Book Description
An excellent knowledge base in soil and water chemistry -the ideal basic text for students of the environmental sciences
In Environmental Soil and Water Chemistry, leading soil and water authority V. P. Evangelou presents a complete overview of the principles and applications of soil science, addressing the subject by viewing the interactions between soil and water as a basis for understanding the nature, extent, and treatment of polluted soil and water. The text opens with a discussion of principles-the fundamental tenets of chemistry needed to understand soil and water quality and treatment of polluted resources-and continues with a look at applications for the control and treatment of soil and water. Suitable for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students, this extensive, timely volume covers:
* Water chemistry and mineral solubility; soil minerals and surface chemical properties and their behavior; and electrochemistry and kinetics
* The control of agricultural chemical pollution and land disturbance pollution; colloids and transport processes in soils; and technologies for measuring quality and executing treatment
* Specific chemical contaminants and the procedures for their neutralization
In a world where chemical pollutants pose a grave threat to the earth's natural resources, Environmental Soil and Water Chemistry offers students both an excellent textbook and a handy reference on the wide spectrum of environmental problems they will confront outside the classroom.
Customer Reviews:
Contains fundamental principles in soil-water chemistry.......2002-01-03
This book covers wide aspects in the field of soil-water chemistry. The topics are covered amazingly in a very smooth manner and serves as a good reference for college seniors and beginning graduate students in environmental sciences. The book covers most of important fundamental principles in soil-water chemistry. The sections are full with displays and tables, and problems, which I found it very helpful. Despite the complexcity of this topic, the author deserves a lot of credits for writing such a great book. I strongly recommend this book.

Book Description
We study the properties of star-forming galaxies at redshift z~2, an era in which a substantial fraction of the stellar mass in the universe formed. Using 114 near-IR spectra of the H-alpha and [N II] emission lines and model spectral energy distributions fit to rest-frame UV through IR photometry, we examine the galaxies' star formation properties, dynamical masses and velocity dispersions, spatially resolved kinematics, outflow properties, and metallicities as a function of stellar mass and age. While the stellar masses of the galaxies in our sample vary by a factor of ~500, dynamical masses from H-alpha velocity dispersions and indirect estimates of gas masses imply that the variation of stellar mass is due as much to the evolution of the stellar population and the conversion of gas into stars as to intrinsic differences in the total masses of the galaxies. About 10% of the galaxies are apparently young starbursts with high gas fractions, caught just as they have begun to convert large amounts of gas into stars. Using the [N II]/H-alpha ratio of composite spectra to estimate the average oxygen abundance, we find a monotonic increase in metallicity with stellar mass. From the estimated gas fractions, we conclude that the observed mass-metallicity relation is primarily driven by the increase in metallicity as gas is converted to stars. The picture that emerges is of galaxies with a broad range in stellar population properties, from young galaxies with ages of a few tens of Myr, stellar masses M~10^9 Msun, and metallicities Z~ 1/3 Zsun, to massive objects with M*~10^11 Msun, Z~Zsun, and ages as old as the universe allows. All, however, are rapidly star-forming, power galactic-scale outflows, and have masses in gas and stars of at least ~10^10 Msun, in keeping with their likely role as the progenitors of elliptical galaxies seen today.
Book Description
The book reviews the most timely and interesting problems of stellar astrophysics, particularly those suitable for studies with the world's largest telescopes, and it can serve as an introduction to such studies. In particular it gives a comprehensive presentation of state-of-the-art research in stellar and planetary system formation, extra-solar planets, final stages of single and binary stellar evolution, and stellar populations in the Local Group of Galaxies, including observational techniques and technologies applicable to those important fields. The book also presents the most important unresolved problems of stellar astrophysics, intended to help identify directions for future research.

Book Description
This book collects the review papers given at a symposium on Stellar Populations hosted by the Space Telescope Science Institute, Baltimore, Maryland in May 1986. The reviewers present a comprehensive summary of our present understanding of stellar populations within galaxies. The material covered includes the initial mass function and star formation histories; the chemical history of galaxies, and their observed evolution as a function of redshift; stellar kinematics; and modelling of synthetic populations. The book is a valuable analysis of the role of stellar populations in determining galactic structure and evolution.
Book Description
Stellar populations, the building blocks of galaxies, are direct tracers of a galaxy’s star formation history, its chemical enrichment and the assembly of galaxies in the Universe. This last decade has witnessed a revolution in our observations of galaxies; with larger telescopes and new instruments allowing us to look deeper in the Universe, and to study nearby galaxies in greater detail. IAU Symposium 241 reports the considerable progress made in recent years in this topic. Theorists, observers, and researchers of resolved and unresolved stellar populations discuss the ingredients of stellar population models and compare them to new data, forcing theorists to develop more refined models and methods to derive the physical parameters of stellar populations. New results from the Milky Way, the Local Group, and nearby and distant galaxies are presented.

