Understanding Hospitality Accounting I.......2001-08-31
Several years ago, I used Professor Cote's Understanding Hospitality Accounting I text in college. Today, I am a director of food and beverage operations for a large casino corporation in Vegas. His text is by far the easiest to understand yet he does a comprehensive job in presenting hospitality accounting. He is the only author that I have read who can take the most complex topic and state it in user-friendly, understandable terms. Understanding Hospitality Accounting I is state-of-the-art and is the only text to provide meaningful computerized general ledger accounting in a real-world environment.
I continue to purchase his revised editions because I use them in my day-to-day management duties and find it to be the only text that provides meaningful descriptions of business organizations, financial statements, accounting records, and the best chapter on the statement of cash flows.
This is a five star book and I highly recommend it for students, teachers, and professionals.

Book Description
Commercial Chicken Meat and Egg Production is the
5th edition of a highly successful book first authored by Dr. Mack O. North in 1972, updated in 1978 and 1984. The 4th edition was co-authored with Donald D. Bell in 1990. The book has achieved international success as a reference for students and commercial poultry and egg producers in every major poultry producing country in the world.
The
5th edition is essential reading for students preparing to enter the poultry industry, for owners and managers of existing poultry companies and for scientists who need a major source of scientifically based material on poultry management.
In earlier editions, the authors emphasized the chicken and its management. The
5th edition, with the emphasis shifted to the commercial business of managing poultry, contains over 75% new material. The contributions of 14 new authors make this new edition the most comprehensive such book available. Since extensive references are made to the international aspects of poultry management, all data are presented in both the Imperial and Metric form.
Over 300 tables and 250 photos and figures support 62 chapters of text. New areas include processing of poultry and eggs with thorough discussions of food safety and further processing. The business of maintaining poultry is discussed in chapters on economics, model production firms, the use of computers, and record keeping. Updated topics include: breeders and hatchery operations; broiler and layer flock management; replacement programs and management of replacements; nutrition; and flock health. New chapters address flock behavior, ventilation, waste management, egg quality and egg breakage.
Other new features include a list of more than 400 references and a Master List of the tables, figures, manufacturers of equipment and supplies, research institutions, books and periodicals, breeders, and trade associations.
Commercial growers will find the tables of data of particular interest; scientists will be able to utilize the extensive references and to relate their areas of interest to the commercial industry's applications; and students will find that the division of the book into 11 distinct sections, with multiple chapters in each, will make the text especially useful.

Book Description
There has been very considerable progress in research into low-mass stars, brown dwarfs and extrasolar planets during the past few years, particularly since the fist edtion of this book was published in 2000. In this new edtion the authors present a comprehensive review of both the astrophysical nature of individual red dwarf and brown dwarf stars and their collective statistical properties as an important Galactic stellar population. Chapters dealing with the observational properies of low-mass dwarfs, the stellar mass function and extrasolar planets have been completely revised. Other chapters have been significantly revised and updated as appropriate, including important new material on observational techniques, stellar acivity, the Galactic halo and field star surveys. The authors detail the many discoveries of new brown dwarfs and extrasolar planets made since publication of the first edition of the book and provide a state-of-the-art review of our current knowledge of very low-mass stars, brown dwarfs and extrasolar planets, including both the latest observational results and theoretical work.
Book Description
"My books are about killing God."So declares Philip Pullman, the award-winning author of the bestselling His Dark Materials trilogy of fantasy novels: The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. Appealing to millions of children and adults alike, Pullman's books create a universe in which the church is the enemy and God is the master villain.Cultural analyst Tony Watkins offers an even-handed and appreciative critique of Philip Pullman's books, exploring their religious and scientific underpinnings and highlighting their cultural and spiritual significance. Interacting deeply with Pullman's published writings and providing exclusive interview material, Watkins sheds light and insight on the worldview of one of today's most influential fantasy novelists.Whether you are a long-time devotee or are discovering Pullman for the first time, Dark Matter is enlightening reading for fans, educators and parents alike.
Customer Reviews:
Tony Watkins--fan and critic.......2007-08-21
I'm a big fan of the Philip Pullman books. I consider him to be an excellent writer and storyteller. However, the "His Dark Materials" books deal with issues that need to be thought over and discussed carefully. I appreciated this book as a well-thought out and interesting look at Philip Pullman's background, his personal views, his goals in writing the books, and the historical and religious background behind the books. I especially appreciated the author's candid expression of his enjoyment of the books. He admitted that he was a fan of Philip Pullman, while disagreeing with his message. I enjoyed seeing a Christian opinion of the book that fully appreciated Philip Pullman's wonderful storytelling, but still seriously considered anti-Christian or anti-Church messages in the trilogy.

