For those who encounter unusual financial terms and need a quick understanding of them, buy this book. The book is especially useful when the authors go beyond simple definitions to get at the underlying concepts and cross reference a term to other related terms. For US readers, please don't be put off by the "international" in the title. This book will be useful to those who work in the US market exclusively.

The true food of all good Democrats.......2006-09-26

Any book about hot dogs which ignores jalapeno peppers, ketchup, mayonaise and the Democrats has missed the essentially American flavour of this food.

Maybe Graulich is a Republican and doesn't know better. They're used to eating pointy little sandwiches with the crusts cut off and stuffed with unmentionable fillings, while daintily sipping tiny cups of tea flavoured lightly with lemon. Good Democrats chow down on franks with beans washed down with keg beer; to go upscale they put their dogs in a bun, dress them with local flavours ranging from peanut butter to mayonnaise, chopped onions and jalapenos and quaff beer from a bottle.

In short, hot dogs are pure Americana. They should be served in as many ways, as many places, as many flavours and to as many Americans as possible. When Tommy Jeff wrote about "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness . . ." it is safe to assume, had hot dogs existed then, he would have understood the meaning of happiness. Graulich wants to prove dogs deserve culinary status, which is like entering Hagar the Horrible in a Miss America pageant. It's a quirky challenge, and he does it with elegance, style and good taste. But really, do hot dogs have "good taste" or do they just have to taste good?

Personally, I'd prefer some recipes; let's say for Chicago, New York and Mexican hot dogs. But, that may merely show I'm a cretin. Let's be honest, a hot dog is not an effete French (or Italian, or Portuguese or whatever) dish that must be prepared by an effete chef to the effete taste of a effete snob and served in an efficacious artistic display. Instead, like pizzas, hamburgers and baking powder biscuits with cowboy coffee, the hot dog is pure American inventiveness that gives everyone a taste exactly to their liking. Kinda like voting.

Graulich succeeds admirably. The book is done with taste, style and beauty; the work of a true connoisseur. Can anyone expect more of a hot dog, or a book about hot dogs? It's so good even effete snobs may be encouraged to nibble. Fortunately, for the sake of Republicans, he even includes instructions on how to eat a hot dog.

BUT . . . . . . . I still think someone needs to talk to him about jalapenos.

pinks doesnt deserve to be on any list .......2005-02-09

pinks is THE most overrated place on earth. I drove 2 hours for that? bland hard skinned hot dogs with cheap wanna be chili on it. a 7/11 big bite is better. dont waste your time. read this book its honest.

Overlooked Pinks?.......2000-01-09

Overall Mr. Graulich didn't do a bad job putting together a fairly informative book about one of my favorite foods.

On the other hand, when he listed the hot dog stand locations, he included the Purple Turtle in Utah (I live only a few minutes from the Turtle and it is only a marginal dog) but failed to mention Pink's in Los Angeles.

You don't think about Saturn without rings, you don't think about Abbott without Costello. You don't talk about Bill without Monica. You don't discuss hamburgers without MacDonalds (Although I didn't read Graulich's book, 'The Hamburger Companion' maybe he did.) You don't write about the American Civil War and leave out Lee or Grant or Lincoln.

How in the world could a man write about hot dogs and not include Pink's in Los Angeles. They recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. Same spot, same great dogs. My grandfather ate there, my dad ate there, I eat there. They used to be open 24 hrs. And no matter what time of the day or night you went there was almost always a line. Their hours have changed slightly, but there's still always a line.

Shame on you Mr Graulich, I am having a hard time to resist the urge to use the pages of your book to line the bottom my bird cage.

You don't think of Lucy without Ethel, or Fred without Ginger, or Disney without Mickey . . .Hot dogs without Pink's? Never.

A well-written tribute to America's fun food.......1999-07-15

This lavishly illustrated volume is a thoughtful and fun tribute to America's fun food--the hot dog. It's a perfect coffee table--make that picnic table--volume for food lovers of all stripes. If the pictures don't get your mouth watering and your grill smoking, the author's description of famous hot dog joints around the country will. It's hard not to smile reading this beautiful little book.

Finding Solace In The Emptiness Of A Magical Landscape.......2003-12-18

I was browsing the book collection in Zion National Park's gift shop one morning when A Vast and Ancient Wilderness caught my eye several aisles from where I stood. The exquisite photograph on the cover of the book beckoned me like a magnet might draw a bit of metal to it. I had just the day before traversed all three hundred plus miles of central Nevada via "the loneliest road in America," state route 50, and was thus newly acquainted with the seductive beauty of basin and range topography. Although my guide book had warned that the drive might seem endlessly monotonous to some, I had the sense that the desolation and emptiness to be encountered would provide a landscape of light, texture and color I would relish. I was correct in this assessment beyond my wildest imagining! Traveling in late November, I was consistently astonished by the beauty of the terrain as subtly variegated Earth tones of black, brown, dark green, ocher and gray accented by the pure white of snow-capped mountains passed before me hour after hour throughout the day. Reminiscent of a series of Rothko paintings seen in ever-changing light, the sun at first highlighted the inherent colors of the land and then rendered them in increasingly intense shades of yellow and red once day evanesced into night. Claude Fiddler's portfolio of images of the Great Basin (as it stretches beyond Nevada into Oregon, Utah and California) represents this remarkable corner of our planet righteously. As John Hart notes in his introduction to Fiddler's work, these "photographs find the textures and the colors where the unpracticed eye might register only vacancy. Spend some time with images like these, and you will never look at emptiness in quite the same way again." In addition to the often sumptuous photography of a rich and varied emptiness, a lively essay by Steve Roper discusses early exploration by miners and trappers of this inhospitable desert to interesting effect.

Full of useful tips and tricks.......2006-03-15

I'd sincerely recommend this book to very beginners and... yes, to sensei.
The most valuable point of the book is that instead of usual plain listing of the standard techniques of this or that style, it concentrates on the basic principles - "how, why, and when it works", thus offering basic building blocks, and lots of unique tips and tricks. The principles are beyond the style differences, and thus applicable to everyone.
For sensei it contains many tips of how to handle difficulties of beginners.

Great Learning And Teaching Resource.......2005-12-29

Lots and lots of exercises and other really helpful information related to Aikido not only on the mat but also for daily life. This book is a great resource, not only now but also for future reference.

Not a Guide book.......2001-01-07

This book, while useful, is not a guidebook to Asia. Rather, it is a place to begin to explore before planning any trip. I found it useful when I planned my first bacpacking trip in Asia. Some useful tips on overseas travel, particularly in developing countries, and dealing with different cultures. This is a good place to start if you are considering backpacking abroad.

Rick Steve's out of date guidebook for Asia.......2000-03-27

Similar to Europe through the Back Door, this is Rick's attempt for Asia. The book gives general advice for those who want to backpack through Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Japan, etc... The advice is very similar to those found in Rick's other books: wear a money belt, mix with the locals, don't expect 5 star cleanliness in a cheap hotel etc... The book is not bad, but it's main flaw is that it is dated material. I do like/trust Rick's opinions so I use it, along with other guidebooks, for travel ideas through Asia.

A great Nintendo book for all you Luigi fans.......1998-05-24

In this book Bowser Koopa kidnaps Luigi to ask him for help. Wendy O. Koopa is missing and Bowser wants Luigi to find her. Luigi agrees to help him out. From this point the reader gets to make most of the decisions, puzzles occasionally help you out. With so many different possibilities, this book is great to read over and over.
