Book Description
The must-have book for every gardener. Learn to understand weeds through 300 full-color photographs and profiles of over 75 common garden weeds. This book has the definitive answers and practical guidance on determining if weeds are friend or foe.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Weed Book.......2006-04-03
What is good about this book goes beyond good photos of the weed and helping you identify, it is also fun to read. You really learn about the weed. You learn which weeds you can eliminate by eating and which weeds you really to have to fight against. The only weakness of this book, it doesn't have a key like the more technical, less informative weed book I own. This is actually less of issue than it could be, since I enjoy just reading this book from time to time, but I get no joy from reading the more technical book. Since I reread the whole book, I have little need for a key.
Wonderful overview of some common weed problems........2002-05-01
The days of needing two weed books - one that loves 'em, one that hates 'em - is over! Grab Weeds: Friend or Foe? for a wonderful change of pace in the world of weeds! While Sally Roth certainly does not encourage rampant weed growth in our lawns and gardens, her new book takes a relaxed and reasonable approach to weeds in our lives. Here is all the info in one place - without the usual biases. Ms. Roth does an excellent job of providing the pros (friend? - chickweed - stellaria media - can be used in salads before flowering) and cons (foe? - lamb's quarters - chenopodium album - can produce 75,000 seeds per plant) of each weed and allows the gardener to be discerning enough to make her own decision. But then this book goes the extra step with its section on what to do with weeds - like gardening WITH them - wow - healing with them, crafting with them. Although Ms. Roth does get to herbicides she does so responsibly and only after she has provided information on mulching, hand weeding, hoeing, and flame-throwers(!?). Herbicides are discussed in an excellent chart that provides a breakdown by type of garden and then discusses what the typical weed problem in that garden may be, what active ingredient may be best to use including some brand names, a description of how the herbicide works, plus any health concerns and/or environmental concerns a gardener may have by using a specific active ingredient. While there are clear photos of the identified weeds, this book would be doubly useful had there been seedling pictures, particularly since Ms. Roth spends much time explaining how important it is to be preventative and to pull weeds very early on. A great gift book for any gardener!
Product Description
Weeds plague every garden. This illustrated guide to controlling them -- or using them to your advantage -- gives you all the information you need. The book: features a detailed gallery with more than 70 common garden weed varieties; shows & describes what each weed looks like fully grown & in flower (life cycle, dispersal, ultimate height, other names, etc.); contains a guide to controlling weeds with both conventional & organic methods (herbicides, in the water garden, in paved areas, gravel & rock gardens, in the lawn); lists potential uses so you can decide whether to keep a weed or not (gardening, healing weeds, edible weeds, weeds for craft); & tells you how to use weeds to create a striking wild garden effect. A Reader's Digest Book.

Book Description
The CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) has revolutionised optical astronomy during the past 20 years, and specialised astronomical CCD cameras are now even more affordable, colour is standard, and they provide spectacular results.
Digital Astrophotography: The State of the Art, provides some examples of the best images, and gives readers hints and tips about how to get the best out of this extraordinary technology.
Experts in CCD astronomy from North America and Europe have contributed to this book, illustrating their help and advice with many beautiful colour images – the book is in full colour throughout. Techniques range from using simple webcams to highly technical aspects such as supernovae patrolling. Computer processing, stacking and image-enhancement are detailed, along with many hints and tips from the experts.
Customer Reviews:
Where's the beef?.......2007-07-30
I agree with other reviewers. There is a good section on imaging with CCD cameras but the other sections (Web cams, Digital SLRs) are weak. Not enough detail for the beginner that wants to get out and image. Too many photographs that don't provide substantial educational value. This is a multi-authored book and there is too much variability in the quality of the chapters. I own other books in Patrick Moore's series that I enjoyed, but this is not one of them.
Dissapointing.......2006-07-26
More like a small coffe table book than a comprehensive treatment of the subject. I expected more detail about How To and less glitsey pictures: Book is filled with " Here's a picture of...." and then a nice color photo. I'm returning this one.
