            Book Description

            In the last thirty years, gamma-ray bursts have grown from an oddity to a central position in astrophysics. Not only are they the largest explosions since the big bang, capable of flooding most of the universe with gamma-rays, but their brilliance serves as a backlight that can illuminate the cosmos far deeper into the early universe than any other object. Their unpredictability has forced researchers to use extreme measures to observe them: completely autonomous satellites and robotic ground-based telescopes. Their bizarre physical properties have pushed us to develop new theories of astrophysical explosions. Topics include: global properties of GRBs; X-ray flashes; ultra-high energy gamma-rays, neutrinos, gravity waves; prompt emission and early afterglows; relativistic jets and polarization; GRB030329; GRB progenitors; GRB connection to supernovae; dark versus bright GRBs; late afterglows; GRBs and cosmology; general observations; general theory; analysis and observation techniques; present satellites; Swift satellite; future satellites; and robotic observing systems.

              Book Description

              Wild Alberta: A Visual Celebration is a journey of discovery that invites Albertans and visitors to explore the wildlife heritage and natural wonders of the province_s four eco-regions: boreal forest, aspen parkland, badlands, and mountains.

              Despite the fact that Alberta is not as wild as it once was, Lynch shows us that there is still much to celebrate, much to discover, much to savour and admire, and much to protect for the future. It is also a testament to the exceptional natural beauty and biological significance of the province that, of the thirteen locations in Canada designated by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites in recognition of their outstanding value to humanity, five are found in Alberta: Banff/Jasper National Parks, Waterton National Park, Wood Buffalo National Park, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, and Dinosaur Provincial Park.

              Lavishly illustrated with exceptionally beautiful colour photographs and sketches, Wild Alberta: A Visual Celebration describes Alberta_s magnificent landscapes, flora, and fauna. Throughout the text Lynch also outlines some of the big changes - both success stories and areas of concern - that have occurred in the wildlife populations of the province over the last hundred years.

              Recognized and respected as one of North America_s leading wildlife and natural history photographers, Wayne Lynch has spent the last twenty-five years capturing images of wildlife in wild places the world over. His impressive photo credits include hundreds of magazine covers, thousands of calendar shots, and tens of thousands of images published in over two dozen countries. Lynch is also an award-winning science writer, a popular guest lecturer, and a veteran photo-safari leader. He has authored more than two dozen highly acclaimed natural history books including The Great Northern Kingdom, Wild Birds Across the Prairies and Mountain Bears.

              Wayne lives with his wife, author Aubrey Lang, in Calgary.

              Customer Reviews:

              4 out of 5 stars Good as memory - but not fact.......2007-04-11

              Steel Dynasty will help anyone a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers relive the glory days of the 1970s. But don't take any statement of fact in this book as - well, fact.

              Page 34 - "Three Rivers [Stadium] also sat on a Delaware Indian burial ground where General George Washington fought many battles while protecting nearby Fort Duquesne." I don't know anything about a Delaware burial ground, but I lived in Pittsburgh for over 30 years and never even head such a claim. George Washington passed by the forks of the Ohio once in 1758 when he was in his 20s. No fighting involved. Later, George Washington did fight one battle about 8 miles upriver, where the Turtle Creek empties in to the Monongahela. He was then a Colonel to General Braddock who was killed there. George Washington did not become a General until the American Revolutionary War which kept him far away from a fort of any kind in what was then the country's interior. If this isn't convincing enough, consider that no matter what war or skirmish he was involved in, he never would have defended Fort Duquesne. Fort Duquesne was a French fort, and George Washington of Virginia, as an English subject, or an American, would have fought to protect Fort Pitt.

              Page 34 is pretty early in the book. The book one just paid for and wants so badly to read - so one keeps on. Then comes some commentary on the pass that Lynn Swann caught in Super Bowl IX. The one that everybody remembers, not only because it was a fantastic play, but because it's been immortalized by NFL Films, just like author Chastain says. Except that he's describing a different catch. He discusses also that very acrobatic, indelible catch, but speaks of it like just another play.

              The remainder of the book is therefore read with suspect credibility. And it turns into nostalgia of the four Super Bowl seasons with not enough on the league's rule changes to merit the subtitle: The Team That Changed the NFL.

              Bill Chastain is not too bad of a writer, and somewhat hard working, but not hard enough. This book needs to be written by a Pittsburgher.

              5 out of 5 stars Super Steelers!.......2006-06-11

              I am a lifelong Steelers fan and enjoyed reminiscing and reliving my 1970's Steelers experience through this book. It is well-written, utilizing interviews from players (Steelers and opponents), coaches, and front office personnel, to create an candid first-hand impression. Along the way, I learned lots of things I did not before know or understand about the game of football, the history of the "Stillers", and the Super Steelers of the 1970's. Great read and highly recommended!

