Rudimentary and generic.......2002-12-13
There are many more comprehensive books available, this book wasn't even useful as a "quick brushup" or as an initial primer because it was so generic. Also, too much time is spent on really minor things - one sentance would have sufficed rather than several pages on how a messy office versus a clean office makes a different impression on the interviewee. Fleshing out how to ask useful and incisive interview questions and how to identify warning flags would have been much more useful.
I've been very impressed with "Hiring the Best: A Manager's Guide to Effective Interviewing", and both newbie as well as experienced interviewers in my team have greatly benefited from it.
Great advice for getting the info you want in an interview!.......2000-06-18
As a successful, self-taught business owner and entreprenuer for over 20 years, I have read them all and this simple book, that can be read in a matter of hours, has some of the finest insights around. It's easy. It's simple. Author Sachs gives examples of what to ask, what not to ask, and the way to word the question to get the best answer. I have owned this book for five years and continually refer to it for a refresher, give it my managers to read before they interview and recommend it to friends. You can spend a lot more money, but I have yet to find a nuts and bolts book that's any better.

Book Description
As the ruinous Dust Bowl settled in the early 1940s, agronomist Edward Faulkner dropped what Nature magazine termed "an agricultural bombshell" when he blamed the then universally used moldboard plow for disastrous pillage of the soil. Faulkner's assault on the orthodoxy of his day will stimulate today's farmers to seek out fresh solutions to the problems that plague modern American agriculture. Plowman's Folly is bound together here with its companion volume A Second Look.

a pionner work challenging old agricultural practices.......1998-10-05
This is the pionner book that had set grounds to new agricultural methods of soil management. Decades before direct planting and soil conservation became fashionable, Faulkner challenged the multisecular tradition which stated that plowing the soil was mandatory to any farmer. This book was praised by Louis Bromfield (Out of the Earth), when he launched his agricultural revolution at Malabar Farm.

Customer Reviews:
Researcher.......2005-09-15
This book was purchased for my division's project on MPA. It was told that this book mainly addressed conservation of the natural resources of tropical coast and seas. It is useful as a source book. This book is divided into three parts. Part one introduces everything about MPA, a great overview, including roles of MPA, site planing, stakeholder involvement, systematic selection of MPA, strategies and tolls for planning and managing MPA, and the legal basis of MPA. Part two and three introduce cases of various MPA. This "Guide to the Cases" is presented to enhance the reader's search for relevant cases. This book also includes major fundamental skills for MPA except for case study part. Therefore, potential readers may think that this book may not be useful, however, our project coordinator is convinced of its usefulness to MPA planner. In our case, we were hoping to obtain assistance on socioeconomic indicators for MPA specification for our country. At first, we were confused at first that we may not use this book directly, but soon with further reading, we knew it is applied through analyses. It is a good manuel book our purpose and probably for people who are concerned with MPA in similar aspects.

Like its teammates in the Dummies series, NASCAR for Dummies is cleverly organized and clearly focused. Winston Cup Series driver Mark Martin is in the driver's seat, providing a speedy tour through America's fastest-growing sport. In typical Dummies style, NASCAR for Dummies is filled with fun stuff such as lists of the 10 greatest drivers of all time, the 10 can't-miss races, and 10 future stars. It also contains plenty of information--from what NASCAR stands for and what makes a stock car a stock car to the rules of Pit Road and quick overviews of the 21 racetracks that host Winston Cup Series races. There's even good, practical advice about attending races (secure lodging well in advance, decide between infield and grandstand tickets, etc.) and pointers on how to best appreciate the televised races. After reading this book, you'll have no trouble qualifying as a NASCAR fan. --Sunny Delaney

