Celebrating Diversity is GREAT resource for teachers, diversity trainers, or staff developers who are looking for thoughtful and thought-provoking experiential exercises. As a teacher I have used it with my undergraduates, letting them choose and implement the exercise in class. (Their favorite was "Sexist Language"--a real eye-opener for them!!) As a faculty developer, I share it with our diversity office staff and with faculty on our predominately white-middle-class-Protestant-heterosexual-able-bodied campus who wish to explode some of the myths and stereotypes about Others. Using "Celebrating Diversity" in 8th grade language arts.......1999-01-12

I am an 8th grade language arts teacher in a rural Iowa school district that has a student population comprised of nearly 40% language and cultural minority students, mostly new or recent immigrants from Mexico and from several Central American countries. I found that several of Dr. Hetherington's exercises, such as "Circle Dance" and "Bashing, Bashing," helped both my Anglo and my minority 8th graders better understand the reluctance of most of the minority students to participate in class discussions and in small group activities. Through the exercises, my students acquired a better understanding of how very dissimilar are the American and the Mexican/Central American teaching styles and classroom environments. The mutually improved understanding enabled my Latino students to break out of their conventional patterns of relating to students and to the teacher, and enabled my Anglo students to exhibit more patience with and encouragement of their minority classmates.

For anyone interested in the Pacific Rim, and in comparative history, this book provides a fascinating introduction to the beginnings of an environmental consciousness in the West and in Australia. Centred on plants and water, Tyrrell provides a convincing number of examples of shared problems between California and Australia; he also highlights the vexed issues of introduced species, and the aesthetic ideologies which accompany the use of "exotic" plants.
It is solid history, but also fun to read.

Many not that familiar with Arizona do not know that it is much more diverse than just desert. it is also forests and alpine mountains full of trees and flowers equal to any western state.

like the other two volumes in this series, christine maxa provides extensive detail about what flowers you will see on a good selection of hikes. in fact, she tells you step by step as you go along the trail what specific flowers you will see and exactly where to look. 75% of the pictures are small flower closeups rather than panoramic pictures of flowers in the larger context of a scenic wildplace (a mild disappointment). the guide also has simple directional hiking maps and trail following notes, detail about elevation, the best season, directions to the trailhead, etc. the overall production quality of this Westcliffe published book is very high, with use of high photo grade paperstock and added graphic design work that makes this guide very colorful.

This could be a good book just needs more information, on how to do the yoga pose and more on warm up, cool down, and their is a lot more that could have been add to the book.

This book was a big disappointment to me as it provided very little information on how to actually do the recommended exercises. For a book of less than 200 pages, it has almost 1/3 dedicated to discussion of general yoga topics. It has a Preface, Acknowledgements, an Introduction, Theories of Yoga, Traditional Yoga vs. Yoga for Golfers - we haven't gotten to any actual instruction yet. A better choice for golfers looking for more flexibility and comfort would be Roger Fredericks DVD series.

This book was not what I expected it to be. The photographs are small and in black and white.

Golfers, save your money! Take a good Yoga class and learn the stretches on your own. Then take a few golf lessons, just for fun!

Excellent Instructional Book.......2007-01-10

I think this book is essential to read for any serious golfer over age 30, regardless of handicap and especially for those who want to improve their game and their fitness to play the game without serious injury. I consider it one of the best sports and fitness books I've ever read with a lot of excellent information, useful exercises, and a very easy-to-read style. More than 30 years ago I was a serious yoga practitioner. Then I changed from yoga to weight training. Ten years later I stopped playing golf due to a serious back problem. At that time I had been playing golf for more than 20 years and still enjoyed playing. I was playing to a 17 handicap at that time. Finally, after nearly 20 years of dedicated fitness training and several lengthy periods of physical therapy, I've resumed playing golf and am loving it. Since returning to the links, I've taken group and individual golf lessons and attended a 3-day short game school, all of which have helped me re-acquaint myself with the fundamentals and finer points of golf. This book has help me immeasurably already too. Many of the exercises in this book are based on the yoga techniques I've continued to use over the years. Those that I had forgotten or stopped doing have already helped me improve the fluidity and mechanics of my swing, relax during play, and to improve my strength, flexibility, and mental approach. Although I haven't played enough since returning to golf to establish my current handicap, I highly recommend this book. I don't know what it will do for your handicap, although I think it will help you reduce it, but, I'm confident it will benefit your enjoyment of the game and your overall fitness.

I used the yoga positions in the book to help me increase my flexibility and relax my mind. Does yoga increase flexibility? That's a definite. The writing in the book is well-done and is simple to follow.....

When I go to play golf I'm definitely more relaxed and more focused because of what I learned and practiced from this book.

Excellent! We bought this book to take a tour of the blues through Missippi. We followed many of the suggested spots and even met some of the people mentioned in the book. Use it as the definitive tour guide to the blues.

Lots of Great information..........2007-03-23

Some of the directions could have been better, like Robert Johnson's grave site. It wasn't really clear how to get to downtown Greenwood, MS, but we eventually got there!
Lots of good information. Stumbled upon MS John Hurt's grave while trying to find Robert Johnsons, so that was a plus.
All blues lovers and enthusiasts should get this book before your journey. Lots of good information about the area, and details about the musicians you want to know more about!

