Great Ideas.......2007-03-17

This book presents the core concepts of the tractor method of raising chickens or other poultry. For Lee, chicken "tractors" are small moveable pens, used to confine chickens to a specific range. The pens are moved frequently, generally every day or every other day, so that the chickens always have fresh grass and bugs to peck at. The cages protect the birds from predators and provide shelter from the sun and rain. They also ensure that no plot of land receives too much manure or is grazed too heavily. (Lee points out that when chickens are raised in traditional chicken runs, their excrement can be so heavy that the nitrogen content can become so toxic that nothing will grow on the soil; as a result, the birds then don't have access to greens.) But the book isn't only about chickens--it presents an entire agricultural plan, in which the chickens are one part of the farm ecosystem, consuming greens, and providing fertilizer, which then becomes the input for organic garden plots. Lee also provides sample business plans for using poultry grown in tractors to provide a modest income that can cover meat costs for a family, pay property taxes, or even provide cash for general living expenses. The book includes a list of sources for further reading, a resource guide, and index.

Lee includes plans for several chicken tractors of varying capacity in the book. I haven't been able to try them myself yet, but several neighbors have adopted the chicken tractor method of poultry raising, and they all endorse it unreservedly. They say it is much more humane and healthier for the chickens than cage methods. It is safer for the birds and easier for their caregivers than free range methods. It also makes more sense for soil fertility and requires less work tossing around chicken manure than one finds with the traditional chicken pen. If and when I get chickens, this is clearly the way to go. At the end of the book, Lee mentions that the tractor method would also work for other birds, such as turkeys or quails, but unfortunately, he does not provide suggested dimensions of tractors for these birds.

When I bought the book I thought it was just going to be a funny cute book about cats. When I started to read it I learned so much that was helpful, and it made me laugh. I would read outloud so my husband would enjoy it at the same time. I think any body who has a cat needs to read this book.

I bought this book for my Dad who at 82 has hated cats his whole life. We found a stray 3 week old kitten by his back porch. It weight 1.1 and was very sick. I have 4 cats of my own and could't take it home with me so my Dad said he would care for him until I could take him. That day never came. My Dad named him Elmer and my sister and I are both jealous of all the attention our new "brother" gets. The book was well written and fun to read. My Dad enjoyed it and it gave him some insight to cats as he has never been around them.

Brilliant Book.......2007-09-27

The answer is actually found in page 208. The author doesn't tell you that it's all in your mind. Statistically, it only has a 50% chance of landing butter side down. But the problem is, you serve your toast butter side up on the plate. When it slips, it only has the distance to rotate half a turn before hitting the floor. How do you make the toast land butter side up. Robinson recommends that we wear stilts so that the toast can make a full rotation. I say we serve our toasts butter side down.

This is a funny book that explains to cynics and "naive scientists" why the checkout lines they are in are always the slowest, why the car breaks down when they're in a hurry ... What is the science behind Murphy's Law? Robinson explains it beautifully in this book. The first few chapters talk about perceptions and optical illusions and other ways by which the mind can play tricks with us. Our memories can also be selective. When something strikes us as coincidentally unpleasant, the naive scientist in us sees it as a phenomenon. Robinson argues that these phenomena are mostly psychological and only partly science. Which part?

In the final chapters, Robinson offers purely scientific explanations for Murphy's law in action. Nothing to do with perceptions and psychology. An interesting, entertaining, brain-teasing read.

A popular tour of cognitive psychology.......2007-05-11

Richard Robinson explains, how the Murphy's Laws naturally follow from the way our brain processes information. The focus of the book is not on Murphy's Laws as such; they merely provide a setting for a popular tour of cognitive psychology. The book is entertaining and reasonably educational. Its main drawback, in my view, is that it is a bit too popular. Robinson does a great job illustrating cognitive phenomena with simple and easy-to-understand examples, but he never spends much time on any single one. He also doesn't discuss, how exactly we know about the function of different parts of the brain - something that could have been done quite easily without complicating the book. Still, this was an interesting book to read, and I now understand why my computer always crashes just before I hit that "send" button :)

The Psychology of Murphy's Laws.......2006-02-04

Well-written and witty, this book makes it clear that all of Murphy's Laws exist mainly because of how the human brain works - psychology. With many entertaining and useful cartoons and prose that is both informative as well as peppered with the odd bit of well-placed humor, this book will entertain as much as inform. This is a quick read that all those who feel that they have been consistently plagued by Murphy's Laws cannot afford to miss.

For the general reader who needs a good overview of the Acadian people, this is the book. It is well written and coherent, despite the many twists and turns taken by Acadian history. Acadia was a prize contested by France and Britain in many wars, declared and undeclared, in the 17th and 18th Centuries.

The book is especially good at describing the British, Massachusetts and French internal political battles which ultimately led to the Acadian expulsion. These topics are often not very thoroughly covered in past histories of Acadia.

Pure poetry and not a word of rhyme. There are sentences in this collection of brief essays that will stop you in your tracks with their beauty and profundity. Mel's writing style is as natural as the natural world of which he writes so fondly. This book is divided into 12 chapters, each one titled for a month of the year. Travel with this great and wise man as he journeys from recollection to remembrance, often personal, always insightful. This is a treasure of a book, and, like love, meant to be shared. Master of adventure back in print!.......2007-06-11

Okay, the first thing I want to know is why a picture of an old time radio collection of detective shows is used to advertise this product? This is not an audio product. This is a book, one of Nostalgia Ventures series reprinting the legendary original Doc Savage novels of the 1930's.

