    Book Description

This book illustrates the human resource function “as it happens” in classrooms, in schools, at board meetings—in short, in the educational arena. It gives readers a bona fide feel for what the human resource professional does. Reliable information is provided regarding the most current thinking in the field, covering eleven fundamental processes and allowing for understanding of human resources in education, its boundaries, and how it connects to other administrative functions. Issues that have been and continue to mainstays of the field are introduced and examined. Topics include: recruitment, selection, induction, development, performance appraisal, compensation, continuity, and unionism. An excellent resource for human resource professionals in the field of education and administration.

3 out of 5 stars Human Resource Function.......2005-06-01

The first couple of chapters have a lot of information which leaves the reader overwhelmed and not quite grasping the point of the book: (chapter 1) The Human Resource Function in Perspecitve and (chapter 2) Strategic Planning and the Human Resource Function. At times the authors do not completely explain what they are talking about or mention something and never explain it. However, the remainder of the chapters are broken down into components of what the functions of human resource encompass. The chapters don't completely match the authors' list on page 4, but most of them are covered: information technology; recruitment and selection; induction; development; performance appraisal; compensation; employment continuity; and unionism. I was very confused after reading the first couple of chapters, but as I finished the book, I was able to go back and reread the first two chapters which then made more sense.

        Book Description

Howard Kohn’s The Last Farmer is a memoir of his father’s last seasons working the Michigan farm where they both were raised. It is a place that Kohn, a former editor at Rolling Stone, has left many times but keeps coming back to.

Fredrick Kohn farmed the family homestead in the Saginaw Valley since his return from World War II. After forty years, with advancing age, failing health, bad weather, falling prices, pesky oil drillers, creeping suburban sprawl, and the exodus of his children, he starts to wonder if maybe the time has come to stop. The habits of a lifetime of hard work and economy are not easy to give up. Nor are the independence, the small gratifications, and the countless responsibilities that are the traditional farmer’s lot.

The Last Farmer is a rare story of a father’s determination and adaptation, a son’s realizations about his father, and a family’s love for the land that leads to understanding rather than tragedy.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful real life story that hits close to home!.......1999-07-05

This is a wonderful book that examines a father and son relationship in a Midwestern farming community. The struggles between generations and the authors own internal conflicts brought me to tears. The author captures the German-Lutheran morality and displays it affectionately. I loved this book because it showed the difficulty in following ones own dream, perhaps at the cost of someone elses dream. How to be true to oneself and find respect for making lifes difficult decisions.

My father gave me this book to read several years ago and it sat in my desk unread. Two years ago, my father passed away, and I just now read the book. How I wish I had read it when he was alive. My thanks to Howard Kohn for writing such a wonderful book, one I wish I had written.

This book collects the contributions presented at the conference Isolated Neutron Stars: From the Surface to the Interior, held in London in April 2006. Forty years after the discovery of radio pulsars it presents an up-to-date description of the new vision of isolated neutron stars that has emerged in recent years with the advance of multi-wavelength observations. The great variety of isolated neutron stars, from pulsars to magnetars, some of them discovered very recently and many of them not detectable in radio wavelengths, is amply covered by descriptions of recent observational results and presentations of the latest theoretical interpretation of these data.

              Book Description

Neutron stars are the densest observable bodies in our universe. Born during the gravitational collapse of luminous stars - a birth heralded by spectacular supernova explosions - they open a window on a world where the state of the matter and the strengths of the fields are anything but ordinary. This book is a collection of pedagogical lectures on the theory of neutron stars, and especially their interiors, at the forefront of current research. It addresses graduate students and researchers alike, and should be particularly suitable as a text bridging the gap between standard textbook material and the research literature.

John Pezzenti is an advocate of a photographic technique he calls "roaming nature," which involves studying the rhythms of a particular piece of ground, the ways of its trees and animals, and only then taking pictures. His 25 years of roaming the wilds of Alaska yielded this exquisite book of nature and landscape photographs, with one beautiful image leading to another. Among the highlights, of use to students of ecology and photography, are images of nature in action: caribou migrating across ice fields, an otter plucking a king crab from the sea, two bald eagles fighting over territory.

