Book Description
The basic question of this book is what we can learn from empirical as well as theoretical analysis of financial systems, differing cross-sectional and changing structually over time, with respect to the issue of stability of financial systems. Part I of the book deals with stability issues in a globalizing financial world and addresses topics of convergence, domestic policy, financial bubbles, crises and international coordination. Part II is on banking systems. Country specific adoption and restructuring of (universal but also separation) banking systems are key problems for the industrialized economies, while catching-up is of major concern for the economies in transition. Feeble regional economies and subsidized banking is at the heart of the vivid dispute on public sector banking being taken up in Part III. The last Part is devoted to resource-oriented approaches in quantifiying financial development and risk of sovereign default.

Description:
This paper examines the relationship between banking market structure and financial stability. Using data on thrifts, a type of banking institution specializing in residential mortgage lending, I test two related hypotheses. First, competition reduces franchise value. Second, reduced franchise value induces risk taking. Testing the second hypothesis exploits predictions that when hit by an exogenous shock, the slope of risk with respect to franchise value becomes more negative because thrifts adopt ''bang-bang'' strategies and choose minimal or maximal risk. Using the Texas real estate collapse in the 1980s as a natural experiment, I find evidence supporting both hypotheses.

Description:
Drawing on a unique dataset of flow-of funds and balance sheet data, this paper analyzes the impact of financial crises on aggregate corporate financing and expenditure in a range of countries. Investment and inventory contractions are the main contributors to lower GDP growth after crises, with a much greater effect in emerging market countries. The debt-equity ratio is correlated with investment and inventory declines following crises. Econometric analysis suggests that financial crises have a greater impact on expenditure and the financing of corporate sectors in emerging markets than in industrial countries. Industrial countries appear to benefit from a pick-up in bond issuance in the wake of banking crises. Although companies in emerging market countries hold more precautionary liquidity, this is evidently not sufficient to prevent a greater amplitude of response of expenditure to shocks.

Book Description
The purpose of the books in the Foundations for Organizational Science series is to describe what is known in a subject area, what we need to know to substantially increase our knowledge and practice, and ideas about how to go about obtaining this knowledge. The books are also targeted to graduate students in the organizational sciences. Personnel Selection offers a comprehensive, state-of-the-art look at the field of personnel selection. This book also emphasizes the role of theory in the personnel selection research, an area of organizational science that is often characterized as lacking in theoretical bases. Traditional topics, such as job analysis, performance measurement, the measurement of individual difference characteristics, the design of validation research, and the evaluation of validation data, are covered. In addition, novel ideas concerning levels of analysis issues, examinee reactions to tests, the impact of changing technology and means of communication, and globalization are also discussed. Each chapter provides detailed access to current knowledge, identifies sources that can provide further detail, and ends with a summary of the major research questions that should be addressed to advance understanding of the issues described in that chapter.

Book Description
Arboriculture--the emphasis on keeping trees alive and healthy--has emerged only recently as a profession; however, the practices in use today are the culmination of decades of development. The first book of its kind, Aboriculture: History and Development in North America chronicles a century of this 'love of trees' view as it has developed into a viable profession. Beginning with a discussion of the origins of planting, transplanting, and pruning, Richard Campana provides a breadth and depth of understanding of how arboriculture has become an important force in modern ecology. Specific topics discussed include: the introduction of woody plants to North America; botanical gardens and arboreta; gypsy moths; Dutch elm disease; the Davey, Bartlett, and Asplundh tree experts; herbicides, insecticides and fungicides; pruning; fertilization; wound treatment; and cabling, bracing, and lightning protection. This unique history will be of interest to arborists, city foresters, landscape architects, nursery companies, contractors, park and city managers, superintendents of institutional grounds, educators, students, workers in land management, government and public utilities--and anyone involved in the preservation of trees.
Book Description
This book provides an introduction to geometric algebra as a unified language for physics and mathematics. It contains extensive applications to classical mechanics in a textbook format suitable for courses at an intermediate level. The text is supported by more than 200 diagrams to help develop geometrical and physical intuition. Besides covering the standard material for a course on the mechanics of particles and rigid bodies, the book introduces new, coordinate-free methods for rotational dynamics and orbital mechanics, developing these subjects to a level well beyond that of other textbooks. These methods have been widely applied in recent years to biomechanics and robotics, to computer vision and geometric design, to orbital mechanics in government and industrial space programs, as well as to other branches of physics. The book applies them to the major perturbations in the solar system, including the planetary perturbations of Mercury's perihelion.
Geometric algebra integrates conventional vector algebra (along with its established notations) into a system with all the advantages of quaternions and spinors. Thus, it increases the power of the mathematical language of classical mechanics while bringing it closer to the language of quantum mechanics. This book systematically develops purely mathematical applications of geometric algebra useful in physics, including extensive applications to linear algebra and transformation groups. It contains sufficient material for a course on mathematical topics alone.
The second edition has been expanded by nearly a hundred pages on relativistic mechanics. The treatment is unique in its exclusive use of geometric algebra and in its detailed treatment of spacetime maps, collisions, motion in uniform fields and relativistic precession. It conforms with Einstein's view that the Special Theory of Relativity is the culmination of developments in classical mechanics.