A warning is in order for the first story in this collection, "The Land of Always-Night". This novel is not written by Dent, but by a close friend of his named Ryerson Johnson that Dent hired to ghostwrite some of the novels of the series. That said, "Land of Always-Night", involving Doc and his gang discovering a subterranean civilization whose existence spells trouble for the civilized surface world) is a pretty good one (Johnson's other Doc Savage novel, "The Fantastic Island", is absolutely awful). "Land" is also popular among Doc fans, although it does have its detractors (distinguished science fiction author and leading Doc scholar Philip Jose Farmer, in his "biography" of Savage, flatly declared "Land" to be non-canonical, although he curiously did accept the canonicity of an even more outlandish tale of an underground world, Laurence Donovan's "Murder Melody").
"Mad Mesa", the second novel in this collection, IS by Dent, and it is one of the finer examples of his work. The mystery which opens the novel is engaging (a penniless drifter suddenly seems to have inexplicably exchanged minds with an escaped convict), but the rationle behind it is ingenious. Dent later recycled the central gimmick of this novel for the farl less satisfying "According to Plan of a One-Eyed Mystic" several years later. The ultimate plan of the villians of this novel seems to owe a heavy debt to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Lost Special". As with all the other issues in this series, the original pulp format with illustrations has been faithfully reproduced.

Dressage In Harmony.......2007-03-09

I believe that Dressage In Harmony is a must have for anyone who is seriously interested in dressage. Mr. Zettl starts with a green horse beginning in dressage to the Grand Prix level in clear, understandable language plus good illustrations. I hope to have the good fortune to attend one of Walter Zettl's clinics now that I have "discovered" him.

Provides great detail, wonderful theory and terrific practical advice. There are some spots where the translation may not have been so good; but, overall this book is fabulous!

Disappointing..........2004-12-05

With all of the great reviews and the author's reputation, I was expecting a lot more. I just don't see anything new here, to me it reads like a dictionary on dressage. Fine, but not too interesting. I guess what really put me off straight away, was the the author's claim that horses are not very intelligent, and if they were we would be afraid to be near them at all. And "A horse will never do anything on purpose". I think that anyone who has spent a lot of time around horses would disagree with that statement. For example, if you have ever seen a horse work open a stall latch, I think you might agree that they are capable of doing things on purpose and with planning. From someone who supposedly stresses love for the horse during training, I found these statements quite inaccurate and somewhat cold. I've got loads of books on dressage, and this one would be at the bottom of my list.

I've been fortunate enough to attend private lessons given by this great teacher and can only say that this is the way I want to learn. He is gentle and encouraging, but firm -- and not a little demanding, requiring us to do our best, and to bring out the best in our horses -- but it is his love of horses that shines through. It matters not whether you are a beginner on a green horse or an advanced rider on a budding champion, he is the teacher you want. I saw stiff green horses relax and blow happily, and nervous riders smiling as they felt the changes in their horses and themselves. The German training system can seem daunting to us Americans used to hurrying along and getting results fast, but he makes us understand how to build trust, and build movement from that. It will take time, but with Zettl, you will succeed, and more importantly perhaps, you will enjoy the ride, and so will your horse.

Simply the best.......2004-05-23

Walter Zettl's classic Dressage in Harmony is simply the best book out there for most dressage riders, and their horses will agree. Not only does Herr Zettl cover just about every important detail for dressage training, but he also makes sure that the horse is the rider's primary concern, and he stresses that only correct, classical training is truly the most natural way to ride your horse.

The book covers everything from longeing and backing the young horse to performing Grand Prix movements on the seasoned schoolmaster, always emphasizing empathy toward the horse.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves horses, whatever discipline they choose to partake in. This book has relevance for all horsepeople.

Awesome beginning to an awesome variation on the OYW.......2003-09-29

For those who've seen the original Gundam 0079 TV series, the character personalities, mecha designs and plot synopses differ from it, even if it's just a little bit. Each issue of the manga probably translates into about 1 episode or so of the show, so expect to see about 40-50 issues at the rate Japan's Gundam Ace Magazine is covering it, along with Viz's great translation to English. Once you get the right-to-left reading down, you'll have no trouble understanding it. This issue especially differs from the first episode for a few key reasons, but I'll leave them up to you to notice so as not to spoil anything. I recommend this to anyone looking to get into Gundam manga, the UC timeline, or Gundam in general.

A hard story given a modern edge..........2002-10-15

Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's mecha and artistic skills work very, very well for this re-telling of the first Gundam story. The Origin is a version of the events that's been tweaked a bit, expanded in some really cool ways (we get to see a fight between a Gundam prototype piloted by an expert, among other things) and thoroughly modernized. The mecha and people still have that 70s Disco-Afro Glow, but the artistic style of the book is much more realistic, with a lot of moody shadows, more detail on the mecha and a weight of credibility slathered over all of the mechanical elements. If you've read the story before, then you won't find much that is new, but Yas' complex, rich illustrations and the modernized mecha designs are worth the cost of the book.