              5 out of 5 stars Steelers.......2006-03-14

              I loved this book. I have been a die hard Steeler fan for 40 years, so I remember all the bad times & good times. This book was very well written, & I even learned a few things I did not know. I would refer this book to all my friends I relatives.
              Susan Pritt

              5 out of 5 stars classic Steelers.......2006-02-14

              Big Ben: 27-4 as a starter (2004-2005 seasons)---only losses (3 of which were injury-related): Patriots, 2004 AFC Championship game (if Plax holds on to sure TD pass, we are only down 7 with about 7+ minutes to go in that game; Ben did some good things and was battling thumb and toe injuries) and also in 2005 (if Randle El doesn't get `cute' and lateral that pass to Ward, we probably win; again, Ben did some good things), as well as the Bengals in 2005 (Ben has beaten Carson Palmer's Bengals 3 times: twice in 2004 and big-time in the AFC Wild-Card game in 2005; Ben had 3 TD passes in this lone defeat and was battling a thumb injury) and Indy in 2005 (as we know, he got revenge in the AFC Divisional Playoff game; Ben threw a TD pass to Ward in this Monday night defeat and was coming off an injury-induced layoff).

              Ben's FIRST NFL game: 2004 Pre-season at Ford Field vs. the Lions...last game of 2005 season: 2/5/06 at FORD FIELD, SUPER BOWL XL VICTORY!!!

              So Ben didn't play a superb game in Super Bowl XL and there was some controversy...

              --Super Bowl IX, 1/12/75: Steelers win 16-6 over the Vikings---Future Hall-of-Famer Terry Bradshaw is only 9 for 14 for 96 yards...BEN WAS 9 FOR 21 FOR 123 YARDS...Bradshaw threw a lone TD...BEN RAN FOR A LONE TD... Future Hall-of-Famer Fran Tarkenton's numbers were putrid: 11 for 26 for 102 yards, 3 interceptions, NO TD's! We were only winning 2-0 going into the third quarter (on a safety); a boring game. The Steelers wore their white shirts and Terry had a beard (the other 3 Super Bowls: black-and-gold shirts, Terry clean shaven)...WE WORE OUR WHITE SHIRTS IN XL AND BEN HAD A BEARD...the game turned on a VERY controversial "fumble-that-wasn't" by the Steelers Larry Brown: the Steelers left the field dejected, the Vikings were in prime territory...then the officials ruled Brown was down before the ball came loose (no way!!!!!)...and the rest is history;

              --Super Bowl X, 1/18/76: Steelers win 21-17 over the Cowboys---Future Hall-of-Famer Roger Staubach almost pulled out another miracle comeback...Swann's great falling-to-the-ground acrobatic catch led to no points (!);

              --Super Bowl XIII, 1/21/79: Steelers win 35-31 over the Cowboys---the Cowboys' Jackie Smith drops a SURE TD pass that would have tied the game AND our go-ahead TD was aided by a very controversial tripping penalty that cost Dallas 33 yards: Lynn Swann fell over Benny Barnes's ankles and, as Bradshaw has admitted, it shouldn't have been a flag...we were ahead 35-17 at one point...Staubach almost brought them back (35-31);

              --GAME BEFORE SUPERBOWL XIV: AFC Championship game vs. the Oilers, 1/6/80: Steelers win 27-13---late in the third quarter, officials ruled that Oilers receiver Mike Renfro did not have possession of what appeared to be a game-tying TD (WRONG!!!! He was in bounds; bad, bad call)...and the rest is history...

              ---Super Bowl XIV, 1/20/80: Steelers win 31-19 over the Rams---Bradshaw threw 3 INTERCEPTIONS and we were losing for most of the game...until Lambert saved our butts by intercepting QB Vince Ferragamo's pass...and the rest is history
              (Steelers in the 1970's: regular season---99-44-1; playoffs: 14-4)

              NON-STEELER SUPER BOWL "LUCK"---
              Super Bowl XXV, 1/27/91: Giants defeat Bills BECAUSE SCOTT NORWOOD BARELY MISSES A RELATIVELY EASY FIELD GOAL, one of the biggest blown plays ever!;
              All 3 of the Patriots victories were by exactly 3 points...and the Eagles really blew it with poor clock management (sound familiar?)!;
              Super Bowl XXXIV, 1/30/00: Rams defeat Titans, 23-16--- The Rams' Mike Jones tackled Kevin Dyson at the 1-yard line as time expired. Dyson would have tied the game; Super Bowl V, 1/17/71: Colts beat Cowboys, 16-13, via a field goal... Dallas' Chuck Howley, who picked off two passes, became the first defensive player and the first player from a losing team to be named MVP.