A problem with relativistic mechanics..........2005-12-01
David Hestenes is a forerunner of the modern development of Clifford algebra. His current research activities can be followed in the site http://modelingnts.la.asu.edu/GC_R&D.html. Probably his most important book until now (written with Garret Sobczyk) was "Clifford Algebra to Geometric Calculus: A Unified Language for Mathematics and Physics" (Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1984) also available at Amazon.com. This book on the new foundations for classical mechanics (second edition) was written as an introduction to geometric algebra. The term "geometric algebra" was coined to stress that this formulation of Clifford algebra is a unified language for physics and mathematics; it is not a matrix algebra (as used in quantum mechanics in the disguised forms of Pauli and Dirac matrices) as it uses a new property, the contraction, which makes it different from other associative algebras. A recent book on geometric algebra is "Geometric Algebra for Physicists" by Chris Doran and Anthony Lasenby (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2003) - see the site http://www.mrao.cam.ac.uk/~clifford/.
Geometric algebra is a graded algebra based on the geometric product of vectors which reduces to the inner product (a scalar) when the two vectors are parallel and to the outer product (a bivector) when the two vectors are orthogonal. The geometric product is associative and can be used in spaces with any dimension (as opposed to the cross product of vectors which is not associative and can only be used in three or seven dimensions). Therefore, the geometric product is able to generate several graded algebras: (i) in two dimensions we recover the complex numbers as elements of a real algebra, not as elements of a field; (ii) in three dimensions we get a geometric algebra that is far better than the Gibbsian approach mainly due to the geometric role of rotors is reflections and rotations; (iii) in four dimensions we obtain the so-called spacetime algebra which is perfect for Minkowski spacetime within the context of special relativity - see the paper from Hestenes in American Journal of Physics (vol. 71, pp. 691-714, June 2003). Hamilton's quaternions are properly understood. Even as a new gauge theory of gravity on flat spacetime Hestenes' geometric algebra plays a very important role - see the paper from Hestenes in Foundations of Physics (vol. 25, pp. 903-970, June 2005). The clear and insightful approach that geometric algebra can bring to the Dirac equation is also remarkable.
My only problem with this book is due to Chapter 9 on relativistic mechanics. In this chapter Hestenes takes the usual approach that can be found in traditional four-vectors, by representing an event as a paravector, i.e., as a sum of a scalar and a three-dimensional vector (in Euclidean space). This kind of approach doesn't take advantage of geometric algebra (as in his article on spacetime algebra for Am. J. Phys.) because spatial vectors are not directly linked to an observer (and to its proper time) as they are in spacetime algebra where the so-called space-time split clearly leads to an invariant and proper formulation of physics. In Chapter 9, indeed, these paravectors induce a relativistic approach and not a proper approach. Nevertheless, apart from this remark, my overall comment on this book is very positive.
Doesn't stand on its own.......2005-06-13
While I found this a reasonably well-written text, I judge a book based upon how well it stands on its own - that is, can I read the book, work through the exercises, and acquire a grasp of the topic. While this is a much clearer and more accessible intro to geometric algebra than Hestene's "Clifford Algebra to Geometric Calculus", it is more the type of book which would accompany a class in GA, where the instructor fills-in the gaps, rather than a stand-alone text. The worked exercises are relatively few, and are typically of the nature: start with this, magic, more magic, resulting answer. It lacks sufficient explanation, is not self-contained, but this can be partially overcome with additional resources.
Great for physicists, okay for others.......2000-09-12
This is a great introduction to the Geometric (Clifford) Algebra. It's fundamentally a physics textbook, however. Those readers whose only desire is to learn the Geometric Algebra might feel some frustration at having to separate out the Geometric Algebra from the physics. Readers that prefer learning by exploring applications and examples will like this book; those that prefer explanations in the abstract will still enjoy many sections, but will have to make it through the more applied sections to get the full story.
Reading the book and working through the problems gives a firm grounding in the use of the Geometric Algebra and teaches classical mechanics besides. I could easily recommend this book as a physics textbook on its merits in that area alone.
Excellent place to start learning Clifford Algebra........2000-08-06
A briliantly pedagogical introduction to Clifford Algebra as a unified algebraic language for Newtonian Mechanics in three dimensions. The book is full of applications and nonstandard approaches which simply cannot be found anywhere else. This is essential reading for anyone interested in Clifford Algebras or who wants a deeper appreciation for classical mechanics. This is a lot of book...
Math making sense.......2000-05-01
The entirely new approach to the mathematical treatment of familiar Physics situations. A very useful tool for a Physisist.

