Neem: Today and in the New Millennium
ASIN: 0309046866 |
Book Description
The National Research Council is made up of members of the National Academy of Sciences. They undertook to study the incredible potential of the neem tree. This book is the report of their findings. Spanning a wide range of practical applications, neem was found to be extremely valuable as an insecticidal agent, a medicinal product and as an industrial component. The studies that are discussed in the book show that neem is one of the most valuable natural resources to solve a wide variety of global issues and concerns. The book contains extensive information including citations, safety tests and resources for follow up.
Book Description
Neem is a fascinating tree. On the one hand, it seems to be one of the most promising of all plants and may eventually benefit every person on the planet. Probably no other yields as many strange and varied products or has as many exploitable by-products. Indeed, as foreseen by some scientists, this plant may usher in a new era in pest control, provide millions with inexpensive medicines, cut down the rate of human population growth, and perhaps even reduce erosion, deforestation, and the excessive temperature of an overheated globe.
On the other hand, that all remains only a vague promise. Although the enthusiasm may be justified, it is largely founded on empirical or anecdotal evidence. Our purpose here is to marshal the various facts about this little-known species, to help illuminate its future promise, and to speed realization of its potential.
This report has been produced by the National Research Council particularly for nonspecialists such as government ministers, research directors, university students, private voluntary organizations, and entrepreneurs. It is intended as an economic development document, not a scientific monograph.

Book Description
The Nebraska Sandhills is the largest area of sand dunes in the western hemisphere, covering an area about as large as Vermont, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island combined. Unlike most dunes, the Sandhills region supports an astonishing variety of wildlife.
Sixty million years ago the area lay submerged in a vast inland sea. As the land lifted and the waters receded, the sandhills were formed, built upon a sandy floor above a sandy basement. Paul A. Johnsgard’s appreciation for the region includes its evolution, a process that continues today making a very special place, patiently shaped by water, wind, and time.
Sometimes 450 feet higher than their sloping valleys, the hills themselves are almost entirely covered with plants that manage to survive on an unstable substrate and in a climate of merciless heat and cold. They provide homes and resting places for rare species and sustain the livelihoods of a remarkable variety of people.
Though firmly established in science, this book is an extended love letter to the Sandhills region and its people, plants, and animals. Johnsgard is now in his third decade of research in the Sandhills. This Fragile Land lets others see what he sees, a land with a fascinating range of geological, biological, and ecological vistas.
Book Description
Athletic Development offers a rare opportunity to learn and apply a career full of knowledge from the best. World-renowned strength and conditioning coach Vern Gambetta condenses the wisdom he's gained through more than 40 years of experience of working with athletes across sports, age groups, and levels of competition, including members of the Chicago White Sox, New York Mets, and U.S. men's 1998 World Cup soccer team.
The result is an information-packed, myth-busting explanation of the most effective methods and prescriptions in each facet of an athlete's physical preparation. Gambetta includes never-before-published and ready-to-use training approaches in
- sport-specific demands analysis,
- work capacity enhancements,
- movement skills development,
- long- and short-term training program progressions, and
- rest and regeneration techniques.
Athletic Development explains what works, what doesn't, and why. Gambetta's no-nonsense approach emphasizes results that pay off in the competitive season and reflect his work at the highest echelons of sport. Merging principles of anatomy, biomechanics, and exercise physiology with sports conditioning applications and four decades of professional practice, this is the definitive guide to performance-enhancing training.
Customer Reviews:
Great!.......2007-07-18
Vern has been around the block and he knows his stuff. Read every word of his book and let it sink in.
A Great CSCS Reference.......2007-04-09
Athletes, trainers, and anyone studying sports medicine should check out this guide to sports conditioning. It's a great help to prepare for the CSCS exam.
Great book!.......2007-02-12
Anyone into the strength and conditioning of athletes will find this book very beneficial. The book contains various components of a program such as a balance progression, power endurance mini-programs, etc. I have gotten lots of use out of this book already due to all of the ideas in it. Great reference book for the CSCS's out there!