I highly recommend this book for anybody considering a Blues trip into the Delta. It is the best available resource on the market. Looking at its competitors, they all miss the mark due to either outdated, incomplete, or just plain incorrect information.

I have just completed a Delta blues trip and read the book after I returned. Having actually done such a trip provides a very authoritative vantage point from which to judge any such work.

Our trip was preceded by 6 months of online research into every aspect of the Delta and surrounding areas. Over 100 pages of information were accumulated prior to departure. The trip itself covered nearly a 1400 mile loop by car that began and ended in New Orleans. So many of the stops we made along the way ~ Jackson, Ms.; Greenwood, Ms.; Clarksdale, Ms.; Helena, Ark.; Memphis, Tenn.; all the historic gravesites; the prisons and the plantations were all covered in Steve's book. He certainly did his homework. (For goodness sake, he moved there as part of the overall immersion process, LOL!)

We met Steve in Helena while he was lecturing and playing at the `Blues on Main Street' exhibit opening at the Delta Cultural Center on Cherry St. He is proficient at both. It was there we bought the book that got carried home and subsequently read after the fact.

If you don't have 6 months to do your own research, just buy his book and read it in a week. He covers everything. Then take it with you and use it as a guide on the road.

(p.s. Plan your trip so it somehow involves the WC Handy awards in Memphis in late April, as well as the Beale Street Music Festival that follows that weekend).

A big let-down...........2005-09-24

I saw practically all of the series on E4 and thought it was absolutely fantastic, if a bit weird. Olivia Hallinan is a fantastic actress. Then I learned it was based on a book, so I got it out the library. I was amazed at how un-like the tv show it was.
I was expecting a lot more to happen in it. The tv show is apparantly very loosely based on the book, and personally, I think that's a good thing, because the book was pretty crap.
Kim has to move to a new school, and when she arrives, bumps into Maria Sweet a.k.a. Sugar, the leader of the girls in the school. They immediately become staunch friends, and Kim finds herself falling in love with her. There are a few lesbian antics in it, but hardly anything compared to the series. You can decide whether that's good or bad, I'll leave that up to you. But as for a storyline, I couldn't really find one.
The book isn't all bad, there are some mildly amusing bits, but generally it disappoints.

A fairly good book..........2005-09-20

This was a refreshing look at teen sexuality in that the angsting over being attracted to a girl was kept to a minimum, and the focus was instead on the particular girl - Sugar, aka Maria Sweet, the beautiful party girl who befriends the narrator, Kim, when she transfers to a new school. The style is realistically teenagerish and although drugs and sex play a part, graphic details are kept to a minimum. However, it gets tiresome after a bit - especially with the use of various nicknames - and the ending comes out of the blue and makes little sense. Worth reading in the context of the lesbian YA fiction genre but hardly spectacular enough to recommend to a general audience.

although it has 'claimed' to be one of those forward thinking books on lesbian teenagers, it is a terrible, terrible book. i study teen lit. specialising in books about emerging female queerness, and i think of this as an example of one of the worst. it is poorly written, clearly voiced by a frustrated adult, who often lapses out of a teenage voice to that of a bitter adult, full of purple prose and attempts to be edgy and just comes off as seeming to be trying too hard.

I absolutely enjoyed reading this lovella. It opened my eyes to world of love. It showed me that even though people may do you wrong in the world of love, there is still that one special person waiting to find you.Darlene "Dolly" Hunter was a perfect example of a woman who had been wronged in the world of love and closed her heart to others until Gerald "Blacksax" Washington came into her life.The book took me into the minds of the characters by making me feel as if I were actually in the book watching as the book unfolded before me. Nothing says love like having your love scars healed by that special person. As soon as I purchased the book, I immediately began to read it. As I started to read, I became hooked like a fish on a hook, with no intention of letting go. I wanted to see what laid on the surface of the world, and this book enabled me to do so. This book was filled with surprises.Every page became a window to a new world for me to explore. After the first few pages, I realized that I just couldn't put it down. I finished the book within two and a half days. The book left me wanting more. I would recommend this book to every person who has been wronged and hurt during their journey in the world of love, and know that the right person is out there waiting for you.

Sugar Rush is a great book It helps you understand the meaning of love, Friendship, and your career, It alos give you hope to love and trust again if you have ever lost it in someone you cared about.This book also focous on the meaning of family.

I name my topic dreams cause I always dream and I feel as though my dream are never coming through no matter how I try, but after taking the rush I realise I haave to take risk, I have to not just believe but step out and make sacrifices. A Spiritual, Tender Love Story.......2006-03-08

I am a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. I recently had surgery on my eye and was unable to read. When I was able to see again, I read Sugar Rush: Love's Liberation and finished in 3 to 4 days.

Sugar Rush: Love's Liberation was one of the most delightful books I have ever read. It is spiritual and insightful. There was such a tenderness about it. It was a love story, but there wasn't a lot of sex in it. It was like courting back in my day. I hated for the book to end and felt like I knew the characters. I felt like I was there. when I got to the end, I didn't know what to do. Yolonda is a great writer.

A Must Read! Over and Over..........2006-02-23

I read this book as soon as I could. It is a complete page turner. It kept me on edge all the way down to the last page. Here I am 4 months later and I am reading the book for a 2nd time. This is one book that will never go out of season.