Book Description
As flowers, kittens, fish, frogs, X-rays and shadows leave their fleeting marks on photographic paper, Kunie Sugiura transforms them into stunning works of art that echo stone-age cave paintings and the traditional Japanese arts of object arrangement just as much as 20th century minimalism and the body art of Yves Klein and Robert Rauschenberg.
Her photograms and photogrammatic sculptures are extremely startling, because, unlike their near relative, the traditional photograph, they are both not-here and here, not-now and now. By deliberately turning back the clock to the earliest era in photo history, Sugiura reminds us of the fragile, slight foundation upon which the triumph of the reproductive regime rests. While the photogram has been superseded by an ever-expanding arsenal of photographic equipment, it continues to express, as no camera image can, photography's audacity in annexing the elemental truths told by the sun. Color reproductions and essays by Bill Arning and Joel Smith evoke the magic of Sugiura's work like the fading imprint of a lily's shadow.

Radical Amazement: Contemplative Lessons from Black Holes, Supernovas, And Other Wonders of the Universe
ASIN: 0824518659 |
Book Description
The sacred impulse is as old as humanity. In his latest book, James Conlon explores life in its three aspects of personal journey, communal journey and cosmic/universal journey. He develops the notion that our spirituality must be grounded in our origins, both logical and global, and that any damage we do to the earth damages not only ourselves, our community and our spirituality, but also those of future generations.
Customer Reviews:
A Sacred Story.......2002-02-03
This book is a gift from a dear friend and has already given me a wonderful belly laugh! In a litany of things needing to die and things needing to be born, Conlon pointed out that "Your right brain needs to be born and your left brain needs to be happy about it." Oh how true! Well, for me at least.
This is a wonderful resource for meditation and introspection. Exploring our own humanness is sometimes difficult and painful. Conlon eases us into the hard work with beautiful words and meaningful insight. Through use of examples from his own life experiences, Conlon brings us into focus with our own world.

Solo Racing, Best Information available to the new commer.......2007-08-11
This is the only publication available that gives a comprehensive overview into the sport, and somewhat eases the frustration of what to expect during the course of a day's event that goes beyond just racing. My driving skills are improving & I'm even thinking of moving up to road racing in Club Racing, or Spec Racing.
absolutely fantastic, except I wish..........2007-06-21
Great book, I just wish they would have had a diagram of a full course and how to run it. They showed one turn, with a late apex. made sense! They showed linking turns with early apex, into late apex. Made sense! But then when I got to the course for the first time, and it was like 75 linking turns? YIKES!
Still, this book taught me A LOT...
Great Book.......2006-08-31
Awesome book! Tons of great knowledge and advice for beginners to experts.
Difficult to read, poor production quality.......2006-01-11
There are a lot better books on driving then "Secrets of Solo Racing". Frankly if you have much autocross experience at all I wouldn't bother with this one. If you're just starting out, you may get something out it if, but not much.
Try the Speed Secrets books first.
Also I found the book to be very difficult to read, for many reasons:
- The author has a very choppy writing style, and I found myself having to re-read many passages to properly understand the meaning.
- Production quality / design is horrible. Many of the diagrams are worthless, with arrows pointing at the wrong things. Diagrams should be used to clarify words, not make it more confusing. The quality of the diagrams and are are poor--most are low resolution, and were drawn by an amatuer in Microsoft Paint
- I found the author skipped around a bit, and the book lacked a sense of flow
- Typeface is very difficult to read. You wouldn't think it would be that important, but I realize now one of the reasons I really dislike this book: the choice of typeface. I'm not sure what font they used, but it is a very slow and ungraceful. You wouldn't think something like that would matter until you read a book with a poor typeface.
The Benchmark.......2005-11-02
This book was the first I ever read on racing technique. This book is so good, that every time I read any other instructional books on racing my expectations are far higher than they can deliver. I read this book as a beginner, and I think that is who will benefit most from reading it, though all levels will learn from it. It lays out all the relevant information in simple language (once you pick up the necessary driving vernacular) and includes simple but very effective diagrams to help explain points. Far better than much more expensive books (and I've bought a lot of them) with fancier photographs and pro racer forwards and such.

