Gate Gable's techniques provide detailed guidance into planning processes, strategic skills, recognition of challenges, consideration of goals, monitoring and measurement, and implementation tips to help the reader begin the planning process almost immediately. Written in three parts, the author provides exercises with each chapter. Part one covers the pre-planning stages, defining who and what your team is and what your teams' goals are. The second part goes over the actual planning, identifying the challenges and setting the goals for your team. Book Description
This book is a tribute to Gianfranco Capriz on the occasion of his seventy-fifth birthday. This book collects about twenty research papers written by world-leading scientists in the field of continuum thermomechanics. The authors discuss a number of different theories, classical and new. Moreover, general underlying themes are both the exploration of the limits of the continuum approach (as it was consolidated between the late '50s and the early '70s) and the study of those amendments and extensions that would hopefully allow to treat mathematically a host of real-life problems that have been proposed, but not yet adequately modelled, within materials science, structural optimisation, biosciences, medical engineering, superconductivity, etc. The reader will find displayed the recent progresses in modelling non-standard material structures.

You'll never run out of ways to use Swiss (also called stability) balls and medicine balls with this book, which describes and illustrates 69 exercises that can be done with one (or sometimes both) of these balls. Swiss and medicine balls are popular among athletes for conditioning, strength, flexibility, and balance. They provide an unstable platform, challenging balance and core stabilization and helping athletes train for unpredictable situations. You'll progress from basic exercises, like pushups with the feet on the Swiss ball and crunches lying on the ball, to challenges like kneeling on the ball unassisted for three minutes and the one-legged jackknife. Each exercise is described in three stages--setup, movement, and finish--and many also include advanced variations. Illustrations--usually two per exercise--are clear and large, and the book opens flat, so you can do the exercises with the book beside you on the floor. Special training recommendations for football, skiing, tennis, soccer, golf, judo, hockey, baseball, figure skating, volleyball, and basketball are included. Both authors are strength/conditioning coaches, lecturers, and consultants. This book is highly recommended for the serious exerciser, athlete, or trainer looking for innovative ways to use Swiss and/or medicine balls. --Joan Price
Book Description
Develop strength, power, coordination, balance, and core stability using the medicine ball and stability ball exercises included in Strength Ball Training. Preferred by elite athletes, fitness experts, and strength and conditioning specialists, these exercises train the body as a linked system rather than targeting muscles in isolation.
Exercises start with the core, where most movements are initiated, and then move out to the periphery, combining strength and balance in all the major muscle groups and the supporting muscles. And the enclosed companion DVD shows you how to perform the most complex and advanced exercises.
Strength Ball Training also includes a sample 16-week program with an excellent array of strength, flexibility, and balance challenges that may also be customized to design your own strength ball program.
Customer Reviews:
Thorough and complete.......2007-09-04
I was impressed with the set up of the content. It's well written with detailed explanations for each exercise. I use it a lot in my own personal training. Those days when I don't feel like hitting the gym, I just stay home and practice some of the advance exercises. I can still get a good workout off it. Great book.
An Intermediate to Advanced Book for Physioballs.......2007-07-02
This is a great addition to any personal trainer and group fitness instructor's library. Some might complain that it takes a partner to do some of the exercises, but from a training stand point you WANT your clients to NEED you--just think for a second, if your clients didn't have to do partner exercises, then why would they hire you? Besides, even if you go to they gym regularly and you know your way around the weightroom, I would suggest getting yourself a workout buddy to help with motivation and program adherence.
For the beginner, I would not recommend this book because most of the exercises are pretty challenging. I thought I knew every possible exercise on the physioball after going to Core Workshops in New York, but if you get this book I promise you will spend your money wisely.
If you don't have a gym, then spend the money to get a medicine ball and a physioball, an investment of about $100, and you're well ahead of the game when it comes to fitness. It's also a great book for any of you functional training and sports performance junkies out there, you could definately use some of these with your athletes.
The DVD is an excellent addition to an otherwise packed-out book of stabilization knowledge. The book doesn't tell you what poundage (or Kg) because the author assumes that you are smart enough to know your limits about what you can chuck around.
New Exercises for a Stability Ball.......2007-04-09
This is one of the most comprehensive guides to training with a strength ball. Fitness enthusiasts will enjoy the workouts included in this book.
Great book, but how about a new edition?.......2007-02-27
I start all of reviews with 5 stars and then take away stars with something that I don't like.
I think this book is a great book. It's a very comprehensive book showing you all of the different exercises available with a stability ball and even some exercises that I didn't know could be performed with a stability ball. Very well put together.
I do have two complaints though. 1) You have to have a partner for several of the exercises listed. I'm not taking away a star for that though, because other people did have it in their reviews and somehow I just skimmed over that part. 2) There's not really a good workout regiment in the book. They give you all of these exercises and then don't really culminate them well. Yes, there are a few "workouts" in the back of the book, but they only seem enough to whet your appetite. I am horrible about coming up with my own workout plan. I guess I'm just not creative enough. Seems like something they could add in a revised edition.
All in all a good book though.
"Strength Ball Training" by Goldenberg, Twist most comprehensive on subject.......2007-01-29
I'm not a PhD on the subject, but as a lifelong "fitness enthusiast" (read: two points shy of OCD) I've seen dozens of books on diet and exercise and have managed, through judicious culling of available material, to distill a program out of it all that has eased considerably my transition from extended adolescence into midlife crisis.
Lately haven given up running and 80% of my weightlifting activity in favor of dance class, hiking/hill sprinting and bodyweight circuits, the stability ball is the single most important piece of gear I use. The core conditioning I've learned in the course of various rehab cycles relies on it, and having revamped my program based on the ball and related movements I'm always looking for new information about it.
This book is the most comprehensive out of half a dozen or so I've seen on the subject. It contains sections on each body part and a full range of medicine ball movements for explosive conditioning. If I would have known 30 years ago what I know now, I'd have been ten times better off using the programs in this book than the folklore-laden, body builder-based training I was using.
If you want to build the type of conditioning that will not only make you a better athlete but give you survivability throughout your life, this book would be an excellent place to start.

