So many of the stories in this book hit me in the heart, they made me want to get on a plane TOMORROW. Reminded me of the magic of travel, and why I want to be out there wandering the world again.

DON'T WASTE YOUR VALUABLE READING TIME--A SLEEPER.......1998-09-18

Read something better; read William Dalrymple's FROM THE HOLY MOUNTAIN, or the classic, THE BLUE NILE. These stories were amateur night at the bingo hall. There were a couple touching exceptions, one about a young woman, a cabbie, and the Taj Mahal in India--- but for the most part the stories in the book were dull, witless, and lacked excitement, adventure, and charm. They sounded like fantasies of Dilbert's travels, NO, not even that exciting. Some even sounded made-up, yes, contrived for the book. What scares me is that these were the collected "Best of" Travelers Tales....well, I might check out some of the others, but I don't think I'd buy them, just read them quick at the bookstore.

A very enjoyable read and a traveler's inspiration!.......1998-07-25

I so enjoyed reading this book that I just bought six more in the series! In the introduction the editors write that for some travel is "a salve for weary body and soul." This phrase could aptly be applied to the book as well. It soothed the worries of my day and refreshed my perspective on the good things in my life. The stories evoke a sense of adventure, the pleasure of an unexpected kindness, the opening of new worlds, and the discovery of one's self along the way. There are one or two stories that I almost skipped, since they represented a lifestyle that seemed awkward to me - but that is often what travel entails, and the discomfort offers sparks of excitement to the journey. Most of the tales carried me to distant lands and warmly reminded me of past trips or stirred me to consider future ones.

Great Collection Of Tales For Teens!.......2004-10-02

This is *not* an outdated collection, though published in 1999; many readers will actually delight in recalling "how we felt" as the old century/millenium ticked away. Written by an assortment of the finest writers for young adults today, no serious collection for teens should be without it. Just the stories by L'Engle and Peck make it worth the read.
