They present a case-study approach to illustrate the political and practical challenges that researchers often face when conducting a salary-equity study for an institution. Kick Down the Door of Complacency provides a new solution to an old problem: how to persuade and teach managers to enact Continuous Improvement. The book is a story of a CEO who persuades his direct reports that having Continuous Improvement is vital, and then leads and teaches them exactly how to do a basic method for the next 24 months. Harwood's method is built on some new assumptions: a change process is necessary; the top person must personally lead; everyone is required to participate (two hours per week); speed is critical; and obtaining measurable meaningful improvement, early and forever, is essential. This approach is applicable to any organization, and parts of large organizations of up to 2,000 people, be they in manufacturing or service, for-profit or not-for-profit. With two supplemental books - one for trainers, the other for participants - all can easily be trained (two sessions totaling 15 hours) in how to use 22 basic problem-solving techniques. By actually using them to solve problems presented in two cases, they learn the techniques.

Kick Down the Door of Complacency is an excellent book. It describes how any company can deploy a continous improvement system to increase efficiency, improve worker morale, and create happy customers. The author does a good job of weaving discussion of the system itself, which clearly draws from extensive experience, with a story that illustrates the concepts and entertains throughout. This is a valuable guide for any manager interested in improving the way their department or company operates. Highly recommended.

I've been an Art Wolfe fan for years, but Rhythms From the Wild is by far Art Wolfe's best, most inspirational, most relaxing book. The photographs in this book are truly lyrical in their beauty. There's both a gentleness and a sense of movement to the images. Outstanding production quality, surprisingly fairly priced, this is a book to be kept by your bed for late night pleasure.

jargons to explain jargons.......2007-03-21

I had high hopes for this book after reading all the reviews. At the same time, my baseball knowledge is very limited. My biggest disappointment is that the author tried to explain baseball jargons using baseball jargons. In other words, the ideas are not explained in plain, effective language. Maybe the author is "born" to speak the language of baseball. Unfortunately for readers like myself who is trying hard to know more about the sport, the baseball jargon does not come naturally.

Good book for really knowing baseball.......2006-08-16

I am a huge Dummies fan. So when I recently decided to learn more about baseball, I naturally turned to the Dummies guide. What I found was a book that, true to its name, does help a person who knows absolutely nothing about baseball. If you knew nothing about baseball, you could pick up this guide and read the first 3 chapters, and become conversant.

It also has a good deal of detailed information for those who play and want to improve their game. Strategy on hitting, pitching, running, and just about everything else about baseball is presented. This is also good stuff.

So aside from a minor though annoying problem in this book - which I will note in a moment - this is an all-around great book. Joe Morgan, hall-of-fame second baseman, and a cast of other well-known major leaguers contributing bits on their own positions make this book an excellent reference on baseball.

My problem with the book is that this book is difficult for me as a person in the middle ground of those who grew up around baseball, playing it occasionally but not seriously, and never having a deep knowledge of the game. For example, he starts using the player numbering system used on scorecards early in the book, but does not explain it until chapter 18. I have found this kind of problem several times in this book. In fact, it's not so much a matter of the information being lacking - it just seems not well organized or indexed.

But this is a relatively minor point. Get this book if you really want to know baseball!

Joe Morgan is a genius!.......2006-06-10

If you think someone whose ego is bigger than the Pampas of Argentina can ever be a genius. Because I find that ego usually clouds intellectual process. And if my line of reasoning is correct, Joe Morgan is the stupidest person in the world.

I once met Joe at a Hummel Convention in San Diego. He was going up to people unsolicited saying, "I'm hall of famer Joe Morgan. Would you like me to rub sun tan lotion on your shoulders?"

And before you start saying, "that's not so bad," it WAS mostly cloudy that day!

Great book for a new fan.......2005-09-09

I got hooked watching the Boston Red Sox in the 2004 post season, but I realized that I was very ignorant about baseball. I bought this book in the spring, and it taught me an incredible amount about baseball. I now watch almost every Red Sox game and enjoy the games much more through understnnding the basics and a lot of the subtleties.
The book is written for multiple types of readers, including people who play baseball or coach. I can't judge how well the book meets the player and coach needs, but for a basically ignorant fan, this book is fantastic! It's well organized, so it was easy for me to choose to skip certain sections on my inital read-through, and then go back and revisit them when I felt there was more that I could learn.
If you're looking to learn more about baseball and increase your enjoyment from being a spectator/fan, then this book will be great for you.

Worth It For the Baseball Culture and History.......2007-02-19

Any baseball fan will surely appreciate the baseball history in this short novel. The focus of the story is deaf pitcher, Luther "Dummy" Taylor, his teammates of the 1900-1911 New York Giants, famous coach John McGraw and the baseball culture of Cuba. There is a double dose of culture in this book with early 20th century American culture and Cuban culture of the same time period. But especially appealing is the baseball writing in this book. What is it that draws people to baseball? As this book shows, the game attracts fans from varying cultures, with varying economic backgrounds. There is nothing overly exciting about the game of baseball when compared to other sports such as soccer, basketball, hockey and football which is packed with action and thrilling moments. Baseball has two things that make it unique to contemporary sports today- the history, and the pace. No other sport (in America) has been so intertwined with culture over such a long period of time. The fan enjoys the history, both culturally and statistically. Also, baseball has the advantage of pace. Most sports are controlled by time while baseball is controlled by the game itself. Not only is baseball a sport that has captured the hearts of many fans, but literature which centers around this game has the same drawing power, the same lure.