Don
Covers a lot of ground.......2006-05-19
Let me start by saying - Do not make this your primary source for information on digital astrophotography. It has a ton of good info for a total beginner like me, but it also leaves out a lot on info.
It has a unique format in that each chapter has a different author (a claimed expert in each field). Some were much better than others. All chapters did a decent job of explaining the process of each kind of technology, but in almost all cases I was left with more questions than answers.
The book did give me a lot of ideas and areas to further research, but I was hoping when I bought it that it would give recommendations for type of equipment to buy and how to use it to get the best results.
BOTTOM LINE -- This book is a great source for info and ideas, just don't assume it will be your only source as it leaves a lot unexplained.

David has a blue cat........2003-05-15
A great tale of David's five young children as they explore the solar system with their blue cat and electric car. I enjoyed this novel, and suggest you go buy the book.
Hello Mr. Reidy.......2003-05-15
A great book. Talks of 5 children and a blue cat and an electric car - and of course the solar system. Havn't read it though, that might be a problem...
Is the Solar System really a System?.......2002-12-11
David would have you believe it is... But deep down, we know it isn't. If you want to read about what the Solar System is, I highly recommend this book. If you want to read about what the Solar System isn't, i strongly urge you to get a different book. As this may leave you slightly disapointed. All in all, the moon is a pretty big rock, how big you may ask?, nobody knows, but Thanks to this book, you may well find out one day.
All in all, a good read.

Book Description
This report for the first time presents and analyzes a wide range of global data at the watershed level, assessing 145 watersheds around the world. The analysis focuses on watershed, as ecological units and on the risks of degradation from human activities, which may undermine their ability to provide ecological services and maintain intact the biodiversity found within them. The analysis is based on 15 global indicators that characterize watersheds according to their value, current condition, and vulnerability to potential degradation. These indicators, presented in more than 150 maps, give a unique global perspective on the largess transboundary watersheds, as well as many smaller basins and sub-basins.
Book Description
Within the past decade, lacrosse has seen explosive growth on the elementary, junior and high school, and college levels, rapidly becoming one of America's most popular playing sports. Lifelong lacrosse player and coach Daniel Morris, along with noted author Michael Morris, distill the essence of this exciting, fast-paced game into one compact volume, teaching everything the beginning and intermediate coach needs to know about the rules, equipment, skills, and drills of this venerable game.
Unlike other books on lacrosse, this guide reflects recent important rule changes, as well as the latest techniques in offense and defense, stick-handling, and advances in equipment that have transformed the game as it is played today. Chapters focus on critical elements of individual and team play, conducting practices, skill-building drills, and a playbook of offensive and defensive strategies. A resource list of suppliers, camps, and additional information is included.
This is a book that will find a place on every coach and player's shelf.
Customer Reviews:
Best coaching book I have seen.......2007-05-07
I am coaching youth, middle school, and travel lax teams and have very little on-field lacrosse experience. Of the tools I have found, this book is the most straightforward. When I see the most experienced coaches work, they are using the drills in this book. There is still a lack of good books on intermediate lacrosse offensive and defensive strategies, but this handles all the basics.
Great book for beginning coaches.......2006-10-02
I am very pleased with this book. Great outline of all aspects of the sport. A must have for beginning coaches and/or parents with kids starting to play lacrosse.
Lacrosse Newbie.......2006-06-26
Since it is nearly impossible to find anything in "Lacrosse for Adults" for those who are new to the sport and would love to learn to play, I got this book in the hopes of learning the basics. I haven't had a chance to put the new knowledge to the test in either play or instruction, but it was a very valuable tool for the novice player or coach. GO MAMMOTH! GO OUTLAWS!
