Authors have done something different with their involvment of the student with the text through the "feedback exercises". These are not only fun, but provide fine topics for class discussion. I found the text did not get into the nitty-gritty problems confronting small business managers or chain unit managers. A usable text book, but the instructor had better bring a wealth of practical experience to the party.

I recently got my first Red Rump parakeet. Ordered this book to get good basic information on care and such. Felt it was a good basis all around book for all Australian parakeets. Went into many types of the Australian keets.

The only reason I gave this book 3 stars is because I simply looked through it briefly. I ordered it for a friend of mine who has a Pale-headed Rosella. I assume she finds it helpful. Sorry I couldn't be more specific!

THE NEW AUSTRALIAN PARAKEET HANDBOOK by Matthew Vriends, is a relatively technical volume covering "everything about purchase, housing, care, nutrition, behavior, breeding and disease' and a special chapter on `understanding the Australian Parakeet'

Ever wonder where that blue or yellow budgie you own fits into the larger scheme of the Parakeet world? This book won't tell you. NAPH describes the whereabouts of selected parakeets native to Australia, not `Melopsittacus undulatus. You won't find `Budgies' in the index either, and the `Grass Parakeet is not the Budgie according to this book.

Vriends book covers the so-called `broad tailed parakeets' ornamental birds you might encounter on a field trip and want to breed yourself, could you catch a pair. Vriends Includes descriptions of Nymphicus hollandicus known to most of us as the`Cockatiel' and he also writes about lesser known species such as Rosellas, Ring-necks and Red-rumped Parakeets, as well as the Yellow-vented Blue Bonnet parakeet which must be a sight to see in the wild. Vriends book is really a breeding and "birding" book comparable to those published by the Smithsonian on captive breeding programs for `threatened' birds held in captivity and/or finding them in their threatened habitats, and would make a good companion on your next trip through Australia to search the bush and back roads. In fact, one great shot shows an old guy with camper in the background, feeding a wild flock of Australian King Parrots with bright red heads (could this be the author?). The book includes many photos with poor captions and plenty of black and white drawings which I find offputting when trying to determine which species might be lurking on the fence post yonder.

The New Australian Parakeet Handbook.......2002-08-07

This was one of the very few books that covered to any degree the rare species of bird that I recently purchased.

I have also seen this title in a highly respected local bird farm library.

Highly recommended for not extensive information on each breed, but short summaries on about every breed of Australian parakeet you need to know about.

Excellent resource book.......2001-04-30

Dr. Vriends is one of the formost authorities on birds, and this book is an excellent example of his knowledge in unusual species. It covers all Australian parakeets that are usually kept, and is currently the most comprehensive guide to these interesting beauties. Highly recommend this book for all who own or are considering owning Australian broad and long tailed parakeets.

When you need to know how to teach pitching..........2007-04-03

When my son turned 9, and was going into kid-pitch for the first time, he thought he wanted to be a pitcher. What did I know about pitching? Not much. Randy Voorhees...if you read this...thank you.

This book let me turn a scrawny kid into not just a pitcher, but a closer. The drills in the book are simple to follow, and backed by intelligent explanations of WHY they work. By breaking the pitching motion down into a series of simple, understandable steps, my son and I worked together to build a delivery that focused on accuracy and control, not brute power and speed.

By the middle of his second season in kid pitch, he knew if he got the nod in the 4th inning, that it was his job to hold the lead...and he never failed. By learning to have control and accuracy, my son never worried about his ability...he simply learned to focus on each pitch, one at a time. He learned that with only modest speed and good movement on his pitches, he could beat 85% of the hitters on strikes, 10% on contact ground balls and pop-ups, and 5% of the kids were going to make good contact NO MATTER WHAT...and that's what fielders are for.

If you're looking to fish in the Northeast...forget it. This book seems to focus in on two or three states for the most part. I was very disappointed with this directory. I expected more from Bass Pro Shop. Two thumbs down...save your time and money.

new twist on very old theme.......2004-12-14

Although at times, the story strained credibility, the first chapter was written so gorgeously and flawlessly, that I stuck with it to the end.

It strongly reminded me of "One On One" by Tabitha King, only that book I would describe as R-rated. Both were similar, however: delinquent, wild child girl with artistic aspirations meets nice sensible boy who's trying to find an escape hatch to progress beyond his humble origins. While I felt the author did a good job with Ben, at times I felt that she didn't have any more of a handle on Lara than the Lara character herself did. Though this may, of course, been intentional.

A few things bothered me: Was it really necessary to make such a point of saying that Ben had no tack? Nothing in the way she presented the riding school people led me to believe that they would care if he simply borrowed some (surely they need it for the riders without their own mounts?) Nitpicking? Perhaps.

Also I wish the writer had bothered to nail down what time period this story took place in. Going on the clothing and speaking style, I assumed it was in the present, and (guess I'm getting really nitpicky) I couldn't figure out why Lara wouldn't use the Internet to track down her birth mother.

Then and again, I think way too much about these things, and I liked the book.

Beautiful.......2004-08-05

This book, the first I have read by Deborah Savage is one of the most beautiful, touching stories I have ever read, and trust me, there have been ALOT of books I have read.
The characters, are lovely and rather enjoyable. Even Lara, who is extremely complicated in so many ways.
My favorite character was Ben, who I think is a lot like me (even though I HATE horses).
Unlike a lot of books these days, Savage ends this story in no way disturbing or questionable. When you finally put it down, you feel refreshed and like you actually KNEW the characters. I love this book. That's exactly why I gave it 5 stars.

Under A Different Sky.......2003-07-10

Is a great book. I felt connected to it oddly enough. Savage writes in with such good description and feeling yet it feels like your always missing one little detail. I felt as if I knew who Lara and Ben were and how they looked, even though the author gave vague descriptions. I have never read a book like this and I think it is truly wonderful

Hackneyed and lacking in credibility.......2001-01-29

My 13-year-old daughter and I often read books aloud. Both horse lovers, we started on this one with pretty high hopes, but disappointment set in before we finished chapter one. The author clearly knows little about real horses and riding. The whole idea that some lad could watch a couple of videos and from them learn competition-level dressage riding, even though he lacks a saddle and proper arena, is utter nonsense. His "being at one" with his stallion hints [badly] at the erotically horrific (but masterly) "Equus" (Peter Schafer)...or maybe it's just very purple prose. The whole idea that boy and horse think in unison seems pretty dodgy. At the end of chapter one, without mentioning my own reservations, I asked my daughter what she thought. "It's pretty over the top and not very realistic is it? Let's read something else." I guess that about sums it up. (We did try chapter 2, but won't go beyond it; the book doesn't get better. That said, some of the early dialogue is fairly well written...)

beautiful.......2000-05-09

I picked up this book on a spontaneous library visit, and I read it in one day. I was completely awed by the character of Lara McGrath... I saw myself in her and everything she did. Ben was noble to fall in love with someone like her, who is so hard to love. But "Under a Different Sky" gave me hope that people like Lara and I aren't in fact hateful creatures. We are people that can be loved.