The story itself is interesting, following the dreams of a deaf, veteran baseball player trying to get back into the bigs. But the story goes deeper than that though as Dummy Taylor and the Giants travel to Cuba to play against Cuban all star teams. The main character is an underdog who is easy to get behind and cheer for. The live baseball games described in the novel are written well, and very easy to imagine. But as the story gets away from the baseball games and the baseball culture, the story suffers. The author tries to tie Dummy's family troubles into the story but does so unsuccessfully. Overall the book was great.

My only complaint about Darryl Brock is that he doesn't write enough! What a great book! I loved If I Never Get Back and I loved Havana Heat. What a wonderful story about baseball, Cuba, and Luther Taylor. C

This novel is good summer fun. Don't mistake Havana Heat for The Great Baseball Novel (like The Brothers K). This is an above average feel-good formula story.

I noticed that while reading the other reviews, they were all people who had read this author before or love baseball. I am writing this review from the view of a Deaf person. In the first chapter, the author opens up with a scene at a Deaf school. For those of you who don't know, the Deaf school is a sense of pride in the Deaf community and the author seemed to have an awareness of that. Luther "Dummy" Tayler (all players who were Deaf back in the early 1900s were called "Dummy" - so don't take offense) used different means of communication throughout the book. He always seemed more comfortable with those who signed. His wife is Deaf, which is another culture instance within the Deaf community - marrying other Deaf people due to communication issues. This book also shows that Deaf people are actually quite smart (which is opposite the nickname, "Dummy"). This book was not written by a Deaf author, but he was well-informed and it is worth reading! Enjoy!

Good baseball novels transcend the sport itself and reveal understandings of how the game mirrors and develops our national character. Additionally, our best sports novelists encourage us to broaden our historical imaginations and inspire us to show empathy for conflicted characters who encounter both athletic and personal crises. Darryl Brock's convincing "Havana Heat" ably captures baseball's enduring importance as a metaphor for our national experience and deftly explores the influences of frustrated ambition, unvarnished competition and crippling racism in the sport itself. Though set in the early days of the twentieth century, the novel maintains a timelessness through its conflicted, but admirable protagonist.

The baseball described in "Heat" is meticulously accurate, yet the novel's rather formulaic melodramatic structure is not its dominant strength. Instead, Brock's vivid characterizations and his passioate commitment to historical accuracy are the hallmarks of this strong novel. Focusing on the attempted comeback of former New York Giant hurler Luther "Dummy" Taylor and the obstacles confronting a renewal of his career erected by the irascible, intemperate and tyrannical manager, John McGraw, the novel reveals the internal tensions and ambivalences Lu experiences during a 1911 barnstorming tour in Cuba. Taylor learns, at times reluctantly and painfully, that a person's worth is determined by much more than his win-loss record, that development of character and hope are more vital than prolonging a moribund career, that the satisfactions of teaching far outweigh the evanscent thrills of victory. Ultimately, Brock's greatest virtue as a novelist is his knack for using the action of the game and fluidity of the sport as representations of the human capacity for growth, self-forgiveness and redemption.

And that's not all. Brock writes with a refined and welcomed advocacy for the hearing impaired. Even though deaf players in the dead-ball era were invariably called "Dummy," at least they were in the big leagues. Where are the hearing impaired role models today in the national sport? The author's eloquent description of signing speaks directly to how much Brock believes sports novelists can write about much more than the game: "People who feel sorry for deaf folks don't have it quite right. Sign is a rich language...it also makes for a special kind of closeness. For one thing, you have to pay closer attention to others when you can't hear their words. You come to know them in ways that are direct and intimate."

Finally, Brock pays painstaking attention to detail. His historical descriptions of the atrocities a Kansas regiment committed while fighting against the revolutionary insurgents in the Philippines and his deft inclusion of reconcentration camps in rural Cuba by the Spanish (which left a heritage of bitterness and racial division) are but two examples of how hard the author worked to create a sense of authenticity. "Havana Heat"'s melodramatic structure is the only weakness in an otherwise compelling and convincing novel.

Great for Students and those refreshing their Spanish.......2005-03-04

As a friend of the author I'm not totally unbiased, but looking at the work on its own merits, I am impressed. For me, as an Anglo with ties to the Hispanic community, I found Mr. Bencastro's eloquent description of the Hispanic identity crisis in America particularly enlightening. Besides that, it's a pretty good story. Lastly, as I read it, I couldn't help but wish that it had been around when I was learning Spanish. The books we had to read for late high school and early college courses were not nearly so easy to read and interesting. The language itself is simple and straightforard, but not dull. For the intermediate student it provides new vocabulary, a nice story and some thought provoking themes.
