Book Description
Almost half of all life on earth may exist in the world's forest canopies. They may also play a vital role in maintaining the planet's climate, yet they remain largely unexplored owing to difficulties of access. They are renowned for their great diversity and role in forest functioning, yet there are still great gaps in the understanding of this `last biological frontier'. This seminal book shows how canopy science is now in a position to answer many of the outstanding questions, among which are some of the most pressing environmental issues society is presently facing. It represents a major summary of the current understanding of canopy ecology, and maps a path forward into a greater understanding of tropical forest ecology and management at a time when the very future of this ecosystem is threatened by humanity's actions.

Book Description
An understanding of the characteristics and the ecology of soils, particularly those of forest ecosystems in the humid tropics, is central to the development of sustainable forest management systems. The present book examines the contribution that forest soil science and forest ecology can make to sustainable land use in the humid tropics. Four main issues are addressed: characteristics and classification of forest soils, chemical and hydrological changes after forest utilization, soil fertility management in forest plantations and agroforestry systems as well as ecosystem studies from the dipterocarp forest region of Southeast Asia. Additionally, case studies include work from Guyana, Costa Rica, the Philippines, Malaysia, Australia and Nigeria.

Description:
Patterns in above- and belowground allocation of biomass and net primary production (NPP) along a topographic and soil N availability gradient were measured in a cool-temperate deciduous forest in central Japan. In this study site, soil N availability changed along the topographic sequence and decreased up the slope. Total NPP ranged from 8.8 to 14.1tha^-^1 and showed no trends along the topographic sequence, while the percentage of belowground NPP to total NPP ranged from 15.2 to 55.1% and increased up the slope. The aboveground NPP ranged from 5.6 to 8.6tha^-^1 and decreased up the slope. Belowground NPP ranged from 1.5 to 7.7tha^-^1 and increased up the slope. Fine root production contributed to this trend. Allocation to structural components in the lower slope exceeded that on upper slope positions, whereas higher allocation to fine roots on the upper slope may result in higher annual belowground litterfall. Our results suggest that differences in the carbon allocation pattern of plants between structural and litter components may be a driving force to create variations in forest structure and nutrient cycling along the topographic sequence.

Description:
The genetic variation in shoot growth, water-use efficiency (as assessed by @d^1^3C) and gum production was compared among eight Acacia senegal provenances originating from contrasting conditions of the gum arabic belt in central Sudan. The experimental site was in the clay plain region. Carbon isotope ratios were obtained from leaves and branch wood samples of the dissimilar A. senegal provenances. The clay provenances were distinctly superior to the sand provenances in all traits studied but especially in basal diameter and crown width, reflecting their adaptation to the environment. Values of @d^1^3C were less negative in the sand group compared to the clay both in leaves and in branch wood. This suggests that sand provenances displayed conservative water use and high drought tolerance. Of the clay provenances, the local one displayed a high negative @d^1^3C value, which indicates less conservative water use that results in high productivity at this particular clay-soil site. Water use appears to correspond to the environmental conditions prevailing at collection sites for these provenances. Results suggest that A. senegal provenances in the clay part of the gum belt are adapted for fast growth rate and high biomass and gum productivity as compared with the provenances from the sand regions: a negative correlation was found between tree gum yield and @d^1^3C. The variation in water use and gum production was greater among provenance groups than within them, suggesting that selection among rather than within provenances would result in distinct genetic gain in gum yield.

Description:
The paper investigates the ameliorative properties of pine cultures in their site conditions on the island of Rab. Pines, as allochthonous and pioneer species, were used to afforest degraded and devastated areas on the island because of their important role in the process of progressive vegetation succession. Twelve sample plots were established in the forest pine cultures. They encompassed various pine cultures (maritime pine, Aleppo pine and black pine) in diverse parent substrates (limestone, reddish-brown quartz sand, Flysch) and different soil types (eutric cambisol, cambisol on limestone, red soil and rendzina). To process the data, the following multivariate analyses were used: Two Way Indicator Species Analysis (TWINSPAN), Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) and Indicator Species Analysis. The research results showed differences among the forest cultures of black pine, Aleppo pine and maritime pine. A relationship was found between the quantitative environmental variables (slope, pH, humus, the C/N ratio, age and the quantity of leaf litter) and the vegetation. As well as the relationship of the species towards qualitative variables (type of pine culture, parent substrate, soil type, exposition).
Book Description
A state-of-the-art revision of a century-old method, the S-Table is the only sight reduction method designed to back up a celestial navigation computer. Developed by Mike Pepperday, designer of the Merlin Navigation Computer. The S-Table method uses DR, not position, giving the same answers as a navigation computer and the same benefits of short, mutually comparable intercepts needing little or no plotting. The table stores readily in a sextant box. The S-Table covers all latitudes and altitudes: it completely replaces massive volumes of sight reduction tables.