                Book Description

Alaska is a photographic portrait of one man's journey into the heart of America's last wilderness. John Pezzenti has a wilderness soul and an artist's temperament. He obsessively seeks out the remotest corners, the most beautiful natural places, and wildlife in its purest state--and then positions himself and waits patiently for the perfect image. He records the flora and fauna and the brilliance of the Alaskan landscape with the highest craftsmanship and artistic purpose to be found in nature photography today. He has accepted the solitude of his pursuit, has withstood injury, and has risked danger to obtain his photographs. He is driven by the fear that civilization and technology will inevitably intrude upon the pristine wilderness and forever alter its compelling beauty. Here, then, is one man's photographic odyssey through the Alaskan wilderness, from the Aleutian Islands, Kodiak, Katmai, and the Kenai Peninsula to the fjords and waterways and the Tongass Forest of the southeast, the Wrangell Mountains, and on to Denali, the Alaskan Yukon, and the Arctic Circle. Along the way he records encounters with brown bears and grizzly bears, golden eagles and bald eagles, sea lions and sea otters, majestic moose, Dahl sheep, and one very disoriented lynx. In his text he also describes some encounters with a few creatures of the human variety. Pezzenti's Alaska is an unforgettable experience.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book and Great Photography.......2000-01-11

Great Book! I would recommend to anybody interested in the beauty of our 49th state. This book captures the wild beauty and grandeur of the last frontier. Buy this book, if you can!

5 out of 5 stars Truly a journey that touches the heart, mind and spirit........1999-07-30

Once you have met John Pezzenti, you will understand that this artist and his incredible photographs are one entity. John's "ALASKA..." will take you on an incredible journey through the heart of the Alaskan wilderness, into the soul of an unforgettable man.

Five years ago, I walked into a conference room at the World Trade Center in Manhattan. A man stood beside a display of exquisitely breathtaking photographs, protecting them like an anxious parent; listening to every word, every comment, as if there might be some question about the magnificence of his work. That enigma was John Pezzenti, Jr. Those privileged to know him, have experienced the complexities of the man: Passionate, sensitive, wild as Alaska, free as the wind and sometimes, as immovable as the mountains. His life and his photographs have made an indelible impression.

Language seems a truly inadequate means of conveying the experience of John's "ALASKA" book. The photographs seem to have a life of their own. Speaking directly to the heart and soul, they give a glimpse into the spirit of the man who created them. This is a soul that seems to dance somewhere between heaven and earth. A soul that has borne burdens that few of us could shoulder, but one that has known transcendent heights that few will ever reach.

With each page, John's photographs and stories allow us to share his incredible gift, and to see places on this earth that seem closer to heaven. John's spirit is as wild and free as the Alaskan wilderness. Nature seems to recognize a kindred spirit. You will feel certain that he has been granted special permission to view the sacred, and that at times, nature must say "wait, keep that until John gets here." But such honors are not bestowed without tremendous tests of courage and endurance, endless patience, and unquestioning faith. No work of this magnitude is brought to fruition without great sacrifices, and John has made more than his share.

John has the unique talent of capturing the essence of the moment - then combining it with a fragment of his own soul - the result is this spectacular gift he has given to the world. No one can experience "ALASKA: A Photographic Journey..." and not be deeply moved. The superb imagery and heart warming words speak to everyone in a unique way. It will draw you in, touching your heart and soul each time you open its pages to relive the journey. Again and again it will surprise you, revealing something new with each reading.

Thank you, John for sharing your vision. Your book is dearly treasured, and keeps Alaska close to my heart until I return. God Bless, John. We await your next creation.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the ordinary.......1999-07-26

I've just granted my eyes and heart a second opportunity to experience Alaska through the verse and images of John Pezzenti Jr. The verse conveys both the spiritual and emotional connection the author obviously has with Alaska. The images transport this viewer to a place and time that feature nature displaying a magnificence worthy of savoring. Alaska, the book, inspires me to contemplate another adventure here in the northern Eden we call Alaska. A place where I am invited to quest for the spirit of the natural world that John Pezzenti knows so well. Alaska, the book and Alaska, the place transend the ordinary with grandure and excitement. I recommend both to anyone who lusts for beyond the ordinary. John Toppenberg

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring, captivating, and a precious find........1999-07-19

After 40 some years of living Alaska, I am well aware of the difficulty and seeming impossibility of capturing the great land on film and with words. The true essense and spitituality of this vast offering often eludes our cameras and pens. John has nailed it. His enduring patience and impecable eye for the finest of nature glows from image to image, mushroom ice stands, an otter enjoying a meal, volcanic clouds balloning over stands of towering spruce, an eaglets first moment broken from the shell, in your face bears, all these images and much more inspire me to look harder, go further, and wait longer for more of Alaska than I have ever experienced. The photos are sparkled by John's unique style of writing. After recieving the book as a gift I spent long nights, reading and re-reading his tales of adventure with delight. My work takes me far from home and John's book gives me opportunity to share the true flavors of Alaska with those I meet on the trail. Thank you John for sharing your God given talents, I so look forward to the next book.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Star Photos, 5 Star Writing. Pezzenti is Alaska's Best!.......1999-06-08

There are a great many picture books on Alaska, some which contain exceptional photgraphic elements. There are a great many journalistic books on Alaska, some which are so well written the reader is taken with and to The Great Land. John Pezzenti's book epitomizes the best of both.

