Book Description
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, organizations that fail to provide reasonable accommodations to employees with mental disabilities may be subject to penalties and punitive damages. The Act does not, however, provide useful guidelines to help organizations comply--a gap that Dr. Fielder's book now fills. This manual shows that compliance is not difficult or expensive. In clear, concise language, it acquaints management with mental diagnoses, impairments, disabilities, the myths of mental illness and its affect on job performance, and provides samples of workplace accommodations and compliance plans. Practical and readable, the book is intended for management of organizations with 15 or more employees, their human resource staffs and employee assistance professionals, and legal counsel.

Book Description
The history of federal regulation in the United States is such that fears in the human resource management community with regard to the Americans with Disabilities Act are hardly irrational. Especially disconcerting is the act's scope; and, to make matters worse, its provisions are often vague and even obscure. Writing from the viewpoint of human resource professionals, Veres, Sims, and their contributors look closely at some of the major issues raised by the act's passage, then forecast what other issues will be in the future. In doing so they provide practical advice on how to comply with the act in day-to-day situations and on crucial management topics. Veres, Sims, and their contributors examine the act's provisions and the ways in which it demands that managers scrutinize and reassess their essential functions. Compliance issues and how to avoid running afoul of the act's provisions are examined next, followed by a discussion of how the act applies to recruiting, testing, and employee selection. The performance appraisal process and how non-imparied employees will respond to accommodations required for their non-impaired colleagues is carefully laid out, and the interaction of the Equal Pay Act and the ADA is examined. Training needs in an ADA context and other problems are also treated, with special focus on ways in which employee discontent can be minimized as such problems are met and solved. A valuable guide and resource for human resource professionals and their academic colleagues.

Book Description
Reasonable accommodation is defined as any change in the work environment or in the way business is usually conducted that results in equal employment opportunity for an individual with a disability. With the Americans with Disabilities Act in full swing and more than 35,000 court cases on record, there is much to be done to get most companies into compliance. Reasonable Accommodation: Profitable Compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act was designed to provide those responsible for diversity and implementing the ADA with specific benchmark examples of how companies have provided accommodations that have had a positive impact on profitability, quality, employee and customer relations. This masterfully written book covers many important topics dealing directly with the ADA. It also provides numerous technologies available that can greatly increase productivity and quality of performance for disabled employees, as well as a "who's who" of case studies including: AT&T, Boeing, Federal Express, Ford Motor Co., Bank of America, Digital Equipment, General Electric Co., IBM, Motorola, WAUSAU Insurance Co., Sears Roebuck, Philip Morris, and many more.

From the author: Currently there are more than 43 million Americans that have one or more physical or mental disabilities accounting for nearly 17 percent of our population. The percentage of persons with disabilities continues to grow as a result of the aging "baby boom" generation that is now entering their 50's. The idea of legislation to protect the rights of the disabled was first introduced in 1988 and was then re-introduced in 1989. Finally, after much debate, President George Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990. The Act took effect in July, 1992. It bans discrimination against the "disabled" and requires businesses with 25 or more employees (from July 26,1994, with 15 or more) to provide "reasonable accommodations" for qualified disabled workers and job applicants. Penalties can reach $500,000 and the EEOC says 17,355 charges have been filed, but only five (5) EEOC-sponsored suits have been filed.[1] This paper attempts to point out the ADA does help, but not much. Congress intentionally left the definition of disability under ADA open-ended to ensure that as many people as possible are protected. ADA has generated action and confusion. Because of social legislation, Congress kept it vague and ambiguous. This has created problems. Although the employer is not required to lower quality or quantity standards, the employer must make a "reasonable accommodation". Reasonable accommodation might include providing or modifying equipment or training materials or policies, establishing part-time or modified work schedules, reassigning a disabled employee to a vacant position, providing readers and interpreters, and making the work environment readily accessible and usable by individuals with disabilities[2]. The problem seems to stem from the vague terms used in the law such as essential function", "reasonable accommodation, "readily achievable, etc. Employers are scared of the law and are holding tight until the terms of the law are defined in the courts. The courts must settle a number of test cases before employers will readily hire the persons with disabilities. Only then will we know if the law meets its goal of mainstreaming persons with disabilities.

Must Have.......2006-12-11
This book is as much about life as it is about baseball. The positive re-enforcement the book gives about accomplishing almost anything is the true message.
Whenever you or one of your players is struggling, go back to this book to refresh a slumping attitude.
What every serious Ball player should read.......2006-03-18
A great tool for coaches & players at all levels. If you don't understand the mental part of the game, this is the book for you.