Book Description
Top athletes have long utilized functional training to zero in on the muscle groups they need for peak performance during competition. This book teaches all athletes — from weekend enthusiasts to pro players — the functional training exercises that will produce the best results in their sport by mimicking the actual movements they utilized in that sport. With these unique programs, athletes can simultaneously improve posture, balance, stability, and mobility. Each exercise progresses from simple to complex, low-to high-intensity, and addresses all aspects of athletic movement. The movements target specific muscle groups, while working related muscle groups and toning vital stabilizer muscles.Throughout the book, helpful icons show readers when an exercise applies to their sport and when it is useful for specific movements like sprinting, throwing, jumping, or changing direction. From there, the sport-specific workouts go beyond merely getting in shape to prepare the reader for shaking off a defender, spiking the ball over the net, or beating the throw to home plate.
Customer Reviews:
Good exercises but I expected a more substantial book.......2007-05-20
I will say that the book set out what the author intended. The exercises seem challenging and accomplish the goal of a tough workout without any fancy equipment, etc. However I have to agree about complaints on price. For a relatively thin book, without any accompanying media (for example a DVD showing the author doing the exercises/routines), without color photos and glossy paper the price was a little high (although cheaper than a gym membership, etc.) I agree with the reviewer who suggested Mr. Furey put out a more polished edition and I'd add include a DVD so we can see someone working the entire exercise not just pictures of several points in the exercise.
Don't just buy it. Use it!.......2005-12-31
Other reviewers have already said it all, but I'll add my two cents' worth anyhow. As a book, Combat Conditioning is far less than impressive. At first glance, you'll probably feel you wasted your money on it. But if you make it past that first impression and actually do the exercises--even just the three basic exercises that make up the "Royal Court"--you'll find that the contents of this book are pure gold.
I'm 50 years old and have been using Combat Conditioning as my sole workout regimen for the past three or four years; and I'm easily in much better shape now than I've ever been. I don't do as many reps as Furey suggests for the young, athletic, or experienced, but I do the exercises daily. They've benefited me far more than any other exercise program I've ever tried.
Do yourself a favor and buy the Combat Conditioning videos or DVDs too. Watching Matt Furey do the exercises helps ensure that you'll be doing them right.
More than just a book, Combat Conditioning is a lifetime fitness program--the best I've ever seen.
matt furey, combat conditioning, keeping it real.......2005-09-23
i am a long time furey faithful. his exercise programs both mental and physical have helped me become more of the person i want to be and i know that in the future they will help me even more. i see a lot of talk about price in these reviews. i dont care how much furey charges, if his price is too high for you, you are missing the boat. combat conditioning is the simplest set of end all be all core exercises for complete health and fitness no matter your age, occupation, hobby or gender. his focus is getting you into great shape, cardiovascularly, muscularly and flexibly all in a one shot deal. even better than combat conditioning the book, is combat conditioning the video/dvd where you see the man at work. visit [...] for a ton of eye opening knowledge, and if your concerned about price, dont bother. just think of what you spend on fuel or junk food or any other such nonsense and your senses will come back to you if you are at all interested in your own health, strength and longevity.
Quit Your Gym Membership.......2005-08-29
In this day and age of modern gyms, overpaid personal trainers and expensive workout outfits, etc., Combat Conditioning is just what I was looking for! I got it two years ago and have established a fitness level that a gym membership couldn't do.
I'm a martial artist and the exercises in Combat Conditioning have given me great functional strength, explosive power, three times the flexibility and 4 times the stamina. The Hindu Squats were the saving-grace for my knees. I had a MCL tear a few years back and have always had to deal with pain, stiffness and instability. After getting Combat Conditioning and doing the Hindu Squats, my knees are stronger with more stability and the nagging pain has significantly decreased!
I have read some of these reviews on Combat Conditioning and there seems to be a gripe and whine about the price. But in comparison to an $800 per year gym membership, not to mention the gas to get to and from there ( I live in California), Combat Conditioning is cheap!!! It is well worth the price, in fact, it is under priced if you ask me. I'm paid something like $45 directly from Matt Furey's website and then later got the videos for $99. In total, $144 plus shipping and handling for a lifetime of fitness!! Are you kidding me? I felt like I ripped off Matt Furey!