Book Description
One approach to learning about stellar populations is to study them at three different levels of resolution. First in our own Galaxy; secondly from nearby galaxies where stars can still be resolved; and thirdly in remote galaxies in which the stellar population can only be studied in integrated light.
This IAU Symposium covered the entire range of galaxies in its study of their stellar populations. Interspersed with theoretical papers, the wealth of observational results provides an important state-of-the-art presentation of the progress that has been made in this field.

In this unique collection of original and previously published essays, notable authors and writers David Maraniss, Jane Leavy, H.G. Bissinger, John Edgar Wideman, Charles McGrath, John Irving, Francine Prose, John McPhee, Pat Conroy, Christine Brennan, E.M. Swift, George Vecsey, Tour, Andrew Solomon, Frank Deford, George Plimpton, and notable others reveal the experiences, both good and bad, theyve had with the athletic coaches who changed and influenced their livesand pass on the sage advice they received for future generations.
Customer Reviews:
A Decent Coaching Clinic.......2007-03-20
This is an anthology of articles about coaches who influenced each of the writers in the book. The pieces themselves are hit and miss with some great stories by George Vecsey, Benjamin Cheever and Frank DeFord among others, but there are also several that just aren't that interesting. The benefit is that you don't have to read any of the chapters that don't interest you and the good ones are worth the price of the book. I would recommend this for a quick read of some inspirational stories, but not as a comprehensive anthology about the greatness of coaches or what makes them special.
You never know the effect you're having..........2006-08-25
This book was given to me while I was in Sloan Kettering in January, by Steve Valerio and his wife Jennifer. For a couple of years while I was coaching the North Jersey Rugby Club, Steve was the president of the club. He wrote a really lovely sentiment in the front of the book, for which I am greatly appreciative.
Coach is not the type of book I'd buy for myself, but it was pretty good! I really enjoyed it. There are 25 reminiscences by a variety of people - mostly professional writers and authors - about coaches who deeply influenced them. Of course some of the essays were pretty average - to be expected when there are 25 of them - but some of them were really quite brilliant.
My favorite was by Jane Leavy (never heard of her before reading this book) entitled "Coaching Bob" and it's different from the rest of the essays. In it she describes coaching Bob - a man suffering from AIDS - on how to live his life and face his impending death.
The last three essays were by well-knwn sports writers and commentators Bob Wolff, Ira Berkow, and Bud Collins. All very good.
The fellow who gave me the book, Steve Valerio, is your typical great guy rugby player. When I started coaching North Jersey, Steve, who was called "Flash" because of his (lack of) speed, was playing wing, the speed position on the rugby field. After a while, having discerned his (lack of) speed, we moved him to wing forward, where he never let us down.
Ohhhh.... they meant THAT kind of Coach!.......2006-01-29
I picked up this book because I thought it was
about Creativity Coaching, one of the Life Coaching
specialties I use in my professional life.
Then I saw it was about ATHLETIC coaches - and
writer's relationships with SPORTS coaches.
I rolled my eyes at myself at making such an
assumption....
I decided I would read some of the selections
anyway.
I turned first to John Irving - a writer whose
work I especially enjoy. His quote, "When you
love something, you have the capacity to bore
eveyone about why - it doesn't matter why." and
decided that quote may be the very reason this
book called out to me.
The other selection I found incredibly compelling
was from writer Lauren Slater. I was in tears
as I sat in Barnes and Noble reading this
lush, evocative entry. She allowed us to witness
her trip to Summer Camp and the deep sadness and
horrible inner battle she had as she separated
herself from her mother, as well as the movement
from it thanks to Coach Kim.
This would be inspiring to any kind of teacher
and any kind of writer, though those who actually
ARE athletic coaches may find it the most
helpful of all.