A very detailed look at a beautiful area of the world. The writing makes you feel like you have been there. Lots of research in this one. Relax and enjoy the get-away.
A wonderful portrait of a small ecological niche........1997-02-01
Discount this review as you will; I must confess that I've known Jack for a number of years...
Nonetheless, it's a beatutiful work.
While some reviewers have compared him to Thoreau, I wouldn't go that far. But his love for the small deails of an eccosystm comes through exquisitly.
As the title implies, Jack cronicles his frequent trips to
Soldiers's Delight, a sort-of protected park near his home.
It includes the geologic history of the area, as well as the history of human impact. And does a good job of riding the line between science and simple love for a place on the planet.
It's clear to the reader that Jack loves the place, and his detailed, but not judgemental, descriptions of everything from the beauty of salamanders to piles of junk put you there.
Maybe Jack isn't the next Thoreau. This book makes me think more of Hemmingway. A sort of restrained exuberance, and an economy of language that takes the reader into a place worth seeing.

Golf at the Top with Steve Williams, an excellent book...........2007-02-03
This book by New Zealand highest paid sportsperson is imformative technically as well as giving insight to the use of the top two inches of the human body with regard to all sprorts and life in general. A very recommended read for all, not just golf nutsd......
Well Done!.......2007-01-07
Book arrived in excellent condition in a timely fashion. Pleasure to do business with.
It Ain't About Cleaning Clubs.......2006-06-24
Let's see, you take one caddy from New Zealand who dropped out of high school, add an unknown business / political writer from New Zealand and you get one of the most powerful sports psychology books ever written. Yeah, that makes sense.
I don't know what I was expecting when I bought the book, but I certainly was not expecting to be writing a tribute.
I was stunned not only at the content but also the delivery. Although this book is written in a way to be assimilated by just about anyone, the value of the content in this book will be appreciated more by those who understand the importance and the difficulty of being able to construct the condition of lasing mental activities needed to ensure the success of each shot under tournament pressure.
I suppose that a downside might be that those who are not already familiar with the value of meditation (essentially those who would stand to benefit the most from this book) could easily overlook some of the most important, but subtle, threads in the focus of this work. So, for the highest level of reader satisfaction, I would strongly endorse: a love of golf, an appreciation for the benefits of meditation and a careful reading of this book...in that order.

Teen Fiction That Goes Deeper.......2003-11-17
Fiona O'Hara can't really complain about her life. She has it all. She goes to one of the poshest schools in Manhattan, owns tons of great clothes by all the big designers (i.e. Prada, Gucci), and can prance around New York City as if it were her very own playground. But when her parents finally get the long-awaited divorce, Fiona's world crumbles around her. Suddenly she's whisked off to New Jersey, a place where you actually need a car to get around, forced to go to Hamilton High School, where the kids are all in serious need of new clothes and hairstyles, and forced to be a cast member of the new reality TV show, being filmed at Hamilton High, called The Real Deal. Between living in her Grandmother's basement with her deranged Mother, and practically being ignored by her Father, and having been ditched by her big-city friends, Fiona is forced to find solace in three outcasts at Hamilton High, who will change her life forever.
Fiona is an amazingly witty, intelligent, spunky character, who will capture the hearts of teenage girls around the country. Her complaints are valid, yet hilarious at the same time. While it may seem as if the book focuses on fame, there are many issues that go deeper, such as Fiona's Mother's depression, how many things on reality TV is taken greatly out of context, and how a big move, and divorce really affects a teenage girl. This was a fantastic book, and I think that it has now become my very favorite novel in the Smooch YA series so far. A must read for all.

Has A Great Deal To Say..........2003-10-28
Fiona's life may not have been perfect, as she was caught in the middle of her parents' stormy marriage, but divorce did not improve it. Suddenly, she finds herself living in her maternal grandmother's basement with her overly sensitive, depressed mother, and attending a new school in her junior year. Not only is the school far below her former high school academically, but she has to leave her former friends and try to make new ones. To make matters triply worse, this is all on television. Her new school is the subject of the latest reality show. Fiona finds every action replayed on national t.v, and often in a less than true or flattering light. All the trials of high school; romantic rivalries, pettiness, attention seeking, etc. are held up for all to see.
The issues are not all that petty, either. Acceptance, alternate lifestyles, broken hearts, and what makes friendship real are tested and proven. In the end, Fiona will learn the real meanings to trust and justice, and to love.
*** Though Focus on This is extremely amusing, with laugh out loud moments, don't think that it lacks in seriousness. True humor is displayed by the most severe moments. Sometimes, you have to laugh through tears. While I would not recommend a book this mature for those without an equal maturity, for those who can handle the serious nature behind the laughter, it has a great deal to say. ***