Like Alaska, this book is greater than it's physical boundaries. It evokes the senses and the emotions. This is one photo book that is a must read!

                Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Go Smarty Go!.......2006-11-27

The book was put together quickly after Smarty Jones captured the 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes & looked in the latter as if he was going to be a cinch to win the Belmont Stakes and capture the Triple Crown. I consider it more like an event program than a book. The photographs - like most pro game programs - are excellent, but the text is simply a collection of wire stories that could have been read in any number of newspapers.

To put the popularity and interest in perspective, one of the cable TV home-shopping channels was prepared to sell a range of Smarty gear literally minutes after the Belmont Stakes, provided - of course - that he win the last jewel in the Triple Crown. In a race where the tactics of several jockeys were questionable - seemingly riding not to win, but to make victory for Smarty Jones very tough - the champion fell short, placing second after a deep stretch duel.

But due to the way the book was published - and without it being updated - it is not a definitive account of Smarty's racing career and does not cover his retirement, the 2005 "controversy" created by trainer John Servis when he jokingly hinted that Smarty Jones was going to be put back into training or the splash his young progeny have made at the major 2006 Thoroughbred sales.

The racing career of Smarty Jones meant so much to the Thoroughbred industry in Pennsylvania. The long-delayed legislation permitting racinos (race tracks with casino-styled gambling) and casinos was passed during the height of "Smarty-mania" which will make the state a desirable location to race, gamble and build Thoroughbred farms on existing agricultural-zoned land.

As an unproven sire, the offspring of Smarty Jones have proven very popular with those at the high-end of purchasing racers to aim at the major events at tracks worldwide. The final chapter has yet to be penned on a champion whose racing career streaked before the eyes of the public, but will continue to drive the industry for years to come.

I read this book and Smarty Jones: Forever a Champion, by Billy Valentine in the bookstore.

Smarty Jones's: America's Horse is just many color photos with accompaning newpaper articles. If you followed Smarty Jones career through the news on the internet or by newspaper, you will not learn anything new or personal about his life.

Smarty Jones: Forever a Champion, by Billy Valentine is a much better, although with less photos. You will learn the intimate details about Smarty Jones's life and anyone who is associated with him. You really get a feel for Smarty's personality, and people's inital reaction when they first saw him ("a runt") and when they first saw him run, how Servis changed his training tactics, etc. Definitely the book to get if you're a fan.

I really loved the photos of Smarty and the other horses in this book. It gives me a great chance to draw them on my sketchbook, but i'm also a horselover. We had some race horses from Kansas City, Proud Citizen and Perfect Drift, nothing compared to Smarty. I would recommend this book to someone.

After the exhiliarating trip Smarty took us all on in his quest for the Triple Crown, I was overjoyed to find this great collection of photos and writings on the whole experience. The pictures of the Derby are unbelievable! Alot of interesting and detailed background information, too. As a native Philadelphian and visitor to Philly Park, I am more than proud of our great champion.

I was a little disappointed in this book, I thought I was ordering a book that told the story of "SMARTY" from birth to the present, instead I got a "GREAT" photo book of the "PEOPLE'S HORSE". If you are a horse lover of any way, shape or form you will like this book, and like a previous reviewer said, there are a lot repetions, but each picture will take you back to the races in 2004, even if you did not record it on VHS.

                Book Description

Fan mail isn't unusual - even when the celebrity in question has four hooves. The great Kelso had a fan club, John Henry still has a loyal following, and surely Secretariat received a letter or two in his time. But when Smarty Jones took the world by storm in 2004, his mailbox overflowed. The underdog horse that nearly won the Triple Crown received more than a million letters in three months. That's five thousand letters every day, many addressed simply to "Smarty Jones, Philadelphia Park." Dozens of these letters from horse lovers, grade-schoolers, animals, and racing fans were selected for Dear Smarty. They're filled with the encouragement we'd all like to hear: "You tried your hardest and you'll always be a champion to me!" This book is a touching, must-have collectible from the Smarty Jones' racing era.

5 out of 5 stars Team Smarty Jones Fan's.......2005-05-24

I acquired this wonderful outstanding collection written by Bill Valentine at Oaklawn park in Hot Springs, Arkansas during a book sighning. Mr. Valentine and myself shared different stories with each other regarding the overwhelming love and affection America shares with this little chest nut horse. Smarty Jones will also be forever America's favorite son.

This book compiled of several fan mail's from kids, adults, and even other animals were sent to Smarty throughout his career. Many were sent to Smarty Jones, PA and amazingly enough they reached him without any other details of a correct address. That goes to show you how popular this little chest nut was and still is. Even after his retirement to stud he is still getting fan mail by the bags daily.