Great, good and bad:.......2005-04-09
I ordered the book from Matt Furey and believed I was getting a book. I was totally surprised that it was a workbook/paperbook of 144 pages. Exercises are in the first 139 pages. The rest is advertisement. I feel ambivalent because on the one hand the book is somewhat overpriced, but on the other hand I like the book's content. It has a lot of "meat". The pictures explaining the exercises are good. It definitely is a book worth having, even if you wince at the price -- if it gets you enthused about getting in shape. Matt Furey's program can literally change your life. I certainly am enthused about this exercise program and I have to thank Matt Furey for that. Hindu squats, pushups, bridges, bear crawls, situps, pullups and jump rope are now a daily part of my life. Combat Conditioning is a paperback I am glad I have, even if I believe it is pricey, but I am not buying any more of his expensive books and services. Combat Conditioning is complete in itself, and whoever masters those exercises is really in great shape.

Customer Reviews:
Functional training.......2007-08-31
Is ideal for personal trainers, athletes or anyone who wants to improve sports skills and knowledge, its a great complement for diferents sports
Changed my approach to working out.......2007-08-27
I don't remember if this was the first book I read on 'functional training' but it is the one I kept and remember best. It is interesting that Mike Boyle wrote in a T-Mag article that he wished the title didn't include "Functional Training" since that term has become associated with all sorts of wierd balance drills and exercises on swiss balls.
The big idea is that general fitness counts. The ability to perform movements that are common to lots of sports and actitivies will improve your performance as an athlete.
The reality of things is that even star athletes do not have perfect bodies. Their left and right sides don't match, don't have equal strength.. they can pull better than push, they can't explode from a squatted position, etc.
This is a good book - nearly a great book. Not the easiest read I think think coaches, athletes, and serious fitness folks will get the most out of it. "Bigger, Faster, Stronger" may be better for high school atletes, and "Core Performance Essentials" better for the recreational athlete. But no matter how you look at it, this is a worthwhile book to have.
"Functional Training for Sports" by Michael Boyle is the place to start for anyone wanting to revamp their fitness regimen........2007-01-29
This is the guy to read when you are ready to give up the bodybuilder- based mythology most of us have built our conditioning programs on since the 60's.
Boyle's site is the #1 source to research topics like functional movement, core training, plyometrics and the like. I bought his book after reading every page on the site and in my opinion it represents the cutting edge of athletic performance programs.
Check out sites for Boyle, Verstegen and Gray Cook if you're interested in changing your program to one that will last your lifetime and give you a more stable, functional body. If I'd been reading these guys when I was an active athlete instead of the memoirs of various "physical culturists," I'd have saved myself a lifetime of back pain and been a much better athlete into the bargain.
Still, there's no short cuts, and I guess you have to make the mistakes you're going to make along the way so you'll appreciate the truth when you finally stumble onto it. If you'd like to save yourself a few of those mistakes, though, and you're flailing around the gym listening to bad advice, take it upon yourself to do a little research with Boyle and his peers. You'll save yourself years of wasted effort, and develop a much more useful body in the bargain.
Up-to-Date Training.......2005-11-13
Training has changed over the decades as the science of the body progresses. Each successive emphasis in training has been an improvement over earlier ones, with athletes today in all team and Olympic sports simply better than their predecessors. If you want a sound and up-to-date way to improve your training, Michael Boyle's "Functional Training for Sports" is an indispensible book, whether you are a coach, athlete, parent or "do-it-yourself" amateur. As a professor in a program that deals with dancers and a coach who deals with winter athletes, I recommend Boyle's work if you want to be fit, quick, strong, agile and healthy. This is the latest wisdom on training now available to anyone who can read and follow excellent photographs.
Great ideas .......2005-08-19
This book was great i was able to utilize some of the techniques provided to enhance my workout.

Book Description
This young adult novel depicts a teenager's struggle with the clash between the streets and the classroom
Three things matter to fifteen-year-old David López: his family, his pigeons and his gang. But with the death of his father, David's life in Little Arroyo becomes a struggle for everything he once cared about. "I'm gonna split . . . I've got to get out of here," David says, when his mother suggests that he live with his well-meaning, but misguided, Uncle Joe.
His home life in turmoil, David turns to rely more on his best friend Robert and their gang, who stand behind the local hero Big Toben. Big Toben has it all: the brawn, the speed, and the courage to stand up to the rival gang, The Eastsiders. David can place all of his trust in Big Toben, whether he is charging for a touchdown on the football field, throwing bottles from the roof at a dance or slipping away from the police.
With Big Toben at his side, his life improves until one awful afternoon, when David is forced to decide between his loyalty to the gang and his own future. Will the influence of his family, his teachers, and his friends, help David make the right choice?