A great reference for any northland nature lover..........2000-03-26
This excellent field guide is invaluable for those of us who live in the northern part of the Midwest. It covers the many types of habitats we enjoy here, and the plants, animals and birds found in them. The book is full of vivid pen and ink drawings showing samples of the variety of wildlife which abound here. It is extensive enough to provide throrough information, yet small enough to tuck into a backpack on a camping trip. It's a wonderful value and a fascinating read. Go for it!
Book Description
Nothing in the annals of sports has aroused more passion than the heavyweight fights in New York in 1936 and 1938 between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling — bouts that symbolized the hopes, hatreds, and fears of a world moving toward total war. Acclaimed journalist David Margolick takes us into the careers of both men — a black American and a Nazi German hero — and depicts the extraordinary buildup to their legendary 1938 rematch. Vividly capturing the outpouring of emotion that the two fighters brought forth, Margolick brilliantly illuminates the cultural and social divisions that they came to represent.

Two Men And The History They Share.......2007-01-29
I have owned this book for over one year, but have put off reading it in favor of others because I can not claim to be a boxing fan. I finally reluctantly started to read it, and found it to be so interesting I finished it in three days. The book's main focus, of course, is on the two fights between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling. Although Louis won the heavyweight title in defeating Jack Sharkey he knew he wouldn't be recognized as the true title holdler until he avenged a previous loss to Schmeling. Author David Margolick provides ample and interesting prefight hype and postfight reaction for both contests in addition to sports and movie celebrities' interest. Margolick skillfully weaves the attitudes of African Americans and Jews along with the racist attitudes of the American South in regard to the matches. Comments from several newspapers citing the stereotypes popular at the time are also provided. Finally Louis's and Schmeling's role during World War II and post war life is also provided. I felt this book provided me with a taste of what life was like between America and Germany during this time period. Boxing fan or not, I feel you are sure to enjoy the book.
Illuminating as Sportswriting ... Insightful as History ... Exceptional.......2007-01-21
An in depth look at the convergence of the boxing careers of Joe Louis and Max Schmeling. Exhaustively researched and fully indexed, BEYOND THE GLORY provides not just an analysis of one the most heralded sporting events of all times, but also gives the reader an extremely intelligent, insightful view of the cultural, social, and political forces at work in America and Germany in the mid 1930s that produced this monumental sporting event. Numerous photos add greatly to the impact of this excellent book. A beautifully written, amazing document ... equally valuable as a history text and as a chronicle of a heavyweight championship fight.
Joe fights many fronts.......2006-10-01
There's an interesting twist to this book that I didn't expect. American Jews identified with Joe Lewis because he was fighting Max Shmelling, who was identified with Nazi Germany. When Joe won, jews and blacks hugged and cheered together. There is debate as to whther or not Shmelling was really a Nazo or not. Most likely he was caught in the middle of a political spiral that he had no contraol over. The author expertly crafts the behind the scenes of setting up fights, the fight itself and the aftermath of the winners and losers.
Social history At Its Best!.......2006-09-26
Get a taste of the 1930's with this winning review of Louis /Smelling & much more. The author can write and certainly did lots and lots and lots of research. More important than Jackie Robinsons'baseball triumph, Louis'Lose and later victory brought America to an important point in bettering race relations. There is quite a bit of star studded name droping at ringside, most of whom the 20th Century historically deficient reader may not recognize. The author sometimes assumes the reader is familiar with a hundred phrases, terms and names such as Neville Chamberlin,Etheopias plight,CCC,Leni Reifenstal, and "brownshirts",though He briefly clarifies some of these at least once.Well worth reading.!
EXCELLENT READ FOR SEVERAL REASONS.......2006-06-17
Beyond Gory was a true surprise. I must first admit to not being much of a boxing fan, never have been, but this work is much more that just about this particular sport. First, we have a wonderful social history of a very strange and a very hard time this country went through. Secondly, the social commentary of both the author and of hundreds of writers before him are well documented here and thirdly, this is a very, very good sports book. As an autobiography on either of these fighters, the work is not all that strong, but then that really was not the purpose of this work. We do get a good working knowledge of both fighter's careers and where their motivation came from, but more importantly we get a great look at the social conditions which existed at that time. This in turn gives of a great measuring tool to see how far we have come (or, if you will, how far we have to go). The author has used wonderful excerpts from past publications of both black and white commentators of the time in this country and the rest of the world along with the commentaries of Nazi Germany. We get a glimpse of why our world was like it was at that time. This work is well written, well researched and is just filled with bits of obscure information that is absolutely a delight and certainly gives us thoughts to ponder. I must admit to have been fascinated from cover to cover with this work and do recommend it highly.

Should he drop out?