              The Steelers have been in the Super Bowl in the 1970's. 1980's, 1990's, and in the new millennium (2000's)---
              IX (1975), X (1976), XIII (1979), XIV (played in 1980), XXX (played in 1996), XL (2006)

              Big Ben---ONLY QB to ever go to Championship game his first two years; youngest to win the Super Bowl (Steelers: first 6th seed to go/ win; only team to beat #1, #2, and #3 seeds on the road and win; three-way tie for most Super Bowl victories: 5, along with Dallas and San Francisco; tied for second with most Super Bowl appearances: 6, along with Denver [who have `only' won 2])...comparison to other Hall-of-Fame and/or outstanding QBs---
              Jim Kelly: 0 for 4; never won a Super Bowl;
              Fran Tarkenton: 0 for 4; never won a Super Bowl;
              Dan Marino: 0 for 1; never won a Super Bowl;
              Kenny Anderson: 0 for 1; never won a Super Bowl
              Len Dawson: won one Super Bowl (and lost one, as well);
              Johnny Unitas: won one Super Bowl (and lost one, as well);
              Joe Theismann: won one Super Bowl (and lost one, as well);
              Brett Favre: won one Super Bowl (and lost one, as well);
              Kurt Warner: won one Super Bowl (and lost one, as well);
              Ken Stabler: won one Super Bowl
              Joe Namath: won one Super Bowl;
              Phil Simms: won one Super Bowl;
              Steve Young: won one Super Bowl;
              Also: John Elway: after FIFTEEN YEARS IN THE LEAGUE, won two...after losing 3 very badly!

              BEST run in sports history (as confirmed by a Congressional resolution!): won 8 in a row---
              Bears (who had an 8-game winning streak), Vikings on the road (who had a 6 game winning streak...and Cowher NEVER won in a dome stadium before!), Browns on the road, and Detroit on 1/1/06 (where, unbeknownst to us at the time, we were headed for 2/5/06!); Bengals on the road (#3 seed, previously beat us), Colts on the road (#1 seed, league's best record, heavily favored, dome stadium, previously beat us; the Fumble, the Tackle, and the Miss), Broncos on the road (#2 seed, favored, 10-0 at home)...and the #1 NFC seeded Seahawks "on the road" in another dome, Detroit's Ford Field (where Big Ben started his NFL career vs. the Lions in the 2004 pre-season!!!)

              YOU HAVE TO GET THE TWO-DVD SET "STEELERS: THE COMPLETE HISTORY" (2005; NFL Films), 1933-2004 (too bad they didn't wait a year haha!)---the main feature is 2 hours and 20 minutes long and covers 1933 up to and including Beg Ben's 2004 season; incredible. All the `lean years' (1930's-1960's; 1980's) are covered, NOT just the "glory seasons"---Kordell, Brister, Malone, Stoudt, Hanratty, etc. etc. etc. The bonus feautures are awesome, ESPECIALLY the 45-minute Jerome Bettis special-VERY IRONIC!! You will see Tommy Maddox with the Bus when they were both Rams in 1995...excellent miked-on-the-field comments, often funny, by Bus, Ward, and Cowher...Jan. 2005 AFC lowlights, Hines Ward crying, Jerome's reaction, and the tantalizing hint that Super Bowl XL wil be played in Jerome's hometown of Detroit...which makes what they did in 2005/2006 VERY story book! Also: the Bill Cowher, Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, Rocky Bleier, Myron Cope, Dick Hoak, and Bill Saul segments/ specials are very entertaining, as is the Super Bowl XIII feature..get this...as well as the SUPER BOWL XL DVD---2005 season highlights included, as well as the 2006 playoffs!

The economic powerhouse of Italy since the Middle Ages, Milan is today a vibrant, frenetic city and Cadogan's discerning listings seek out the best bars, restaurants and clubs in which to party with the locals. But Lombardy has its gentle side too, and this guide reveals idylls along the shores of the famous Italian Lakes, such as the palms, lemon groves, and castles surrounding Lake Garda, and winds through the Renaissance cities of the Lombard plain. Admire the Gonzaga frescoes of Mantua and visit the refined art city of Bergamo, perched on a promontory on the edge of the Alps. The beauty of the area is illustrated in stunning color photographs, and full travel and practical information will make anyone's stay as dreamy as the scenery.