Exceptionally Helpful.......2006-03-25
I am the parent of two young boys who are showing an interest in lacrosse and recently signed up for a local youth team. I grew up playing baseball and soccer and did not have any idea how the game of lacrosse is played. This book has given me the knowledge of basic skills that I need to play with my sons now and I can see that its more advanced chapters will be useful for years to come. Although its title suggests that it is geared for coaching, I highly recommend it to any parent who is interested in learning about lacrosse and supporting their children as they become involved with this growing sport.
...at last!.......2006-03-20
Yes, at last a book that covers everything from novice to coaching for Lacrosse. Well written and informative, which makes it interesting and a easy read. I bought this book for my nephew who's a high school Lacrosse coach. He was thrilled, he told me there is almost nothing written about this sport, especially in such an easy to read and informative style. As he said. "If you're interested in Lacrosse, this is the book."
Book Description
It has been called the Everest of the whitewater world. However, unlike Everest, the Tsangpo River in Tibet has yet to be explored and charted. No other place in the world possesses more drama than the magnificent series of gorges that house the Tsangpo. Looping around the eastern anchor of the Himalayan Range, cutting the deepest canyon on Earth, and emerging more than nine thousand feet below on the plains of India, the Tsangpo is a geographical riddle that has fascinated Western explorers since 1926 when botanist F. Kingdon Ward described it as one of modern exploration's greatest challenges.
In 1998, a world-class, four-man paddling team attempted to make history by becoming the first to navigate a remote, 140-mile stretch of the river. But when one of the menrenowned chemist and kayak racer Doug Gordonfell victim to the lethal strength of the river's current, their expedition was abruptly abandoned. Gordon's remains were never found, and the mystery of the Tsangpo endures. Here is the complete, never-before-told story of the ill-fated expedition. Wick Walker's Courting the Diamond Sow is an enthralling epic, featuring the kayakers' firsthand diary accounts as they passed through the gorges, fascinating insights into this enigmatic corner of the world and the attempts to explore it, and 16 pages of dramatic, full-color photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Story Never Developed.......2006-11-01
I was disappointed with this book. The story line never really developed. It jumped around and I never got a good feel for the expedition. I like to kayak and was hoping for a more descriptive book. Not that it matters, but the pictures were certainly lacking as well. Very few shots of the actual river itself.
Not enough story here for a book.......2005-01-10
Since someone on the expedition died right near the beginning, & they aborted the trip after that, there really isn't enough story here to fill a book. To make it long enough, most of the book is descriptions & history of the region, & past history about the people on the expedition. While some of this was interesting, most of it dragged & was hard to get through. The actualy tragedy was interesting & moving, but was just a few pages of the book. And then there was the usual descriptions of problems with porters (how many adventure books do we need to read about that?), & the people struggling to make sense of their friend's death. There were a few mountaineering quotes from other climbers that were interesting. But over all the book did not flow, was not compelling, & was rather disappointing since nothing really ended up being explored. As a short story it might have been better. And while some of the descriptions were boringly detailed, they didn't explain things like basic kayaking or rapids terms that they used. This made some of the parts that were actually interesting hard to understand for laymen. I did learn some, but while I usually read all the books I own multiple times over the years, I don't expect to be reading this one again.
Diamond Sow or Last River??.......2004-01-20
My comments come after finishing the books "The Last River" and "Courting the Diamond Sow", both of which I read over the last 2 weeks, and was provoked to write by a couple of factors. Reading the existing reviews for "The Last River" particularly, I was struck by the number of people who felt it necessary to slam the book.
First, after reading these books I have a better appreciation for the writing skill needed to write a book that is entirely engaging, brings the personalities to life, allows the reader to become part of the adventure, all the while being true to its subject.
Second, I appreciate that the writers made the story available so that we could learn about this trip and I don't mean to suggest that either effort was a waste of time and that the writers should hang up their quills.
Sadly, in my opinion neither of the books written about the same 1998 Tsangpo journey is terribly engaging. Last River is an easier read while I found the first half, particularly, of Sow a literary slog. Not sure if it was bogged down in description or what; I just found it slow going.