Each letter in this book is so compelling. Some are written in crayon by the most sincere children who spilled their heart to this beloved horse. I laughed till I cried with some of the letters. Many were written by children who are handicap and see Smarty as their hero and inspiration to overcome any obtacles that stand in their own way to success. This is truly an amazing book to read and feel coming from the hearts of those who love this horse. Team Smarty will be forever in the hearts of America forever. I promise if you say, "Smarty Jones", most everyone will say, "That was one heck of a spunky horse."

                    Book Description

The Sparks family salty old Peg Sparks, his wife Arn, and their sixteenyearold son Sparkie lived in the Plum Grove Hills in a oneroom cabin. They don't have a lot, but they would not turn a stray hounddog away from their doorand certainly not a stray boy like pale, spindly Didway Hargis, who has run away from his wealthy home in town.

The boy from Greenwood, Did Hargis, and the boy from the Plum Grove Hills, Sparkie, become good friends. Did learns to love the life of the hill people as he becomes one of the Sparks family. He and Sparkie sleep in the hayloft, each with a hound-dog for warmth. At night they hunt foxes and possums, and Did learns the difference between the long, slow "trail bark" of the hounds, and the rapid, excited bark that means that the hound has treed a possum. By day the boys work the farm. Did becomes accustomed to the world of Plum Grove, and he comes to love the Sparks family and their neighbors, who are generous and kind. He grows strong, tanned, and happy.

But Did and Sparkie's Appalachian Idyll is interrupted by a feud between the hill folk and a group of townsfolk, led by Did Hargis' father, who comes to take Did home. A gala midnight cornshucking turns into a pitched battle in the Plum Grove hills. The result is fastmoving and exciting reading.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for children and adults.......2006-03-11

Jesse Stuart was a great author who lived an amazing life. His family was very poor, and though they loved the land they could never hold on to one piece of it. His parents had no book learning. Mr. Stuart went to incredible lengths to get a very extensive education but never lost his love of the beautiful farmland and wildland of the mountains. Once he had money, he set out to buy every piece of land his father had farmed. He stayed friends with the simple folks he knew when young. This book tells they story of both sides of the world he grew up in, the town, with its school and fancy people, and the hills with the plain folks he loved so much. In later life he travelled around the world telling others about the beautiful country and genuine people he grew up with and trying to fight poverty and ignorance. I am so glad "Hie to the Hunters" is still in print so young people will remember this amazing man and his world.

This is one of the most heart warming stories I have ever read. I am 64 years old and read this book when I was about 12 years old and it has stuck with me for many years. I am buying one for my Grand Children to read and hope they find the love, trust and beauty that I found in these pages.

I've read this book many times and it still brings Laughter and tears into my life. The witty "Sparkie" charactor is a Southern down to earth no nonsense fellow with a heart as big as Texas.Put yourself into this book once and take it for a spin.

5 out of 5 stars Every Man's Boy Ought To Read This Book!.......2002-01-23

I first read Hie to the Hunters as a young boy. I still read it every other year or so. This is a young person's book with many adult lessons. Sparkie is a 16 year-old, tobacco chewin', fox huntin', overgrown teenager from the hills of Kentucky. He rescues Did Hargis from two bullies who are using him for a punching bag, and takes him home to the hills. Did is a soft city-slicker kid who is the resident poster boy of the local school. When Did first meets Sparkie's father "Peg" and mother "Arn" he is amused at their homey mannerisms and country ways. But Did soon learns that all knowledge is not found in books. He learns from his new family more than he had ever learned from his own father who operates the local hardware store. He even learns to sleep in the barn's hay loft with a hound dog or two for a blanket. Sparkie and Did coon hunt, fox hunt, and run a trap-line together. At first Did is all thumbs, but he soon learns the tricks of being a mountain-man and fits right in.

Meanwhile, a feud is brewing between the fox-hunters and the tobacco-growers. The tobacco-growers blame the fox-hunters for letting their hounds run through their tobacco and so they set out poison in the tobacco fields. In retaliation, tobacco barns start going up in flames one by one. Also, Did's dad isn't too happy about his leaving home to live among these "backward hillbillies" and gets the sheriff and town locals after Sparkie's folks. Did wants to stay, and the result is a cornfield fight between the mountain people and the city people. The mountain folk are at the annual corn-shuckin' when trouble breaks out. Did has just found a red ear (and thereby earned a kiss from his girl) when his dad and half the town come over the hill. Corn-stalks, fists, and insults are flying all around that night, but the issue still isn't settled.

There's much more to read about in this warm, moving, fictional account of two boys from different worlds learning how to be men together. The language in the book reminds one of the movie Sergeant York. If this all sounds interesting, believe me, this book is fun, action-packed, and moving. I recommend it to anyone who longs for simpler days and true family values. Hie to the Hunters is a classic.