Customer Reviews:
NASCAR For Dummies.......2007-06-11
I am a Sports Illustrated, ESPN sorta reader, anything short and with lots of pictures I will read, short attention span. I am a NASCAR fan and thought I knew alot about the sport and originally bought the book for my wife, but I must say I not only read the whole book in two days I also learned alot that I did not know or what I thought I knew. Excellent book, interesting reading and even if you are not into the sport it is just fun to read. Excellent Excellent book......
So-So.......2007-06-02
I bought this book in 2004 when I first started getting into Nascar, and even back then it was a little outdated. Now, with all the changes in rules and even teams, its more than "a little outdated". One of the chapters includes a list of drivers to watch for in the future, including Champion Matt Kenseth and Dale Earnhardt Junior along with some drivers who barely race now. Even the information on tracks is past tense by now. For instance, we went to Lowe's Motor Speedway and followed his information on where race shops were located, only to discover that 90% of those had moved to different cities/locations. There are some basics in here that the newbie might appreciate, but be warned that it isn't up to date.
I learned so much!.......2006-07-17
I am a new fan to NASCAR and I already know more than most longtime fans thanks to this book. It is written by Mark Martin, so you know it has lots of "insider" info. Even though Martin has been in the business for a long time, he wrote in a way that made it easy for me to understand, even with my limited knowledge. I enjoy watching NASCAR races every weekend even more because I actually know what's going on! I now know what a track bar is and what happens when you put a "rubber" in the right rear. Before reading this book, I would have been pretty sure that was obscene! You will enjoy reading this book but you also be able to keep it around for reference when you want to learn more about a particular track or adjustments being made on pit road. I highly recommend this book to a new fan or the most diehard fan out there.
Good intro for the NASCAR novice.......2005-10-12
I wanted to learn about NASCAR and knew nothing about it... and this book did a good job of introducing it to me. My one complaint is it doesn't talk enough about what's going on in the actual races, and I still feel a little lost about what exactly is happening on the track, how exactly the race works, and what specific strategies the drivers are using. A little more on the actual racing and this book would've been perfect. But it's still an excellent intro if you're looking to learn about the sport.
Turn left and hit the gas.......2005-09-18
My boss once jokingly told that's what NASCAR is about: turn left and hit the gas.
Then I went to the Alllstate 400 at the Brickyard and now I've read Mark Martin's NASCAR FOR DUMMIES. It's looking a little more complicated than fast left turns.
The author's enthusiasm for the sport of NASCAR racing is contagious. As the driver of the Viagra-sponsored car #6 in the Nextel Cup series, he ought to know what he's talking about from the inside out and about 188 mph.
Chapter 1 ('NASCAR Racing-the best sport around', pp. 9-24) tells you how men (well, mostly men) driving cars that look vaguely like your father's Taurus ended up racing them around oval tracks in front of millions of spectators and television viewers and why you couldn't possibly not be excited about this. Like most professional sports, NASCAR has acquired corporate sponsors. It is arguably the most logo-plastered sport in the world, a fact that Martin explores in 'The Big Business of NASCAR' (ch. 2, pp. 25-34). Martin convinces you that that's a good thing, and before you know it, you know the primary car sponsors as well as the drivers and their car numbers.
The rest of the book takes you from zero to sixty in a fairly easy stretch of reading. If, like me, you started this book after attending a race or two and just getting at toe-hold on the sport, you won't end up an expert. But you'll be in good shape to understand the basics of every major area of the sport and to learn more as your exposure grows.
Mark Martin is not a great writer, but you don't buy the Dummies series for great writing. You buy Tolstoy if you want great writing. What Martin effectively does is lets you know that there's a whole lot more to NASCAR racing than you thought when you got yourself into this, but that you can learn a fair chunk of it pretty quickly. It's also organized as a handy reference book for when you need to go back to look up a topic you breezed over a little quickly on the first go-around.
I bought this book because there's a strong NASCAR culture in the company I joined. My boss sponsors the 18, driven by Bobby Labonte. See, I knew how to say that right. You can too. Buy the book.

Over the years, millions of kids have been dragged to Washington to see the grand edifices and historic monuments of our country's capital, and most of those millions have returned home without the desire to ever see a statue, senator, or Supreme anything ever again. But it doesn't have to be like that. Beth Rubin not only knows Washington D.C. backwards and forwards, she knows kids, too, and that makes for a very good guidebook. Well organized, with a variety of useful information on family hotels, restaurants, shopping, and entertainment, this is a full-service guide with a family focus. Aside from such necessities as which hotels offer cribs and rollaway beds, Rubin knows where your children can take simulated orbital flights, dine with U.S. representatives, touch a moon rock, crawl through an African termite mound replica, pet a horseshoe crab, or go swimming, biking, or in-line skating. It'll take the family Washington trip to new heights.