                Book Description

                The most glamorous region in Italy continues to be the country's most durable magnet for travelers. Cadogan's best-selling guide gets to grips with Milan, an international mecca of fashion and shopping that boasts awesome art collections and the world-famous La Scala opera house, and reveals idylls along the balmy shores of the famous Italian Lakes. After winding through the Renaissance cities of the Lombard plain, such as Cremona, where the world's first violin was made, the guide seeks out the spectacular 1000 foot waterfalls of Cascata della Frua, near the Alpine Ossola Valleys, home of winter sports. It also covers Lake Como, where olive groves and vineyards form the glorious backdrop to a thriving water-sports industry and waterfront restaurants. The highlights of the region are brought to life in a striking color photograph section, and comprehensive maps make navigation simple, whether driving along the autostrada or exploring a town on foot. The guide includes extensive, hand-picked listings of the best places to eat out and to sample the local vintages.

                I bought 4 books for our trip to the lake region and this was by far the most useful. Granted it does not include specific information about hours and costs for museums and sites, but we found that most of that information in the other books was out of date anyway. Use it with another guide if you need that. This book gives detailed background information on each area with history and culture, which gives you a great head start on your appreciation of the places you visit. We also found that it included some out-of-the-way places not in the other guides and really appreciated the personal opinons. Restaurants we tried on their recommendation were excellent, compared to the mixed results when we picked on our own. No guide is perfect, but this one comes very close, and the coming 5th edition may be even closer!

                3 out of 5 stars entertaining, but lacking detailed info.......2001-03-24

                Facaros and Pauls have provided a fun and entertaining guide but they often forget to include essential information to make the book practical. For example, we are told that above Orta San Giulio there are several fetching towns and attractions but we are not told how far they are or how to get there. Is a car required? Any public transportation? Is the sanctuary a pleasant 2 mile walk or a challenging 7 mile hike? Perhaps if you are making a return visit such details are not necessary, but for the first time visitor they are essential. Also, anyone planning to visit this area will most likely include both Mantua and Verona on their visit, but only Mantua is covered here. (Yes, Verona is not technically included in the 'Lombard Plain,' but can you imagine a guide to LA that didn't include Disneyland because technically it's in Anaheim, not LA?) You'll need another guide for Verona. If the authors issue a revised edition including Verona plus more detailed info, this will be an excellent guide. Mr Pauls, can we hope for this?

                        Book Description

                        "Almost forgot, Cherub, I got something yesterday to cheer you up. Found it in the tartan workshop...." He hands me the parcel, out of which comes a WHOLE SCOTTISH OUTFIT! Kilt, white shirt, frilly collar thing, tartan sash, red sporran, and, to top it all, thick green wooly knee-length socks with GARTERS!

                        Horrors! Potty is dragging Angel out of school early so the family can make their annual trek to Scotland. Worse than the dreary Scottish weather and embarrassing kilts, Mercedes is moving to Florida at the end of the term -- probably for good. Meanwhile, Potty is on the warpath, protesting that the haggis Harrods sells isn't authentic. It's just another of Potty's crazy schemes until the whole family is banned from the store -- and how can Angel cook without groceries? As if that weren't enough, Angel can't stop dreaming about Sydney...gross, disgusting Sydney. What is going on?

                        This hilarious follow-up to My Cup Runneth Over is filled with the same scrumptious fun--and more delectable recipes. Take a second helping of the madcap life of Angelica Cookson Potts!

                        5 out of 5 stars Hilarious Chick Lit for Teens.......2004-11-30

                        Potty has decided to drag dear, plus-sized, and overly-confident Angel out of school a week early, simply to drag her, Mother, and Flossie off to Scotland for their annual Easter vacation. However, what is simply worse than the dreary Scottish weather, and the men in kilts, is the fact that lovely Mercedes, one of Angel's very best friends in the entire world, is moving to Florida with her ultra-glammy parents, and she may not be coming back. If only that were the only thing Angel had to worry about, but no...there's more. Potty is now on the warpath, protesting the haggis that Harrod's sells, and now Angel's entire family has been banned from the posh store, which means no more ultra-chic undergarments, and fabbity-fab-fab groceries for the many treats Angel loves to whip up. If that weren't bad enough, Angel keeps dreaming about slimeball Sydney. BLECH!!

                        I never thought that Cherry Whytock would be able to top the first book of Angel's hilarious misadventures MY CUP RUNNETH OVER, but with MY SCRUMPTIOUS SCOTTISH DUMPLINGS, she has done just that. Angel is as sweet as pie, and couldn't be more thrilling to read about. While her wonderfully crazy parents are hilarious, and keep creating strange situations to keep the readers laughing out loud for hours. If you're looking for a hilarious teen literature book, you MUST read MY SCRUMPTIOUS SCOTTISH DUMPLINGS, as it cannot be missed.