Customer Reviews:
a great book.......2006-05-30
Tomas Torres is a Mexican teenager who is forced to make the decision of whether or not to stay in school or go on to be a fisherman like his father and grandfather before him. Tomas wants to keep his fathers business alive, while his teacher is pushing him to stay in school and study marine biology. Opinions are split, things go wrong, read the book and find out what happens. A Shark Beneath The Reef is a wonderful book about a boy who is faced with the decision of school or fishing. His father was killed by a shark, and he has always wanted to continue his legacy. Tomas gains many different opinions on the topic before he decides. The marine police around his town are trying to shut down his fathers fishing business, and Tomas is caught up in the business of trying to save it, all while trying to make his decision. This was a very well written, well-researched book. The author uses great nature descriptions in the book, which really add to the book in many ways. I would recommend this to anyone looking for simply a good book.
The first thing I liked about this book is the different settings and how well they are described. For example heres how the author chose to describe a morning on the beach: "The mountains stretched north and south from horizon to horizon , and in the low light they looked like a gargantuan cutout of a jaw of sharks teeth. Above them stars shone as bright as fire. The sun would not be up for another hour." Its sentences like these that bring life to this book.
Another thing I liked about this book is the use of Mexican culture throughout the book. At the begging of the book it talks about the Mexican God Quetzalcoatl and the lady of Guadalupe. There is also a scene later in the book that describes a Mexican fiesta in which there is parades and dancing. This is a very neat and educational aspect to this book.
The final thing that I liked about the book is that while it is a very detailed book, the plot is very simple and it is an easy to read book. The plot of this book doesn't shift around too much, its beasically all about Tomas and his decision. The author provides characters and detail to add volume and description to the story, but the plot is simple throughout.
Overall, A Shark Beneath The Reef is a wonderful book with many delighting aspects that should be read and enjoyed by people of all ages.
one of the worst books ever written.......2005-04-08
This is by far one of THE worst books I have ever read IN MY LIFE. The lead character, Tomas, is played out as a normal Mexican child, yet the author makes it sound like he is an adult. It is set in Baja, Mexico, i'm sure this place is rural and doesnt have a lot of people, but I'm sure they have better things to do then stalk sharks and pretend there are boats on top of mountains. About 85% of this book is about Tomas talking about fishing. Okay, if you are contemplating being a fisherman, GET this book, I'm sure it can help you. For the rest of you, if you buy this book you are just wasting your money.

Shark Beneath the Reef.......2003-03-15
Shark Beneath the Reef is an excellent book about a Mexican boy who lives near the Sea of Cortez. His family catches and sells sharks for a living. He heard about an enormous shark who lives under the coral shelf. He dreams of catching the shark and holding it above his head in the plaza as a hero. He is also making his mind on whether he is going to school or becoming a shark fisherman. Meanwhile, his family is suffering because the sharks have gone out of the area and they have very little to sell. The government officials also wants to begin taxing the fishermen because they are making the beach a tourist site. The family camp is on that beach, so they try to avoid the the officials as much as they can. I liked this book was because of the plot. It was action sometimes and drama at another. The positions of the plot sections were completely mixed up, but exactly in order. The moral was also astounding. I am still amazed at how the story ended out. I thought it would be a simple decision, but it turned out to be completely different. Absoluteley excellent literature. You have got to read it!
One of George's best.......2001-08-28
From Jean Craighead George, best-loved author of more than eighty nature books for young readers, comes another marvelous story about a complex culture, family importance, and the vast relationship between humans and the natural world. This is one of her best, along the same line as the provocative WATER SKY--the story of a young man who learns about the whales of Arctic Alaska--and THE TALKING EARTH, about a girl who rows through the Everglades, befriending animals along the way. Although Ms. George is best-known for her classics, MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN and the Newbery Medal-winning JULIE OF THE WOLVES, her other novels are great adventures, too. SHARK BENEATH THE REEF is the story of Tomas Torres, who, at fourteen, is learning about his changing home and trying to cope with the new decisions he must face, the most important being his choice to become a fisherman or a marine biologist. A great shark only complicates this decision, as Tomas's dream is to kill the shark and carry it into his small Mexican town above his head, with the bells of the mission tower ringing in praise. However, it is when Tomas comes face-to-face with the shark that he realizes how vital it is to his family's well-being, and he forgets his dream and thinks, more sensibly, like a man. The ending is one of the best parts about the story, when Tomas and his teacher discuss the varying faces of nature and how it cannot be controlled, although humans may think they'd like to and can. The entire story sparkles with details about the teeming life of the seaside environment, interesting, well-described characters, and the importance of legends and heroes to many cultures. Nature and animal lovers will enjoy reading about the different creatures and birds found in this part of the world, although not much is given to the shark to allay fears about its legendary ferocity.