So you've heard that driving in Europe is expensive, terrifying, and simply lousy with red tape. It ain't necessarily so, says Eric Bredesen, author of Moto Europa. In fact, if you know what you're doing, automobile travel can be the best way to experience the continent. Bredesen wrote this book after he spent three months touring Europe in a car--it is, he says, the guide he wishes he'd had, a guide that "walks you step by step through the decisions you need to make, a guide that presents a reasonable amount and type of information in an easy to follow format.... " You won't find hotel or restaurant recommendations in Moto Europa--Bredesen leaves that kind of information to other guidebooks. What you will find is plenty of information about renting, leasing, or buying a vehicle in Europe, how to insure it, how to pack it, and what kind of documents you'll need for each country you intend to visit. There's a chapter devoted exclusively to the challenges of driving in the British Isles and another on alternative accommodations.
In addition to the wealth of information in these chapters, Bredesen includes several appendices that cover subjects such as questions renters should ask, what to do in case of an accident, a motorist's phrasebook, and more. Armed with Moto Europa, even the timidest driver can have a positive experience motoring through Europe.
Customer Reviews:
Moto Europa: The Complete Guide to European Motoring.......2000-06-12
This book was fabulous! I loved the fact that pictures of street signs were depicted in the book - which helped before we came upon them to know what they meant. I also liked the specifics on speed limits (and what repercussions to expect with traffic violations!)and other traffic laws that change at every border. We even used it to drive in Eastern Europe and were pleased with the accuracy of the author's information. I agree that motoring through Europe is the only way to go; the freedom is unbelievable! I'm disappointed to learn that this book - which seems to be the only one of its kind - is out of print.
Fantastic travel guide.......1998-05-27
This is easily one of the best travel guides I've ever come across. If you plan on travelling Europe by car, you would be crazy to not get this book. Even if you don't plan on driving, it is still a wise investment because of all the other travel information that it contains. It is well written and very informative. The author also makes a great case on why you SHOULD travel Europe by car. This book is a must have for European travellers.
Great guide to european travel - the best I've seen........1997-10-07
This guide provides a wealth of information, and I agree with its premise that traveling Europe is best done via automobile. I also thought the physical make-up of the book was excellent. It was created in a way that allowed one to open to a page, and the book would stay open. This sounds of little benefit, but I was constantly referring to it as it lay on the passenger seat while I drove. Traffic signs, language translations, local customs - everything was covered. I loved the introduction detailing his first trip to Paris - funny stuff! He also addresses the myths associated with European driving. Buy it! You won't regret it.
Book Description
ow in its fourth hardcover printing, Define 'Normal' has become a word-of-mouth phenomenon. This is a thoughtful, wry story about two girls-a 'punk' and a 'priss'-who find themselves facing each other in a peer-counseling program, and discover that they have some surprising things in common.
Customer Reviews:
No one is ever alone when you start to look around..........2007-10-11
Jazz and Antonia seperately found their on way to "fit in" at school, but they struggle to "fit in" to their own skin. Neither of these heroines really understands the full effect of what is happening to them in their lives, and, when they look at each other's difficulties, each realizes how much they could use a friend.
Poignant and driving. Any teen that feels alone in the world should read this story.
An Odd Friendship.......2007-05-31
Antonia's life looks perfect from the outside. She gets excellent grades in high school, dresses nicely, and has good manners. Teachers like her and she likes school; she plans on graduation early and getting an early start on college. Just underneath the surface, though, Antonia's life is not so easy. Her father is gone and her mother is severely depressed. Running the house and taking care of her two little brothers has become almost entirely Antonia's responsibility.
When Antonia's guidance counselor asks her to be a peer counselor to help other students through their problems, she reluctantly agrees. She doesn't really have the time, but she knows it will look good on her college applications and she wants to maintain her perfect student image with her teachers.
Antonia is assigned to counsel Jazz, who is as different from Antonia as anyone could be. Jazz dyes her hair weird colors. She is a punk who wears ripped clothes and leather. She has body piercings and tattoos and is friends with the bad crowd at school. She and Antonia seem to have nothing in common, and Antonia has no idea how to get her to talk about her problems so they can start solving them.
Soon, though, Antonia begins to realize there is more to Jazz than what she appears on the surface. When they finally start to talk, Antonia finds she is looking forward to the counseling sessions. And as she talks to Jazz, Antonia realizes she is working through her own family problems, too.
I really liked Jazz's character--she had a great deal of depth. I liked watching Antonia and Jazz develop such a nice friendship. The adults in this book were pretty lousy, though, from the school staff who seemed to treat the students unfairly to Jazz's parents who made her life difficult instead of accepting her as she was.
Normal Means Nothing.......2007-05-19
One of the books that I read this year was Define Normal by Julie Anne Peters. In this book there are two main characters that are complete opposite from each other. As the story goes on they discover that they have more things in common than they imagined. As I read the story, even I found many things in common with these two girls.
Elizabeth is a shy quiet girl. She is known to be a "loner" at school. Her life is very troubling, but she prefers to hide all of her emotions. Jazz is the opposite from her, or at least she thinks she is. At school she is known to be a troublemaker. Hanging around with the wrong kinds of people and having different "tastes" in clothes. Her parents are from a very rich society her "punk" style. The two girls have to peer council each other. They think that they are doing the other person a favor by counseling one another. The truth is a whole different story. They become friends, but in secret. Jazz doesn't want her friends to find out because of her reputation.
People tend to think that two different kinds of social groups can't mix. In this case, a "punk" girls and a "loner", this book proves them wrong. I learned that you can't judge a person by how he/she looks. There is a lot more to a person than what we see on the outside.
I have never read a book that made more sense. This is a common problem that kids face, wondering what will happen if they talk to "that person" Not only is this book interesting to read, it has a moral. You have to have patience with a person until you find out their true personality. I recommend this book to kids who are in middle school. That's where these problems occur most often. I hope tat reading this book will change how a person thinks and feels.
Cate's Review.......2007-05-07
Define "Normal" by Julie Anne Peters
In Define "Normal" by Julie Anne Peters, Antonia's life at home and school is falling apart. Her only comfort is the thought of doing peer counseling at school - but that's until she finds out she is supposed to counsel "Jazz" Luther whom Antonia thinks is beyond help. But through the peer counseling program Antonia and Jazz learn things about each other that they never thought could be possible. As they grow closer together, something happens that shatters their friendship and they will have to learn to forgive each other and their families to remake their friendship.
Define "Normal" is a wonderful book about the true, very similar personalities of two people who, at first glance, seem extremely different. Julie Anne Peters does a great job captivating middle school readers who like realistic fiction, with the unexpected turns of the plot and the description of the characters, Antonia and Jazz. At the end of the book the reader will feel like he or she knows the characters because of the vivid way the author writes about how they dress, talk, and act. Define "Normal" is a great book and middle school girls will enjoy reading it.
this is one of the best books i've ever read!.......2007-03-09
this book is about two girs who seem completely different from each other, and find out that they have lots more in common than they think.Antonia is participating in the new peer counseling program in their scool. She then finds out that her peer is going to be Jazz luther,a punker, and druggie, and a freak. But then they find out that their family has a crisis, and that crisis will help them build a strong friendship. These two girls will now have to struggle to help each other survive their own famimy. Will Antonia be willing to trust someone like Jazz? or will she just go on with her normal life? but it really depends how you define normal.