Customer Reviews:
Would like to give 0 stars.......2007-08-19
Waste of money.
I THOUGHT I was buying the Insight Guide, not the Insight "pocket" guide. The Insight Guide is a worthwhile guide. Be careful when you buy and don't waste your money on this.
Outstanding Guide to Thailand!.......2007-07-12
I have visited Thailand nearly every year for the past six years. I find Insight Guide Thailand to be informative, accurate, easy to navigate around and a pleasure to use, with beautiful photography. It contains fairly in-depth reviews of Thai history, religion and culture. Cross-references to map locations of sights of interest are really handy. I feel the Insight Guides outclass Lonely Planet Guides and are much more user-friendly. I would not travel without my Insight Guides!
I also find Insight Guide Philippines to be outstanding.
Great for pictures.......2007-05-12
I bought this book in conjunction with a Frommer's guide to Thailand. I bought this book solely to supplement my Frommer's guide which lacks pictures and some other info that Insight Guide provides. Insight provides lots of information about the history and culture behind cities, places, and attractions. It also has a few detailed maps which is nice. However, it is very, very limited in other things that you might expect from a guide book. The book is silent on things such as city orientation, how to get from the airport to the city, costs of things such as taxis and entrance fees to attractions, ratings on attractions, etc. For those sort of things and many other travel tips and hints, you should look into other books, like Frommer's, Fodor's, Lonely Planet, etc. (I chose Frommer's for my trip and have found it very helpful - although I haven't gone on my trip yet).
FYI: Frommer's, Fodor's, and Lonely Planet all have website with the type of information that is in their books if you want to get a feel for them (it's free).
Happy travels!
Insight Guide Thailand (Insight Guides Thailand) .......2007-01-05
It gives you great tips for traveling to Thailand, specially to Bangkok (it capital).
qclee.......2001-03-21
This guide provided alot of history to Thailands landmarks. If you are into dwelving into the history of a country, then this guide is for you. There were many beautiful photos of the various palaces, cities, artifacts, etc. The most helpful part of the book were the practical tips on what to expect while traveling to this country (weather, currency, shopping, festivals, lodging, cuisine, attractions, sightseeing, beaches, emergency numbers). I found the travel tip portion of the book very indepth. There is also a map in the book where you can see the different roads.

Customer Reviews:
The Red Rose Box.......2004-03-01
Brenda Woods' book The Red Rose Box is outstanding. This book takes you through many emotions as you read this book. It makes you angry as you read about how life in Louisiana was for African American people. The characters make you too feel afraid when whites spit on them and call them names. Woods does and excellent job of portraying the emotions of her characters through the vivid language and descriptions. The book is about Leah and Ruth Hopper who are living in Louisiana with their parents who are hard working African American people. Leah dreams of being a teacher one day and leaving her little town in Louisiana. Leah receives a package from her Aunt Olivia on her birthday it is an overnight case covered in red roses. Leah opens to finds what her aunt considers her femininity. Also on that day Leah's mother Rita receives and apology letter from her sister. This sets the wheels in motion for an amazing adventure for Leah and Ruth. They visit with Olivia and her husband in California. They also experience a trip to New York. All the while realizing that African American people are treaded different in the south, then in the other places they have visited. When tragedy strikes and Leah and Ruth go to California to live with their Aunt Olivia they experience the finer things in life, but terribly miss home.
I like this book because the setting is during the depression. Historical settings are always interesting to me and make the book more believable. I recommend the book for older elementary age children.
Red Rose Box.......2002-10-04
Brenda Woods' novel, The Red Rose Box, tells the story of 10 year-old Leah Hopper from a small Louisiana town. The book begins when Leah recieves a mysterious package from her Aunt Olivia in Los Angeles. Inside is a traveling case filled with items Leah could never imaging owning, a silk bed jacket, costume jewelry among other things. Also in the package is a letter for Leah's mother Rita, who hasn't spoken to Olivia in years. The letter invites Leah, her mother, her sister Ruth, and her grandmother to visit her in Los Angeles. During thier visit the Hoppers find Aunt Olivia's life very different from thier own. Olivia is not subject to Jim Crow laws, is married to a wealthy man and lives in a fine house. Leah finds this life exciting and desirable. She calls L.A. freedom, but will she be happier there than Louisiana? Leah finds that she must answer this question after tragic events force her and Ruth to go live with Aunt Olivia.
Overall, an excellant book. The characters are believable and children will be able to identify with Leah's struggle to belong, and her feelings of doubt. The book explores on an elementary level, the difference between life for African Americans in the North and South in the years before the Civil Rights movement. However, very few actual historical events are included in the book. Additionally, the book tries to cover two years of Leah's life, which results in little character development and brief explainations of many events. Still, the Red Rose Box is an excellant addition to children's literature