Customer Reviews:
preachy tone, too wordy.......2007-09-28
The tone of this book is so preachy and condescending that I can't seem to get to the exercises themselves. Each chapter begins with a several-page story about a person whose life was turned around their work with the author on Pilates. Then there are several long pages of essays, with lots of quotations and name-dropping and helpful self-improvement tips like "every day you will need to restart" and "one becomes old when fixities of habits are established."
I am sure that there are subtleties about the approach that need to be conveyed. However, I would prefer to use a book with a more direct writing style so I can get the information I need quickly and get on with my workout.
Waste of my money...unhelpful book.......2006-08-26
This book is not great. There is a lot of useless fluff at the beginning of each chapter, when the author tells a long, very boring story (ie: an October day on a train) that is not conducive to building core strength. The pictures are in black & white, and there are not as many great exercises compared to other books. With this book, you'll probably spend all your time reading rather than doing exercises. This book is not direct or to the point, resulting in many pages that again, you'll have to read to find maybe one key point.

Colleen is Amazing.......2006-03-09
I own all of Colleen's books and they just keep getting better and better. I ride horses and I was looking for a workout that would inprove my balance and help me to be more aware of what my body was doing. The best part of working out on a ball is that if you make a mistake the ball moves so you KNOW that you are doing something wrong! I recommend this book for eveyone!
A superb strength training book for everybody.......2005-06-03
This is Colleen's third "on the ball" book, and it just keeps getting better. When one hears the words "strength training", the words usually implied are "for atheletes". Colleen certainly covers challenging exercises, but she also includes chapters for rehabilitation, seniors, and one for children. What a delight! Besides the Swiss Ball, Colleen also uses stretch bands, small hand weights, and the small dynaball in the routines. The exercises using the swiss ball and dynaball simultaneously are quite challenging; they allow one to extend the concept of "core stability" to the deep muscle lines in our arms and legs.
One particularly striking exercise: on p. 124, Colleen is doing a one-armed rowing motion while prone on the Swiss Ball. The non-rowing arm is balancing by holding onto a dynaball. Study that left arm! The dynaball completely alters the quality of the exercise; it makes the one-arm exercise supremely challenging for the entire upper body and both arms. Colleen herself is the model for these hand-weight exercises; the lines of her body simultaneously demonstrate fantastic strength and amazing relaxation/suppleness in her superficial muscle lines.
When Colleen's "Pilates on the Ball" first came out, there were virtually no titles of "ball" exercises. Now, there are literally dozens of titles. The bad news for those other authors: Colleen is the definitive expert in this field, and she continues her path of innovation with this book.
If you want to improve your strength, get this book. If you want to improve your flexibility or rehab from an injury, get this book. If you have children or parents who want to maintain/improve their strength/flexibility/fun, get this book. The Swiss Ball is no passing fad, and this book will show why.