Jazz's family is wealthy and seemingly perfect. As they continue through the 15 hours of peer counseling, it becomes clear that both girls have issues they need to work through. They go from wary classmates to friends who support and help one another. As Antonia's mother is hospitalized for her depression, Jazz battles her own mother's need to control by quitting the one thing she loves most-playing classical piano. Both girls deal with their losses by finding new ways to look at their problems and to resume life as "normally" as possible. This believable book is well written and readers will feel that they know both Jazz and Antonia, and they will want to see them triumph over the frustrations in their lives.

Great book!.......2006-09-12
I don't often read mainstream fiction. Very little of it comes across as interesting or well-written to me in terms of plot, character development, or setting. I mention this so that you understand precisely what a glowing review of this book from me means.
Define Normal has got to be one of the best young adult books I've ever read, and I read a LOT of young adult fiction, genre and otherwise. The character development is outstanding, especially with Jazz: a punk who loves classical music, has no interest in breaking laws, and hates smoking with a passion. The writing is solid, the pacing is excellent, and the plot is interesting. The theme is also outstanding: that nobody can be simplified down to just one label, all people are unique, and that judgements of people you don't know well are bound to be inaccurate (and sometimes even judgements of people you think you do know will be completely wrong, too).
I've spent a lot of my life being misjudged and labeled wrongly -- I think most of us have -- and this book really spoke to me, through both Jazz and Antonia's characters. So if you've ever been accused of being "abnormal" -- or "normal," for that matter -- this is a book for you. :)
Product Description
The key to happiness, or to making life satisfying and meaningful, requires that we develop our mind and emotions until we can think for understanding and care whole-heartedly. The training for this development is offered in three books that begin with: "The Conscious Alternative to Normal Life." Here, we contrast a normal versus conscious picture of life. In the normal picture, our life is structured by a purpose to pursue approval, security and pleasure. By contrast, with a conscious picture, we acquire an innocent burning desire to develop our mind and emotions so we can master every need and potential. Then, in "The Internal Choices, Needs and Fufillment that Define a Conscious Life": we identify four choices that define our perspective and priorities for life. We also define four internal needs: personal conversation, conscious touch, internal development, and life affirming self-renewal. Next we describe the attitudes and skills necessary to fufill our internal potential to become a consciously competent person, satisfying mate, competent parent and real friend. Finally, in "Mastering the Mystery of Being Alive": we define the seven mental tools necessary to see reality accurately and think for understanding. Next, we extend our list of internal needs to include: Self-worth, to offer a genuine emotional bond, to create meaningful work, and to feed our mind truth and emotional beauty. Feeding internal needs is essential because it creates the emotional energy necessary to create a satisfying life and to care whole-heartedly. The information in all three books is required to live with intelligence, passion, playfulness and purpose. --from book's back cover