Great aid for trip planning to D.C. with kids in a range of ages.......2007-09-30
This book was a tremendous asset in planning our family's first ever D.C. trip. This was our first real encounter with big city transportation and I felt really sorry for those families who were lined up at the Metro ticket machines trying to decipher them. Also some really great hints for "cheap eats"(Union Station has something for everyone & won't break the bank),beating the heat, and sight-seeing options when the "big attractions" were impossible to get to. This guide was invaluable in planning our days with children who range in age from 7 -16. Purchased Fodor's Around Washington, D.C. with Kids (Around the City with Kids)which was simple for my children to read and enjoy. Using the Fodor's book in conjunction with this Frommer's my family spent many enjoyable evenings over 4 months planning our trip.
Excellent book for travelling with young kids.......2006-11-29
I found this book to be very helpful and complete. The humor and affection that the author shows for the area and kids in general was very welcome departure from the otherwise stuffy travel guides I'm used to reading. I found her insights about timing visits, local restaurants to check out, and walking tours to be very handy. Reading her guide was like getting advice from a helpful Mom. It's sold me on the Frommer Kids series, and I'm looking forward to using them on my next trip!
Must have for travel to DC-- even without kids.......2006-07-04
I have four editions of this book and I would not consider going to DC without it. It is worth the investment to make sure that you are getting the latest and greatest information. I have NEVER had a problem with the information if the edition is current. A quick flip through the sixth and eighth editions shows how much info has been updated, plus almost every listing provides a web address (in addition to all the other contact information) so you can get more detailed information if you desire.
When we are in DC, this book stays in my backpack at all times. The maps are clear and conscise, and the authors helpful hints have saved us a lot of time. I have all the info from the washington.org and AAA and just about everything that it covered in scores of brochures and booklets is in this book. It truly is the only book you need!
Great for things to do, not so for hotels and restaurants.......2006-02-13
This book is an excellent guide for things to do in the D.C. area with kids. We live in D.C. and were looking for new things to do, especially with our 3 year old in mind. We bought the book and learned about exciting locations and activites that we never knew about. For example the Doll and Toy Museum, Naval Observatory and Amazonia exhibit at the National Zoo.
The restaurant and dining guides though are way off, the do not include the best food (including child friendly) nor convenient, fun and affordable hotels, infact they recommend some of the worst! Of course we've gained this knowledge from living here for 6 years, still would expect better form a guidebook...for food dining and hotels I'd recommend Lonely Planet's guide to D.C. area.
Only other downer was driving to the Childrens Museum only to find it was closed until 2009. Still I have the 6th edition and the 7th edition hopefully is updated with this info.
A Must-Have for Any Family Heading to Our Nation's Capital.......2004-04-23
If you've never been to DC with kids, you need this book. I used it primarily for its comprehensive reviews of family-friendly hotels and restaurants (of course, you should call the establishments yourself to verify that the information is up to date) smartly divided into geographical areas--downtown, Georgetown, Capital Hill, etc. Maps pinpointing sites and attractions were equally helpful.

Squeal. Snitch. Rat. Whatever you call it, teens have always regarded the betrayal of peers--by giving incriminating information to the authorities--as the ultimate moral crime. Even dedicated nonconformists like cynical Ellis, sharp and witty Jack, brilliant Carrie, and wannabe Teresa are shocked when Bruce, the trusted fifth member of their outsider posse, answers a teacher's questions about the day the other four shared a bottle of Jack Daniel's in a schoolroom where they had been left alone on their honor.
Bruce is appalled when his friends are suspended from school and banned from graduating. They blame him for the harsh punishment they receive--and eventually, so does the whole student body. He is ostracized and left alone to ponder his crime. But while Bruce regrets what happened because of his actions, he can't apologize. For him, truth is the only way there is. True to his uncomfortable nickname--Saint Bruce--he is moral simply because it's his nature. "Why?" his friends keep asking. But how much are they to blame? Should Bruce have lied to win their approval? And shouldn't the teacher who protected her job by betraying Bruce's confidence bear some of the guilt?
Wisely, Tres Seymour brings this short and intense story to a satisfying conclusion, but leaves the ethical dilemma unresolved. Teens will be fascinated with the novel's delicate and intricate examination of a moral issue that has real meaning for them, and savvy parents and teachers will find it an open door to some provocative discussion. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell

Living What You Believe........2004-02-08
How is a person to live ethically and keep his or her morals in an unethical world? What about "teenagers"? A lot of people say that they're going to do everything anyway so why try to stop them. Issues like these are what THE REVELATION OF SAINT BRUCE deals with. Bruce Wells is for the most part an ordinary person struggling through adolescence. He gets nervous around girls he likes, he wants to be liked, and he's struggling to find his place in the world. However, Bruce is a little different from everyone else because he has a strong ethical and moral code which he not only believes in, but lives out in his daily life. He gets upset at his best friend, Jack, for taking quarters from a pay phone. Bruce doesn't lie. He doesn't cheat or steal. He lives the life that Christ called him to live. People notice and they start calling him "Saint Bruce".
Like most people with strong convictions, Bruce has a group of close friends: Jack, Carrie, Theresa, and Ellis. Ellis is the wild card of the bunch and there always is. Bruce thinks that the group has allowed them to be a part of their lives. What he doesn't realize is that the group is really following him and not vice versa. Bruce has a strong charisma and he doesn't even know it. His friends start calling themselves the "Disciples of Saint Bruce".
Anyway, Bruce ends up home sick for a day and while he is gone his friends do some drinking in school. Later they offer to tell him what they did. Bruce asks them not to, but they do anyway. When confronted by a teacher about what he knows, Bruce tells the truth and his four friends end up suspended from school for the rest of the semester. For the next five months Bruce is constantly abused. People stop talking to him. They start pulling practical jokes on him. Some tougher students physically beat him occassionaly. His own sister tells him he was wrong to tell the truth. Hardly any one seems to understand. The semester ends and another one begins and life becomes even more interesting for Bruce.
THE REVELATION OF SAINT BRUCE is a great book. It has a great story and raises some very important moral and ethical issues that are relevant not only to those in adolescence, but to adults as well. The book illustrates just how difficult it can be to actually live what you believe. There are some who might say the book isn't very realistic and that a student like Bruce Wells would never exist. This isn't true because I was a student like Bruce Wells and I experienced some of the same things he did in this book. It's not always easy to live what you believe, but it is more than worthwhile.
The Adventure of Bruce.......2002-03-02
A review by Trevor
Bruce is a goodie to shoes that doesn't do anything wrong. He has 3 good friends named Jack, Carrie, and Theresa. Jack is a little on the wild side, Carrie is a goodie good also. Theresa is like jack. His 3 friends and a kid named Ellis get drunk at school. Bruce was absent over this time and when he comes back they tell him. A teacher finds evidence of the 4 drinking and Bruce rats on them. The four won't talk to him and in the end of the story his 3 friends leave Ellis and become friend with Bruce again.
The characters in the story were believable but did some things that wouldn't happen. I liked Bruce but he got in a crash and didn't get hurt at all. Then he walked the rest of the way to school, this wouldn't happen. Jack was my favorite character in the book because he was daring and dangerous. Carrie was very boring and wasn't talked about much. Theresa was cool because she was the first to start talking to Bruce. The subject didn't really appeal to me. It might have sounded like it was real. I don't really like hearing about people's problems. The author says the story very fast, but to where you could understand it. I wasn't relieved at the end of the story because I was never worried. The story was perfect length and easier to read.
I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, I had too much detail. I think eleven or twelve year olds would enjoy it because the people in the book are that age.
Hard questions, no clear answers.......2000-05-17
Bruce Wells is a lost student in a large high school in this book. Bruce has a small group of students that he hangs out with but he doesn't really fit in. He has a strong moral code that none of them understand. In one chapter, Bruce believes that Jack is wrong, when Jack takes quarters from a broken pay phone. The rest of the group envy Jack's luck. Because of Bruce's beliefs, the rest of the kids start calling him Saint Bruce. He struggles with this title but not enough. The others do not realize what is involved in Sainthood. "The Disciples of Saint Bruce" get into trouble and expect Bruce not tell. But it is not in his nature to lie when asked to tell the truth. The "Disciples" suffer dire consequences from Bruce's confession, but so does Bruce. Who is right? Who is wrong? There is no clear cut answer. This is a thought provoking book. Several of the characters have trouble fitting in at school and kids today will relate to this. To make matters fuzzier, faculty members do not help in this story. Most are more concerned about keeping their jobs than helping the students. This book will make kids think which might make some readers uncomfortable.