let me think..............2005-02-19
Oh yea, that's right. There is no need to think when you're up at the plate. The main thing is to relax and trust your trained body motions/strengths. This book separates the men from the boys. It helps skilled athletes develop to their full potential. In fact, it can even change the way you live your life. Great book for those hot summer nights.
Superb book for just about anyone.......2004-05-06
I bought this book because I am a baseball fan and my sons play ball as well. I am also an experienced musician who played professionally for some years. I found the book to be a "must read" for ANY performer (athlete, musician, dancer, etc) and a great book for anyone seeking personal success in any pursuit. If you like The Inner Game of Music, or A Soprano On Her Head, you need to get this book.
Years of Application.......2002-11-15
I read this book as a freshman in college while playing intercollegiate baseball. I can honestly say that the things I learned and applied to my life as a ballplayer have stuck with me over the years. I have since gone on to a top-rated graduate school and a great job. I learned to formulate goals, think positively, and maintain focus and intensity though practicing what this book describes. If you like baseball, but don't play, this book is great as you apply it's principles as I have done over the years. If you do play, it will help you focus on getting the most out of your abilities.
Customer Reviews:
Great book that explores the big and small communities of MO.......1999-10-29
It took me a couple of years to read the book because I spread out the reading to enjoy my armchair travels. My compliments on the work. I can't imagine how all the information was gathered and checked. The author had to travel to each town. I looked up a couple of facts I consider to be little-known facts. They were included in the book, and were correct. I enjoyed reading about places near my weekend cabin. I checked out several of the features. The one I found most amazing was the grave of Comfort Ruggles -- a member of the Boston Tea Party buried in a Missouri country cemetery.
The book is great for the native Missourian and for those travelers who dream of discovering the Show Me State.
Excellent guide for travel, history, or trivia.......1998-05-14
Missouri Roadsides is a thorough compilation of almost every town in the state, from the small (Halltown, pop. 161) to the large (St. Louis, pop. 396,685). Based on courthouse records and eyeball observation, you'll find the history of each town, along with recreational areas, attractions, and fascinating tidbits. Armchair historians will like the emphasis on town origins. A special appendix on recreational areas is ideal for travellers, and includes wildlife areas, state parks, even navigable waterways. While the book would have been more complete with more maps and illustrations, Missouri Roadsides is a wealth of information -- and well worth the price!

shying at trouble.......2005-11-22
Carole is still obsessing over Samson, to the detriment of her grades, other stable work, and relationship with the Saddle Club. Lisa and she aren't speaking, ever since Lisa found out that Carole had been keeping the secret of Prancer's pregnancy from her. And A.J.'s still acting weird, so the club and their friends have set up a confrontation. I agree with the other reviewers that it was a little too rough, though perhaps necessary.
I love pine hollow!.......2000-10-06
This Pine Hollow book is one of the best. I havn't read any further than this because I can't find any more, but I'm going to order them soon. The AJ thing was getting so frusterating, I was glad to find out the truth. I found it a bit surprising when Veronica draged the truth out of him, and as for the way she hangs on to scott - GAG! I know some people feel the same way about Alex and Lisa, but I know people like that in real life so... Carole's obsession with Samson is screaming trouble, she's forgotten all about Starlight. I think Ben should say something too her about it. and as for stevie's brothers giving her a hard time about teasing Michal, he deserves it!
This book was cool,but..........2000-01-18
This was a good book.I like it.Except A.J's reaction is a little unrealistic. They must have adopted him when he was really young. At least young enough to not remember a thing about his real parents. Also, why did he need to see his sister's birth certificate. She's like 5,he's 16.Wouldn't he remember when she was born?Oh well.I think his parents should have told him when he was younger. He probably would have found out someday anyway.Wouldn't he have.I think the pull-it-out-of-A.J.-confrontation was a little rough.First if all, there were to many people there, they should only his closest friends. Not every person he knew within a hundred miles. And why was A.J. so suprised when everybody thought he was on dope. The stupid way he was acting, anyone could have thought that.I think they should've had so many people,I also think that they kind of pried it out of him. They can be curious about his problem, but at the same time, they need to respect his privacy. They were so pushy with him, they almost made the poor guy shed tears. For a 16 year old guy, that's really embarassing in front of all friends.Oh well.I'm the kind of person who picks over EVERY bad thing in a book.Even when the book is good. There always seems to be something bad to point out. This book isn't as bad as I make it sound. It's actually a really good book.I would recommend reading. It's money well spent.Bonnie Bryant is a wonderful author.Read all her books.
P.S. How could they not think he could be a druggie. In future books he becomes a drunk anyway. That doesn't exactly comfort everyone's suspicions for this.A.J. has a problem. He can't even learn anything from one mistake.Books 7 and 9 seem to display his character pretty bad.Starting a beer bash to bringing Vodka to dinner to fake ID's to drinking in a college bar,A.J. seems to have done it all.He needs help. He's a pretty weak creature.Short, skinny, and a wimp to peer pressure.Hmmm.He could use a gym and a revival.
Awesome Book.......1999-08-06
Hey, I agree sort of with everyones doubt. Lisa and Alex??? isn't Lisa a year older anyway? whys she dating someone out-of-her-league. anyway, i really really liked this book too. but it kinda bothers me about callie. i cant adjust to her being in the book. it just doesnt work for me. i know life changes and stuff. but bringing someone else in the book kinda bored me. shes not that fun. shes always at the same thing, her disabled side of it. it's really sad about emily! she was really cool. i ordered Penalty Points 2 days ago and im so anxious to read it!! I like scott a lot too, and the Veronica thing is funny. its about time she realizes that shes just not wanted around the barn!! thanks! ~Devon1415~
As If!.......1999-07-30
Lisa with a boyfriend? It just doesn't fit. In this book, they were so lovey-dovey it was sickening! Lisa doesn't even have time to ride HORSES let alone go out with a boyfriend. Bonnie Bryant, this was a big mistake! Lisa is way to academic to have a boyfriend.