Must have for basketball strength training.......2005-04-26
This is an excellent book for strength training. The book gives you a 12 month program that lays out the exercises and amount of weight to use every day. The amount of weight is determined by testing that is part of the program. The program is 4 different phases..offseason 1, offseason 2, pre-season, and season. My high school age son has been using the program from the book for only 5 weeks and I can already see the results.

Book Description
Chiang Mai has long been a center of a lowland Northern Thai culture that is as distinct from the ethnic traditions in the hills as it is from the Mon-Khmer heritage of Bangkok and the central Siamese Thai. Located at the foot of a sacred mountain at the heart of a culture based on wet-rice cultivation, Chiang Mai was the capital of a kingdom called Lan Na that rivalled Ayutthaya, the Siamese precursor to Bangkok, for 200 years. However, with an inland location unable to take advantage of maritime trade, and with a cultivable land area too small to support the manpower required for large armies, Lan Na was to disappear in the struggle between Burma and Siam, and was ultimately eclipsed by the rise of Bangkok as the metropolitan heart of the Kingdom of Thailand. Chiang Mai, however, was to remain the center of Northern Thai culture.
With the expertise of a resident, Oliver Hargreave first presents Chiang Mai as a historical city with traditions that have evolved into a thriving modern culture. Then he takes the city as a starting point for journeys into the picturesque landscape of the surrounding valley and mountains.
This is the first international edition of this guidebook, first published in Thailand in 1997, and revised as a second edition in 1998.
First international edition of this popular guidebook to Thailand's northern capital Written by an expatriate resident fluent in Thai Text divided into sections that inform when read at leisure and can easily be used while travelling Numerous sidebars cover many aspects of history and culture Exceptionally strong guidebook for use on the road and to keep on the bookshelf Unique collection of more than 250 color photographs with informative captions 29 maps
Customer Reviews:
Well worth the money: cover price $17.95.......2006-10-21
It's a shame that there are no newer editions out but this sturdily bound and nicely sized book seems to hold up against information I have found on various websites. Written by a long term resident of Chiang Mai, it is useful for a short visit or a long stay. There is a newer edition coming out next year. However, you should be able to get an edition from the author if you google for his email address. This books make the internet information search much much more comprehensible as does Nancy Chandler's map. I recommend both products as worth buying and genuinely useful.
Exploring Chiangmai: Northern Thailand's Historical and cult.......2004-04-04
The best guide book about Chaingmai
Excellent and Accurate.......2003-09-07
As as resident of Chiang Mai, I have found this book to be the most accurate and interesting guide book on Chiang Mai currently in print. Unlike many other guide books, it is just as relevant for a long-term resident or frequent visitor as it is for a short-term tourist. It is a great book.

Book Description
The adventures of a black tenant-farming family continue in this sequel to Down in the Piney Woods. Spending the summer on her great-grandmother Moriah's farm seems like a life in paradise to Annie Rye. Until, suddenly, she finds herself facing deep-seated prejudice and subject to unspoken rules when the lonely granddaughter of the wealthy white landowner offers Annie Rye friendship. Smothers's sometimes hilarious, often moving portrait of independent Annie Rye and her family brings to life rural Georgia before the civil-rights movement and resonates with a universal message of understanding and forgiveness.