Neither book had much of an ebb and flow in the narrative. Even as the tragic events of Doug Gordon's death neared, there was nothing to indicate that one's blood should be heating up and that now was not the time to put the book down. They were very flat in that regard. I differentiate between sensationalism and a literary tidal cycle; perhaps the authors were extremely cognizant of avoiding the former.
The Last River spends a greater percentage of ink relating the experiences of the 4 paddlers on the river and off while Sow balances more equally the stories of both paddlers and support team. Also, Wickliffe Walker in Sow deals with the `fallout' from Gordon's death much more comprehensively than does Todd Balf; Walker spends several pages relating the effort needed to battle rumours and judgments that were circulating at home half-way around the world.
While the actual journey and the salient events I expect to remember, these books I expect to forget quickly (but then, I forgot Into Thin Air fairly quickly also). If there are poignant moments from the tale and thoughts to come away with, the one I recall most easily is the second-guessing of Gordon's paddling buddies as described most clearly in The Last Rivers account of Roger Zbel's "What if" self-flagellation. As a paddler, I pray that I am never faced with that.
.
It was disappointing that The Last River did not have any photos at all of the area and only a minimalist map. On the other hand, Sow's small collection of photos was hardly comprehensive though the satellite photo was helpful in placing the story.
Nether book rates more than a 2.5 - 3, in my mind, nor does one stand head and shoulders above the other.
My context: Canadian class IV kayaker; 3 Himalayan river trips in Nepal (in fact and unbeknownst, I was on the Tamur River at exactly the time this group was on the Tsangpo); read years ago the American Whitewater article of the Gordon/McEwan trip down the Homothko in BC.
Courting the Diamond Sow.......2003-09-20
Anyone interested not only in kayaking, but also in mountain expeditions, exploration and trekking should read this. An account of truly BIG WATER, Tibetan mysteries, individual courage, top-notch kayaking, featuring some of the World's best kayakers.
Great Adventure Story.......2003-08-14
Great adventure story for the kayaking community
Book Description
Looks can be deceiving ...
It's no secret that pretty, popular Sara Eastborne has a twin brother named Tim. Sara had told her friends at Sweet Valley High that Tim chose to live with their father on the East Coast when their parents were divorced. But she didn't tell them that Tim was in reform school!
Now Tim's out of reform school and ready to start a new life in Sweet Valley with Sara and their mother. Sara desperately wants Tim to keep his criminal past a secret. When Tim becomes friends with Elizabeth Wakefield and starts dating Sara's best friend, Amanda Hayes, Sara is afraid that the truth will come out and her social life at Sweet Valley High will be ruined.
Tim has betrayed her before, and she isn't going to let him do it again, no matter what.
Customer Reviews:
No More Chances.......2003-01-31
This I found to be a very interesting SVH.Some can be a tad ho-hum,but the others really hold your interest, this one included. To the story itself;"I'm the good one," Sara told herself.I didn't agree.Sara had some serious issues with her twin,Tim,who was trying to turn himself around after years of reckless behaviour. She was cold and unforgiving and not willing to trust that he had changed.I actually found her behaviour a little bit horrible!,and I thought she was acting worse than Tim probably had.I read this novel really quickly,it is really good,so it is probably worth reading if you are a Sweet VAlley fan.
Average little-known character SVH book.......2002-05-27
This is a middle of the road Sweet Valley High book. I personally prefer the books that are centered around the twins or the other main characters such as Lila, Bruce, Todd, Enid or Steven. There's usually a book thrown in about some random Sweet Valley High student, and this is one of them. This time a student named Sara is embarassed by her reform-school twin, Tim. Sara has made up all these flattering stories about Tim to her classmates, thinking he will stay back east where he belongs and no one will really know the truth. Of course the paroled Tim wants to live with his mom and sis in Sweet Valley, so he shows up one day and befriends Liz Wakefield (which is a requirement in Sweet Valley). Sara stays away from Tim, but Liz is there to make sure they are one happy family again.
